What is this "android_secure" folder? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While browsing through emmc, I see this hidden folder android_secure containing lots of apk's, total size appx 400 mb.
Is it OK to delete it?

Well I don't know exactly what the android_secure folder is for, perhaps some sort of backup system or something but I do know that Android automatically generates it whenever it tries to put something into it so if you do decide to delete it, it will come back. However, I don't recommend it because if it does contain information important for apps to run then deleting it obviously would cause them to stop working. Hope this helps

Those are apps. Probably because they are configured to install to SD by default. Keep in mind if you delete it you may delete apps you have installed if I understand this correctly. Sure the folder will be created but not the files in it. I'd say keep it.

What can I delete?

Right I have just been looking through the files on my SD card and noticed theres loads me files I have no idea what view are. My question is are all the important system files in the data folder? I'm on MIUI data2ext Rom so obviously its on my SD card. For example I i go into file manager and there is 3gb me stuff in the misc folder. I have no idea what all that is in there but it doesn't seem to be the data stuff.
Thanks
I'm not sure as to your system files as I've never used that rom. But I've read an been told that SD/lazylist folder can get quite big but is safe to delete as needed.

I am sure, nobody understands why you want to delete these files. Tell us.
Because I have 3gb of files that don't seem to be important. All I want to know is what files can't I delete in terms of the system files?

I'd be careful deleting data files directly. 3GB sounds like a hell of a lot, so I'd take a look through the application listing in Settings > Applications and see what's taking up so much space. Doesn't hurt to clean up here and there anyhow if you're careful

Delete unwanted files and folders under sdcard directory

hi, under my sdcard directory i can see 2 android folders. one is "Android" and the other is "android". is this a redundant folder? Should i delete one of them? Or are there really 2 "android" folders in jelly bean. And also can i safely delete hidden files left by uninstalled apps, those that starts with "." as in "sdcard/.doubletwist" . I have uninstalled doubletwist long ago and i just found this out lately. Is is safe to delete ./doubletwist then?
thanks

There are no apps on the "sdcard" on a gnex. I would delete the .doubletwist directory. I only have an Android folder but I would look at file modification dates in both folders to see if one wasn't being used. JM2C

File move error or bug?

I installed Slim rom and it moved all of my previous sdcard files to a different location. I tried to use ES File Explorer to move all the data (2.85gb) to the new sdcard location. Once the process completed there's a message saying low storage space when I should have 3.25gb avail.
*
I checked the location where it was supposed to move the previous sdcard files to the new location and instead it created many duplicates of the current roms sdcard location (inception style) and repeated until there was no space left.
*
I found the previous sdcard location under mnt/shell/emulated/. I selected to move the emulated folder. I don't know if this "emulated" is some sort of special android folder that I'm not supposed to mess with or not and maybe that caused this issue.
*
But then, when I went to the folder where the previous files were located and browsed it, all of the files are listed as having a file size of 0.00 and clicking on properties for any folder shows 0 folder size. So I can see the files there but its as if they have been overwritten or made inaccessible. So I'm a bit pissed at this point because I can't find where the files were moved to and the old files seem to have no file size. Yet, after deleting the repeated copied info it only freed up the 3.25gb of space. So it's as if my old files are still taking up space somewhere but I can't get to them or open them.
*
Next, I decided to move those old files again and this time I placed them on my extsdcard. When I moved the files again they were completely viewable and accessible, from the extsdcard, even though they can't be accessed at my old location. I also used multiple root browsers and none could access the old files at the old location.
*
Any ideas what could have gone wrong?

It appears you are running a recovery that is not supported by Android 4.2.
Since android 4.2 modified the directory layout to make way for multi user support, recoveries had to be updated to flash properly.
You will need to more than likely move your data files to your computer by hand, delete all of the extra and then reimplement your data to the appropriate folder.
Make sure you update your recovery as well so you don't see this on future 4.2 flashes.
When 4.2 first released this was a common issue with recoveries. Once you get your data and apps backed up appropriately, you may need to wipe your data/internal storage to free up the "used" space. I put used in quotes because it may appear its not taking any space at all when in all actuality it is.

I'm using the latest TWRP 2.3.3.1 I think is the version. Is that not a compatible recovery?

Hmm... latest is 2.4.1.0 but 2.3.3.1 was definitely compatible... sounds like there's a different underlying issue out of my realm of expertise. We'll have to wait for someone else to come along. Sorry man =/

I'll update my recovery anyways. I've fixed the problem by moving everything again but in smaller sections. I may take up your advice to connect to a pc and back up everything, format it, then move the files back though. I just don't want to duplicate the issue again. It was a huge inconvenience. Thanks for posting.

Very little free space

I did a few backups in twrp. Not sure if that's what is causing it. There are a lot of large data files in the miscellaneous tab. Four data.ext4.win and four system.ext4.win. What are these files for? Can I delete any of them?
Sent from my PACMAN'D Note II
Those are your backups. They use space on the phone's storage. Connect it to a PC and transfer the files off.
What's the best way to delete twrp backups? It seems like they get saved to 2 spots: \storage\emulated\0\twrp\backup and sdcard/TWRP. Then inside emulated is a copy of sdcard as sdcard0. Where is this emulated thing coming from? I think it's AirDroid. I tried uninstalling AirDroid, and deleting that while tree but I get an error in both root browser apps I use.

Not airdroid...
It's a legacy folder that is added when using CM builds. ..
Do a general search on the subject. ..and you'll find the full explanation for the "O" folder. ..g

[Q] Recovering 'hidden' photos after wipe

Hey XDA!
I have a quick question about recovering a 'hidden' folder that I can't find.
I recently just wiped my device and installed a new ROM with Philz Touch Recovery.
I looked through my photos and I can't find a special folder I had 'hidden.'
There's no option to 'show hidden content'
Is there any other place I can look? I backed up that particular DCIM folder from internal memory to my computer.
Then after I couldn't find the hidden folder in phone, I replaced the old DCIM folder to my phone's memory.. STILL can't find it.
Any help is appreciate at this point..
Thanks again!
Root explorer will show hidden files

Files made hidden by the stock gallery app will still stay in the DCIM folder, right?

I'm not 100 percent sure, but i think so. I don't use the stock gallery so i am not sure. But usually natural linux hidden attributes is simply adding a period to the beginning of the file or folder.

Omg I found it lol, so basically I made a random folder then hid it. Plugged it into my computer to find the folder name.
Of course with the option to view hidden files and folders.
Saw the folder I was looking for and opened file location. It's stored in:
Phone > Internal Storage > .hide > folder name
Thanks for your help, though.
