NFC tags - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Anyone know where to get a bunch of NFC tags for not much money?
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app

I ordered some NFC tags from the Sony Store online. For $20 you get four tags.

I got Samsung tec tiles from the att store. It was $15 and it came with 5.

I got the Sony Smart Tag 4 pack for $15 at Amazon. I am looking into the off-brand stickers that are cheaper than the Samsung ones, but I really like the Sony ones so far.

The whole NFC thing is cool but I'm having a hard time finding uses for them. I guess I'm so used to doing it my self. No pun intended.

I'm wondering if would be cool to just carry around one tag in my other pocket (I always keep my phone in my left pocket), and switch pockets to enable something like full volume or something.... I dont actually have an ion yet though... but looking forward to it.
Also, do you think when we get custom kernels running we could get NFC apps to change governors/IO schedulers etc..?

Hotel card keys. Waiting on my Ion (last three devices didn't have NFC), but I have a couple of the newer plastic hotel key cards I am going to repurpose for profiles.

Using NFC Task Launcher (Tagstand) app you can set one tag to switch between 2 settings. First tap sets it for car mode (eg GPS on, mobile data on), and 2nd tap sets it to home mode (wifi on). You can also set up a task to send a predefined sms "Hi Honey I'm leaving now".
=============
Currently using Xperia Ion - LTE ready ... just waiting for them to build the towers...

tagsfordroid.com, awesome stuff, 20 tags for 25.99 and comes with an extra keychain tag and some stickers, I use these with my gnex and when my ion gets here in a few days i will test em out but i dont see why they wouldn't work. way cheaper here and they are higher quality than those samsung ones, hard plastic outside and stick really well.

Did you get your tags, did they work.

i have two tags which come with the phone, i feel it is useless for me and from day 1 they are just stay inside my drawer.

I use mine to turn off wifi and turn on bluetooth when i am out of the house. They are only as useful as one makes them be.

What is the NFC for ???

I see we have the option to turn it on and off under the wireless settings..
But if google wallet doesn't work, what in the world is it for and should I keep it unchecked?
THANKS
beeming
i know your supposed to be able to use it for beeming i personally have not tried it and dont know if its even possible with any phone other then the nexus but you can read nfc tags if you ever see one lol although again ive never even seen one so i would say turn it off and save the battery life
NFC stands for near field chip basically. It is a weak radio transponder tag (sticker even) that when it senses a "ping" from another transponder it sends back info it is programmed with (many different things but usually basic identification or code based stuff).
Imagine you enter your car and swipe your phone pass an NFC tagged sticker on your dash and now the phone turns on Bluetooth and car mode and turns on Pandora because you programmed the response to that particular tag (or it could send say a URL for an advertisement for that food you are smelling as you pass a cafe giving that items info and a menu even)
It is big in Asia well known in Europe and now hitting the United States
If you have no need for it save the battery and the possible hacking door (rare but possible if sitting near you at lunch for an hour)

A lot of people have tested, and it uses essentially 0 battery, no one has managed to notice a difference with it on or off.
I use it with a program called NFC Task Launcher. I bought some NFC tags from Tagstand.com and then whenever I tap it on my nightstand, it opens up my clock, mutes my notifications, and lowers my call volume. Then when I tap it again int he morning, it quits the clock, and turns my notification and call volume back up.

I don't get it. If you don't want/use NFC, you can always switch the battery out.
It's not t-mobile's fault that it isn't a widely adopted technology yet. Who knows in a year from now when we're deeper into contracts. If anything you can blame samsung for including it instead of producing a batter that is like 1 dollar cheaper.
Personally, I rather have it than not. Mostly a gimmick in the states sadly.
OMG I'm so glad I read this topic. I only knew like half of what NFC is, this is amazing!
I use it for fun
I live on GA and at my local library they have white stickers on the back which are NFC Chips. I use nfc launcher and format the chips and rewrite them (ex: F you) I haven't seen what happens if the library scans them and sees what it says but that would be funny. They use them for security and what not. You guys should get nfc launcher pro version to share contacts, text, urls, and soon files. All you do is turn on NFC on both devices and one person uses nfc launcher to send a item. The phones must be touching back to back ( ex: 69 but reversed --- 96 hahaha) a notification will appear and thats it. NFC might me the new Bluetooth.
pm me back I you have questions on using it

NFC question

When using NFC tag I understand that when u place or hover over it some action takes place. Can u set it up that when the communication is lost ie u take the device away from the tag it does something. What I'm looking to have is when I place my phone on the tag in my car the setting for display changes to full brightness but when I take it of it goes back to auto.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Negative. You need another tag, maybe in a conspicuous spot on your door to swipe past on your way out the car to set it back to auto.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Nfc task launcher allows you to program two separate tasks per tag. In your case, swipe once for full brightness, swipe again to toggle.
Does it matter which tag I get other than size and water proof etc in other words can certain tag do more than other.

Look at tagsfordroid.com 10 of them plus a key fob for $16 with super fast shipping
does having NFC on use extra battery or does it hardly make an impact on battery performance?

SONY's Smart watch review with Xperia Ion.

so i decided y not buy the smart watch since i already have the headset pro to see how this comes in handy.
So first of the smart watch and head set pro do the same sh*t, only difference besides there looks is the watch has more apps.
Now even thou they do mostly the same thing. The watch does work good in most part's. Easily with phone outta sight ,you can check your message ,fb,tw,Google ect and even check weather and answer calls. Control music and volume. I find all of this to work out pretty well when all 3 devices are snyc, phone, watch, headset.
The bad and good.
The watch when not in use goes into sleep mode ,so in order to see the time you gotta double tab screen. But you can switch options to different watch looks to keep the screen on according to movement . Thats kool and all but can kill battery life quick. I have no problem tapping lol.
one Down Fall i notice .
Even thou i can read txt message, set up a reply option or call, i wish i can actually type and reply from the damn watch itself
Good example, Google maps for the watch is one of the best application on here, keyboard pops up, easy to use. Type in any location from the watch easy have a gps on my hand only if it talked. So they could have easily done this for texting.
Using all 3 device in public like on bus or at work, works out very well for me. Only time you gotta pull ur phone is when its time to reply to a text and its so anyyoing knowing this watch can do so much more.
Well am not done with this review ill be back with more so i hope this helps out anyone even if your not interested. It's always good to have information Laying around in case lol.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, LET ME KNOW.

Ditto. Not because of quality, but function versus dollars. However I know there's 3rd party mods/apps for the watch, I'd like to hear more on those in execution.
Maybe Spectre can chime in too with his review.

I really like the smart watch. I've used it numerous times to change ring volume to vibrate or silent, view text and emails without pulling my phone out. Its nice to be able to see whether an email it txt is important and needs a reply right away or not without getting your phone out.
Honestly you don't really think you would use it that much until you actually have it. My biggest complaint is that the watch screen isn't bright enough when in direct sunlight.
The google maps app is awesome. I haven't used a lot of the other third party apps.
I don't have a problem with how the phone functions as far as having to double tap the screen or push the side button to turn the screen on. Swiping is easy. The apps could use some more function like replies and stuff but honestly that's not really the idea behind it. Its quick access to view emails, txt, Facebook, twitter and other things without having to use the phone in hand and it does that real well.

I have one, and I find it to be very useful. My watch was a present. I thought it was going to be a useless gimmick, but now I can barely live without it.
On the way to work (on the bus), I usually have music playing. I can leave my phone in my pocket, and switch tracks easily. At home I often connect my phone to a dock for playing music. Again, I use my watch as a remote.
I prefer to have my phone on silent/vibrate, but I have missed calls because I do not always notice the vibration. With my watch, the watch vibrates on a call! I never miss calls now.
Having email alerts and SMS alerts is pretty handy. I have wired up my home alarm system to my home network - it sends emails when my alarm goes off. These come straight through to my watch now.
The screen is very good indoors. Outside, it is pretty hard to read in direct sunlight, and not great (but usable) in shade.
The UI is pretty poorly thought out. A back button would make life much easier. To go "back" on the watch, you need to do a pinch gesture. This is pretty hard on a tiny screen. A hardware back button could easily be located on the left side of the watch.
One puzzling thing is that the API does not allow 3rd party developers to add new watch faces. I would have thought this would be a big selling point. Writing a watch face as a complete 3rd party app does not work as well, as it tends to chew more battery and doesn't integrate with the other apps properly.
The connection to the charger is stupid, whoever thought of it should be ashamed. It is very finicky. I've found the best way to deal with it, is to wrap a rubber band around the watch and cable - otherwise it may stop charging (it sucks to have it go flat 30 minutes after getting to work).
The bluetooth connection uses v2, not v3 - so it uses more battery than it needs to. Having the watch at a distance from the phone will cause it to go through batteries a lot faster.
The watch itself is relatively tough, but the clip is not. I actually broke one of the little clips that hold the watch to the watch strap. Luckily for me, the guys at Sony Central in Brisbane had a watch that had a broken screen - so they helped me to transfer the clip from that watch onto mine (the alternative was to wait for 4 weeks for a warranty repair).
On the whole, I like the watch! It's not perfect, but it is very usable.
The good
Music control
Alerts
Vibrate on call
The bad
Clip is fragile
Charging connection sucks
Cannot add 3rd party watch faces
Screen sucks in sunlight

NFC Garage Door Opener

So I was looking at this BTMate app and module (Formerly GarageMate?) and was wondering if there's a way to make this app activate the door opener with an NFC Tag. I'd post the link to BTMate stuff but the forum won't let me post links yet. You can find it by looking on YouTube or going to the btmate site.
Heres the scenario. I ride a motorcycle, and it would be nice to be able to open the garage so I can pull the bike in without getting off the bike or having to dig around for the clicker (I've already lost one of the dang things.)
I was thinking it would be very handy to be able to sew an NFC tag in to my glove, touch my glove to the pocket I keep my phone (SGS3) in when I pull up to the garage, and the door would open for me. Not sure if there's an app that could possibly make the btmate app OPEN the door from NFC launch as opposed to launching the btmate app and me having to push the button in the app to open it. Maybe hack the app to activate rather than simply running the UI when launched? Or maybe something like tasker? I'm pretty inexperienced with this stuff so I was hoping you guys might have some ideas/insight. If anyone knows of a better app that could do this already please let me know.
Moreover though I just thought I'd share the idea.

Not a bad idea you should try n post here in this thread custom nfc tag ideas . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1665561
Check the raspberry pi forums. Someone finished a project and posted the code to use siri voice commands on his phone to open his garage. Then someone adapted for android, although adding nfc into the mix would be pretty easy with the nfc breakout board. Either way your gonna have to use some form of controller to do the actual opening of the garage.

Using a blutooth headset mod wired in to the garage door opener with the btmate app, easy to make yourself for about 10-20$ depending on what you can find the headset for (although I don't really see why you couldn't use ANY bluetooth headset for it) All you need really aside from the headset is a cheap 1$ part from radio shack. If you google around you can find the how to video easy enough but I can't link it due to my lack of posts.
My objective is to get the app to open the door by nfc activation instead of me having to pull out the phone and push the "button" on the screen to do it.
Here is the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cAtso2tzMo
The only problem you will have is that NFC is not active while the phone is asleep or on the lockscreen. You can find mods to make the nfc always on though it is slightly more of a security risk.
Good luck
Would be a very nice app for my phone... now to change my Garage door from manually to automatic

I feel like what you are trying to do is very obtainable. With the NFC app in the thread, I believe (don't hold me to this), you can sew your tag into your glove and then swipe the phone. Then let the app do the rest. I'm going to order the earpiece and transistor to make my opener work as mentioned on the BTmate site. Then I'm going to try the NFC tag idea. It may take a lil while because I found the Samsung piece from Amazon for under 15 bucks. Other than shipping time, it won't take me long to put it all together. I'm pretty interested in seeing if it will work.

I agree. I think it's more of the cool factor of getting it to work for me. Not using the NFC is way more secure and using it takes away from having the tag.
You can also just buy a tiny key-fob size opener and leave it on the same key ring as your bike key, which is what I did.
Others have pulled the guts out of full size openers, hidden them under the tank or something and wired the opener button contacts to their high beam flash button. (The opener wouldn't see the 12v from the bike at all; just whether the switch is open or closed.... bike could even be turned off)

Ye Raspberry pi will do the trick, could probably use arduino as well
I found a cool NFC system that could do the job as well - have a look at nfcporter.com
It seems that you can connect the reader to the garage doors and by tapping it with your phone it would open the door.

I've been trying to do this for the longest time. Someone made one that opens the garage door as soon as you pull into the driveway. It detects your Wi-Fi and uses that as a trigger. Everything is completely seamless and automatic. I contacted btmate and asked if they would add this feature, and they said yes, if more people asked for it, so you could try that.

Let's give it up for Intellicover!

This app is MY FAVORITE ANDROID APP EVER.
- Virtually zero battery drain
- I never ever EVER have to touch on/off button now
- Tons of customization settings
- FREE FREE FREE
- Works awesome whether i'm using my poetic cover, just putting the phone loose in my pocket..or even if its just sitting out on the desk and goes to sleep (just put your finger over the sensor briefly to 'wake' it)
- You can turn off the 'auto on/off' when in landscape mode which is great..i never accidently put the phone to sleep while showing someone a video
- Set it to work automatically after rebooting phone
- Set it to automatically release the lockscreen (if you dont have a passcode)
in short..this simple app has quickly surpassed everything else i installed because it so simple and elegant!
2 thumbs up! i'm planning to buy this guy a beer or whatever his little thing says.
Interesting idea for an app, but not for me. I like to keep my phone out on my desk during most of the day and I'm not a fan of having it face down especially since I don't use a case/bumper/screen protector.
you dont need to.
it will go to sleep like it normally does. it would only turn on if you put your finger over the sensor for a second.
give it a try..you'll fall in love w/ this app!
Yes!!
I just replaced the LG bumper case with a Nillkin flip cover last night and immediately started to hate having to press the power button to unlock it. Now I just have to open the flip cover for the screen to turn on. I've only been testing it for a few minutes but so far it's been perfect.
garenzy - I leave my phone on my desk with the flip cover open as well. As nyvram1 mentioned, you just need to wave your hand over the proximity sensor and the screen turns on. It's been flawless for me so far.
Loving this app! The verdict is still out on the battery drain but I'd be willing to take a small hit on that for this new feature.

i've had this installed for over a week and haven't noticed any additional battery drain.
read the developer's notes. he explains why the battery draw from using this is negligible at best.
i LOVE this app! seriously, after using my phone for a month without it, then installing it a week ago its like i have a new phone!
I dig it, I have my bumper so putting it face down at my desk isn't an issue and it's nice not having to feel for the power button.
doesnt matter if you put it face down or face up on the desk. it will obey the normal timeout sleep if face up and you just move your finger over the sensor to 'wake it' if you need to use it.
no downsides to this app yet.

Thanks man! I have the bumper and a leather magnetic clip for when I'm working. I thought the magnet would turn it off but it was poorly worded and the magnet clip was just too keep the clasp on.
So THIS is perfect thanks man!

Sounds like you made the app and trying to get it attention -_-

I haven`t installed it yet but how does this affect the lock/unlocking of screen when you put it in pockets or put it in your bag?
Installed, can't decide if I actually like it or not. Seems to flick on and off all the time despite messing with the settings. Works well when I put it in my pocket.

The lock screen always comes on after wake up. However this can be disabled in the app.

I was using smart screen on pro for the same. It used to work fine. Now installed this. In initial testing, it is working fine. Let's see how it fares. Thanks for the tip.

I would have to agree with "Meg" on this one.....I feel kinda dirty after reading the OP. It makes me feel like I just got back from a used car lot.

Guys a bit excited about an app he really likes. I love it because I have a leather case that opens like a book so this is pretty awesome.
Maybe I developed the app too

Tried it, it killed about 14% battery overnight while I slept :/ not good so uninstalled.
Fun gimmick app, I can see the usefullness when you're using a flip cover, however I don't so it's just a cool gimmick till sleep2wake becomes available for other kernels. That how i want to turn on my device

So 24hrs later it's getting uninstalled, everything seemed to be working fine but on calls/alarms/etc. it doesn't show the appropriate screen it instead shows the home screen (I did set it to go to the home screen but that was so it didn't stay stuck on the intellicover screen) so for now I'll just go back to tapping the power button
