hi there!
im using a hero with mc 2.3 and FU_6.35.07.08 radiofirmware.
everytime I'm talking to someone, he keeps telling me to speak louder.
no matter how good the signal strenth is or to whom i speak!
I've already tried several radios, just in hope to be able to handle it.
the only solution is to hold the microphone straight to my mouth (its on the downside)
but thats still not the all in all solution..
is there anything like a microphone boost?
or at least can anybody tell me its just a bug or something?
i just hope its not due to the construction.
did u used the Volume Boost app from the market ?(forgot the name....removed asap...)
I used this is had that problem...
and backup didn't help..
ended up had to wipe and re-flash...
dammit... yes.. i did..
thank you for your help!
ill try it out.
Happened to me to.
What did you have to reflash to fix this ?
I will try to get a modified csv file for all hero roms to increase volume on headset, speaker, and for incall volume!

Thanks Drizzy!
This will be much appreciated!!
When I hold my Hero in my left hand up to the ear my little finger (pinky) always cover the little microphone hole so the sound can't reach the microphone. Those who I speak with tells me to speak louder because of this.
Otherwise I get good reports of the clarity of how I sound
Actually, after the latest official ROM upgrade, people have been telling me to speak up, that they can't hear me properly or that it sounds like I have a sweater over the mic or that I'm in a tin can.
I was about to send it in, perhaps I've dropped it or something. But it apparently not just me who has this problem,
Yeh Im also having the same problem. I have the MC 2.3 ROM but did use the volume hack program also. Do you think this has something to do with it?? Does anyone know of any way to increase the volume of the phone without screwing up the microphone?
hi guys, im having this problem too but only since like yesterday i think! im sure its something to do with the modaco rom as if i go back to default everything seems fine.
Any ideas?
Confused
Hi,
Sorry about the maybe obvious quiestions but I am quite new to this!
I bought an apparently new unlocked HTC Hero from eBay recently (which I now realise might have been a big mistake!)
On "About Phone" section of the phone it says I have firmware version 1.5 and "Build Number": "MoDaCo Custom Rom 2.3 Core".
I am now realising that this phone is probably not as new as advertised and has not come with the original software.
Anyway everything else seems to work perfectly with this phone apart from the same microphone problems as other people have described, so I was hoping that someone could explain to me what has been done to the phone and any suggestions on how to fix it or return it to its default state!
Im sorry, for the simple questions but as I say I am new to Android and would like a phone that I can make phonecalls with!
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Solution
I think it can be solved by replacing the following files with the original ones:
/etc/AudioFilter.csv
/etc/AudioPara4.csv
/etc/AudioPreProcess.csv
Of course you have to be root to be able to replace these files...
Note: I have not tried the above yet, but these files contain low level audio settings, so there is a good chance changing it can help you.
Thanks for the response.
However being completely new to this I am still a bit unclear.
How do I access these files on my phone and where do I find the original ones?
I am pretty sure it has been rooted - although not sure how I check - it definately has a custom rom installed on it though
You can download for example the MoDaCo ROM: http://content.modaco.net/hero/2.3-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip
In this .zip file you will find the mentioned files in the /system/etc/ sub-directory.
Simply copy them to your MicroSDHC card, than in the phone use a file browser (like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530271 ) to copy them from the card to the phone's file system (into /etc/ ). After this you only need to reboot.
aaaah, i have this exact same problem!! I really hope it is the ROM & not the handset.
I recently rooted my wife's g2 and installed CM7.1-rc1 on it.
She quickly realized that the phone's sound didn't work unless she put it on speaker.. The guide I followed should have set s-off as well and when I start into hboot (or whatever the recovery mode is called) i do see a message at the top about s-off..
I've installed both the 7.1rc-1 and the latest nightly release and they both have this problem.
After doing this I've also installed the latest radio which appeared to install just fine.. I downloaded the latest radio from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
Version 12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03
In About phone->Baseband version it now lists 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M
I wasn't able to find much else in the forums about this problem except for an incredible s and a wilfire.. It may be related to S-Off but i'm not sure exactly what to check. There are so many guides on how to root I just picked one that seemed easy, I can't even remember which one it was.. I obviously have root access just fine since I am able to install roms with no problems, I just can't get in call sound to work without turning on the speaker phone..
Note that the sound worked fine before rooting but I am not sure it worked with the stock version rooted since I only had that on here for a few hours and didn't make any calls.. Perhaps I should go back to stock and see if it even works there... Any suggestions before I do that?
Also, the original guide I used was basically the same as the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik..._Vision#VERIFY_.28using_.22gfree_verify.22.29
Reading through that tutorial I found how to verify s-off, superCID and sim lock off.. according to the output all of those things are correct:
Code:
# ./gfree_verify
gfree verify_cid returned:
@CID: 11111111
OK
gfree verify_secu_flag returned:
@secu_flag: 0
OK
gfree verify_simlock returned:
@SIMLOCK= 00
OK
# start ril-daemon
#
Edit -- Since i posted this I have reverted back to the original sense 2.2 rom (the one that came with the phone) and I still have this problem.. This is the rooted version, I have not de-rooted/s-on'd the phone yet.
Just to clarify, only the incoming volume doesn't work and only if speakerphone is off.. I've played with all the different volumes on the phone with no luck.. The mic works fine as the other person can hear me whether speakerphone is on or not.
Adding screenshots of the boot screen if that helps.
Just a status update..
I have since unrooted s-on'd the phone putting it back to the factory settings and i still have this problem.. Ironic that this could be a hardware problem when it happened literally right after the whole root process and what not.. At least it should still be under warranty so I'll be calling htc either tomorrow or monday if they aren't available by phone on weekends.
My wife is still going to blame me for this but I'm not sure what else I can possibly do.. Perhaps the customer service person will have an idea what can be causing this.. I have played around with headphones and car mode. With headphones on I get sound from the headphones just fine.. If i turn on speakerphone while i have headphones plugged in the sound does not come out the speaker on the phone (just my headphones) which means it doesn't appear that my phone thinks there are always headphones plugged in -- otherwise speakerphone wouldn't turn on.
My only other option to returning it is just tell my wife to always use speakerphone, which she won't like for sure.

got same problem on my HTC HD2... warranty is over I think.. more than 1year.. guess i will need pay for it to repair. =/
this might help
Hey I'm not sure if you've fixed your problem yet but I had kind of the same problem with my rooted HTC g2.....I tried everything to fix it and then finally I remembered that I had froze the "car home" app using my backup pro. I felt like the biggest jackass in the world but after I unfroze it all my sound was back to normal. Hope this helps you out but either way everybody can get a laugh thanks to my stupidity :-D
The fact that your headphones work and your small speaker does not suggests that this is a hardware issue. I would look up the hardware guide for this phone and see where you can find a new speaker, it may just be as simple as that!
I dont think it's a hardware problem, or it's just a super coincidence but after rooting my desire z with 2.3.3 android to CM7 2.3.7 i'm also unable to VOL UP or VOL DOWN during the call !
Also would appreciate if someone helps.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the ROM? Not wiping when moving between ROMs can cause a lot of random bugs.
yeah, i did!
although i used Clockwork
Now i've been reading that there are better recoveries for whipping stuff..
I use same Radio 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M. And i am able to install all roms without issues. BUT! Yesterday i updated to latest US MIUI and i lost sound in phone speaker and MIC. After plugging in headphones i was able to hear from headphones, and use internal phone mic. Try to flash some clean rom like virtuous g-lite or sense 2.0.0. Or if u want to use CM, try to flash other kernel.
There is an issue with a lot of Android devices where the OS thinks the headphone is being plugged in and unplugged on its own.
I have rooted 4.0.4 AOKP and it still occured.

Tried the app and I still can't hear the person on the other side. I really wished it worked. Or maybe im using it wrong or something..
Hi everybody, for about a week I experience the following annoying problem. When I call someone or receive a call I don't hear the person on the other side of the line through the normal speaker. When I switch to loudspeaker I can hear them loud and clear. The strange thing is that it does not always happen. It is definately not a hardware problem, the speaker sometimes works fine. When I can't hear the person on the other side pressing the volume-up button several times sometimes solves the problem and suddenly the audio works...
I noticed the problem earlier this week after I flashed CM 7.1 again. Before I had an Andromous rom with ICS installed, but I didn't like that one so I flashed my good ol' CM 7.1 again. When I noticed the problem I upgraded to CM 7.2 (with full-wipe) and also flashed another radio. Unfortunately all these things did not work...
Does someone have any idea how I can fix this annoying problem?
Right now the call function of my phone is pretty useless
Ps. the person on the other side of the line can always hear me.
full wipe, multiple rom flashes, even with it being intermidete it sounds like hardware, slight chance the flex is going bad, more likely the speaker needs to be replace or at least fiddled with. any recent drops?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
It is certainly not a hardware issue. When I install Skype and dial the Echo / Sound Test Service I can hear the everything just fine through the earpiece.
then you aren't wiping properly, fastboot -w or superwipe or both. the stock dialer doesn't have sound issues that I'm aware of and there must be curroption somewhere. change the radio will not change this, flash a vinilla rom after a full wipe and see what happens, don't restore anything

Still having this problem...Back on CM 9 (RC2) after wiping everything and again flashing a new radio. Matched RIL and everything. Nothing seems to work. Microscope is still working sometimes, but most of the times it doesn't. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
I'm really annoyed by the fact that I miss calls because the ringer volume was too low. But I have tried everything, and I mean everything, to try to correct that. You name the ringer volume locking app, I no doubt tried it. Tasker, etc. as well. None of them work at either locking the ringer volume at 100%, or raising it to 100% when a call comes in.
Since other people don't seem to have this problem.... I'm wonder, is it possible that the Manu kernel I install could be blocking something? Or what about the MIUI XJ ROM I got from here? Any other clues?!
When you're playing a music file without headphone, is the speaker giving loud sound then?
If yes, then your speaker is allright.
If no, plug in headphones and check the volume through your headphone. If the volume is also low there, then your amplifier is broken.

I use Volume Control app. But then again you said you tried every volume app there is.
Manu is not blocking anything as I've been with ManU kernel for a long while.
Try to change your ringtone. Some ringtones are louder than others.
Well, the problem has nothing to do with the choice of ringtone I'm using. If the volume is too low, I'm obviously not going to hear the phone, regardless of the volume of the ringtone.
TheRamon: I think you may have misunderstood the issue. It's not that the volume is low all the time. It's that it may have been turned down or off for various reasons, and I need the ringer vol to be 100% when a call comes in.
There are many apps that will do this, but absolutely none have worked properly on my Desire. So if we've ruled out the kernel, and others with Desires have managed to accomplish this through apps.... why am I not able to do the same?!
There is no particular indication anywhere that the phone is not working properly.

No, I haven't. But that's because it's a big deal (for me, anyway) to do that. I have to go through hours and hours settings things back up similar to what I had. So I don't change ROMs too often. Truth be told, I never really had luck with any ringer volume lock app on the Desire, and that's 2 years looking. They all mess up in one way or another, making them unuseable. It's just that it seems to be even more the case since I installed MIUI XJ with the Manu kernel. But I don't know. There may be no connection. All I know is that other Desire users have no (or little) problems with the ringer lock apps and I do!

Im not really asking you to switch rom. What im saying is nandbackup your current rom and flash a different one. Check if the volume issues disappear or not. Since you are using an AOSP based rom, my suggestion is to flash a Sense based rom and see if the issue remains. At least you'll have an idea if its just a rom related issue or not and determine the next troubleshooting step from there. It will be difficult to find a solution if you don't try to isolate where the problem is coming from.
via xda app
Ok, I actually did switch ROMS.... I'm on the latest stock MIUI GB ROM for the Desire, after wiping everything, and all stock apps. I just downloaded and tried a couple of locking apps; Ring Lock, Smart Volume.... they don't work! Smart Volume buzzes when I change the volume, but it happily allows me to do so!
So now I'm wondering if its MIUI itself that is preventing volume locking. Yet I doubt it, because I think we'd have heard that from MIUI users. Each volume control app seems to have its own reason for not working. Some will lock volume settings with each other, but still allow you to change the ringer volume. Some will have dialog boxes go into an infinite loop if you try to change the ringer volume. Some will vibrate a notification when you change the ringer vol., but will still allow you to do so. Even in Tasker, I set a profile to change the brightness and the volume upon ring... it changes the brightness, but not the volume. Since each app has a different type of failure, one would logically conclude that it's the apps that are simply faulty.
But then there's the irrefutable fact that while some find these apps faulty (sometimes for the same reason I did), I'm guessing not everyone with a Desire has been unable to get the ringer volume to stay locked. So I still don't know if it's an inherent problem with the Desire. But if it's due to MIUI, I'll have to live with it. Because... I like MIUI a bit more than I hate the fact that I can't control the ringer volume!
Update: I just discovered this, so I've yet to confirm.... but I just tried an escalating ring app.... and it actually worked on my Desire. I left the phone on low, the app started low and took the volume to max. That means, the volume is/may be controllable on this device, by a 3rd party. Just before this, I started messing about in Superuser, looking at the tons of logs it creates. Turns out, by default, Superuser was not giving full permissions to my apps - specifically the right to make calls and related etc. I set all such.apps to full permissions.
I will try with a ring locker app tomorrow (but even the escalating ring app is actually perfect for my needs!)..
-The story -
So I bought my mi mix 2 off swappa used and it was pretty much mint condition. When I received it it was on latest miui 11 global locked bootloader no root.. All worked fine for about three weeks. I ended up buying windows 10, again, which made me throw up a lil in my mouth. I did this so that I could use the mi unlock tool to unlock my bootloader. The java Linux tool no longer works to unlock if you use Linux so rn kinda forced to buy Windows. So I unlocked bootloader and then installed twrp and made a backup like I do with every phone since Android began. I then flashed HAVOC 3.1 using latest twrp recovery. I quickly realized my speaker decided to stop working in the earpiece soon after that. I ran some tests using apps and the earpiece speaker works, but NOT in a call. :crying:
-The problem I'm having in detail-
When I make a call to anyone they can hear me but I can hear NOTHING at all. Not low volume, but no sound whatsoever. If I switch to speaker phone however I can hear them and they can hear me fine. The top speaker that doesn't work during calls works when I tested it but refuses to work while on any call.
So naturally I Google searched the world for a few days hoping to find a fix. Then I thought maybe it was my recovery, maybe it was firmware I used, maybe it's a rom bug...etc...etc... I never proved it to be any of the things I thought it could be. I've installed other roms and I get the same thing with them. I've tried other firmware and same deal. I've disabled encryption, used magisk and not used magisk... Anyway, you get the picture.
Would anyone happen to know something I can do to fix this? I read some people touch up where top speaker is during a call ..That didn't work. ? I did 29 reboots and that did nothing. I checked the ear piece and cleaned what I could and that did nothing. I've wiped several different ways and used orange fox recovery and twrp different versions of both and that did nothing.
Please someone who's smart chime in and tell me I'm dumb and all I have to do is xyz and I can hear again from the earpiece on calls. Can it be a defective speaker? If so why does the speaker work fine on anything but NOT when making a call? Can it still be a defective speaker?
I did read TONS of reports of sound issues on Xiaomi devices across the board. That didn't make me smile much.. Anyway any advice or thoughts or anything would sure be extremely helpful and I'd forever be grateful. I hope you all have a good day and your speaker never acts stupid like mine is on my phone.

Try the latest version of Havoc 3.0, not 3.1. my device also has an unspeakable error on the call of messenger with most of the android 10 rom, i can hear the voice of the other side, but they can't hear me, after trying a lot of android 10 rom, i found only havoc os 3.0 is not making that error. Though it's not your fault, I think you should try it.

Mine is I can't hear them but they can bear me. What the hell is going on. Hahaha! If all else fails I'm going to get a new top receiver speaker put in at a shop close by. It does appear that many Xiaomi devices have had sound issues and have had speakers replaced. If you search on YouTube Xiaomi no sound on call or speaker replacement you'll see MANY videos on "how to." Quite a few videos specifically for mi mix 2. They should let us upgrade at least to the mix 2s for free.
I'll try 3.0 havoc but I've flashed around on Android 10 and 9 and problem hasn't gone away. Still zero sound on my end on calls but all speakers work doing anything else. Appreciate the recommendation. Thanks for commenting. Later today's ill flash 3.0 and see what's up. Then I may pull a few kernels from other roms and switch em out with whatever I'm on and see if I can't get something going that way.
I will also post a log of me on the phone talking and maybe someone can see something that's wrong... Hope so anyway..

I never thought that my sound issue was related to havoc in any way I am almost positive its a broken speaker. Looks as though that type of thing happens often on this device and other xiaomi devices. Google search receiver speaker replacement really fast and watch how many things show up about it. Its all over. I'm going to get a replacement. Using my moto g7 power rn as my main phone so I can have conversations and hear on my end. I always clean flash everything I flash. I never fail to wipe data, system, cache, delik cache on any install.
I have the same problem after installing Havoc 3.1. I tried updating the firmware...and rolling back the firmware to 9.5.16 to no avail

This is just too strange. So maybe my issue does have something to do with installing Havoc 3.1. That was the first rom I flashed after I unlocked my bootloader and speaker worked fine on latest MIUI Global rom before... I wonder if it's possible to break a speaker due to a rom installation? I've never heard of that before. I thought surely it was just the rom and was a bug or a firmware problem. I flashed all kinda firmwares afterwards in latest twrp and also sideloaded a few to see if maybe something wasn't right with recovery and like you say it did not change anything at all. I still get zero sound on my receiver speaker while on a call.
I'm going to try a few more things and see if it does anything. If I find a fix or something that allows me to hear anything at all out of my end on receiver speaker I'll most definitely add it here in a post and to the op. Seems like there would be more people than us if it had something to do with Havoc... Idk. Appreciate your information. I hope we can get this fixed soon. I never even hardly used my phone when the speaker worked. ? I bought it used off swappa and about two weeks later unlocked and flashed Havoc and no sound during calls on my end.
Did you flash magisk also? Maybe that caused the problem...
I'm using Google phone but have also tried the stock Android phone as well as a couple of different versions of firmware. If no solution emerges I'm going to disassemble the phone and see if the earpiece has lost connection

I used an app off Google play store to test speakers and my receiver speaker works but refuses to work during a call on my end. It did have sound come through loud and clear when I ran the tests I did when it first happened. I've flashed using magisk stable, canary, formatted data, used different firmwares, everything know to mankind and searched around and tried several things online and nothing. I've been trying to boot the Android 10 GSIs to see if that makes any difference but have had no luck using the same vendor and boot everyone used on pie GSIs so I snatched some from different roms and still no luck on GSIs that are Android 10. Lemme find link to test all i used and I'll return and post a link. Brb

You should add your findings to the havoc thread...if there are 2 people with the exact same problem maybe the developers will take notice and investigate

I doubt it and I did make a post there a while back about it. There are many others there ok that thread who reported sound issues and I wanted to confirm what for sure caused it before I put the blame all on a rom... The speakers on this device have had issues MANY times based on all the reports i read all over the internet. But if I can confirm exactly what it is I'll dang sure be very open about it online and let the world know in hopes that if it was something I did maybe someone else won't and I can somehow prevent it. But I did make a post there when it occurred. Search my username on the thread and you'll see it.
When you set a ringtone does sound come from your top speaker? On my device it does. Just curious. See if you can hear any sound selecting different ringtones. ?

I did find some info about pixel users who had this problem, in that case the problem was caused by file association issues with the phone app and Google play services. Some people were able to fix by removing the permissions of Google play services. I tried this approach but many of the permissions cannot be disabled

I'm going to clean flash now after I do a backup and I'll install havoc and NanoDroid which eliminates Googles hold on all our devices. Once I get all setup I'll run some tests and see if maybe this solves it.
NanoDroid: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3584928
[MODULE/SYSTEM] NanoDroid 22.5.1.20200102 (microG, pseudo-debloat, F-Droid + apps)
No difference

On my other device , Moto G7 Power see the 8th post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g7-power/development/rom-havoc-os-3-2-t4058987
This time I haven't had it occur on G7 Power but when I saw that guys post I had a flash back. :/
I suspect FW issue. Started not using top speaker after SW update. 10.0.6 When I receive a call and press the volume button, the 'earpiece' icon bar appear. I suspect the phone switch the sound to the 'earpiece' even if there is no earpiece. I even switched Bluetooth off, and still happens. The phone thinks there is a earpiece/headset connected even if there is none. I think Xiaomi Mi devs should post a solution or update. The issue is wide spread.
[edit 17Jul20]
OK, it happened again today. No sound from top speaker when making or receiving calls. Had to switch to speaker phone. Then I cleared the 'Contact and dialer' app cache memory. (And for good measure the other caller and dailer apps also. TOP SPEAKER CAME ALIVE AGAIN!! So I am pretty sure its a bug/memory issue.
What I did: Long press the dailer icon - tap on App info - press 'Clear data' icon and select to clear chache memory.

What's crazy is this happened on my device just after I wiped data, system cache and flashed HAVOC which was the first rom that I flashed when I got this device. And I flashed my firmware and it did nothing at all. I'm getting a another speaker from eBay this week. They're only like $3 US. Gonna replace it and see what happens. ?
