Hello
Today i recieved the jellybean ota update. its not working. i searched for a while and found out that ill have to update it with something called cwm and this requires root, but i dont want to root my phone. so i thought it would be possible to downgrade my device but apparently this also requires root. I have an unlocked bootloader but is there no way to update/downgrade my device without using root?

cwm does not require root, just an unlocked bootloader.

I saw a few posts with solutions how to root newest FW (autoroot, root using recovery) but I don't have unlocked BL and I can't unlock it because my phone doesn't fastboot.
So is there a tricky way (I know how to use ADB so I won't have a problem with it if there's a solution using it) how to root newest fw for those with locked BL?
Please, don't offtop if you don't have nothing smart to say.

Yeah but what if we don't want to unlock the bootloader...flashing won't work cuz the update isn't OTA. What is this Recovery mode everyone is talking about?
I don't think you can flash a firmware through recovery AKA clockwork mod
To use recovery aka clock work mod you need to use fastboot to boot recovery play IMG, and flash a custom ROM like Dalvik2Cache

Only way to get root with locked bootloader is by ota if available.
With unlocked bootlaoder you can do by several ways, for example flash pre-rooted DoomLord's kernel.
Thanks for every reply. I don't need root for now, I just wanted to ask if it's possible
BTW newest FW is awesome

Yes you can simple re-flash to 2.3.2 root with gingerbreak and do an OTA update and you'll keep your root running 2.3.3 gingerbread rooted 4.0.A.2.368 R00i with locked bootloader...
You can use the new zergrush exploit, I heard that it works on 2.3.3

It does http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
is there a way to get or keep root updating to 2.3.4 / 40..... update
Wait for OTA
or, flash through recovery (if your bootloader is unlocked) +autoroot

i have 2.3.3 rooted bootloader locked and a ota update aviable i hears if i so a ota update i ll lose root :/
what did you say?
anyway, if you followed the downgrade-root-OTA method, you won't lose root for as long as all your succeeding updates will be AND ONLY BE via OTA granting your bootloader is LOCKED (as your phone will be bricked if BL is unlocked) and that the system files were not tampered in any way..
.. For the INSTANT solution:
Go ahead and unlock your bootloader and flash Doomlords kernel.
Done and done.

Yes exactly easiest way plus you get the update now and don't need to rely on ota every time

Hi Guys, sorry for this noobish question

You can have root without unlocked bootloader
but It makes me wonder why you would revert back to locked?
just wait for someone to make a ROM / nandroid and flash the new file lol.
OTA is for people who aren't used to fooling with there device
apparently i tried rooting but i cant root without unlocking bootloader, only after i unlocked the bootloader i manage to get root
so it is advisable to just keep my unlock bootloader and flash new roms using Flashtool?

If you want a practically guaranteed method of rooting, yes that would be easiest. FTFs only come out like 1-2 weeks at most after the update is sent out anyway
Hello all,
I already searched the forum but I did not found any good answer.
1. In the past I've succesfully applied root access without unlocking the bootloader while still beeing on Android 4.1.x from this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894717
2. Now I've got a 4.2 OTA update. Before applying it I used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to keep a backup of su.
3. Restored su with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper
The result is that I have again root access from shell but when I want to use Apps which require root I always get failures and even no confirmation dialog.
How do I get superuser working (fully root) like before?
Thanks,
therealmarv

How should I flash that without having CWM? I think I need a manual repair :/
Is your bootloader locked?
If not...use my guide (in sig or stickied) to back up data before unlocking...
If so... "fastboot boot recovery.img" and flash the file.
The recovery is only being booted into...not written to the phone; so you'd still be stock rooted.
How in the world you not have a unlocked bootloader when you rooted before..
That aside, do remember to keep the bootloader unlocked next time..

The same sort of exploit that was used in ICS was eventually found for 4.1.1 that allowed root without unlocking.

What i mean is how can they not unlock the bootloader after rooting..
I did not unlocked bootloader because I thought it is not necessary (and I also thought it will affect OTA updates). So just to get it right: I can make a backup of my phone, root it, unlock bootloader and recover the backup afterwards so that no data is lost?
Ok I solved my issue (having su access via adb and locked bootloader) with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27085483&postcount=141
1. I unlocked the bootloader with the link above
2. flashed CWM with fastboot
3. flashed SuperSU CWM ZIP for getting root again
So I now have fully root, unlocked bootloader and cwm great.
Hi,
I saw there is a tool now where it is all GUI based and i can now unlock the bootloader and root my device. If i used this tool to root my phone and install something like TWRP but stayed with the default ROM that comes with my ZenFone 2 (Specifically the ze551ml ASUS_Z00AD) and i receive an OTA update from Asus, will it brick/do something funny with my device?
Also, is there a way to deroot my device if i decide i dont want it anymore? Cheers.
You need to remove root and have stock recovery, yes you can remove root...
Be careful of bootloader unlock tools, especially the official one, it tends to not work properly...
stay in stock recovery when you receive an OTA Update just unroot and install , be sure that you didnt modify/uninstall any system app.
You can unroot and modify ota file to work with TWRP. Guide is here somewhere. That way you can have updates and TWRP going for you.
Hey, I have my bootloader unlocked and my phone is rooted. If I unroot my phone through Super SU and update via OTA will it be updated without any issues?
Ok, makes sense guys, cheers for that
