Q: How to install Updates? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

My Wife's GS2 is rooted and she has been getting a Tmobile OTA recently (I assume this might be ICS). When she goes to install the update, it goes straight to CWM upon reboot. I did a quick glance at the first few pages in the boards for an answer but did not quite find what I was looking for or I may have overlooked it. Can someone point me in the right direction on how to get this update.
Would I need to unroot her phone? Or is there something I needed to do once it goes into CWM recovery? Any help would be nice.
Thanks.

First, it's not ics it's the prequel for ics. Tmo is only releasing ics via Kies. Second, if she wants stock ics there's a couple ways to do it. First is dl the ota update then Kies ics. Second way is find the ics img and odin it to your phone (you'll have to find it...it's somewhere on the board). Or third, flash an ics modem, then flash a custom ics rom.
Or, your other option is keep the phone the way it is and turn off the update. Instructions are in this sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420065

If you upate over kies you will loose root priviledges, ill say just download any custom ICS with a ICS radio...

Wow. You must live under a rock...LOL. Or don't read threads before you post. Gingerbread man! Gingerbread! If you want it then you need to be completely stock. You could also flash a custom GB ROM.

If you were running syndicate and you let the ota update run, then you lost your root. Your running "stock" gingerbread now. No more clockwork mod. You have to re-root your phone by flashing the cwm 3.0.0.1 tar with the phone in download mode. Then flash a different kernel first. There's a couple on here to chose from and they are both wonderful. and then you can install an EI22 rom of your choice.

Oh I almost forgot to mention, you should move out from under that rock. It must be dark down there. Haha.

If you want the OTA then Odin back to complete stock from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Otherwise if you are on the EC05 modem you can update your modem from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339401
And then flash any EI22 ROM that strikes your fancy.

[Q] root on T989UVLDE firmware

I have a question about the new firmware that was released, the T989UVLDE baseband. It appears to be the prerequisite update to the actual ICS update, whenever that is going to be...
Anyways, as a result of this update root access is lost and all of the tmobile bloatware is back. Has anyone tried to re-root again using odin on this new firmware?
Really? Use the same method you used to root the first time

as they all have said.
I was on this new update but didnt see a point in it as of right now since ill wait the official ota ics to drop and become a flashable zip.
I was able to re-root it again using Odin. It wasn't that I didn't know how to do it, I just wanted to see if anyone else has done it just to know if it works out okay. And it turns out everything is okay. I'm paranoid...
Anyways thanks for your responses.

[Q] Help regarding official ICS update for T989

Ok so I'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.6. My phone is rooted. I AM NOT USING ANY SORT OF ROM. I am on the stock T-mobile rom.
The only programs I have installed on it are Titanium backup. I have performed a backup using nandroid as well as TB.
My question to you all is: Is it safe to update to the OFFICIAL ICS when T-Mo rolls out with it on June 11th?
If so, do I have to unroot? Or can I just run the update when I hook up my phone and open KIES?
Help!
If you're running the stock ROM, you should be able to update without issue. You will almost certainly lose root, though. I'm hoping it only takes a day or so for someone to bang out a rooted, deodexed, etc. stock ICS ROM once the update is released.

I hope so too man. At last, T-Mo rolls out the update.
When I plug into KIES, I have another random update but I'm not going to do install it until June 12th.

You may need to flash the stock recovery via odin if you have CWM installed to update to ics

Install that lastest update b4 u update to ics. The update b4 ics is to prevent your phone from bricking when going thru the update process to ics.

Ok but will I need to revert back to anything? Like i said in my original post, I havent loaded any custom ROMS. I've only rooted the phone via ODIN.
It is okay to be rooted, but what Mr Knitty is asking is are you on the UVLDE build of gingerbread or the KL1? You need to be on the newer, updated UVLDE.

what exactly happens when you lose root? is it JUST that apps like titaniumbackup won't function as they won't have root access?

I tried connecting my phone to Kies after rooting and it says that a firmware update isn't supported on my device. In order for me to do anything in that regard, I'd have to unroot and then upgrade. If I were you, I'd just wait until Tmo pushes out the ICS update and when someone puts the rooted version out just install it. It will save you the trouble of having to unroot and root again just to get what your phone is already capable of getting via root.
Is there a thread for upgrading from a modded rom, like Juggernaut? Searched, but then again my eyes aren't the greatest. If I need the UVLDE update, how would I go about not bricking during such process? Sorry to intrude, just thought this was the closest thread to ask.

Theres a thread dedicated specifically to flashing the update. That thread covers every possible scenario. Look for the words flash, UVLDE, how to, and update in the titile. Its plain as day.
I think I got answer on my question in here.....
I didn't have to change back to stock recovery to update or unroot.
If on stock just flash the root file again through Odin and your good to go.
If your on a custom GB ROM. Just flash through Odin instead of Kies. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682955
Tmobile T989UVLDE
If coming from a leaked custom ICS ROM. I would use the super wipe and cache wipe. Then flash through Odin.
Of course back up everything with your preferred method.

Wait, so this flashes updated stock, but updated? I would lose my current rom setup?
*EDIT*-Nevermind, found what I was looking for. Just going to go back to stock, and wait it out.

dont worry
My phone its rooted just stock just to be able to use good apps like titanium addfree etc etc and when i update laat week did not gave me a problem so im thinking if u have stock rom just rooted i dont see a problem plus everyone here at xda wont let u down...trust me
What I would do, is just wait like 2 or 3 more days so someone can come out with a completely stock ICS. That way you don't have to worry about losing root

Quick question about unrooting.

Hi,
I tried searching but couldn't find a definitive answers since there are so many topics. I have a T989.
Right now I'm rooted with CWM Recovery and STOCK version 2.3.6 of Android. Been that way for months. I think it's about time to upgrade to 4.0.4. Now my question is...do I have to put stock recovery back on the phone in order to update? Kies alerted me there's a firmware update.
If I do have to restore to stock recovery...what is the process of doing this?
If I don't have to restore to stock recovery...will anything happen if I upgrade to 4.0.4 while being rooted?
Do you recommend wiping the device before upgrading?
Thank you.
Why not just odin or flash a rooted 4.0.4?

It is not required to unroot to upgrade your software. If you want to utilize rooted stock you can upgrade it using the stock firmware and pushing it through odin. Kies is unstable and I've encountered many that kies causes more problems then assistance. In reality is up to you. My understanding is that you do need to be completely stock for kies to complete the update. I prefer odin (7mins compared to almost an hour with kies), and no you don't have to wipe to do it through odin, however is going to wipe it for you...with the exception on any media you have stored on internal.
I will warn you, stock ics is very very wonky and often lags something wicked. Just be prepared...

I don't want to upgrade really...but I'm having too many issues. My phone keeps rebooting itself or will freeze. My WiFi calling is acting up...telling me to update my 911 address when it is already there, and have already re-updated it. When making a phone call, or changing brightness using the widget, it will hang for like 30 seconds before the call goes through...etc.
I feel like the ICS update will resolve some of those issues.
Personally I would update via Kies to the newest official release (4.0.4 ICS I think) I also think if you update via Kies you will have to re-root the phone unless you don't want to do that and just run stock ICS. There usually is a BIG difference in positive directions when they release official firmware. What could it hurt? Having to re-root which only takes 5 minutes max?

It seems easier via odin, I just never have really messed with odin other than rooting.
Will updating to ICS fix the issues I'm having? lol
Yes in most cases. Gb on this device was terrible in my experience. Use odin...i flash back to stock ever more and then to tinker inside the device as i learn to mod roms. Fishing through odin is a breeze and takes up less system resources from your comp...and its FASTER! but that's just my opinion

[Q] [stock ICS, rooted] What do I need to do to get OTA updates?

I got and rooted my phone this Summer (using the method from this thread). Can someone help me understand what I need to do in order to install the Jellybean update from T-Mobile?
From what I've been able to gather, I need to go back to the original recovery mode rather than clockwork. Is that all I need to do? Is that as simple as finding a stock recovery file and flashing it back on with odin? Any pointers on that front would be helpful....
Really, I don't know what I'm doing. Any help would be appreciated. I just wanna try Jellybean and am sick of this "update me!" nag message....
Im sure theres an easier method than what I did. I basically reflashed my phone with the stock tmobile rom. Then I did the ota update to get jelly bean and rooted again. You can always just try to unroot your phone and apply the ota update after as well.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I've never had to do this, but couldn't you just retain custom recovery and just flash the ROM itself without doing the OTA update ?
Someone else or Google can confirm / deny.
