ASK THE QUESTION [NOOB FRIENDLY]
I am not a full time developer! So do not request any roms or apps from me. I only make roms for my self and friends.
This thread is created to help members [noobs] to understand more about android and the device itself.
I decided to create this thread because the developers already have enough work to do, they wont be able to answer all questions from members [noobs].
I only owns the N7100 (galaxy note international model), but i will try by best to answer all of your questions using my experiences .

Firstly, is your device rooted? have you got cwm installed in your device before not being able to boot? If yes i recommend you to try and reflash the file and stock firmware through odin. MAKE SURE that it is for you device! [eg. for n7100 and not for n7105]
The stock browser doesn't have anymore the "zoom on the side" feature on XXDLK7? or is it custom rom specific? any way to get it back?
Thanks^^

Should get chrome hahaha but anyways, there is a possibilty that it is rom specific but that is very unlikely, as developers would not really wanna touch the stock browser as normally i would see they would add an alternative browser such as chrome to their roms. To get the feature back you might need to push the app from the previous rom/version you were using.

TriangleAway crash
Hello, thanks for this thread. I have a GT-N7100 now but previously i had GT-9100 and i'm familiar with rooting, rom flashing, etc.. and i've used TriangleAway so many times. When i get my hands on note 2 first thing i've done was rooting it with CF Auto Root package via Odin. then i've done wiping steps and after that i tried to flash my counter via TriangleAway(purchased from market). It said i have to download data to use it so i did. When TriangleAway opened "Current Status" said current status cannot be determined so i have to go special boot mode for reset. So i tried to reset my counter. Unfortunately when app tried to check for kernel, first app froze and after that it crashed and showed a warning about app being stopped. I tried to delete and re-install app(no good), gone to download mode it said normal status with 1 custom software install, looked to recovery menu for any changes(it is stock not CWM) and tried to find any wrong thing i've screwed up while rooting. But i couldn't find anything. I've looked at chainfire's blog, TriangleAway app post and everywhere i can think of. I cannot find anything. Can u help me with my problem. Thank you for your time and if i misused English anyhow and it came difficult to read sorry in advance.

I used cf auto root on a friends n7100. The counter was reset by auto root itself.
You dont need triangle away as separate app. Just use cf auto root and make sure you use the right version for n7100
EDIT: you need triangle away for the counter. Auto root just installs stock recovery after rooting. I was wrong.
Sent from my GT-I9100G using xda app-developers app
Ktp1976 well even before i used TriangleAway counter was showing 1 due to CF Auto Root flash via Odin. But what you are saying is interesting thoug i've never seen something like it.
GT-N7100 cihazımdan Tapatalk 2 ile gönderildi
As it seems you are right and my memories were wrong
It installs stock recovery after rooting. You need triangle away to reset the counter. I just looked it up under forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933542
I did not have any problems though.

Hi, at the moment i would recommend you to try and restock again and then try to reset the counter. You can also try and download the triangle away version from the xda forum(i know its the same but who knows it might make a difference). If this does not work, i would recommend you to try and install redpill kernel and then try to reset counter again then restock, if you are running a custom roms in your phone, everytime you reboot the device will store a counter, so you will have to reset the counter everytime. Hope i have helped you.

Your case is really weird, maybe try root it before installing the cwm and see what happens. Then after that try and restock it again.

First of all thank you and ktp1976 for answering.. Ok now i'm re-download everything from your thread and try it again.. I saw redpill kernel yesterday while i was searching is there any siyah kernel for note 2.. I luvved siyah kernel on my sgs2 but unfortunately there isn't one for it and developer wrote he will not wrote any version of siyah kernel for note series anytime soon.. so while i was looking for a kernel written by a suggested developer from gokhanmoral i came across to it.. the thing is i never have used any kernels double rom features or try to overlock any of my devices, i tried custom roms like miui, cyanogen, lightning on sgs2 but there was always a downside of all of the custom roms and every single time i've re-return to stock roms.. and while using stock roms i don't need any cutting edge features of advanced kernels i just need root permissions for using TitaniumBackup, Root Explorer and ROM ToolBox.. so that is the reason why i didn't try to have an advanced kernel.. Still if you are saying i will need it i will give it a shot.. I'll report after.. :fingers-crossed:
Looking into rooting? Maybe try this foreign ROM thing? (Not talking about ethnicities here) Here is the place to be.
First of all, make sure you have a T-Mobile Galaxy S3. (Aka t999 or d2tmo)
If you follow instructions here for any other device, even for galaxy s3's of another carrier you are extremely likely to regret it and end up having to unbrick your device because you installed an incompatible file.
You can take your battery out to make sure it says t999 under if you are not absolutely sure.
Rooting is a similar idea to jail breaking an iPhone. It removes what restrictions there are with android devices. Yes, it is perfectly legal.
Which leads me to my disclaimer:
I take no credit for what's posted here.
The only work here that's mine is the organization. Please donate to the rightful people who spent quality time developing.
Also I am not responsible for any damage done to your device.
It is vital that you follow instructions in every exact detail.
Firstly, rooting.
1. Install drivers for your device onto your PC. To do this, you can install Samsung Kies or there are downloads that will install the drivers solely(recommended link for drivers http://d-h.st/zya)(thanks DocHoliday77). If you get to the point where you can exchange files to phone from the computer and vice-versa then you're set for drivers.
2. Do a backup (using Kies or a program of your choice)
3.Uninstall Kies. Kies doesn't play nicely with the program used to root called Odin. So uninstall Kies so Odin can work unhindered. Your drivers should stay. But make sure you can still copy files between your phone and computer before proceeding.
4.Follow these instructions put together by OfficialPhoneRebel(aka EverythingApplePro):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKwhAVj5Feg Outdated. try CF-Auto-Root
Yes, I used this method and it did work for me.
5.After you are rooted, the first thing you wanna do is either install ROM manager (on play store). Open ROM manager. (Yes, give it superuser rights) and install the latest clockworkmod recovery, or use GooManager to get TWRP recovery, both work, but sometimes one is suggested for the installation of a specific ROM.
6.Now install busybox(also in play store)
7.You're all done!
If you've made it this far, kudos. Now you're gonna wanna get the app called titanium backup and do a full backup of your phone. Also boot into recovery (home+volume up then press power until it vibrates all while holding home+volume up buttons) do a backup through these menus. If your feeling like an over achiever and wanna be super safe then go ahead and back up to both your internal sdcard and your external sdcard. Also it now would be wise to back up your IMEI nv (basically your phone's identity), instructions for that can be found here (thanks to daxecutioner24)
Now you have reached a possible stopping point. Stop here and enjoy root privileges. Continue to read how to install a custom ROM.
Installing a custom ROM(operating system):
GooManager (on play store) is a pretty good directory for ROMs. And is a great place to download them and gapps. Now since not every ROM installs this way it is important to check the main page associated with that page to see if any special instructions are required.
But this is what you generally do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946701
Roms:
Gapps can be found either on the ROM's page or through goo manager make sure the firmware versions match up (like android 4.1 and 4.1 jelly bean gapps)
For a pure android ROM I would suggest CyanogenMod 10.1 (the one I am currently on)
For an inverted stock ROM stuffed with fun features I would suggest DaRTHSTALKER S3
For a full list of roms and descriptions or if your just addicted to flashing, then here's the stockpile of almost every rom made for the galaxy s3 t999
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2088179
Backups are your friend. Especially through recovery mode. They have saved my butt several times when flashing a ROM went wrong.
And yes it is possible to sim unlock (make it so you can use it on any GSM network(such as at&t or US cellular)) your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037390
Problem happened and you can no longer boot correctly? This is actually very common.
If you can boot into recovery:
Boot into recovery (Hold home button and volume up then press power till it vibrates all while holding volume up and home)
Restore backup (easiest method)
If that falls through then install a rom by following the instructions mentioned earlier.
If you can't boot into recovery or if those methods didn't work:
You must odin to stock. Follow the instructions here under using odin. Odin and Driver files are at the top of the post. Firmware files (what you put in PDA) are located here
If this didn't work, you may be out of luck, try again and if you are still stuck browse the forums and possible post something under Q and A if worst comes to worse, make sure to describe the entire situation including error messages you may have received so the problem can be pinpointed.
And finally, everyone be nice seeing as I am welcoming very new people to this thread.
Also if any suggestions to improve this post let me know.

Good job
I like this post, would save those useless threads how do I root even though it's sticky all over. Also it would be really helpful if you include how to back up your IMEI nv maybe link the thread before they start flashing roms. This is probably one of the most important thing as when you start flashing stuff the IMEI might get lost and without that there is no phone. Everything else looks good.

Thank you!! I implemented that into my instructions. The goal of this thread is to be the thread that everyone can direct newbies here and not have a thousand different threads on the same thing. Also this way people can get their answers faster seeing as their questions will be in the same known place not in some obscure oddly-titled thread in the wrong section. Thanks!

I suggest either CF AutoRoot or root66 (see firmware link in my sig) as the best ways too root. Imo.

Yes this works for that all you needed to do is click on the CF-Auto-Root method during the process and that would've been explained to you. I have used CF-Auto-Root atleast twice on two different galaxy s3's running jellybean 4.1.2 and it worked more than flawlessly

What about kernels? What exactly are they and how should you flash them (do you even need to)?
Can you still use Galaxy S3 motion activated features after flashing a custom ROM?

kernel is when hardware need something like you bluetooth or need to adjust screen brightness it send a request to kernel bla bla bla.
you can only flash a kernel that is compatible to your rom by rebooting to recovery

The way I understand it is the kernel is the bridge between your input and the devices output. Like the bridge between software and hardware... Sorta.. Ya you don't need to flash one sometimes custom kernels can add features and maybe improve GPS/battery life but I don't use custom kernels much. But that's just me some people are in to that stuff.
And yeah it just depends on the specific ROM for the specific features. I don't know if this is still a think its been a while since I've had some Samsung action but check our hyperdrive they had some good stuff going on when I used em.
Best bet is Google. Everything you could ever want to know about kernels and more! If you want to know about custom ones, read the OP's of the many available ones.

You are not rooted if apps won't pull it. You don't need root to theme. There are plenty of launchers. Since you seem to have a CWM, you can flash a rooted ROM.

Whats going on guys? I'm running into a mindboggling issue with my fiance's T-mobile Galaxy S2. I'm going to run down exactly what happened, and if anyone has any suggestions or insight... please share it with me.
Ok first things first, I installed the firmware upgrade through Kies to 4.1.2 the same exact way I did on my S2 just a few minutes before... Except this time, as soon as the phone powered up I got the com.google.process.gapps not working error. I did a little research on it first through here and the most common thing i found was to enable download manger... HOWEVER, under her apps list there isnt any form of a download manager on it. So i checked my phone, just to see if it was a firmware problem, but my phone has DOWNLOADS, as Well as DOWNLOAD MANAGER. There was no way for me to download one through the Google Play on her phone because the phone force closes Google Play as soon as you press it.
From there I downloaded all of the drivers, and odin, so that i could just upload the old 2.3.6 stock rom back on the phone... That worked correctly as well, but as soon as the "Press the Andriod" to setup appeared, I encountered the same error message as before. "(com.google.process.gapps not working) as well as setup wizard not working, and now its not allowing me to set the phone up at all. Does anyone have any insight on this? All help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks!!!
******edit********
I've figured out where i went wrong... I didn't move su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip or Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip onto the internal memory before I flashed the 2.3.6 stock rom through odin... Now that i cant get past the "TOUCH THE ANDRIOD TO START SETUP" screen... is there any way i can put it onto the internal memory?

U don't need the su file at all, all that file does is give superuser permissions, try using Odin to flash the stock 4.1.2 firmware to the device that should fix it, like I said u don't NEED the su file, that's only for root, u could Odin a twrp recovery and use that to flash a stock ROM with working gapps, my guess is u just had a faulty kies upgrade and it didn't quite update right, kies is funny sometime, and when u use Odin u need to make sure there is NO trace of kies running at all, remove it from the PC if u can, download the twrp2.6.tar file from http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules and use Odin the same way u did the GB firmware, this will give u custom recovery from there download a stock ROM from here, or go get cl3keners tw-speed-stock ROM from goo.com, mount storage through twrp and move the ROM to ur external SD card, go back to main screen in twrp and select install, find the ROM and flash it, now u will be on stock rooted firmware and should have no issues, pm me if u need further help

Hey all, my sister just got a brand new GSII from T-mobile and wants me to put cyanogenmod on there. I saw that the 4.3 was still a bit buggy so I'm going with 10.1 / android 4.2
All of the stickys for rooting are a bit old so I'm not totally confident choosing one without posting first. She's on 4.1.2, what would you guys say is the best route for rooting? the toolkit? the odin way? or the last method. Speaking of which, is this phone T989 or the D?
Looking forward to answers, thanks guys!
PS - Do these rooting methods also unlock the phone?
Tmob is the t989, the kodo version is the t989D. I used Odin when I rooted mine a few months ago. I'm also on tomb.

The best and only way to go is to Odin the latest twrp tar file onto the device the flash superuser zip of ur choice, once u Odin the recovery to the device though u can just flash the cm zip and gain root that way if u want a custom rom, rooting this phone is very easy its all in the recovery

I used Odin and flashed a 4.2 rom, If your looking for a stable rom then just stick to 4.2/4.1.2 roms as 4.3 roms aren't stable enough as a DD and probably won't be for a few weeks/months.
Like others said Odin is the easiest way.. Before this phone I rooted my HTC vivid that dam phone was retarded unlocking it had to connect the ground wire to the positive battery on mother board than sync with the file it was stupid hard compared to this phone

Ok so I rooted with ODIN and flashed CWM. Made a backup, put CM and Gapps on SD card, factory wipe, dalvik/cache wipe, installed zips, and its stuck in boot loop. What went wrong? How can I stop loop? Remove battery?
I also adb pushed the libskia.so file based on some searching and still nothing...
then just tried restoring the backup and that wouldnt work either! going to restore back to stock until hopefully I get some answers
Did you wipe the system partition too or just a factory reset?

wipe data/factory
wipe cache partition
then in advanced we have
wipe dalvik cache
wipe battery stats
thats it for wipes..
Don't mean to hijack the thread, but i have the T989D. I was wondering if i can flash the same twrp versions as the t989. And what version of superuser should i get? Also, is twrp2.4 fine for flashing the latest roms (this is the one i have downloaded right now)?
Thanks in advance!

If ur using any newer rom besides 4.3 try using twrp older cwm has a problem flashing the newer roms, it doesnt like to load the preload partition so u will end up with boitloops, if u want 4.3 u need the 4.3 recovery, u can find it in the op, just flash in recovery and then reboot to recovery and flash 4.3

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong...
Root via Odin, root successful
Flash CWM
wipe every option
install zips from sd (cm10.1 for GS2 Tmob/ and the 10.1 gapps)
reboot, still loops,
push .so, still looping
what else is there?

U can go one of two ways, for twrp u can DL the flashable zip and flash it in cwm, or u can use Odin and DL the tar file for the latest twrp and flash it over cwm with Odin, and the 4.3 recovery zip is flashable right through recovery

Which cwm are you using?
You have to go to mounts and storage

FINALLY!!!!!!!! so much old info on here, should really be redone. It was due to the old recovery, thank you! I woulda never figured that out.
HOW TO ROOT AND FLASH CYANOGENMOD 10.1 TO YOUR TMOB GS2 IN 2013!
Download latest 10.1 ROM and put on your SD card or internal storage
CM10.1 nightly
Download latest Google Apps/Gapps under the 10.1 column and put on your SD card or internal storage
Gapps
Download Odin3-v3.307
Odin3-v3.307.zip
If you're already on Android version 4.1.2 then you're fine, continue below, if not;
Download 4.1.2 stock rom
Tmobile GS2 Stock 4.1.2 ROM
1) “Extract” or “unzip” the downloaded stock ROM to get the .tar.md5 file
2) Run Odin3_v3.07.exe on PC desktop
3) In Odin - only check ‘Auto Reboot’ and ‘F-Reset’
4) Click on the PDA button then browse to the folder where you extracted the stock ROM “tar file”
‘T989UVMC6_T989TMB_T989UVMC6_HOME.tar.md5′
5) Connect USB cord to phone and PC and boot into download mode. In Odin, the ID:COM box will change its color and its an indication that the device is connected properly to PC. If you still do not get any results, try another USB port on your computer.
6) Click the Start button to begin flashing.
7) Wait until it finishes or watch out for the word “PASS”.
Once the phone completely reboots, perform wipe/factory reset to get a fresher firmware installation.
1. Hold Power and Volume Up together, this will switch the device into recovery mode.
2. Release Power after holding it for a second but continue to hold the Volume Up button until recovery menu appears.
Select wipe cache
Select wipe data/factory reset.
Select reboot
That’s all! your Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989 now fully installed or restored to the original Android 4.1.2 Jelly bean
Ok, now that you're on 4.1.2, let's continue. The above step is also how to restore the phone back to stock.
Follow this STEP BY STEP noob friendly way to root, using the ODIN v3 provided above
Root Tmob GS2
Flash custom recovery
Download the TWRP recovery mode
TWRP 2.2 for Tmob GS2 aka Hercules recovery.tar.md5
plug phone back into PC and put in download mode
select the pda and select the recovery.tar file, hit start and let it finish
boot into recovery
wipe system, dalvik, cache, etc.
select install
find your cm10.1zip and install
then find your gapps.zip and install
reboot, could take about 2-5 mins.
DONE!
