[Q] Sprint Galaxy SIII Tethering - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So, now that were rooted, CWM is installed, and everything is gravy, I only have one missing piece: tethering. Searches here--maybe because of the new site, or the forum partitioning haven't yielded me anything, or are buggy. Apps are blocked in the market, and I need to use the stock ROM, so I've side loaded a few. But if there are any paid or free maps/methods you're aware of, please let me know. Its the only thing I'm missing.
I suppose its important to note that WiFi Tether for root users came up with errors. This was the method suggested in the sticky for the Sprint SIII Development section.
WiFi Hotspots is a must.

Did you try setting the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)" ? Wifi tether for root worked for me when I changed it to that.
It's the only option I've tried and it worked with my finicky laptop.

Almost all of the custom ROMs here come with one built into the Sprint Hotspot app. Otherwise you can download an app called "Wifi Tether" from the marketplace if you want. Much easier to just use those ROMs though since they have other benefits.
If your on ics, download the newer beta version of the wifi tether and under settings choose your device as galaxy nexus, here's the link to all the wifi tether.apk's
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
iniz94,
the wifi tether on the market doesnt work and I do not know how to change my OS
xST4T1K,
I have tried just about all wifi tethers from the link you provided and none work except Version 6 is seen by my computer but i still cant connect and also I went into settings and changed my device to samsung galaxy nexus and it still didnt work. But when I was using Version 6 which my computer was able to see there was no device showing galaxy nexus obviously due to an older tether.
When I bought the phone it was called Samsung Galaxy S2 but people also refer to it as epic touch 4g. The model # is SPH-D710. Is it because the phone is newer to the market and no one has created a working wifi tether for this model yet?
The phone is a cdma variant of the galaxy S 2 line of phones branded epic 4g touch by sprint are you rooted? if youve never changed your kernel or ROM your kernel may not allow wireless tether to work properly you need superuser and busybox for it to actually broadcast the internet you may need to do a little research and learn how to use recovery and odin and change your ROM and/or kernel so you can have tethering support and sprint has blocked wireless tether apps on our market

Go to the market and get FoxFi. Wifi and Bluetooth tethering, works even without root, and it's not blocked from the market. And it's free.

I have spring samsung epic tough 4g.
I rooted it to a stock OS using a simple method I found on the web here:
http://epic4gtouchroot.com/epic-4g-touch-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-epic-4g-touch-newsph-d710/
I did not install clockwork mod..only rooted my phone.
I then installed the latest ver of wifi tether beta.
I cannot get it to work with Encryption enabled...it works in AD HOC mode without encryption...although, a few times the app crashed on me and one time my phone rebooted when using wifi tether app...seems pretty unreliable.
I searched for foxfi in google store....does not come up for me at all...does this still exist ?
can i install that on rooted phone?
What is your advice to me at this point?
Should I use a custom ROM or wait for a fix on wifi tether?

Any Gingerbread ROM. It depends what you are looking for. Please do not try any ICS roms until you're ready to do so. It can be dangerous to your phone if you don't know exactly how the rom and flashing work with ICS.
Here are 2 of the most popular Gingerbread ROMS out there:
Calkulin's 3.0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
Blazer 4.1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071
Calkulin's has more of a stock look and feel & Blazer's Rom is very similiar but themed blue throughout.
If you are not rooted yet, here is a quick tutorial:

Having an issue loading this on a Samsung E4GT. I've successfully used this on a EVO LTE and a One X. But with the Samsung devices just keep cycling "connecting..." and nothing (not connected to anything). I've tried the proxy and not. I've tried 3G and 4G. I've tried different devices. I've cleared data numerous times. I've tried different Hot spot names and different passwords. I even did the default name and no password setup. Nothing works on the E4GT. Latest OTA. Any ideas.

The easiest thing to do is get it from the Amazon App store. Install the Amazon Android App store, search for FoxFi, and install. Amazon doesn't block it for the carriers.

Sounds like you are trolling.

anyone figured out free tethering on tmobile s3? (tethering for root just doesnt work

I've tried lots of threads that said the only way to get free tethering on the s3 is (tmovile) is by rooting then installing "root users tethering" application.
I followed instructions and used "generic ICS" mode - this worked for my first couple attempts at connecting to tmobile tethering... but now it just doesn't work at all - and only in about 1 in ten time it says it is in tether mode is there ever even a wifi signal to pick up - and when it does pick up most of the time now it wont connect (says internet connection problem on PC)
are there any roms that offer this functionality as standard? or any other foolproof apps?
thanks
I'm rooted on stock and have found no working method.

Yes, it is USB. I've been using it since I had the Mytouch 3G. I don't see a need in using WiFi tether unless you are sharing it with other people or using a Tablet. If you are using a PC then I don't see why you wouldn't want to use USB tethering since it doesn't use any battery power.
Rooted using wifi tether and works no problems. Sometimes i do need to restart wifi tether to get the signal. I am using galaxy nexus (gsm) as the profile.

i believe all the carriers make you pay to use the native wifi tethering.. I use foxfi and it seems to work fine for me. it's on the play store.
TMO gave me free tethering but it would only work with the TMO tethering app (throttled), not with any other app. After I rooted the other apps worked fine and the root tether app is much faster then the TMO app.
Cool. Thanks guys
ClockWorkMod
First, you will need to download the ClockWorkMod tethering app.
Then, you will need to download the driver for your PC. You can download the driver onto your phone open the file on your PC by connecting your phone to the USB. It pretty much walks you through everything to get started. Takes less than ten minutes and voila, you're online. I searched forever to find this and just discovered it. Now all I need is hotspot so I can use this with my Chromebook. Here is the link to download the driver clockworkmod.com/tether/drivers
Just click Samsung drivers and it will download.
It works great. The only thing that I have noticed that may be a problem is that I got kicked off once. I just started using it so I'm not sure if it happens often, but all I had to do to get it back on was turn off the app on my phone, and on my PC then turn it on from my phone and then click start on my PC.
It's only a trial version, but the full version can be purchased directly from the app once the trial runs out for $4.99. Hope this helps! Enjoy!
Samsung galaxy S3 T-mobile Nonrooted
Ok I am new to tethering since I have always used Comcast....
I have the unlimited data plan from Tmo.... Unlimited data plan comes with 500mb of free tether.... soon enough it will run out... I need to make sure my tether works AND make sure if I do these methods they won't find out I'm tethering....
I just wanted to clarify my question...
So how do I go about this....? as of now my phone is not rooted but it will be if need be....
Everything online is telling me to root my phone and use 30934983458 different apps... if anyone is kind enough can someone explain please how this process works (I am not a noob with phones just with tethering)

How To Tether on Jelly Bean?

Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

YouTube Video on it here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.

[Q] easy root method s4 mini

after multiple attempts using the odin method I found an easy root. my phone is rooted but I dont have a custom recovery. While this really doesn't concern me much, my problem is wifi tethering. my previous phone was an HTC thunderbolt on Verizon. my new s4 is sprint. I never had problems with rooting my htc or my wifes razor. I'm not completely green to the world of roms. WiFi tether from the Google play store is what I used on both and I was intending to use this as well for my mini. is their another app I should be using? or is it simply a settings issue? I have read another thread about tethering issues, but that was for the odin method with cm. I followed the directions precisely with the odin method, but it doesn't seem to recognize my phone when I get ready to use odin. it goes to the warning screen, I plug it in, go to next screen. odin says all threads complete (succeed0/failed0) it says this if I try to run it without the phone plugged in as well. this is why I went with the easy root method. I even tried to change the settings in wifi tether. but the only profile it had was for a standard s4. this profile did not work and auto detect seems to fail too. I get a wifi tether started with errors check log. but no log file is saved. I'm pulling my hair out. both me and my wifr need to be able to tether. any help would be greatly appreciated.
No need for an app, look at the screenshots... They're from a full blown S4, but my S3 Mini was the same, so I'm guessing the S4 Mini should be too...
