Hey everyone, just wondering is there is a way to tether via USB using wifi as the source of internet?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app
Yes there is. It's built into the system settings (At least for ICS).

It's called internet pass through I think.

clarification
Do you mean for the PC to tether though the andriod? if that is the case you may need to use something like EasyTether.
Yea, I want to hook a PC up that doesn't have wireless capabilities so I can use wifi on it. I'm running AOKP, I haven't tried to hook it up yet to see if it comes with this rom.

OK just an update, hooked my phone up to my PC and hit USB tether at the settings UI is force closing
EDIT: Using Easy Tether, I have internet but its intermittent and a little slow, but its a start.

There is an app on the Play Store called "Open Garden." It enables Wi-fi tethering on 3G or Wi-Fi for Free.
Before I had Ice Cream Sandwich and was rooted, I always used PDANet, it works great on both Mac and PC! If it isn't in the Play Store anymore, i'm sure you could find the .apk somewhere online. Best of luck!

Hello i have a sprint galaxy s III and i was wondering if anyone has had success tethering a sprint phone to the nexus 7? My phone is not rooted, i would like to keep it that way if at all possible. I use FoxFi and PDA Net and it does connect to my Nexus 7, but for internet only. Google play will not update apps, facebook will not work, Netflix won't work, ect. I tried open garden, FoxFi (by itself), PDA Net (by itself) and nothing else connects. What is everyone else using??? Thanks in advanced!
Well I`m using foxfi and it works very well for me. I`m living in uk.

I tried out foxfi today for the first time. It seems pretty good, but I would like to here others suggestions as well.

That doesn't really answer the OP's post though. FoxFi doesn't look like a real internet connection to all apps though. Is there another app that does any better?

If I understand this right your wanting to connect your N7 to the internet via your G3, if so cannot you just use the mobile access point on the phone, i have the galaxy s and my sister has the S2, both have this options in the settings and once set up and turned on acts just like a wireless router, select it and enter the password on your N7 and your away.. works well on mine

The same on my S3 Nexus Combo, great having unlimited data and unlimited tethering data

I've never tried it, but how about PDAnet?
Foxfi Wifi Hotspot no longer works on my nonrooted Droid Bionic. I can only tether via blueetooth, which doesn't allow all of my apps to work correctly. Does anyone know of a Foxfi alternative?
My Foxfi works fine on droid x to my nexus 7. I don't know what you're talking about not a real connection....
Check it out though, foxfi is definitely awesome.

After taking a trip to the darkside for a year or so (IFail), I decided to rejoin the force by purchasing the Optimus G, mainly for wifi-tethering and more control over my actual phone. I can connect my phone just fine to my Mac (the Optimus appears under devices in airport), but cannot get my Kindle, nor my X-Box to connect to the wifi. Is this an ad-hoc vs. infrastructure connection issue?
Can anybody help with this issue?

Not sure I can help with your ways, but Wireless Tether, from the Playstore, works good for me. You have to have root. Settings are; ics/jb generic, wlan0.

Most wireless tether apps use ad-hoc, which only works for PCs and PSPs it seems like. The built in version you pay for works on some phones like my old evo, but we hack to unlock that first to not pay. I will check it out when I get the chance and see if I can do the same thing.

I can't remember the name of the app, but there is a program that allows 2 mobile devices (tablets and/or smartphones) to connect this way. The app for the host device is a paid app but each addon device utilizes a free controller app. In this instance, your HTC would use the paid host app to be used with a stereo, TV, computer, etc and your s3 (and any other phones/tablets) would use the free remote control app. I'll see if I can find it again

I'll keep my eye out for something, I'm always trying to find different ways to make everything work together at my house...
I've done a lot of research and I'm aware of foxfi able to do this by enabling the proxy built in but will only work when I a ice cream sandwich Rom or later.. To my understanding jellybean rid of this useful feature to become useless.. Is there any workaround anyone have that works.. I can't even get the Internet sharing from my wired note 2 to pc to share out to work.. It sends out a ad-hoc signal which I've read that ps3 don't read.

Yes you can Wifi Tether. You must be rooted though and install a custom ROM. Go over to ptmr3's JediX or Jedi Master ROM over in the Android development section and give one of those a run! CM10.1 works great as well (i find that AOSP ROMs have faster USB Tether speeds).
You can tether your Wifi Connection to a USB Hub on a Desktop (Not sure about PS3) and it will work fine. 4G/3G works great as well!
I can't seem to get it to connect the best thing I can have it do is use foxfi and it will see it but won't have a Internet connection thru the ps3

Myphonexplorer client on phone and then install companion software on your pc. Works great on WiFi too. Awesome app I have been using for years. You can text, call from your pc and sync all your data and make complete backup of your phone to pc. Working great on my note 4.
Have you tried downloading Airdroid from Amazons App Store? Thats how I got redbox on my Note and it works flawlessly even though the Play Store said it was incompatible.

Weird. I'm using Airdroid just fine. Installed it using Titanium backup from a different phone, and I update it through the Google Play store

Samsung sidesync. Free dl on their site. You can run it like remote desktop with your phone on the pc screen or use mouse and keyboard on your phone. Works over usb and wifi.

The stupid thing about sidesyncis that if your pc is wired and not using wifi, sidesync won't work.
I assumed that the dock was wired and that works fine with sidesync.

I should have been more specific about what i was looking for. Airdroid connects, but i was looking for a more "remote desktop" type of thing, not just access to certain data on your phone. Airdroid has a built in way of doing this, but it says its not compatible with note 4. The standard Airdroid stuff is working.
