I got my shiny new ZL C6506 on Friday morning and by Friday afternoon I already had a few pretty good scratches on the screen. This only got worse over the weekend. I assumed it was gorilla glass but sure enough I look on gsmarena.com at the specs and its scratch-resistant and shatter-proof glass. I guess I will have to start checking this before I buy phones from now on. I just assumed a $600 phone would have better glass. Otherwise, I love the phone. This is the first factory unlocked phone I have been able to find that has AT&T LTE bands.

why don't you put that thin layer that guards the screen. I have an xperia arc (yeah, old phone), I have it since 7 months and my screen doesn't have a single scratch, yet.

I did think about it but I've had a Note 2 for months and it barely has a scratch on it. I haven't had a phone scratch this easily since my Galaxy Nexus, its probably a similar glass.
Why don't you remove the preinstalled "screen protector" if you got scratches on it?
Sent from my C6503 using xda premium
OP, are you sure the glass itself has scratched or does it have a preinstalled SP on it?
Regardless of which glass it is, it will scratch. I have had plenty of phones with GG2 and though not immediately visible, under a strong light, you can see plenty of micro scratches when looked at from a particular angle. I hate putting on SPs myself, but as of now, theres no phone with a glass that wont scratch.
They should learn to reach things before they post. What they have scratched is the screen protector on the screen that it came withpreinstalled. I'm using nothing but the preinstalled protector but I haven't scratched it yet.

I second this. The 6506 comes with a pre-installed screen protector (look closely & you'll see it) -- your scratches are probably in that, rather than on the actual glass. I've had my 6506 for nearly 2 weeks now and I have no scratches on it anywhere.
The only thing that it seems the 6502/3 (?) comes with that the 6506 does not is an extra screen protector in the box. It just has the one pre-installed. If you look near the edges of the glass, you'll probably notice that you can see the edge of the screen protector. I've been tempted to remove it and replace it with something a bit nicer, but I haven't thus far, and haven't had any real problems.

You are correct, I did not receive an extra screen protector with my c6503.

Sorry I didn't realize it had a screen protector preinstalled. I didn't see anywhere that it stated it had a screen protector on it. I wonder if that is what is affecting the viewing angles. I don't want to remove it to find out. Thanks guys

What is affecting the viewing angles is the screen itself. No SP makes the screen look washed out from an angle, the privacy ones just dim it out

I think he meant to say that the 6503/6502 comes with an additional SP. But from your comment it seems like the 6503 does not. Mine came with one. I have a 6502 though :cyclops:
I want to remove my SP (I have an Xperia arc though). Can I use the SP as a stylus pen, because there are many tutorials on how to make a stylus pen from a screen protector
I think you'll find Sony had used dragontail glass on the ZL. If so it won't scratch easy. Sure the screen protector will though strange move from Sony even if it's shatter proof protection.

wrong the good privacy display protection changes the viewing angle a lot!! And thats ment to be!
I checked a few! And e.g. if u r sitting in a plane with a good protection the guy beside u cannot see a **** of your display..)

the factory installed sheet is not a regular screen protector but a "Shatter Proof Sheet" which can be easily scratched. some users report that in XZ, the SONY logo is printed on this sheet.
below are the links for these cases.

I think you misunderstood, or I couldnt explain well. Privacy SP dont wash out your display when looked at from an angle. You cannot see anything because they dim it out completely. Not make it appear all white.
If you remove the shatter proof screen protector you need an oleophobic coating on it or it will be filled with fingerprint in no time. A simple method to do so is using rain repellant on car windshield, something like RainX will do just fine
The anti-shatter film on my ZL didn't last a day without scratching. The fabric of my back pocket (denim) is too stressful for it. So, is Sony going to void my warranty if I remove it and replace it with a the Skinomi I ordered on day 1?
Note: the screen on my gen 1 Galaxy S took the same treatment for 3 years without a scratch.
Can I buy another anti-shatter film from Sony?
I have got my C6502 with not installed protector and spended about 3 hours to install is myself.
I have almost damaged the protector.
Talked to Sony
Called Xperia support. and Sony Store. It took 4 calls total because they kept passing the buck to each other.
I had to get at least one rep to Google the coating before they even believed that it existed.
And, of course, from there, they assume removing it voids the warranty...
...not because they've been told by Sony ... but because they think so.
They all seem to agree, however, that carrying a phone in your back pocket for a few days without it scratching is a reasonable expectation.
I'd love to know the engineering rationale behind this stupid coating.
I CAN'T be "keeping manufacturing cost down" with a $760 retail price.
For that, it should have Gorilla or Dragontail glass.
If it does have it, then it should be fine to remove the film.
You'd think Sony would have trained their staff on this. It HAS to have come up by now.
I got 2 Xperia ZLs, C6502 black and white few days ago for me and my wife. One bought through Newegg and the other from Amazon. Neither came with extra screen protector.
Greetings everyone!
This is my first post, so go easy on me .
I will be purchasing Xperia Z1 soon, so I did a bit of a research on the phone. To my disappointment, Sony puts an ASF (Anti Shatter Film) on the front and back sides of the phone. This film is NOT scratch resistant, so - as some people claim - a few weeks old phones already have some scratches (and this is with normal use). It can be removed, but it voids the warranty (I've read that this is only a screen warranty, but this needs to be confirmed). As a side note, you will also lose the Sony logo from the front as it is on the ASF (logo at the back of the phone is baked into the glass, though).
Additional info about ASF removal:
It is most probable that removing the ASF will void the warranty of the display but not the rest of the device.
akselic said:
Hi everyone.
I asked Sony for a clear explanation on the ASF and the warranty concerns that we have. I tried looking through but couldn't see if anoyne else got an official reply from them but here's what they told me in an email:
The purpose of the anti-shatter film (ASF) is to make the display on your Sony Xperia Z1 withstand being dropped from greater heights. The anti-shatter film has a positive effect on the sensitivity and accuracy of the touch screen. In the unlikely event of the glass cracking, the ASF can protect against cuts. If you peel off the ASF, the display loses its anti-shatter characteristics.
Removal of the ASF itself doesn´t void the warranty of the device. However, any physical or cosmetic damages to the display where the ASF is removed will void the warranty.
The ASF is unfortunately not scratch resistant, therefore it is not replaced within the warranty if it gets scratches. We advice you to apply a scratch resistant display cover on top of the ASF to protect it from scratches.

For us as customers the key point is that our Z1 is still protected by the warranty after removing the ASF as long as we don't claim cosmetic or physical damage on the display that we have removed the film from. It might be a nice idea to add this in the OP as this is what their support department told me and it's how they treat the warranty regarding the ASF.

A WORD OF ADVICE:
In case you are planning to remove ASF, it is suggested to obtain such information yourself, as this statement from Sony official, might not be respected in a country you live in. Receiving a confirmation from a representative of the customer support yourself, will get your ass covered under most circumstances.
There are four options:
Get used to the scratches on your new phone (yeah, right)
Buy a scratch resistant film
Buy a tempered glass protector
Buy a liquid screen protector
None of these options are perfect. Here is why:
Self Explanatory, unleass you are a fan of a weathered look
The films, while getting more and more advanced, are still a piece of plastic, and will never look and feel like a premium glass surface. Additionally, they wear out in time and need to be replaced. On the plus side, they provide a good scratch protection (and shatter protection if anyone cares about this), with almost no added thickness to the phone.
Tempered Glass protectors feel as the true surface of the phone - this means a lot for a device that is "felt" with your fingers 90% of the time. They do not wear as quickly as the film, but they can crack if hit hard enough. However they will typically take the blow themselves thus saving your screen. Unfortunately they add to the thickness of the phone (typically between 0,2 - 0,4 mm which is 0,008" - 0,016"). Also, there will be a problem obtaining a Glass protector for the back of your Z1.
I have not analyzed this subject thoroughly, as my thread will be about the Tempered Glass protectors. However, I think it's still worth mentioning. I don't know if the three product I've found have the same properties, but it seems that it involves Sapphire (which is 9H on the Mohs Scale) applied as a liquid through a nano technology. I don't know much about it, so I will not list the pros and cons.
Here are the liquids I've found:
Dynaflow Liquid Armour Screen Protector
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=xdadevelopers-21
Crystalusion Liquid Glass Screen Protector
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/crystalusion-liquid-glass-screen-protection-p39834.htm
Nanostate Liquid Sapphire
http://www.nanostate.co/scratch-proof-screen/
I you are anything like me, you're probably striving to retain this premium glass feel of the Xperia Z1. Therefore, only options 3 and 4 are valid for you. Unfortunately - even if liquid protection works as advertised, it can be applied only to a glass surface (or so I have been told). What it means, is you would have to get rid of ASF, and lose the warranty. This leaves us with option 3 - The Tempered Glass protector.
I've looked around the internet and it seems, that - although the problem with Z1's ASF is prevalent - the information about eligible glass protectors is somewhat scattered. Some of the most useful info I've found in these forums, and that is why I've decided to put my findings here.
I have not tested the products below (which is understandable, since I don't have the Z1 yet), so I'm counting on you guys, to provide some insight. For me and anyone who might be interested in buying one.
I've put all the info I could find on these glass protectors, but something might be inaccurate (e.g. a product looks different on two different photos). If editing posts is possible on these forums, I will update my list with the data you provide. Please provide the source if you want me to update the info.
Products are listed alphabetically. The price is the lowest I could find. The exchange rates are from 2013-11-09. All manufacturers claim that their product was designed for Xperia Z1.

Absolutely wrong, I have one on my Z1 And it conforms to the edges of the screen perfectly, it feels amazing to touch as well. There is a cutout for the proximity sensor but not the camera. The thickness is .3mm.
Cases still fit since they hug the bezel and not the screen.
EDIT: I think you may be confused at to what rounded edges means, it does not mean that the corners curve a lot, it simply means that the glass thickness tapers off at all edges so you don't have a layer of glass with sharp edges. A rounded edge screen protector and a non-rounded one will have the exact same fit on a screen, but the one without rounded edges will have a 90 degree angle the edges in the Z-Y or Z-X plane, while the rounded one will have a smooth gradient.

I can also confirm that the Nillkin does NOT have a cutout for the camera either - only the proximity sensor.
The edges are beveled so that the glass layer feels almost built into the phone. Non beveled glass edges are by no means sharp to the touch, but beveled edges make a huge difference IMO. It gives it a very premium feel to the protector.

agreed, I had the speigen models that had sharpish edges, very annoying as the glass would slightly scratch my face/ear when trying to talk

I actually based my commentary on the photo, since there is no other reference material (the system is not allowing me to add an outside link - which is odd because I was able to put a bunch of links in my opening post - but the photo can be seen on Brando's website). Removing ASF is actually a very interesting topic. I think I'll add a poll to see if people remove their ASF before applying the glass protector.

I know that the Spigen I've found is sold in Japan only but perhaps someone can confirm whether they made the edges rounded for the Z1 protector?

I don't see any noticeable difference, but the glare is Mitch lower now and direct sunlight looks a lot better.

I just installed my nillkin today and it made me very happy. I removed the ASF also. The screen is now much more clearer, smoother, and the colors are more vivid. With the Sony logo being removed, I feel the phone looks sleeker and incognito-ish. I have read brando is thinner but I have yet to try it.

This is actually quite valuable, although JuicyBrah said that he doesn't see any noticeable difference (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47378880&postcount=15). If what you're saying is true, you've just convinced me to remove my ASF

According to the info again provided by JuicyBrah (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47294372&postcount=3), Brando is 0,3 mm, so it's the same as Nillkin. The thinnest I could find is Glass-M (0,2 mm).

Removing the ASF was easy. I used an X acto knife to start peeling off at a corner. Once it is gripable, you can peel it yourself from there. After that, I washed the screen with soap and hot water since it is waterproofed. :fingers-crossed: Then, I immediately apply the screen after it dried off.
asf warranty
To all who removed their asf, aren't you worried about the warranty? Especially with all the reboot/shutdown and other random problems this phone has? People have been able to get their unit exchanged for a new one because of those issues, but without the asf what are the chances it would be replaced?

I emailed the German Sony Support regarding the Shatterproof Protector and the warranty. According to them, if you remove it you will loose the warranty for mechanical and cosmetic defects of the screen, not for the entire phone.
I also asked whether one could buy a genuine replacement of the protector, but that is not possible at the moment.

Hi Guys
Orzly tempered glass screens on amazon.com are just $7.99
im sure anyone who has brought these before will agree that its an amazing price
anyway i thought id spread the love and share this with you, as i dnt know how long it will last. I dont think anyone can say there is a better glass screen out there for the oneplus one than the orzly version
No link?

The only downside in confront with official tempered glass - the swiping is sturdy as if the upper layer is not good (oleophobic my arse) as it leaves smudges everywhere once you barely touch the screen (the original one needed really "sticky" fingers to do so)... I tossed the original one cause of the upper cut out holes, now I'm maybe regretting that decision...
Anyways, low price is inviting... but it lacks the good oleophopbic layer and swiping all over the screen is hard IMO.

No complaints here, everyone I've shown it too loves the way it feels.
I've been using mine since Christmas. I would never go back or switch to anything else.
I pulled my Orzly glass off my OnePlus and it feels SOOOO naked. The screen also looks Flat since that beveled edge on the glass protector is no longer there. Looking to get a new one soon.
Guys don't buy Xtreme Guard blablabla screen protector, they send me 3 protectors(2 for OPO, 1 for GS5), the plastic box is fine but inside 1 protector is broken
Its obvious they send me a broken screen protector
Also they didn't send any cleaning cloth or squeegee card
I'm sure these are the same screen protectors that you can buy from chinese sellers on ebay for $1, btw aren't oleophobic
Just looking for any leads for a full screen tempered glass screen protector that actually cover the front. The one I have purchased doesn't cover the edges and glass just extends over curved area about an 1/8 of an inch. Need one which is actually curved on ends and makes contact.

I did, I actually ordered 2 different 3d full screen tempered glass protectors. The are both the same. They only seal on edges of glass and allow dust and dirt in openings for camera and proximity sensor. The center of glass does not fuse with adhesive as other protective glass. Basically it's a glass cover Sq

Not better on XA, only a small adhesive line on the border of the protection, corners are less sensitive to fingers and like you some dust by cam and proximity sensor, just better than nothing... Tried one previou without 2.5D, too small and very ugly for the screen but no dust.

I've decided to leave the screen protection for now and gone with a orzly slim fit case. All the screen protection is either ugly as hell with three small daft holes for the camera, Sony logo and proximity sensor or they don't cover the whole screen and look as much use a chocolate fireguard

Ouch sorry to hear that. Does it at least have oleophobic coating?
I think I'll pass on screen protector just like on my other two phones. Todays 2.5D glas screens doesn't allow for good protectors unfortunately.
Tried like 3 TGP but nothing stays more than a week. So moved to gadgetshieldz thin screen protector. It stays calmly on my XA ultra.

I know this is a year old thread but got the phone last week for only $150 so i figured I'd bump with some info.
Found your post and ordered that film as well. Didn't realize it was shipping from India though so there is a wait. But thanks for the tip.
Bought this film (2 pack) in the meantime which is applied dry and surprisingly didn't bubble at all. Might actually keep it on the phone and keep the one you got as a backup. It doesn't wrap, but is pretty good

Hi,
can someone suggest me a screen protector for xperia 5 II that covers the whole display?
I read a lot of reviews about screen protectors that are smaller than the screen due to the curved edges.
Actually I have a Spigen that covers the whole screen, but I want to try a new one.
Thanks in advance
The one i have covers the full screen but the touch sensitivity at the sides are bad. Looking for recommendations for full screen that does not affect the side sensitivity.

I use one made by polish company, its also not a glass one so you might not fancy it, but it has some cool stuff to it, like self regeneration(it kinda does that), 99% germ cancelling(confirmed by some polish government company, and tested by some european one with certificates) its sleek and doesnt change colors nor does it interfere with touch, the protector is 3mk SilverProtection+ im darn happy with it, but it might be hard to get outside Poland, although still worth a try. I also use spigen clear armor case

Thanks. I will prefer glass type screen protector still. I have used something similar in the past from phantom skinz.
I'm using the Gorilla IQ Sheild on my Note 10+ which has a curved screen. It's an inexpensive fairly easy wet apply urethane that's very durable. This one has been on for about 8 months... that amazes me. Zero issues.
Unfortunately I don't think one is available yet for your model... I may be wrong.

I got the Supershieldz Glass cover through Amazon. I've been using it for four days and it's amazing. I've had to wipe the screen once in four days. I have a camera case, of course, and I can't feel a gap between the case and the cover but if I slip a fingernail in I can find a small gap.

Good value, seem to do its job.
Covers the flat part of the screen there is a a gap - as expected.
If you do not fit it perfectly, there may be a part that is not glued to the screen.
Quality seem good, maybe a little sharp edges.
I got what I expected, it may not be what you want though.
The fullscreen protectors are hard to fit and come off more easily. Some cases are hard to use with fullscreen protectors too (and I take off the case often).
The protector in combination with a Caseology Vault makes it harder to side sweep and to use side sense. Sensitivity for side sweep should be set to highest. I am not happy with this.
