Formatting my external SD card...HELP - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

so i am running AOKP milestone 6 was experiencing camera issues so i reformatted both my internal and external sd
i did them both thru disk utility on my mac to start(FAT32), but they couldnt be read and my phone told me they were corrupt. so i used my phone to format the internal, and that now works fine, but i cant get the external to work within android. I can still mount it through "Mount usb storage" in CWR but I cant figure out how to format it correctly from my mac. When i do format sdcard in CWR it says Error Mounting /sdcard/, but I can mount it to my computer....
This should be a simple thing but its got me stuck for a while now...HELP?

[Help needed!] Cant' mount sd card - dev/block/

Hey guys, today morning i got a problem with my desire. the screen was black and there was no possibility to turn it on.
I restarted my desire and got stuck in boot loop.
So I wanted to restore my backup but everytime the recovery tries to mount the sd card it says "E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1"
and "E:can't find /sdcard/update.zip"
I also tried to mount my sdcard with a cardreader but neither windows 7 nor XP recognize my sd card.
So is it possible that my card is broken, if so that wouldn't be as bad as having a broken phone.
I would apreciate any help!
Thank you
I had this same problem after I tried to answer a call my phone reset and went into a boot loop, I went into recovery which seemed really slow for some reason and the phone would not see the memory card, so I removed battery and left the phone off for ten min's and then tried again and all was well again.
unfortunitely, even after half an hour without battery, it keeps on saying can't mount /dev/block
I guess my sdcard is broken, could that be?
Does it say "Invalid Argument"? If you have a linux system, try and format/overwrite the card (using dd if you can) and you'll see a "short write" error - your card is broken unfortunately. Mine did the same only this weekend
I too have the same problem, but I think mine is way worst!!
I've tried with 2 different sd cards, and I still get the "E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1" and "E:can't find /sdcard/update.zip" error.
If anyone knows a solution...
I just bought a new sdcard...and after doing the whole rooting process again, it works fine! so my problem was probably a broken sdcard. I just wonder how that could happen...didn't touch anything.
Thank you guys
I hope for everyone who has the same problem that a new sdcard fixes the problem
I think it was just age. The one that failed a few days ago for me, was over a year old (I would have thought it should last longer than that).
I know this is an old post, but I had issues with this today and I managed to solve it, I just want to share what I've done, it may be useful for somebody.
I formatted my SD with a 1gb ext4 partition and 7gb fat 32 partition. I put everything back to the fat32 partition but my rom didn't boot up, so I tried to enter recovery and I got the can't mount sd card error.
I just deleted my partition and created a whole fat32 partition, no ext. After that I could use the update.zip with no issues. Updated my ROM, used ROM manager to create the ext partition and now everything is fine.
edit: I'm not sure, but maybe you need to label the partition as sdcard.

[Q] Help! Stuck in Recovery Mode

I've got a rooted droid Incredible that I tried to flash a rom or two with last night. CYanogenmod 6.0.2 continuously crashed due to the email app crashing. So I installed shadow rom .1 and everything was going well until I did something stupid. I formatted my sd card bc I wanted to get rid of old apps/data/music and start over. This seems to have wiped out the .zip files for the roms that were running the os as well (in retrospect, no big surprise). So now, I can boot into recovery mode but the sd card isn't recognized (and it isnt recognizable with a card reader on my mac) so it cant find a rom .zip to boot off of. I have another sd card and that one as well is unrecognizable in the phone. Any help is appreciated!
In clockwork recovery I get:
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 (no such file or directory)
ERROR mounting sd card:!

I'm assuming the second one is recognized on your Mac. Try formatting it to FAT32.

Yup, I've had this problem too. It's a flaw with Android. It won't recognize your card because there's nothing ON it.
The only way I solved the problem was by:
1. Putting the microSD into an SD adapter.
2. Put SD card / microSD into a camera.
3. Power camera on.
4. Have camera format the card, and take a picture.
5. Power camera off and remove microSD.
6. Insert microSD back into phone.
7. Format from recovery.
Funny how a camera can solve a problem a computer and "smartphone" can't xD

[Q] Can't mount SD card (no ROM installed) [SOLVED]

First: Yes I've looked at other threads my problem is slightly different and, yes it is my fault for trying stuff beyond my level of skill but I know XDA members are helpful so I'm trying my luck.
Problem: I rooted the device (HTC Desire) and was running LeeDrOiD V2.2 until I came across the new senseHD ROMs for the HTC Desire and this is where the problems started. In short, I tried to upgrade to the SenseHD ROM and in the process wiped my SD and phone memory. the device can still boot into recovery but it gets the following message when trying to access the SD;
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1)
(Invalid argument)
E:Can't mount /sdcard
The card is 2GB and reads fine on my windows machine. I've tried formatting and placing ETX3 and ETX2 partitions, I've also tried just copying all the old data that was on the SD before I started playing but the device just hangs with a black screen reading "android". The trouble is that all the solutions I have come across for similar problems are solved from "inside" the ROM either through ROM manager or by changing settings. Obviously these are not options for me.
I would like to install the senseHD ROM (RCMixHD v0.11) (or anything at this point) so please could you help to fix this and have a working phone again.
please please please help out if you can, I'll be eternally grateful for any advice.
many thanks in advance!
SOLUTION
I managed to fix it in the end. I got a hold of another SD card from a friend, put a ROM on it and booted up the phone. Made sure the phone could boot up without the borrowed SD card. Then I took the original SD card and deleted all the partitions (DID NOT FORMAT) in windows using (MiniTool Partition Wizard) placed it back in the phone and booted up using the ROM that had just been installed.
In the phone settings go to Phone and SD storage, mount the SD card (don know why it manages to mount here) and then format it.
Now the SD card is fixed!
You could try repartitioning the sdcard from recovery.
good luck.
I had the same problem. I needed to update my version of Clockwork Recovery. I used the ROM Manager to install the latest version. Now its working for me.

Internal Disk & MMC Gone !!

Firstly Happy New Year to all on the forum, my phone has just had a disaster can anyone help please.
My AT&T Glide crashed today in town, and on reboot I couldnt see the MMC 32gb card, which I thought had been corrupted. Well it was, when I put in another 16gb card the phone wont mount it, then I noticed that the internal usb disk isnt mounted either or even recognised ??
Hows this happened and can it be restored simply do I have to download a new dev rom and re flash from the 1.18gb I have left shown on phone as I cant put it to MMC card.
My phone has custom firmware Osimood.0122.RUXKJ5 which has been great up until this MMC sd card crash.
Any help gratefully received as its my work phone and I need it up and running asap.
Many thanks
Paul
Can you boot into cwm? I assume you have it installed. See if you can access the internal sd card from there. If yes then most probably a simple flash will fix everything, or even a nandroid backup assuming you have that as well. If no its not seen in CWM, then I do not know someone else will have to chime in, seems like something is very wrong for it to suddenly lose its memory. Could be some type of controller our buffer that went.

Thank you for your reply, I went in to CWM and can see an update file on a the sd card so technically if I get the Osimood zip file I could reinstall the system but I am unsure which disk it is seeing this file from I dont think its the external MMC or internal USB so how to I get the file on a storage area that the phone can see.
On the phones settings, under storage pane, USB now has the option to Format USB storage, this has appeared since mounting the system files etc within CWM as most were set to unmounted, but it would not let me mount the sd card as far as I could tell from CWM, when I go to update system menu the option to install update.zip but which disk is this as I could not mount any disk from CWM to view mounted files such as directories etc.
I am in the process of recovering the MMC card that the phone crashed so not all is lost, but I am pretty sure there were files in the Glides USB storage that I would like to save if possible, if I format this storage I am unlikely to recover whats on it, but would a straight reinstall of Osimood format this disk anyway ?
One last question does anyone know what the option "download" is on the power off menu on Osimood it is along side recovery, reboot and power off etc.
ATB
Sorry one last thing I have noticed, when in storage settings SD card has the option to mount when selected it says preparing sd card but nothing actually happens the notice just goes and I'm back to square one, USB has no option in the menu to mount just to format.
I hope that the above is significant in what has happened here.
Thanks
Boot into CWM, enable "mount USB storage", then use a PC to check the internal storage for filesystem problems.
If that doesn't fix it, next step is to factory reset I'm afraid.
Hi everyone, thank you so much for all the assistance I have been at work and therefore forced to format the internal disk which once down the ext sd card became visible again ??? once reinstalling the apps again all is well again, my biggest issue is that all the sd card app back ups failed me as it wiped the ext sd card the internal was wiped on reformat so had to start again.
Note to self back up apks to computer is much safer the ext sd card.
Just hope it doesnt happen again the apk shopper was the culprit that crashed it all.
Many thanks brilliant forum.

[Q] Can't mount SDcard

I really really need your help guys I think I bricked my friend's fone -- seeing how epic this ICS Pureness rom is I tried installing it onto his fone -- everything went well -- but the rom won't detect his sd card -- I can use it via cwm -- I did all the flashing through it but still it won't work.
I tried mounting it through the rom -- settings > storage -- there the mount sd card button has no effect and says insert memory card -- then i went into cwm and did unmount /sdcard -- then mount /sdcard -- still it wouldn't show up..
I then tried to format it using windows it formatted alright but still it wont detect !!
then I did this -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949372 -- still won't work
please help me out!!

Did you try to format sd on cwm? I tell you beacouse i 've gote same issue few days ago, trying roms and sd2ext, and trying diferents ways to format it and finally it work, dont worry.
i was doing the exact same thing -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310309 -- was trying this out
so I had the fone on -- and created a ext3 parition of 2 gb using mini partition tool -- this was all when the fone was working and the fone was connect as mass storage --
then i installed the rom - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788701 -- and when it booted up -- i couldn't see the sdcard -- and the mount option was greyed out
I did try the fomart /sdcard option from cwm it did not have any effect --

well how did you fix it ?
When creating a partition use CWM or put the card in a reader, trying while the card is in the Phone and connected to the PC will give issues.

Use the Phones option instead, I think that's what I did, but if the Phone isn't reading it then not too sure what to do next.

I tried using the mount and storage > format /sdcard option from CWM as well -- it completed successfully -- but did not work
the sdcard is detected by CWM as I installed the rom and mods through that -- only that once the rom and everything is installed and when I boot into it -- I don't see the sdcard -- says Mount SDcard under -- settings > storage -- and the button is greyed out !!
will deleting all partitions and creating new ones have any effect on it using disk manager in windows ?
ohh and another thing -- when the SDcard is replaced with another one it works on the fone !!
Deleting the partitions is worth a try, I resolved my issue before without a card reader but can't recall exactly what I did, and I got the issue by trying to create one with the Phone connected so just keep trying.

yes I did try another sd card -- it worked -- haven't tried deleting the partitions and starting fresh -- that will be the first thing I try tomorrow!
will do it via windows disk management -- using a card reader.

Great news guys !! -- got the SD card working -- as told by you guys it was indeed the partiitions that were the problem
so here's what i did -- put the card into card reader
ran it thru mini partition tool
deleted all the partitions on the sd card
created new partitions -- fat32 and ext4 (for apps2sd)
and installed rom again !!
you guys are awesome -- I <3 XDA
