Hi all,
Does somebody use an external GPS receiver for car navigation (navigon/sygic etc)?
I've used my external holux unit a couple of times. I used it in navigon together with the app Bluetooth GPS.

Thanks,
I also bought an Holux today...(GPSlim 240), and it seems it's working GREAT..
Just curious, can I ask why you would use an external GPS receiver, rather than the internal one?

I've had problems with my internal receiver at two diffrent occasions. Had the external receiver lying in the car so I decided to use it. Worked like a charm
Makes sense. I also have an external receiver from the days when phones didn't have internal GPS receivers, but I would expect the One X receiver to work effectively without needing to resort to using another device.

You would think so, but I've had nothing but issues from mine as well. Just doesn't seem to want to stay on course. Maybe my internal gps receiver is bad?

I think I had better test mine out on the way to work in the morning!
I wanted to use my phone as navigation but i had a poor gps signal, at first i tried a couple of fixing tools but they didn't work as good as i hoped....
now with my external gps receiver and the bluetooth gps app, i have 12 sat's in no time and always a good gps signal...whereever whenever...
I am going to be looking at a long (well say 5 to 6 hours) trip, and was thinking of ways to avoid overheating the HOX, and thought this might help. Anyone who has done this - does this :
1. How did you make it use the external GPS
2. Did it therefore not use the internal GPS at all or just supplement it (given what I am trying to achieve)
3. did it revert OK to the internal GPS when you went back to wanting to use it?
Cheers
I recommend the app Bluetooth GPS to connect to the external receiver. When it's connected the internal receiver won't be used.
When you turn off the application the phone will automatically use the internal receiver when needed.
This will save you some battery but the navigation app and Bluetooth will still draw a lot of juice.

Hi friends
Since about 2 months I can no longer get gps fix with my HTC Desire. My 2 year old kids love it as much as I do, but unfortunelly they let it drop in the ground too often.
I'm afraid that the gps antenna is damaged, because the fact is that the gps really isn't working anymore.
A few years ago I used a windows mobile 5 phone with TomTom, and it accepted an external bluetooth antenna as wel as the integrated gps module.
Unfortunelly, TomTom is not suported on android. Do you know any android navigation software that accepts a bluetooth external antenna so that I can keep using my desire as a gps device?
Thanks in advance.
Hello,
are you sure it's the antenna's fault? Maybe some settings are off (i.e. you're turning on 3G instead of GPS?). What sort of external antenna do you want to plug into it?

Hi
I´m not sure if the problem is really the antenna, but for sure it is not about the settings. I have this phone for about 1,5 years, so I know what to turn on.
Have already made factory settings and reconfigurated everything.
I know that the old phones without gps modules could be bluetotth paired with an external gps antenna. At least the TomTom supported this option. The question is to know if any android navigation software supports it now.

I found some very usefull information here:

Already ordered the gps bluetooth antenna. I will post the results later.

Seeing as I can't get a satellite lock with the internal GPS on my Archos 80 G9 (running stock 4.0.6) I was wondering if it would be worth getting a bluetooth GPS module.
I can pick one up for about £15 on eBay and there are a couple of apps on the Play store that are designed to support these modules.
Has anyone tried one of these with their G9?
What are your experiences?
Alternatively does anyone know for sure if Archos are planning any upgrades to their firmware specifically to address the GPS issues that many appear to be having?
(I know that for some people the internal GPS is working fine on their G9, but it seems it's a bit like the wi-fi issue where some people are unaffected and yet others are having problems)
When you are in the house, you never have a chance to get a signal
Did you try it outside?! And did you wait a little bit?! My Galaxy 5 needs 4-5 mins
to get a fix-sattelite! Normaly you shouldn´t have problems with that...
And Archos is updating their firmware more or less every 4 weeks! So you have a good chance to get a fix for that, if it´s a bug...
Yeah I took my tablet out to an open field last weekend and left it for well over an hour and didn't even catch a glimpse of one satellite.
My daughter has a cheap ZTE phone and can always get an instant lock. Makes me jealous!
Have you tried?
This may seem like a dumb answer but I have found that my 80g9 sometimes loses GPS lock and all satellites if I have been indoors for a while or had the tablet on sleep. If I then turn off the GPS under settings and then re enable the GPS works fine. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the advice but I have tried your suggestion.
I have tried everything conceivable with no success.
It might be considered bad form but I'll reply to my own original question anyway.
I bought a Bluetooth GPS keyring from eBay for £7 inc. delivery and along with the Bluetooth GPS app I'm getting great results.
Might help someone in future...

hi,
you are not alone
i have the same problem with my 101g9. gps did not work at all since honeycomb until ics 4.07 on my tablet.
can you tell us which gps mouse do you have and which bluetooth app is in use? i'm interesting to hear more about a working combination because archos cannot fix the gps problem for all devices (i guess). seems, i need an external bt receiver too.
thanks for info
I use "Bluetooth GPS" by "Googoo Android" from Google Play to connect.
The receiver is listed on eBay as "Vodafone keyring receiver 51 ch GPS sat nav receiver for laptops and mobiles"
I bought this because it is so small; really handy to keep on my keyring.
The seller seems to have loads of the same for sale.
I hope this is useful.
yep, very useful.
thanks a lot

Hi,
I can use my Holux M-1200 USB Gps, on my G101. It works far, far, better than the built in GPS. It locks on many satellites even in the house.
I cannot use the Archos one on V4.06, only on V 3.2.80 and ONLY with WiFi assist on!
The Archos GPS really sucks!
cheers

hi,
the holux m-1200 can work as bluetooth device or over usb cable. you use it via usb?
Holux Bluetooth
Hi,
Yes, The M-1200 works well on Bluetooth.
There are a number of steps to take to get it working.
1. Install Bluetooth GPS from Play.com
2. Go to Settings and turn OFF GPS, and Google location services
4. In Settings go to Developer options and turn ON "Allow Mock Locations"
5. Pair and connect Holux M-1200 to Archos tablet.
6. Run Bluetooth GPS. On its main page enable mock GPS Provider, and Connect.
7. If it doesn't connect, go to Bluetooth GPS settings and try various settings in "Connection Problems related". ( I ticked all three choices)
run any GPS app, Syric, mmTracker, Google maps, they all work fine!
cheers

Hi Team,
I'm using my Acer A100 as a Car Tablet (it's in the dash and working) but the problem is that it's GPS is very slow and many times Synic (the App) acting on me as looking for sat's
looking if someone else is using it like that and has GPS issues or any recommendations for external GPS to use with it
Thanks
I've used my Motorola Xoom for quite some time, bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab2 today to finally install into the dash properly, cant say I've ever had any issues with GPS using either Co-Pilot or Google Navigation (the Xoom has been in the dash but its a little too big and looks really stupid).
If your looking for an external module then anything based on sirf3 chipset is usually reliable, there are newer chipsets but I've always found them to be cheap and reliable when doing projects.
I've never had the need to use an external GPS with an Android device, or even if its possible.
Good Luck!
Best software to use?

If you use an external GPS receiver you will need an interface. When I used my G Tab for navi I used a program call Blue GPS or similar. There a few in the Play Store. I can't see why you should unless the A100 has GPS issues, or it is surrounded by metal in your dash.

I have always used CoPilot and really like it. I had Garmin on my WinMo phone several years ago and loved that but CoPilot is almost as good. IIRC CoPilot is on sale right now and will come with 12 months of traffic for free.
haha where do you attach the gps to? How would you use a tablet that's 9.7" as a gps, would you mount it to your wind-shield?
The best to use is a 7 inch tablet with integrated GPS. As for software beside Google Maps wich you cannot use offline , you may use : Navigon ,Copilot ,iGO ,etc
Hi!
I'm using Navigon for now on my One X and i would like to be able to move to a stationary car gps soon.
My question now is, how can i or is it possible to in some way with ANY car gps move or use my contacts addresses
with a stationary car gps? I've got 450-500 clients that i would like to put into this new car gps.
To me it seems like a long shot, but i feel i must ask before i buy this new gps for the car.
Thanks in advanced

Im sure its possible mate.
First off you need to ensure you buy a SatNav with BlueTooth, and Address Book capabilities.
You should then be able to transfer your contacts (over bluetooth) into your satnav's address book.
Also, its a long shot but if you don't get a SatNav with bluetooth, but it has a mini USB cable, then you could plug it in, mount it as a hard drive, and copy your contacts from your phone to your SatNav.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Sorry, misunderstood your question.

Thanks, i've now looked into this and i must say i can't find any that says it support contacts or likewise...
Will do some more searching, but if you have any specific brand and model that handles this please tell me.
I've searched and looked, and I can't seem to find a complete answer to exactly how the bluetooth works on these things.
As far as I can tell; there is the native bluetooth manager that's built into Android, and then a Bluetooth app. Seems like the app is used to make calls and stream from the phone?
I've also read that there cannot be an OBD2 sensor and a phone connected at the same time? I remember reading somewhere that's because Android doesn't actually handle the bluetooth itself, so if I were to get a bluetooth dongle, would that fix this?
FYI, I have a joying headunit and I have been using the Torque app w/ a Bluetooth ODBII adapter and received calls while both are connected. But yes the Bluetooth profiles that come with these units are very limited and basic.

What is your process in getting them to work together?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I remembered that I had another BT OBD2 adapter. I was using this one and couldn't get it to work, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011NSX27A/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_F0mqxbPZDQSQ5
I then pulled out my old one, (not this exact one, but looks identical) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EQ57BE8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_b8mqxbA6SEVRV and now they both are working together.

Is it possible to get DashCommand working on these units? I like it better than torque.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Sure no problem, and what I did is just buy a self powered USB hub and stick an additional Bluetooth dongle in there (android compatible, costs about $4) and pair with both.
Never had a problem with any of them
Hello,
The BT module in these devices are not an internal device, rather an external BT chip. There is no direct data line between device and BT chip. Basically they send commands and share metadata over serial port. Thats all about so dont consider it is a native bluetooth device.
