I have read conflicting arguments on the Google work around to apple's injuction will affect Google Now and future updates to JB. So my question is, will JB also, also receive the less functional google search or will Google Now not be affected?

If you update the official OTA, you'll get the watered down GN. If you stick with the leaked version, you'll get whatever it is we've been using.
Google has said that this will affect only the GNex, so if they release the source for JB, we may be able to use that and flash it to get an ASOP JB ROM that has the original GN
Isn't this just over the search function.
Just re-post my idea of my idea of the answer.

Don't know if anybody has noticed this in Google Now but if you where to search for an app lets say calculator you would get a return of this...

and then using the action bar you have to choose that you are searching for an app.
IMO this circumnavigation apples BS patent on universal search because you choose whether or not you want an app or a web search pic search etc. Apple could surely not argue with this in JB. The search engine is not searching multiple data bases, it is searching one database that you choose. Obviously it is much quicker if it knows but its only one more click.
If in the future if they allow you to open apps on command (I know you could but not sure now as Google Now is patchy in the UK atm) then that would not be searching multiple databases either as you are directing you phone to "open" an app.
If the judge doesn't see these work around to be sufficient then she is defiantly on the books and if I where in charge of Samsung/Google I would appeal for a different judge.

Google has said it does not affect Google Now. Of course only a judge can decide that. But from what we've seen most of Google Now is coming from the internet and not local sources so theoretically, it should be ok.
Thanks for all the input guys. Hate to see feature gimped because frivolous patents are granted.
I don't know where you're located, but what I understand from what the official Nexus channel posted on Google+ it's only for US Gnex

What I would like to know is how it is decided who gets the update. Will it be for those running takju/mysid devices only? Or will it be for anyone, even those running yakju, that Google decides are located within the USA?

Anyone has tried google earth on htc desire??
Its available for desire or not..
It is you can download it for free from the Market. It takes some memory though...
Try Google Sky Map its simply awesome for Desire - just point it up towards the sky and it tells you about all the stars, planets and constellations... simply great!
yes it does work, but as said, it does use some memory.
+1 for skymap though, awesome program!
Yeah it works fine, as does skymap as mentioned above
I can't find it in the market... i search for Google earth... and it comes up with google earth blog gps2google earth, etc... but not the real one... how do i find it?
this should do it....

Any chance of uploading the apk anywhere? Its not available on the market.

Found it on droid-life.com, bit odd that its still not in the market, maybe something to do with Google only signing off on the ROM recently but dont think so.
Here's the blog post and download links:

This thread confuses me,
Why not just use google maps and turn on the satellite view?
Fon22
the issue here is that apps that should be available aren't. and there is no explanation from google or htc. that is not good enough.
are there any sites that have all apps? if they are free apps then there will be no problem in downloading them. anyone put a link up?

Im happy that until they have undergone google testing so that they dont delete stuff I need on my phone, I cant use them.
Yes!
Would you rather that they hadn't sold you the phone, until you could download everything..?
If so, go get a refund and wait..
If not, be happy using the phone for what it does now (which is Shyte loads!)

You're completely missing the point. 'Test apps' are not missing from the phone. Protected apps are.
So; established programs such as Paypal, Google Earth, Rockon, etc... are all missing.
It's because of the Build Fingerprint in the build.prop file. Google haven't registered the build on their market system yet. Until that's done, we'll not see protected apps.
If we had root & write access, we could simply change the fingerprint.
In the last couple of days all my iPhone-toting friends have been showing off their Places app which logs their location to their Facebook profile, along with a map link. Apparently it never worked before, but now it does.
It's a total load of cr*p, but in the interests of showing them that Android can do anything the iPhone can (usually better), and also to shut them up, I'd like to know if there's some way I can have that functionality on my Desire. Just so I can do it the once and say "It's a waste of time which is why no-one on Android uses it"
Any ideas?
Android user can also use this feature if you go to the facebook mobile site with your browser. However I have no doubt this feature will pop up in the next facebook app update.

I think the places thing could be a security risk. Even if you don't put your location, a friend can tag you as being in a location. The only way out of this is through changing privacy settings to opt out.

Pretty sure its location specific. I was in the states a couple of weeks ago when they were trialling it there. Came back an it wasn't available in the UK until recently. Still in a testing phase I believe. Will no doubt have a bigger roll out with the next update to the Facebook app.
At present it's only available in the US and the UK, the rest of Europe will receive it soon.
As above it'll probably be in the next Facebook app update, whenever that comes along...

What is "sj" and why would i allow it to access my Google account? By now i just kept clicking "no thanks" but this request pops up in few minutes again. Is there any way disable it for good?
Go to Settings/Accounts
How many Google accounts are listed there and is SJ one of them?

As it's compiled and distribuited by google, there's no way to be 'anxious' granting permissions to music app. As far as i read from others, 'sj' stand for Steve Jobs (R.I.P.) and is a way to pay one last respect to the ex apple's ceo.....anyway, which is the real meaning i wouldn't be afraid of that!

As i just wrote above, i'm using AOKP which means it wasn't compiled by Google.
As for Steve Jobs... You're kidding me, right? IF by any chance it will turn out to be truth, i will print out AOKP's source code on the paper and burn it.

Now, the video says it's already on android, but I haven't noticed an update on the Play Store, nor does the app show itself at all on the Play Store. While I know Google Now is a Jelly Bean thing, I don't think the enhanced voice search is (since the iPhone is getting it) so does anyone have the updated app or does anyone know where to find it?
Only thing I saw is an iPhone wtf is Google doing are they dum!

yeah its called "Google Now" Clarks rom comes with it pre-installed... it only operates when u use google search(the app not the webpage)...... understands most of my commands better than S Voice
It comes with JB I think.
well here is the thing..
the you tube video has a link that takes you to the googles ''Introducing Voice Search'' http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/voicesearch/index-chrome.html
which in turn gives you a link to get the new app in the play store http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/voicesearch/index-chrome.html
if you look at when the app was last updated it says January 11 2012 so im not sure where Google is going with this.
maybe its a near future update but nothing has changed yet.

i have google now on the paranoid hybrid rom which btw is the greatest rom ever created (not joking at all) it does alot more then web searches .. sends texts make calls sets alarms .. traffic updates for your routes .. it does alot of stuff and does it way quicker then siri . on another note WTF IS WRONG WITH GOOGLE ?!?!?!? apple is suing android companies left and right and always puts contracts on theyre apps and cool options so nobody but iphones can have them and android keeps letting them use our stuff ... but i guess theyre not a multi billion dollar industry for nothing
here is your answer.
you are speaking about the update to google search itself. if you open the browser and go to google or use stock voice search and type or ask for weather it now shows you the weather in a google now like format. like the cards. hope this helps. you require no update to use these new functionalities. google just updated the way they display certain kinds of search results.

Isn't the while point if the forums to stop things like this? I sure as hell don't expect XDA DEVS to need to install this app on my own phone. I was under the assumption that developers could be trusted on here so why the need for this? Also a simple search on Google flags it as malware

I go that on a different site yesterday. Bad popup ad with no ability to click out of it. What happens when a site doesn't screen their advertisers, they get to look like idiots.
As a note, my bet is it's "Clean Master" as I'm seeing that same general popup without the virus warnings today.
I applied xda reconized contributer form last month . I got a reply including a link containing comments of my application reviewer . I just follow that link , but I get Notification from my antivirus about bug contents .

I always thought that those were fake. They trick you into thinking that you have a virus , then the app you install to remove the virus is the actual virus. I just click those off
