how to delete posts?
Only mods/admins have the ability to delete posts. If you have a post you want deleted, you may contact the moderator of that section to discuss it with them. Using the report function will also bring it to their attention. Moved to About XDA as that is more appropriate place than Q&A which is for technical discussion.
Pretty stupid if it says EDIT/DELETE .... I have been looking for delete option for over half an hour :/

Can anyone explain to me the new policies started in the new Q&A section?
Has anyone seen this? Apparently, you have to jump through hoops to open a new thread in the new Questions and Answers section.
From RULES - Must Read Before Posting Sticky in Q&A
ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE POSTED IN SEPERATE THREADS. IF YOU WISH TO OPEN A NEW THREAD FOR YOUR QUESTION, PLEASE DO THE FOLLOWING: If you wish to open a thread, you must PM me with the name of your thread, and the page number where it is located. IF YOU OPEN A THREAD, AND DO NOT SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE TO TWEAKMAN, YOUR THREAD WILL BE DELETED. There will be no exception to this. You must send the message to have your thread open!!!
ANY NEW THREAD, NOT OPENED BY A MODERATOR WILL BE REMOVED IMMEDITALEY: If you have a question you would like posted, you will not be turned away. This is only done to ensure that your question doesn't become lost in the pages as this section grows.
TO SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE TO REQUEST YOUR THREAD DO THE FOLLOWING:
1:GO TO THE TOP LEFT SIDE OF THIS POST AND CLICK ON USER NAME "TWEAKMAN"
2:ONCE ON THE NEW PAGE, GO TO CONTACT INFO
3:SELECT THE OPTION TO SEND A PRIVATE MESSAGE (NO OTHER FORM OF MESSAGE WILL BE ACCEPTED)
4:INCLUDE ONLY YOUR QUESTION
5:YOUR DONE!! YOUR QUESTION WILL BE POSTED IN A NEW THREAD FOR FURTHER HELP AND DISCUSSION!

I can think of three really good reasons not to do this:
Nobody reads the stickies.
Especially newcomers to the forum. People are just going to post new threads and wonder why they keep getting deleted.
It isn't very convenient.
What happens if I have a problem when Tweakman is asleep? Or on the toilet? I really feel sorry for that guy if he is going to have to publish every question anyone asks.
It is unnecessarily difficult.
The creation of this section was to help the Development and Hacking section get rid of general question posts. But if it is easier to make a new post in Development and Hacking, then people are just going to keep on doing that. Like this guy.
And then there is this:
ALL NEW QUESTIONS WILL BE REMOVED AFTER 7 DAYS: Once a thread is opened with your question, it will be left standing for a total of 7 (seven) days. If your question has not been answered at that time, you may repost your question as many times as needed. Again, this is to ensure that your question doesn't become lost in the pages as this section grows.

I don't get this either. What's wrong with the system as it is? Why can't we just leave the questions so that people can search for answers before they post? (Okay, granted most newcomers don't search either, but some do.) If people aren't getting answers, they can just bump their thread.
Am I wrong?
I agree, great intentions, but the whole idea is poorly conceived, just like the original thread in Development and hacking...nothing got answered, and if it did, how do you navigate to it to find it? Is anyone going to dig through this crap to answer someone else's question. I think not.
Give it time.
The kinks will be worked out.
Don't be so negative.
it will be open for all to post soon...... they are working on a team to keep the thread organized once fully opened

This was an effort to combat spam, and it's had a huge impact! You'll be upgraded to a full account after a certain number of posts (5 - 8 depending on the feature)--it happens automatically. Sorry for the inconvenience

It may take time after reaching the 5-8 post limit for it to allow you access, this is because the process runs in the background.
And when you have enough posts, you can edit your Signature in the UserCP (on the left hand side called "Edit Signature").
Or just click here : Edit Signature

People / Bots were Posting generic messages, like "Thanks this is great" or in some cases, actual responses based on words in a thread. The post it's self was not spam (although pretty pointless), but the users signature would contain 3-4 links to an online company of varying levels of trustworthiness.
We used to find one or two of these bad boys a day. Because they didn't create new threads, nor did they make it obvious to the casual observer, they were getting away with it.
I have not seen one of the so called "signature spammers" since the rules were put in place.
Dave
I had the same question...this is an excellent way to manage spam users. Good job, looking forward to delving more into this forum and getting a signature!
I was a bit upset at not being able to have a signature. Thanks Daveshaw for explaining. Its indeed a great way to stop spammers.

I like and dislike the idea.
I just logged into my account to make post (have like none) so am sorta spamming to be able to post solutions to android revolution HD. /sarcasm. My post aren't spam but i'm going to get 8 before midnight tonight!
I can see how it helps, but jeez. Couldnt post in the developer forum for the audio fix solution I made.

But you could post it in General, and then help a few people out while you were there, in Q&A, if your device has one. Don't bother with useless posts, they will be deleted and you'll never get to 10.

Well, you might be right but its not that easy. You know I have experience in those stuff in the development forum, but I have no way to make posts there.
I dont wanna be a sort of spammer by posting stupid stuff to get all the 10 posts.
But this 10 post rule leaves no other way to accomplish...
To find a topic that I can make a useful post takes a lot of time.
If you can't spend the time to make ten legitimate posts before posting in the dev fora, then you don't deserve to post there. This is a developer forum, not a support website.

Oh really? I was a clueless noob total non-developer when I came here and I had no trouble at all helping people who needed links or a little guidance where to find the information they need. XDA works because people help those who help themselves. Do not post useless posts, they will be removed and you'll never get to 10.
Why did this thread get unlocked? Now it's more noobs that can't read and just complain again.

I requested that it remain open. I've helped out others with legitimate issues before here. Also, leaving it open allows mods to track spammers easily.
Is it possible to allow free positioning of icons anywhere on the homescreens?

well, it's actually a request from me, and i was hoping for a discussion between devs on possibly removing the grid on homescreens that locks icons into place. that way we can have free positioning anywhere on the homescreen without the icons snapping into place.

Having this option would be really sweet but I am not sure how possible it would be. What are you thinking for moving the icons? Maybe someone has a tweak that would be more feasible for positioning the icons

Folks have two options when visiting a thread:
Option 1
Provide helpful and constructive repsonses ... not "use search", "use google", "wrong forum", etc.
Option 2
If a member is not inclined to follow Option 1 ... then move on!
If a member has posted in the incorrect forum, report the thread with a recommendation as to where it should be moved to.
As moderators, we spend countless hours having to clean up threads like this instead of working on our own forum contributions. As a fellow XDA member, help us by reducing the amount of off-topic, trolling, and flamming responses.

Yay Q&A 10char
Hi
I see some nice work has been done to reduce spam posts
I just wanted to put an idea out there to try and reduce spam within a post.
How about having a question repository in the thread when every question asked is collected and put in order for the dev to answer. The q and a's are then posted just as a sticky at the top of the thread.
I know the basic problem is people refusing to read but if it is easily available and right there it might reduce most of it.
Anymore ideas?
Huh?
Im sorry i dont quite get what u meant.

ad.fly is a pay per click link service which is not allowed (as are all pay per click services) here on XDA.
It's in the forum rules.
Which you should have read when you registered
@ The OP.
The prevention of unessential posts is something that are always looking at and while your idea is a nice one, this would require someone to keep on top of all the questions and compile them into order etc etc...
Unless someone volunteers to do that in a particular thread, which does happen occasionaly, this isnt possible.
Rest assured though, the great thinkers of XDA are always looking for new ways to cut down on the spam postings
I have been an admin/owner and also a moderator on my own and other forums and I'm afraid that spammers and their posts will always be a problem no matter what systems are in place. The only sure fire way to stop them is by using our eyes and sadly time to find the spam posts and report them (there is a thread for this ) so that they can be removed.
I'm probably missing something here, but: Is there a way to remove a closed poll in one of my threads, so that I can create another one, when needed? I looked under the thread options, as well as the options in the OP (Advanced Edit mode), but could not find any way to do this.
Thread in question is in my signature.
No but admin can, if want to link the thread here I'll pass across, or send a PM.
You can also make requests like that here for fast responses

Nope, once you created, and closed a poll, only mods/admins can do the stuff your asking about
