Facebook app using far too much data - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps

Hello Guys, I just brought an S3 and I was looking at my o2 account and I've used nearly 300mb off data in 5 days and my allowance is only 1gb.
I had looked at my data usage and saw that its the facebook app that is using the most I was wondering how to limit the app to use little data.
Thanks, Gary - The S3 noob

Think this is a QA section question but if you go into the facebook app and settings- refresh interval and change this to your liking.

Go to Facebook Settings, change Refresh Interval to Never, Location Service to Off and Contact Sync to No Sync.
Remember, you still will get Push Notifications and data shall be used only that which you do it foreground.

use "whats local today app" for 50% data use compared to Facebook App.

Hi there!
Try an app called "whats local today" for accessing facebook, google+, linked in, twitter, tumblr on 1 screen itself, just a tap away.
Its a new style browser for mobile devices. I use an iPhone 5s, 'WLT' works best for me. 50% less data use compared to actual fb app.
No push notifications though!

How choose several mails in Gmail?

In Gmail - how can I choose several emails in one go, to either delete them all or mark them all as read? Its bit frustrating to go throught the mails one by one... Any one knows how to do it?
You press on the tick on the left hand side of the message.
You press the MENU button while in GMail, and you get the option to delete a bunch in one go. I had this problem when I first used the Desire lol.
ok...
Thanks works great when I need to delete!
I still need to do it for those I want to 'mark as read'... there is no tick on the left!
Thanks

Either you are missing the obvious or you have some sort of messed up version of Gmail there's always been a tick on the left to select Emails, right from Android 1.0

I was using a different widget that has all mails alwaus open on the scene. Switched it now to the other u referred to.. works ok. Thanks
Slightly off topic, but related to this one.
Does anyone know how to multiple select email that has sync'd from Exchange? The standard mail app doesn't seem to offer this, or I'm going blind
Thanks
Dae
I actually decided to go back to the HTC mail widget as it gives notification for incoming Google mail... but its bit irritating as you cant choose several emails as in the above mentioned GMAIL app. Hope someone could figure it out!!
This is similar I use at moment:

There's no setup for it because it's push... probably much better for the battery than checking every x amount of minutes. You just get an email pushed to the phone when you get a new one.
That sounds cool... but how can I disable that for night time? When I got the phone there was a setup somewhere (lost it now!) where you can choose peak and non peak time updates - wonder if that can be used for Gmail?
Thanks
just turn the internet off at night time.
add the widget to the home screen and switch it to off when you go to bed.
from the home screen, menu>add to home>widget>settings>mobile data
So there's no way to select multiple/all emails for delete/'mark as read' using the HTC mail app?
I'd like to know this aswell, I havnt found a way either
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
no, i don't think the HTC Mail application does not give you an option to select many emails at once.
its silly really lol specially in the morning when I have around 12 rubbish emails from overnight

You can select multiple emails for deletion in the exchange mail app. Just select menu>delete and you then get selection boxes next to all your messages

[Q] HTC Calendar sync pulling WAY too much data

Since vodafone are starting enforcing their data allowance limits in October, I've been keeping a closer eye on my data usage and was surprised to see that, some days, I'm using 60-70mb. I knew that I was actively using a fraction of that so it had to be something running in the background.
I've got things like facebook and seesmic set to update once an hour and most other things set to manual or once a day updates. Most heavy data use apps like Spotify and Guardian Anywhere are set to only update over Wifi so I couldn't figure out what it might be.
After some searching, I managed to find an app which can break down data usage per app. It turns out that, in the space of a few hours, Calendar used about 20mb just running in the background. I'm guessing this is an HTC sense problem rather than an android issue with just keeping my gmail account in sync, since gmail and contacts aren't pulling down anything like the same amount of data.
Does anyone know how to set refresh intervals for calendar without affecting the other gmail account sync data? The only options I can find is straight on/off with no frequency options.
I'm rooted and using stock rom, since I prefer stability and even the most stable custom roms tend to have a few quirks here and there, but I cant afford so much data to be squandered when it doesn't need to be so might switch, but in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions? I tried searching the forum but it doesn't seem like there's anyone else having the same problem.

Hi, would you mind posting a link to this app? I have the same problem and have searched for something to break down usage per app but couldn't find anything. Thanks, Stoatie
Wow! Now THAT explains everything and why I was averaging 50-70mb/day as well! I'm also watching my data usage, so thank you so much for this post...
As for an answer, my best advice for now....remove the tick that allows your calendar to sync with your gmail account. The only reason you need to sync your accounts is if you frequently use the web app and as a backup option. So, you can turn off that and your contacts sync and everything will still stay as is and save you precious data. Then you can sync everything once a day or every couple of days if you're into flashing roms or are prone to lose phones, etc.
Hope that helps...I'm about to try out and watch my data usage as well!
+1 for a link to the app thaat breaks data use down by app

+ 2 for the same app please - I know a few guys have been looking for such an app on here for some time now.
Much appreciated.
This is what I use:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/trafficstats/com.trafficstats
appstorehq.com/networkstatistics-android-174793/app this is the one I used. It's been discontinued but is still available in the market. To be honest though, the one posted above looks like the better app, and it's free.
Thanks for the reccomendations

Does turning off background data save lots of battery?

I really don't need or use it i dont need weather facebook or twitter updates does turning it off help battery a lot does anyone know?
And is there a way to still access the market is don't like enabling it to use it bc i forget to turn it back off and there's no toggle widgets for it.. thanks

Idk about a lot of bg data but it will save some at least. What do you mean about the market? Could you explain more?
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
The market requires background data to varify services etc... for the apps you mentioned just disable auto-sync. Also keep display brightness low, wifi and Bluetooth off when not in use, check all app settings to ensure they aren't running automatically or frequently updating and also turn vibrate/haptic feedback off if possible.
Yahoo mail doesn't like me when I disable background data -_- how do I take care of that?

Yahoo! Mail and the Market do require background data. Market I understand. Yahoo! Mail, not so much.
In any case, you can use the built-in E-mail app to get to Yahoo! (not Gmail, sometimes labeled "Corporate Email", it's the little envelope with the gold stamp coming out)
Check this thread from earlier today for the settings:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962674
Background does save a lot battery but I use the market and some other apps a lot , so I just leave it on, one thing that can save you a battery is using WiFi , like if you at home and you have WiFi use WiFi instead it will help , and the mail app (blue envelope for HTC sense ) let you set up yahoo, is not push but you can set up how often you want it check and it does appear read when you check online

This didn't work when I first got my phone but it works now? How did you do this magic trick!?
Swyped from my sexy EVO.
Try k9 from market. It is a heck of a email program and free. I removed gmail and yahoo email along with mail.apk. If handles all my general email in a tight package. And to disable background update will save battery life since 3G does not Ned to ba abler.
Yes it does save lots of your battery! Just turn off ALL internet access. Your phone will go for days and days without needing a charge.
(Home menu with free space for an additional icon) Menu Button -> + Add to Home -> Widget -> Settings -> Mobile Network.
When you are not using the phone anything other than phone calls, turn off the Mobile network. All background updates like weather, e-mail, etc will stop until you turn them back on.
(Home menu with free space for an additional icon) Menu Button -> + Add to Home -> Widget -> Settings -> Sync All
This is great to manually turn on the Internet and have the phone sync up all the services then turn off the mobile network.

[Q] BetterBatterystats CM9

I'll most likely get flamed here, but I need an answer. Running CM9 Alpha 5 with BBS (Betterbatterystats) installed. I go to settings>battery>Andriod OS. I'm seeing keep awake greater than screen on times. It's almost a 2:1 ratio, i.g. 2 hour keep awake to 1 hour screen on. My question is...is the sum of all "keep awake" the total of all BBS'S partial and kernal wakelocks?
Yes plus the display time. I average the same. Just got paid Titanium app to freeze some services to try to improve that some.
OK, awesome... Thank you for responding!

I use memory booster lite and watch the task killer to see what keeps popping up. I don't use Gtalk on my phone so I freeze that. Unless I plan on running audio through headphones I freeze DSP Manager and DRM services. Freeze Maps if you are not using GPS for awhile. I use K9 mail so freeze Exchange and Email, also Face Unlock. Hope this helps.

Yes..stupid stock email has no option to show pictures all the time. Even GB defaults to show pictures. K9 allows you to set that option. It is much faster loading graphic emails as well.

Clear cache and data for Gmail app. I've had this happen a few times.

I've had this happen before as well, and sometimes I think it might be something on Google server side, like it can take longer than usual for them to send an acknowledgement of reception? Idk.

Force Close the app and reopening it also does the trick if you do not feel like clearing cache and the like. It will work for a few and be fine then go right back to doing it.
Yeah, I've gotten this on pretty much every Android device I've owned. Pretty common problem and I wish Google would fix it. I just force close, clear cache..then resend.
will this happen with the other email app that came with this phone?
And how do you clear the emails cache?

settings/apps/find Gmail click on it and you can clear cache from there
I've had this happen a couple times before too. The first time, I didn't even know about it until my sister mentioned she never got a reply for so and so email even though I clearly remembered replying to it a week before that. So I went into the app and looked at my outbox and there was about 7 or 8 emails stuck in there that couldn't be set.
Made me a bit mad to say the least. And a year later, we are still having this issue.

I only ever had that problem with stuck outbox when I had a battery saver program "juice defender" running. Works perfectly ever since I stopped using and uninstalled the battery saver app. I read in another thread that those apps do more harm than good.
+1 to clear cache and data
I have had this happen, in over a thousand or so sent emails, four times, it was the same day, and only on 3g trying to send photos as attachments for work.
This has never happened when on wifi. I want to clarify that I use both gmail and the samsung included email app (I like it better for multiple gmail account usage for a few reasons I wont go into here). The samsung app, though it takes longer to load emails (even on wifi) I just like the feel of it better. Gmail sending is usually instantaneous, both apps have been super stable for me, I have adjusted their settings to run to my ideals, which includes hourly pings.
JC
Hey, can someone shed some light as to why Clear Cache button is greyed out in the Gmail application? All I have is Force close and Uninstall updates. Everything else is unavailable.
Thanks in advance.
I have had this problem recenlty, I had to remove my account from the phone and add it again. It even stopped downloading new emails....smh
I think it's google though not the phones
