That's hard to say because it's all very subjective. One person may prefer one ROM release over another.
A good bet is the IceCold AOKP or SlimICS ROM .. or ... the CyanogenMod 9 Beta 2 ROM by tbalden or TripNRaver's CM9 release.
You have to try them all and see which one you like best. This is a very subjective matter.
I recommend using Android revolution and then running rom cleaner no-sense, it removes most of sense and keeps the best bits
Buy an S3.......
Really, why you choose a sense phone like the hox anyway....
Just like buying a car with leather interior and after getting it just dismantle it and put cheap cotton interior back.
If you don't like it don't buy it

Personally I like the look of the hox a little bit more than the S3.
Aside from that I've put the CyanogenMod 9 - Endeavor Unleashed rom onto my HOX, which is almost like ICS ASOP with a few extra little features.

Thanks for the repilies, the nexus is a nice phone but HOX has better spec. Just wish HTC would drop the sense bug as it lags and goans. My mate just got the Nexus Jelly Bean update and the UI kills off sense for speed which is a shame cause is got less power but it makes the HOX look like a single core unit.

There currently is a Jellybean AOSP rom available, there's just a few things that are currently not working atm.
If you want to maximize everything that works you'd want to try:
Jdr0id's rom
Renovate
ViperX
Venomous beatmod
ARHD
If you really want to go aosp id say:
paranoidandro
SlimICS
Cm9
That's probably the best ones I've tried but pure aosp roms have alot of thing not working so go for a less-sensed roms for now.
Just my opinion
Typed with XDA Premium on OneX
I've just tried a launcher and its seems faster already, I know this doesnt kill all the sense crap but has helped a fair bit.
I say every time I get a phone I won't mod it but everytime I am drawn to the idea if only they had made the galaxy nexus the same spec as the one x and s3 oaf have bought that and not had this dilemma

mate..just use renovate rom or use rom cleaner to desense a rom of your choice..most roms now anyway have an option were you can have sense or no sense...trust me it does make a difference

Having come to the end of two years with my desire I'm due an upgrade. I'm holding on for a phone coming out later this year. Meanwhile I decided to be adventurous and change my one and only rom that has served me so well, miuxj. I check out Evervolv 3.0.3.p7 Jellybean that is "pre-beta" and I kid you not.... I have a new phone. It is an awesome rom. I am actually shocked and pleasantly surprised that the end is better than the beginning! Makes hanging on to my desire sweeter while this rom is being developed. These developers are like artists at work, thankyou guys!

Same experience with CronMod CM7/AOSP
I had official gingerbread ROM for two years - it was stable, quick enough... well, I was almost happy with that.
Of course, with decreasing free memory I started to think about custom ROM.
And I'll tell you one thing... IT'S AMAZING
I fell for CronMod-bravo (CM7/AOSP), with ICS theme for ADW launcher and it looks like a brand new phone, with lockscreen gestures and mods, customizable row and column counts (now I've got 5x5 icon grid on screen) and lots more... and lots of free memory! I'm using Sandisk Class 10 microSD card, with 1.5GB EXT3 partition... and installing every app I had to uninstall before because of low memory
Now I'm looking forward to stable ICS release, Sandvold or Spazedog... whatever comes first

Not to mention what jmcclue here said. Plus the environment where you are not supposed to post any bugs, non workings etc where that
seriously hinders development. I know devs these days for sure know what are the intelectual capacities of ppl drooling all over things which convert HTC Desire to HTC 0,7 Desire, but Halls of shame etc. Really? I don't remember we were treated that way by Leedroid, Neophyte, Sibere, Droidzone, melethorn or any other ol sk00l developer here which actually improved your phones functionality when they delivered. And then there were morons among their quorum, but neither of them deleted their account here iirc because of that.
You are not supposed to stop using waht you want on your phones. U r supposed to stop suggesting things even yourselves don't know what works and what does not to other people as daily drivers.

I have been playing with my friends S3 for a bunch of days now and I feel ot's much smother than my One X, the S3 is smooth as butter. So I had 2 questions.
1) Why is the S3 smother than my One X?
2) Does the new update fix that, and for those who already got the update do you feel that your One X is smooth as the S3 now?
Ah and why do the front camera of the One X looks like **** when compared to the S3 front cam?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
The update makes them virtually the same as far as smoothness goes. No problems there.
As far as the front camera? You are right. The GS3's front cam is light years better.
If you care the front camera, do verify the specs before you made decision.. Its 1.3M versus 1.9M, a big differential lay between...

solved in the 2.17.401.2 update
Compared both (side-by-side) updated to latest firmwares and can confirm that at a glance HOX is a bit smoother. HTC 1.29 is a fail in comparison to 2.17 in terms of smoothness.
After 2.1.7 update, HOX performance is indeed out shines the S3, if not on par now....
I used to admire S3 smoothness, but definitely not now anymore.
I love my HOX and Sense 4.1 even more now.

Q&A - These are questions at me and at the ROM
Q - Why aren't you a recognized contributor?
A - Haven't a clue
Q - How come you have One X+
A - It was for a review but I bought it as I liked it
Q - Is this Android 4.2!?!?
A - Yes and No. Its Android 4.2 built on Android 4.1.2. However when the sources are out I'll do the official one. This one is for desperate people.
Q - Your Awesome, When are you making Samsung TouchWiz 5
A - I need a themer who has to live through hell as I've made the icons but didn't make then correctly so you have to go through one by one

I'm not dying for s off, actually, I don't care, I find myself pretty good the way it is now

Hello good folks, was hopping somebody can help me here.
I have been using htc phones for years, I mean like 10 years almost.
long story short, just got a One max and I'm having an issue with the smilies when receiving text messages. For some reason when the wife sends me smilies in text, they don't show up as the image/smilies, they show up as just text, so that I'm clear, for example if you sent me this smile , it would show up as the text "", is there a setting some where I'm missing?
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the htc one, I came from the htc rezound (old as heck) and I have more features on that phone then I do on this one
I thank you all for your time and help.
Sorry, this Forum is for the HTC One, Verizon version, not the Max.

What phone does your wife have? I know for example my fiance had the iPhone when I got the HTC One and when she would send me emoticons they would show up as text, with the update to 4.4.2 my device started recognizing the emoticons because 4.4.2 used the same coding as IOS used for emoticons.

The One Max wasn't really built with "features" in mind, it's just a giant HTC One. If you want a big phone with tons of features you need a Note 3. Anyway, you can get a lot more use from it once you get it unlocked and start flashing roms. Try installing a different keyboard (like Swiftkey) and see if the emoticons start showing up.
The image smiles were always a sense thing, I've had the Droid incredible 2, incredible 4G LTE, the Droid DNA, and now the one, and in all other HTC phones I've had, with the exception of the incredible 2, I always had image smiles, but not with the one. I even ram a 4.2.2 sense 5 ROM on my DNA and it had them. But the 4.4.2 stock doesn't. It's really no big deal to me but I do miss it lol. So yeah I'm having the same issue. The sense 5 ROM I had on my DNA was a One port I'm pretty sure. It was the viperDNA. Oh well just thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth lol

Yeah but when they updated to 4.4.2 they updated the smiley images to the exact same ones thats on the iPhone so they work cross platforms now.

How lame -_- also I know this is completely off topic, but can a sense 4+ ROM from like the Droid DNA be ported to this phone(once I get my phone rooted and unlocked)? I know you're reading this and like "why the beck is this guy wanting to port a sense 4+ ROM to the one??!!" I personally love sense 4. I know it is super laggy, not to mention old as crap, but I will always have a special place in my heart for sense 4. Lol

You aren't the first one I've heard ask this actually, but it would be really difficult to pull off as far as I know so unless you're buddy buddy with a developer it probably won't ever happen. I'd be interested to see it since this is my first HTC device so I've only ever been on Sense 5.5
