[Q] Jellybean gives me choppy playback on HD video (720p and above) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I used to be able to watch 720p video without any problem in MX Player, but after switching to Jellybean the picture is choppy. If I switch to software rendering instead of hardware it improves somewhat, but it's still choppy at least every other minute or so until it recovers. If I play it in the VLC beta I get artifacts every now and then until it works itself out.
Anyone recognize this issue and has any idea what to do about it?

Probably best to wait till we have a full version and not just a developer preview leaked version.

Well, that wasn't very constructive. I'm perfectly aware it's a leaked version, I'm just wondering if it's a known issue first of all and secondly if there's anything to do about it. If the only answer you can give is "don't use leaked/unstable roms" then you might as well not answer at all.

Not an expert at this but I think it's because the codec with MX or VLC player isn't optimized for JB yet?

[MOD] [720p HW PLAYBACK] libOmxVdec.so (removal of h/w restrictions in playback)

best 720p solution yet.
Just want to inform all desire owners of Diceplayer.
It dosent support our phone (they say).
But it works flawless if you patch
libOmxVdec.so
wich is meant for the nexus-1.
Since N1 and desire share alot hardware i figured it might also work for our desire.
IT DID!!
This is my first thread or even post on xda.

What Rom Does it Work on?
GB/FROYO - Sense/Non-sense?
Apparently what it does is, it removes restrictions in the h/w decoding. I think the devs of cyanogenmod should look into this and integrate it into their libs.

I use it with cyanogenmod. So yes. Not sure with other roms but i suspect the libs are the same with sense roms.
The modified lib brings h/w hd functionality to other players aswell. Free alternatives like qqplayer. Probably other players also.
Someone should hint the devs of cyanogen to integrate the functionality into their roms. Devices that are capable. The Nexus-1 and desire.
Just tested it on Rcmix 2.0 sense rom still lags
So basically it will work on GingerVillain 2.7, too? Well, I'll try and see.
Playback yes iirc, but isn't 720p recording Sense only feature?

You must use a player that uses hardware rendering. Default setting in many players are software rendering. Change to hardware rendering (in player).
it worked, but messed up the weather vids on cool sensation though.
hi to all,
just tried the patch and i would dare to correct the OP, well at least in my situation, 720p video playback didnt become without lag, however, now its less laggy. im using GB rom, Rcmix 2.0 with CM7r2 partition table, and class 10 16GB micro sd card (reading writing 11mb/s, reading 22 mb/s). so it has nothing to do with the card, however, as i said there much less lag now but videos are still not as smooth as i used to have on 2.2 based ROMS. but if htc release proper GB rom then maybe developers will be able to do something about it
don't work 4 me

You should write, which rom/kernel you are using. Otherwise your information is very senseless.

Well. I am using cyanogen kernel and nightly rom. I have a class 10 sd card (sd-booster 2048).
I am having good results with 720 mkv video (diceplayer and qqplayer).
it works..!
took quite awhile for me to get SDK adb working.. but now it works so smooth!!
either on dice player or native player!
kudos for TS
PS: im also on CM7 rom and kernel, S2E a2sd, and stock 2GB SD card
work on leedroidhd?!
Would it work on Insertcoin stock GB rom?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
no idea of other roms aside from CM7, but i suggest to do nandroid backup, and then follow instruction inside the link from 1st post..
@OP - Are you part of dev team for this? I ask because you seem very keen to get this integrated into CM and you seem to have a lot of technical info.
BTW, I tried it on CM7.1RC1 and find lag. The "News & Tips" page you linked to does actually state though that 720p does lag at present until possibly the next update.

If you manage to load the lib correctly (works in cm7, thats all i know) you should feel big difference from regular software encoding players like rockplayer etc.
Shure. there are some lags. But as i stated before. noting in comparison to software enc. based players. Very large 720 mkv may lag. But a typical 4gig 720p mkv plays well.
No. Im not in the dev team. I just been searching for a solution to play hi def mkv video. And this is by far the best solution.
What i do is every time i reflash my rom (cm nightly) i replaces the lib from first post with the one included in cm7 .zip file. /system/lib/libomxvdec.so
For testing this you must make sure diceplayer or any other player, is set to hardware encoding. Otherwise no improvement in playback.

What is wrong with video recording in MIUI 3.2.22 Jelly Bean v4.8?

I can't get what is wrong with video recording on subj.
When I record 3gp video I can't play it later. Neither built-in gallery nor 3rdparty desktop and mobile players (vplayer, vlc) can play it... What is wrong?
I've switched to this rom from another to get working video and so disappointed now =(

according to some of the comments on that roms thread it looks like a common/known problem.
Also none of the ICS/JB roms that i have tried had decent video recording, so dont expect too much unless you are willing to go back to gingerbread.
well, most comments is about "choppy" video, but that is not a description of my problem... =( Nobody wrote he can't play recordered video (Or I did not find any reports)
Does it work in the rom from you signature?

The comments on choppy video recording usually go hand in hand with playback.
If its recording badly, then its very likely that it wontplay well either.
The ROM in my sig records and plays it back but its choppy and sometimes gets pixelated, exactly how its been in every jb/ics ROM I've tried so far.

Has anyone seen a fix for jerky kitkat video playback?

I just started using a gopro, and thought my issues were with its video recording, but it looks like everything that's 1080p in kitkat no longer plays back smoothly, but is a bit jerky, and it looks like there is a framerate issue.
(This is with the default player, or MX)
I don't see any mention of a fix for this anywhere, and I'd think it would be considered a major kitkat feature bug.

1080p Playback on Beanstalk 4.4.278

My Acro S is running Beanstalk 4.4.278. Great rom so far but 1080p playback (specifically on MX Player) does not work. Freezes and reboots my phone when I try. 1080p recording with latest Google Camera works like a charm but its frustrating I can't view any of them. I haven't tried playback on any other video players though. I removed the video player that came with KitKat or the rom btw so I can't try that too.
Any help or advice?

Just tried it (since I had never tried it before you mentioned it) and it works fine. The video is a little juttery, but I can live with that.
Running BeanStalk v4.4.285, on the same phone.. Kernel is 3.4.0-Evovle-v1.11+ [email protected]
I think you might want to upgrade to the latest version - that might fix it.

Any notable bugs on 4.4.285? I might upgrade if that will fix the playback problem and if there aren't any annoying bugs..

There are two that are a bit annoying (again, not everyone has these though, so you might get lucky).
1. Sometimes when a call comes in, the screen will either stay blank and take a while to light up (by which time the caller has hang up)
2. Sometimes streaming a video online (with any player, not just MX) will crash and force the device to reboot when you try to exit watching the video.
These are the two major issues that I find on my phone. Never the less, I still prefer this version to stock, so I have been using it for more than a month now and I am very happy.

[Q] What are these pink lines on my videos?

Getting these artifacts on YouTube videos regardless of video quality, even get them on my stock video player, have to change decoder in MX Player from HW to SW. Phone is Samsung Galaxy Grand with CM 12.1 but the issue has been present since stock.
Screenies below.

Normally I would say bad maybe a bad rom, but you say you have this on all roms.
Only in youtube?

No, get this on almost all players barring some exceptions. I get this on MX Player too unless change the decoder to S/W decoder. You're using the same phone as me, are you sure you're not getting this at all?

No problem here with all the roms I used and tested.
Like I said it could be a rom/driver problem, but when you have that since day one on every rom then I would be thinking of a hardware problem
