RUU Error 140: Bootloader version error - HTC One X

I had ota 1.26.401.2 on my phone prior to my phone messing up and then not recovering. Ran two different RUUs, one that was a downgrade image and the other was the same image that was on my phone (1.26.401.2). Both failed with an error 140: bootloader version error. Then I downloaded and ran a newer image through RUU (1.28.401.9), and it successfully flashed to my phone.
Now I have an updated hboot which actually pisses me off because if someone finds an exploit in a prior version and there's not any way to downgrade hboot, then I'm effed. I know I shouldn't be crossing my fingers anyway for s-off, but like to think that there's a good chance. Why did RUU give me those errors?

The error indicates that the bootloader on the phone is a newer version than the one in the RUU being flashed. That explains why the downgrade image failed, but you shouldn't be getting that when flashing the same version as is on the phone. Although you say you originally had "ota 1.26.401.2"; that version was the shipped software version not an OTA upgrade. The first OTA released was 1.28.401.9, so if you had installed an OTA since getting the phone it would have actually been 1.28, which would explain the 1.26 RUU failing as well. Other than that there's no reason I can think of for that to happen.

Exactly as stated, without S-OFF you can't go down an HBOOT version - you can only match or increase it

Yeah I had the factory shipped software 1.26.401.2. Never installed an ota update, so I'm confused why 1.26.401.2 ruu failed giving me error 140. Kind of sucks, whatever I'll get over it.

The same problem

Back up your ROM. Then ensure the device is locked:
fastboot oem lock
Run:
fastboot getvar version-main
To check you have a '401 device and then flash either the 2.17.401 RUU or the 3.14.401 RUU (if you want Jelly Bean).
The hboot I'll be updated, but we're not getting S-Off, and really, there's no need for it.

Same problem with my HTC One X

I am having the same problem with my HTC One X when trying to run RUU. I have tried 3 different RUU's for my Optus HTC One X (CID Optus001),
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_Optus_AU_1.26.980.3_Radio_1.1204.90.13_release_251942_signed,
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_Optus_AU_1.28.980.10_Radio_1.1204.103.14_release_258004_signed,
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_Optus_AU_1.29.980.11_Radio_1.1204.105.14_release_260560_signed.
I bricked my phone and I have no ROM because it broke when I was messing around with backups, recoveries, etc... If I start the phone normally it stops at HTC Quietly Brilliant.
I can flash a recovery at any time, but I have tried multiple CWM Recoveries to try to mount USB Storage so I can install a ROM but USB storage would not successfully mount, it would just say sdcard0 shared-unmounted.
I have flashed the stock recovery.img and relocked the bootloader, then tried to install those 3 RUU's with no luck.
Bootloader reads:
ENDEAVORU PVT SHIP S-ON RL

eMMC-bootmode: disbaled
CPU-bootmode : disabled
HW Secure boot: enabled
MODEM PATH : OFF
Nov 16 2012, 18:32:39
I ran 'fastboot getvar version-main' and it came back with
version-main: 3.14.980.27
finished. total time: 0.009s
Any help at all would be much appreciated as I need my phone working again ASAP.
Thank you.

If you have unlocked via HTCDev the this would have removed your CID in which case yes you should be able to flash the WWE RUU on a branded device.
If you have not unlocked and are still running stock then no it wont work.
Does HTCDev unlock remove CID? Unless it changed to 11111111 you still won't be able to flash an RUU AFAIK

It does indeed. It doesn't change it to 1111111 it completely removes it altogether.
I re locked the bootloader the other day and re-flashed the WWE RUU as im sending it back (screen flickering problem) and it worked with no issues.

I am Vodafone Australia and unlocked my phone via HTCdev. I am also facing the same problem (screen flickering)and need to send it back. I have re-locked it. As you just said "I re locked the bootloader the other day and re-flashed the WWE RUU as im sending it back" can you please explain how did you re-flash the WWE RUU? steps or link?

You need to get the vodafone au ruu. General wwe releases will not work for you. Pretty sure the correct ruu is available in the dev section.
Can't link, posting from phone.

Stock RUU for 1.28 needed
Hi there
I have effectively killed my HTC one - I unlocked via htcdev and upgraded the recovery - fastboot shows the device id when running the command fastboot devices.
However I am now stuck in a boot loop where the phone only boots to hboot (following a failed boot.img flash) I have downgraded back to stock recovery and re locked but cant find the 1.28 RUU to recover the device (and I did try the RUU for 1.26 but it wouldnt install)
Once I updated te recovery i ran the fastboot boot boot.img command
This failed to progress past the 'htc quietly brilliant' flash screen.
I dont have the rom .zip saved on my internal memory on the phone - I was hoping to be able to push it to the /data/ partition however when I try this sdb returns no connected device.
Wonder if anyone can assist in either
a - returning to stock with a RUU for 1.28
or
b - advise how to flash the files I need onto the phone (it seems that the ROM isnt booting so I assume its from the point I install boot.img and beyond I need so help)
Unfortunately I cant get the phone to boot to copy files to the memory so need to work entirely in fastboot and adb (assuming adb wil recognise the handset)
Many thanks
Gurry

But relocking it puts it back so unless you were on HTC__001 you'd be back on the VODAP001 CID

What do i do to get it working?
Maybe try to flash recovery like the radio. Put my file to /sdcard and flash how you know, volume'-' + power button to get bootloader, etc...
If recovery flashed successful, change the name of image file in sdcard, again turn on to bootloader and choose recovery boot.

As you are S-ON, you won't be able to flash a RUU that is not signed for your phone. That means, that you won't be able to flash a ruu that is not exactly for your phone / carrier. Don't try to install a CWM recovery not as PD98IMG nor in fastboot...you won't succeed as u are S-ON. You have just to flash a RUU for your correct model. What carrier and CID is your phone??
To find the CID you can get it by adb shell getprop in cmd. If you need help to do that just let me know.
so how do you chek the cid with adb? i tried it and no idea

Just let me see if I can get a RUU that can work for u. Then try to update again....
If you have never rooted voda UK have a policy to replace the device if it dies in a software update, it will be a reconditioned one but may be worth calling them. Voda au may be the same, worth a try to see before you try anything more, I had another phone within 24 hours. Hope this helps.

I downloaded 1.29.720 Ruu but I got bootloader error.
why??
I know there is no newer version of Indian RUU is available.
what should I do.

You should tell us what version you have.
If it's newer, then you can't run the RUU.
In which case you should install your android backup, I guess. Depends what you're trying to achieve.

That's the OTA file and can only be flashed over a phone running the previous version and is 100% stock. You'll have to wait for the RUU to surface

There is no matching ruu for you out, the only way to het back to stock is to restore a nandroid backup. If you don't have it yourself you can download this one
http://bugsylawson.com/files/file/190-cwm-nandroid-backup-cid-htc-038-31472024/
In basic steps :
1: unlock the bootloader
2: flash a custom recovery
3: flash the boot.img from the nandroid
4: make a full wipe in recovery
5: restore the nandroid backup
6: reboot

[Q] Replacing Orange DHD Nand to Vodafone DHD Nand

Hello again
short story
unlocked my bootloader via htc dev, tried every effort but couldnt install recovery on it.
its on 3.13.161.5 and the hboot is .0027
i somehow relock its bootloader thinking to unlock again and then proceed with root privilidge via ahc but failed
each time i tried to push via adb, it comes with err: verifying signature failed etc
cant flash cwm or any other via fastboot
i have nand of my other dhd (on orange)
can i use the nand( of orange) to revert back to stock and then unlock bootloader and flash recovery...?
or
how do i upgrade to .0029 from .0027 Hboot
Simple question but i cant find answer, may be mixed with things, just need some direction to point out...!
cheers

I mean back to stock without facing issues with bootloader unlocked
Or if I can upgrade my bootloader
My concern is to flash Rom
The mistake u made causing all this mess is I choose relocked option from ahkit
But it does not shows any on screen message to select relock
However my observation is its only a single thing I am missing
After relock I tried to unlock but err failed message
Can fastboot flash recovery either
And additionally can't proceed with anything other then receiving error signature failed
Some one please direct me towards right direction.....

[Q] HOX used - How to know wich RUU will work?

Hello everyone
I'm new and I read a lot of info in the forum after adding this thread. I just want to make sure what to do, please. Don't want a bricked phone
I recently bought a HOX Quad tegra 32gb from China by mail, comes with local chinese system.
After checking the rooting I was trying without success to install a sense based rom, like ordroidx and viperx. Can't boot after the installation. Even with fastboot boot.img command.
Finally the CM10 Rom could boot the device, but I want to get the apps based in the sense framework.
My guess is that the problem is with the hboot version.
So I tried to update Hboot from the version I have 0.43.0000 with JBFWTOOL21 and it stops sending me to this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543604
and telling me to download a RUU to be able to update my Hboot
Also tells that my device-main software is 1.29.401.11
The link doesn't work and I'm worried about choosing a ruu that ruins my phone.
Please give and advice.

Man, you scare me! I hope Mr Hofs can help me.
So far I'm downloading a RUU from androidfiles dot org
I was thinking that the last one in the list could work:
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.29.401.11_Radio_1.1204.105.14_release_260491_signed.exe
Do you think that is better to remain with a CM10 ROM? Could my phone be bricked if I install that RUU?
Anyone?
