I'm looking for a simple music player app that lets me do the following easily:
Search my music files.
Get back to my playlists and library without having to close the app and reopen it.
The stock music player is horrible. It has a search but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to go directly to the library once you get a few screens into the app so in order to get back to my library of songs and playlists I have to exit the app and reopen it. Maybe it does have a simple way to do this and I'm just blind and didn't see it but there has to be something better. I tried Android Music and the Play Music app that's also built in and those are easier to navigate back to the main screen but they don't have a search function.
Is there something out there that will do the simple things I want?
I love power amp. It is by far the best music app I've used. There is a two week trial version on the market and I believe it is $5 if you want to keep it.
Google play music app is also very good and free

Free trial and its beautiful. Worth every penny.

cloudskipper is my pick as well, its completely FREE and has a nice, clean looking widget. I didn't like poweramp when I tried it, plus I don't want to pay for a music player app.
Cloudskipper has free EQ as well. Highly recommended

I agree 100%, IMHO PowerAmp is in a class of its own (just the lock screen controls alone make it worth using)
As others have said, Power Amp is nice. However, I switched to Player Pro a while back, and like it even better. As with Power Amp, it's really full featured. The interface is cleaner on Player Pro, and IMO it's just prettier. I also find the buttons easier to control while on an elliptical (they're a bit bigger).

been using PowerAmp for a while now. back then.. this was pretty much the only option if you wanted real good lockscreen controls. audio quality is great as well. i've stuck with this also, since the dev responds to emails quickly. i am curious as to how the alternatives today are. maybe i'll give PlayerPro a shot, though i don't quite understand why the DSP pack is a separate install, when this should already be built into the app like PowerAmp.
I recommend Poweramp as well.
On a side note: Has anyone else experienced incompatibilities with Poweramp and Bean's VZW Custom Stock Rom R2?
Every time I try to open the app it force closes on me.
+1 for PowerAmp. I've been using it since the early days and it's only gotten better over time. Plenty of controls, features, and options with a nice interface. Using it with an ICS skin and it looks great!

Yeah UberMusic is definitely my first choice but not because of the widgets. Out of all my searching, it is literally the only player I have found that has a true shuffle feature (no repeats).

I gave it a try and I really want to like it, but it has no album art grabbing. I mean, I hate to sound so nick picky but I've really grown to like my album art and if you're downloading music, etc, it nine times out of ten has no album art. All of the music players I've used thus far grab the art for you. Course I've not tried Winamp yet.
Am I just missing it somewhere? I am at work, so maybe our wireless is blocking it from grabbing the album art. I'll try again when I get on either HSPA or another Wi-Fi.
If it does grab the album art, it will become my one and only solution.
My favorite music player app is "andLess" -- and the developer is from XDA!
Simple navigation and plays lossless. Bare bones - no equalizer or cover art yet, but the thing just works. Also the bookmarks are nice.
I use it to play music (mp3 & flac) and to listen to audio books.
Tried it but the interface is still in alpha stage to me. Going back to music mod and subsonic. Might go back to doubletwist every once in a while.

You mean andLess? I wouldn't categorize the interface as alpha stage. It is stripped down and I think stingy on resource/battery use, which for me is a good thing. I use an audio player to listen to music or spoken word, not for staring at album art and visualizations.

What do most of you guys use in your vehicles for audio player from EVO phone? Ive tested winamp, poweramp, & currently the music player from CM7 stock. BTW what music player is used in the latest CM7 mod, when I had destroyer v2 it wasnt used there? I really like how it sets up all your folders & you can go thru each one. Poweramp has an EQ which people rant n rave about but it seems like the EQ gives an exaggerated sound when used in a vehicle with speakers...Opinions?
i'm using miui music player. you need to manually sign the apk and everythign to get it to install, but it's worth it. i can shoot you a copy if you want. i love the lyrics support and automatic album cover downloads, the app is just plain awesome.
Do you have any pix or videos of it in action? Dont care for the album art really jus that I can go into seperate folders with music.
here's the app itself. signed, so just install from adb or through a file browser.

I haven't found a music app yet that can compete with an iPod's. Sadly, I hate everything Steve Jobs' name is attached to but their music app far surpasses ours. If I find/make one you can bet your ass I'll be posting it here lol.
For now, I use MIUI (what dkdude uses) when I have music on my phone and otherwise I just use my Zune HD.
+1 Sucks, but true.
PowerAmp
I use Power Amp. It is my favorite!
It's available on the market.
If you like the CM music app, try "Music Mod". It's free in the market, and also the app CM chose for their roms.
EDIT: I'm currently using the MIUI music app as well because I'm on MIUI... plus it's really good. In the past I've used Player Pro, it's really nice. They've recently added an equalizer, which isn't a big deal to me, but is for some. Mixzing is another decent one.
I use the stock Sense music player. Works just fine.
I use poweramp, it was actually the second app I paid for (first was metamorph). I just make sure to turn on the large lockscreen widget.
I have it piped in through the AUX port on my head unit. As far as the EQ and sound and all that, I just set up custom EQ settings (on the head unit itself) for my AUX input mode and everything sounds great.
I especially love how it starts playing automatically when I plug in the headphone jack, and stops playing automatically when I take it off.
the newest MIUI music is really great. Not sure if dkdude has a working versions of it though. Settings always causes a force close. i dont care much for the apple music. Took all my music off my ipad, which is a paperweight anyway
Dont you guys who use poweramp find the EQ sound to be exaggerated? Everytime Ive used it in my car and put on the EQ the SQ doesnt sound natural it sounds exaggerated & not right...Also if I were to get mp3s with 320kb would it sound as good as using an original CD or thats just not possible?
I'm a big fan of Cubed. I've used just about every free music player in the market, and IMO, nothing comes close.
ive used poweramp, cube, doubletwist, stock sense, stock gingerbread, but now i switched over to using MixZing, its my fav so far, its free, has an equilizer, automatically downloads album art and updates the tags, give u a folder search. its good stuff!!
I totally feel you on PowerAmp. IMO it does exaggerage the range by the EQ; in most cases I just turned it off. I did dig the interface for a bit but it was hard to use one-handed for me. Also, it was a bit unintuitive.
I'm using the stock player in CM7/Gingerbread and I'm perfectly happy with it. Simplicity trumps most things for me. When I run Sense, I just use the Sense player.

I don't bother with the EQ in PowerAmp, but I've always felt it was kinda annoying to mess with software EQs, especially on a touchscreen. I just adjust settings as needed on the head unit itself, and that works great.
As to your second question, that's something that's been debated in audiophile circles for a long time. With a car stereo, you might notice a slight improvement with FLAC/CD over mp3, but it will be only in the highest of the high frequencies and honestly you'd have to be actively paying attention. And that's assuming that your audio equipment is even of a high enough fidelity in the first place. Road noise while driving won't be doing you any favours either.
In short: don't worry about it, 320kbps mp3 is more than fine and will sound just like the CD for all intents and purposes.

I went into the settings, specified that it sync all my playlists and specified I wanted them on H:\ (my SD card), but nothing :/

Interesting.....when you do that doesn't it use up your storage space on the phone, being that it is downloaded to the device storage and also does it not use the data to to download it to the phone?
Google music works like this. It stream music from your library to your android device. If you lose connection it can stream past played songs that it has saved. So yes it uses storage, and yes it uses data. But it doesn't use much storage.

I was liking stock for a while, but then Raycaster3 told me about PowerAmp, yes you have to pay for it but its by far gives you the most options and great sound quality. I did a test also with it to see how it sounds compared to the stock 5.1 sound. And it sounded the same if not better. Then you mix PowerAmp with a nice set of SkullCandy in ear headphones and your golden. I dont mean anything too expensive either I just went with the $29 ones because they also come with a mic. They are amazing. Oh I guess I also use Google Music because I have 40gigs of music stored in the Google Music Cloud.

Not to brag...but been a long time PowerAmp Pro user since my Nexus One days, and used with my Monster Turbine Gold Ear Buds....nothing short of awesomeness...PS....spent the last two days walking the carpets at the CES Las Vegas extravaganza and and I listened to no less than a dozen competing Ear Bud companies. The Monster Turbines won hands down for purest, smoothest, most pleasing sound quality, IMHO. Oh....I did get to demo a new Headset I saw featured on Fox and Friends before my first trip to the show a couple of days ago. My Bose QC15 noise canceling over the ears headphones got knocked of by a new company I first heard about at the show. ZIK Parrot phones. They work wired as well as Bluetooth wireless. Sound was great but the added features of hand gestures to control volume and track changes was/ is the way of the future. Instead of dealing with unplugging the phones to pause, simply remove from your ears and the music comes to a stop. Put them back on and it starts back where you left off. No price on these since they are not yet released to the public.
But don't even get me going on the best of the event....LG's 55" OLED 3D TV. Will knock anyone's socks off...period, guaranteed, and I will bet the farm on this statement. Thickness = to 3 credit cards stacked!!! Sorry for the slight thread drift, BTW....

Just spent an hour comparing. Yes, I downloaded the much needed DSP pack. PowerAMP WINS, IMHO, hands down. Give it a fair try to compare all aspects. Going thru the menu more preferences is extremely important too.
My 3 favorites in order:
1. ZPlayer - I really love the Zune player on Mango and this is a very good clone of it. It has integrated Shoutcast, a nice UI, a very nice lock screen controls that displays picture of whatever artist is playing as the lockscreen background, artist bio, widgets, equalizer and more. It's missing a few features, such as better playlist creation, but it's a very sexy and stylish player.
2. PowerAmp - The most complete player on the market. Has just about everything I mentioned ZPlayer has (minus Shoutcast and artist bio), in addition to good playlist management. Only cons, is it costs $, doesn't have automatic mixing like the Google player, and no streaming from Google or Amazon. Still just about the best player on the market. Only reason I put Zplayer higher is because I prefer the Zune player look of Zplayer, but that's totally personal preference.
3. Google Music - Great player, but a few things are holding it back. If I have music stored locally, when it syncs with Google it will duplicate the music, so for example I have two Nine Inch Nail artists in Google Music. I wish it would not display the music stored on Google if it already resides locally. Also will always stream by default, even if song is stored locally. Again, they need to make it so that it looks to see if song is stored locally and play that instead of reverting to streaming everything. Automatic mixing only available for streamed music (FYI, when I mention automatic mixing, I'm referring to the feature that is similar to Genius on apple devices - both iTunes on iPhone and Zune on WP7 offer this feature for music stored locally, Google player does not). Interface is a bit clunky.
Those are my personal 3 favorites. If I could find one that marries the UI of ZPlayer, with the features of PowerAmp and streaming capabilities of Google Music, it would be perfect.
Thanks,
Very informative. I loved Google Music, but with Tmobile throttling, not feasable. Is there a hack to get around the throttling?

Look for a thread in the General section. Use Throttling for a search. You will find it Read the thread and specifically go here.
https://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=10151082945165054
This was referenced in the thread and goes into more detail.
I don't know how long this is going to work, but I have tested this myself and it does indeed keep yopu separated from T-Mobiles grasp on your data usage. I have the feeling this won't last long, based on too many people talking in the open.
EDIT..many of the Roms are also including hacks that help the throttling issue, but not like this which all together bypasses the counting.
For me it's really a two way tie. Poweramp and miui music.

Like many of you, I am a avid iPhone hater. The iOS software does have one cool feature that would be cool if the devs......thank you for all your hard work btw..... Could bake something into a rom. It is on all apple devices, say you are rocking out to your music with friends and you want to here something on YouTube. Apple software it automatically mutes what you were listening to and starts play the the new audio app you have selected. Just a suggestion, I have very basic programming knowledge so i am not much help, but I think everyone would appreciate this mod.
Thanks,

Unfortunately the music apps i use include YouTube, I heart radio, tune in radio, stock music player, and subsonic and that feature does not work with any of those apps. So I guess it's just not a widely popular idea so far.
I know Pandora does this too. It's all about the apps used, not the ROM.
Even youtube leaves off where u where when u switch to another app or press home and return to youtube

(Sadly) it´s still poweramp for me. "Sadly" just because I don´t like the interface very much. Has anybody seen the "Walkman" app around here? The one that comes with the AC!D package? THAT is a nice looking piece of musicsoftware (at least for me!) But it doesn´t matter as it is not near the sond quality of powerAmp AND (much more important) WALKMAN has no option for genre-sorting!!!
I always feel to try Songbird again, as it really looks nice and sleak...but I always find myself deinstalling it again because it´s still just too laggy.
So soundwise it´s still PowerAmp. When it comes to simplicity and look --> Walkman app!
yes I agree w/Power Amps interface. Incredibly counterintuitive.
But it speaks to the sound of the app cause I'm more than willing to put up with it.

Exactly, and furthermore pretty much unpractical for one handed usage. I don´t know why there are still no themes out there for poweramp...I think when the developer would open up the skinning possibility to the users, there would be a hell more to squeeze out of that app^^

I'm a Power Amp user. Agreed on the interface, its nice enough looking but a bit counter intuitive.
Now this N7player - very good except for one thing. It doesn't do gapless playback (like the default player and many android players seemingly, unforgivable in 2012), until it does, it's a deal breaker Unless I've missed something?
Gold Standard
Its difficult to argue that PowerAMP is not the best and baddest sound on the market. With 3 years running, no one has really held a candle to PowerAMP.
However, I really value the sound quality of Rocket Music Player Premium. It has a great looking interface and sounds as good as PowerAMP IMO.
Bells and whistles are always nice and PowerAMP has plenty of them but I really value the supported audio formats.
RMP Premium also supports media formats outside of the Android supported formats.
PowerAMP is definitely still the "Gold Standard" but there are many players that are comparable. At the end of the day you have to go with works best for your setup - for me it is RMP Premium.
Take it easy.
What I really miss on MOST of the players is a good and customizable tree structure (accessibility) of my music. I always start my "music-adventure" with the genre tree - and the following should just work like I am used to it from my PC (on every software I´ve ever used):
Genre --> Artist --> Albums --> Songlist
Click to collapse
It´s that easy!
But what is it that I have to find on MOST players?
Genre --> Albums --> Songlist. ...or worse ...Genre --> Songlist

Now imagine the chaos that I always feel confronted with when some (a lot) of my beloved artists produced a LOT of albums (scrolling ´till tomorrow). I just can´t understand that this is not a standard anymore (at least an OPTION so that people who don´t care are allowed to customize it).
PlayerPro is in someway better than poweramp, as it allows you to customize the tree a bit more. However, the interface looks kind of ugly to me.
So for me as a music-loving guy it is still a very sad situation on the android market.
Just discovered ttpod. Seriously nice UI with lyrics and for some reason actually sounds better than power amp for me, but in don't do any customization of the equalizer settings in both. But yeah the theme and the awesome sound out if the box, and the fact that it is FREE just makes it flawless.
You guys should try it out. It's available in English too, if you guys are wondering.
