It depends on your carrier, for my tmobile us wfs it can downgrade only to 1.03.0001. I think for the Europe versions that it can downgrade to 0.90.0000

Locked bootloader or S-off?
That mean I can use this to downgrade this phone
***LOCKED***
1.09.0099
0451
7.57.39.10M
and then use your other tool to allow me to root/unlock/cwm it?

There is a little mistake in the tool, you have to be unlocked -> set superversion (my tool) -> locked in order to use the ruu
I will release v1.3 tomorrow

[Official Unlocking Bootloader] HBOOT HTC Desire

HTC is committed to assisting customers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC Desire:
http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/PB9920000_Bravo_Froyo_hboot_1.03.0003_R.exe
http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/PB9940000_BravoC_S-RUU_Alltel_UTSI_001-27_hboot_1.09.exe
http://www.htcdev.com/ruu/PB9940000_BravoC_S-RUU_UTSI_028-47_hboot_1.09.exe
After this you must reboot in FastBoot Mode and type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_tokenSubmit
Then submit the token in order to receive your unlock code binary file...
When copying the token, start with this line:
<<<< Identifier Token Start >>>>
And end with this line:
<<<<< Identifier Token End >>>>>
The difference with the official way is that you only unlock the bootloader. You don't get S-OFF so you can't make changes 'on the fly' with Android running, you'd need to do changes with the phone in HBOOT/fastboot mode.
Hi,
thanks man. I'll have a good play with this later today.

If you are using AlphaRev's HBOOT, you should flash downgrade hboot first to be able to flash any other hboot...
I tried this last night but when I tried to flash the unlock binary file it just sat there then came up failed.

the official way of unlocking bootloader. a bit more restrictive than true s-off (cant flash radio)
theres a thread with a little discussion about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431726
FYI.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=662710
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

it's what I was thinking, what's the point of unlocking it with this.. and if you do that I bet you won't be able to flash an alpharev hboot since you can't roll back hboot version, and running revolutionary won't work since it's different hboot version.
That's my hypothesis on this anyway.
Yup. Correct. Unless you flash a hexedited version of this hboot, which has the version downgraded. Any guineapigs? It's useless, unless you plan to retain HTC's stock recovery to flash custom roms. Which again is useless..

Including me.. There's no way to be completely sure that the hexedited portion is the correct bit which decides the version. I flashed a hexedited hboot onto my device, and it did downgrade the version number displayed on the hboot screen, but that does not mean the version lock happens there.
But for fun, you can change the bit that says Alpharev/Revolutionary to whatever you like.

S-OFF stands for security off. It basically means you don't need to
flash a boot.ing before flashing a ROM.Also let's you root the phone
without unlocking the bootloader

And......change the partion sizes of the NAND. This was a common use in devices that shipped with low storage ie. Nexus one, desire, etc.
Example one:
If you use an SD card, you probably have the 95.3 MB of "phone storage" sitting unused. With S off it is easy to reasign this as "internal storage" for apps instead of wasting it
Example two:
Your device is no longer updated / and / or you will never use the OTA feature. Our phone has 4 GB internal storage, yet only 0.95GB is accesable to us. Some is used for system, cache, and partions for things like OTA updates. You can install a new hboot that leaves more room for "system" allowing larger ROMs, or more for "internal" to allow for more programs to be installed, etc .........
Rooting gives you "root access" to the file structure, kinda like an admin on a windows computer, no files are "hidden", all can be read and edited
Unlocking the bootloader allows custom ROM images, kernels, boot animations, etc to be "flashed"
S-off is security off. This allows you to repartion the nand, or flash anything, including another operating system if it was available. You have complete and utter control of your own device.

Im s off and i havent found how to make my phone locked rather than relocked. Admittedly i havent needed to but its not obviously available info.
All in all the best thing about soff is restoring nandroids and not needing to use a pc to flash the boot. Pretty much everything else you can do with s on. Even rom zips dont contain the boot flash commands anymore so i still use fastboot.
Good article from mike

Excellent article... If we didn't have s-on, there would be tons of bricked devices in the QnA thread!
It's better to wait for a few months for the update than to have a 600 dollar paper weight..

Having had many HTC devices with CID, I deliberately made damn sure I had a WWE HTC_001 device.
Couldn't care less about S-Off. Can flash anything I want as it is.
Please don't discuss about committing warranty fraud, it's not something we condone here at XDA

I want to be able to flash a Rom without needing a computer

ahaha that's one of the most important things s-off was useful for though
S-Off is useless unless you have a phone that can't write boot from recovery (like ours) or you want to edit radio.
Also, not even the Nexus 4 has S-Off as far as I know, it just has an unlocked bootloader like us except it can write to boot from recovery.
HTC made the right move with the HTC One of going back to their ways of allowing recovery to write to boot as it has made a *lot* more developers buy their new phone because of it.

Does that mean that even if we had s-off we would still have to flash boot through fastboot?

Exactly, its the writing of the boot.img from recovery that is the useful bit - soff or not (for Rom zips, kernel zips and nandroids).

Thanks.
Its frustrating, the only reason I want a new device is to get rid of the pesky nede to use my computer every time i want to update. Other then that the One X is fantastic!

Nice to know. I was struggling if s-off my phone or not. I think I will not take advantage of it.
Is it possible to flash a kernel(boot.img) by renaming it and restart to bootloader? Or is fastboot the only way?

True . If we can't get APX mode access we can't do much.
