There are these so called self-starting apps. Even when you close them, they will launch themselves automatically. (Like for example NOVA, Tap Tap Revenge 4, Letang games, and a lot of others).
Even if you dont use these apps, they will still take up ram.
Go to settings/applications/running services. Basically you will see there all running apps. Press menu and tap view cached apps... You will see even more. All those open apps contribute to ram usage. The best option would be to use swapper, which creates virtual ram.
The next best thing is to uninstall all your self starting apps. You might even want to root uninstall google maps and google mail.

Why does everyone complain in every single question thread? If it wasn't for such threads the S5360 General board would be dead.

If you're a new user, the tendency is that you ask if you can't find the answer. Tell me fellow XDA users, have you seen generic how to's in the FAQ? Like Clearing RAM and/or memory workarounds?
-well, enough of spam thing. We should have a quick troubleshooter guide for SGY. I might take that as another project here on XDA once I am finished with SGY for Dummies 2nd Edition or I might include it there in my Parts of Ten thing XD
Anyway, regarding your problem...
Background apps are cached in the memory, meaning they stay there until they are closed -but sometimes even if they are closed some still remain, simply because the app has a running process which is a system service. Example of this are apps that monitor phone/system events like: SMS/Messaging apps, Widgets, event handling apps like Tasker/Automator etc etc.
So how how can you solve this problem?
1. As advised by fellow XDA users, you can install V6 Supercharger. You can follow the steps on my guide. The link is down below my signature it's painless and it has a quick guide for those who are annoyed by long tiring-to-read instructions.
2. You don't want to install scripts or simply you are shocked by the long step-by-step guide I made for V6 Supercharger, then you can again, use the tools our phone have -and that is clearing the memory using the built in task manager. If that is not enough, close or terminate running services, again using the task manager.
3. Number 2 doesn't work -please ask someone who at least posted a reply on my V6 supercharger guide to upload "Engine Flush Script" -this is only available to those who have v6 supercharge installed. Now what do you need to do with that script? -that will flush your phone's RAM, meaning it will clear the RAM leaving high priority system only services. This will give you the most amount of free ram possible. This scripts needs Script Manager to run and you'll need Script Manager Widget to create a widget on your home screen and that widget will be your "tap to clear memory" switch.
Lastly, keep it in mind that 1 and 2 requires your phone to be rooted.
If you still have questions please don't be afraid to ask, but make sure you don't ask pretty obvious questions that the answers are in front of your waiting to be noticed. In behalf of this section, I apologize about what others said about this thread, it's just that most of us had enough of spam. We're all harmless here and we don't bite!

Anyone Using Tasker?

Anyone here using it? what is this app for? is it worth buying? does it give u battery life? im really interested but i cant find no videos on it on youtube. please share your thoughts.
I have it because it's the only app Ive found that can turn the GPS on remotely. I have it set up to turn on the GPS whenever it receives a certain text msg and then text back the phones location.
It's really useful once you learn it, plus the GPS feature alone is well worth the money.
I'm just about done with my week trial and I will probably wait to buy it. Android 2.2 drops the ability to kill apps which is a huge deal breaker for me when it comes to this app. The author has stated that a fix for root users is possible, but it's not high on his todo list.
That being said this app it great for automating things. When I plug in my car charger the phone automatically sends calls to speakerphone, reads any incoming texts out loud, turns off the display timeout, goes to auto brightness, and loads my speedometer app. Now if only it could kill the app when I unplug the phone!
Sent from your mom's phone.
I've been using it for about three weeks now. It replaced several other apps that were not playing nice together and does much more. I noticed an improvement in battery life, but that could also be because I am running fewer apps now.
It can either increase or decrease your battery life. It depends on what you have it doing. Check out the Power page on the website for more info.
I mainly use it for changing settings based on location. Different profiles for home, work, in the car, and everywhere else.
I did find that it is better to use network location for "Near" which then enables the GPS location for "At" to save battery and yet still get precision.
I also have it setup to do things based on battery level.
The coolest is that I have a profile based on plugging in the headphones that brings up a list of media players. No more poking around just to listen to music.
Overall I am very happy with the app.

I've been dying to ask this of someone who's played around with it - I'd pick it up and try it myself, but just can't swing it right now.
Do you know the issue with Google navigator pausing Pandora tracks? Would it be possible to set up a profile that would fix that? Something like "if nav pauses Pandora, when nav stops talking, hit play in Pandora"?

I haven't tried it yet, as this is the first I've heard of Tasker. But, if you go to the website:
http://tasker.dinglisch.net/index.html
you can download a trial good for 7 days. The developer even says you can uninstall and reinstall if 7 days isn't long enough. So, I'm going to try it out myself.

Sorry, confused. What does any of that have to do with tasker? Are you asking about task killers?
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Well, i am a tasker user and love it. it can change and setting your phone has, well almost, but still more than an other app like it. Locale is far less useful and costs more. The other one i forget its name i have not used but tasker from what i read pwns it. I recommend this app for anyone who needs to tell the phone to do things automatically or based on locations.

Then I guess the confusing part is why you posted that comment in this thread..
You have an opinion about tasker, and you post here about task killers (irrelevant to the thread topic) and don't even offer an answer or your opinion about tasker to the OP..
And yes, you are correct about FroYo making Task Killers useless. You can still use them to manually kill off apps but apparently the kill-all intervals don't work like they did on 2.1
This is getting OT of the OP, but if you want a task killer on 2.2 then check out the app "autostarts". It's not a task killer, it's a task preventer. It's pretty cool and works great.
been using Tasker for a few weeks now and i love it. and i'm still playing in the shallow end of what it can do.
configured quiet times based on if i'm oncall or not. also to toggle radios based on gps zones. (and to ensure i have a work appropriate desktop image )

man you arent looking to make friends. every post i see from you, you are acting like a true ****. maybe you should calm yourself and be a little considerate of the other people on the forum and stop with the act.
As for tasker. I agree with many many others that have said it is a great app once you get it set up. I have it do mostly basic things such as when car charger is plugged in turn on bluetooth start navigation app. when near work turn ringer to vibrate and turn media volume down. when home turn ringer on media volume on and wifi on turn bluetooth off. stuff like that. I havent noticed it giving me extra battery but i love that i dont have to remember to mess with all my settings.

You could always try posting something relevant to the thread that you're posting in, or possibly starting a new thread on the subject that you wanted to discuss, instead of bringing your off topic complaining here...or hey, even acknowledge that people answered your off topic questions pretty well, and gave you some leads. Oh, and I love how you brought Obama into a tasker thread. What's next, godwin? At least you now realize that you should search first, and ask questions after. Which is good - it shows that you can comprehend some things if you put your mind to it.
Anyway, back on topic. I've started to play around with the different settings and profiles that tasker gives you, and the only thing that's become clear to me is why they give you a weeks free trial. Damn! This app has a lot of options!

someone. somewhere. brought up the fact that froyo took away the capability to kill tasks (unleas your rooted, right?). my question is perfectly legitimate, and i think with the topic at hand is qualifying of a question about my original question. i didnt get hyped or flamed up in anyway. my OP was crystal clear, mirroring a statement someone said earlier, and the person confused it aint my fault.

Yeah, that was me, I came right out and said I was confused as to why you were bringing it up in my other post (all polite like, I might add), because you didn't use the quote feature, and I missed where it had been mentioned before - it looked like you just started talking about some random topic in a thread about tasker. Instead of clarifying that it was brought up in a previous post, you got all internet tough on the thread, and it all went down hill from there. See that? Simple misunderstanding.

XDA Gallery - Chrome Extension - Now on Chrome Store

What is it:
This is a quick extension I coded up to turn XDA threads into an image gallery. The extension button will enable when you're on a topic that it is able to translate, clicking it will open a new tab that dynamically fetches images as your scroll down. Keep in mind this is an Alpha, did it in one day, so it may ( read "most likely" ) will have problems. Its great on those "Post your screenshots" ( wallpapers, cases, whatever ) type threads.
Permissions:
- "Access your data on forum.xda-developers.com" - This is to fetch images from the forum, I haven't messed around with removing it since I was just using this personally but decided to release to you. Promise I don't care, nor gather, anything about what you do on XDA.
- "Access your tabs and browsing activity" - This is to detect when you switch between tabs and enable/disable the extension button. Also I do have this hooked into Google Analytics now, but I only gather extension page views to see what's being used. In the future I'll be hooking it into events as I add features( if it's popular enough ) to decide where to put my efforts. No personal information is collected.
- "Storage": Allow extension to save Extension Settings.
How to Install:
New: Added to official Chrome store now just add via https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/xda-gallery-beta/bohmnlfnbncjhpjagccfgblhcdgicdnp
Reporting Bugs:
If you'd like to report bugs then please give me the thread you had an issue with, and if you can narrow it down to an image then link to the post containing that image ( if it's working, there is a link under each image to bring you to the post. ).
What's Next:
Currently the extension will start showing images from the forum page you launched it from. Going to implement a way to jump to the beginning or specific page.
Implement scrolling upwards to load the previous pages images, this is needed for the next item.
Lots more ideas for "community" type features But gotta get the basics hammered down first!
Change Log:
3/15/2013
Added an "Advanced" options section allowing you to override the number of images and fetch all of them. ( If it doesn't work correctly on some thread blame mon5trum, he requested it )
Some bug fixes
3/9/2013
Now when viewing images in the popup you can click to view prev and next, or just use the arrow keys to navigate!
New Extension Settings page, styled to blend in and match chromes style for settings.
Setting to adjust the minimum number of images to fetch( Careful here as it wont render any images until it finds at least this number, could take awhile if you try and use on a thread that doesn't have many images ).
Setting to turn on debug mode ( Will show logging in the Chrome console. NOTE: I'd leave this disabled unless you need to troubleshoot an issue as it could slow down logic a bit )
3/7/2013
Lots of fixes and enhancements in this one.
First off, thanks to Pooley! He is an awesome guy, and very talented. Thanks to him with have a great, professional looking icon!
Aspect ratio is now respected
Added image zoom capability
Now identify images with broken links and shows in small window( as to not break scrolling functionality for now )
Images should also layout nicely in a column format
Fixed quite a few bugs( hopefully without creating new ones )
Hmmm... seems like there should be more, but I'm too lazy to look at my commit log, so just check it out
3/2/2013
NEW: Now on the official Chrome Web Store
Starting to work on the look a bit, its still pretty ugly lol... What can I say, graphic design isn't my thing, but it'll get better
1/27/2013
Pretty much a complete rewrite
Fixed loading duplicate issues
Better error handling( Will tell you when it's reached the end of the thread )
Asynchronous loading should now be working correctly
Do you find this useful? Click the Thanks button to send me some encouragement... Or if you're feeling really generous buy me a redbull to keep me going at the keyboard ( If not, no worries, it's hardly expected )

Been awhile since I updated this, but did a complete rewrite of the extension, should now be working much better. Replaced attachment with new extension and added changelog in the OP.

It doesn't work if the page contains a gif. But gifs are shown in the gallery though.
Example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38762538#post38762538. And i think sometimes it also happens if a gif is present in a user's signature.
--edit--
It's working now. Seems to be haphazard.

Ok here is the icon. first attempt. zip contains psd + png (512, 38, 19).
Will try another way as I don't see clearly the pic on 19x19 res. But it's a first try, tell me more about color, about shapes what do you eventually like to see in the icon.
FYI no active/inactive as the inactive will be the greyscaled version of the active one
OK second try
I like this one (minimalist and easely recognizable even in 19x19) what do you think ?
Also attach a zip with psd + png (512, 38, 19) ON/OFF mode

Thunder Online Kernel Repacker, Search/ROM Linking/Hotlinking
Alright Guys i know i've been quit lately and for a good reason,
over the past week an a half i've been working to make my own web based kernel repacker,
im up really late so i wont say much for now except enjoy and do your worst,
there is still some improvement i'd like to add, but since its working the way it should,
ill let you enjoy it as i continue to work on it.
Please
when using the repacker, it will ask you to fill a form,
DONT submit it empty or with false information,
the results are used to build the search feature,
However, after i approve the submission it wont appear that for that kernel image,
I will work on a version which allows everyone to repack without filling in the forum.
http://projecthunder.cu.cc/repack/
i've also have a working search function that will serve 2 purposes,
1) allow you to search for a repack
2) allows ROM Dev to link to repacks related to their ROMs
http://projecthunder.cu.cc/repack/tables.php?KDN=&KN=&KV=&RDN=&RN=&RV=&DB=HTC&DM=One+X
which is yet to be skinned
Requirement:
1) HTML5 Supported Browser (you all being XDA members should always be up to date anyway)
2) Nothing Else
FeaturesKernel Image Repack
One Upload Ever*
HotLinking
Approval System**
*Once A Kernel is uploaded once,
it will not be uploaded again as it's already on the server,
thus will make repacking that image much much faster
**RC/RD/Senior Members & Those With Repacking Threads May Contact Me To Get An Account In It
Planned FeaturesReporting System For Approvers & Everyone For Both Abusers & Mislabels
Simple Repacker Without Asking For Details
Better Hotlinking Method
Im Currently Using A Free Host Provided By RC Member Swift,
Maybe One Day I Can Get My Own Host For A More Consistent UpTime
Special Thanks To XDA Member Langer Hans Which Made Making This Much Much More Easier
Without Him Even Knowing
Also Thanks To - Swift - For The Initial Free Webhost He Provided
Last But Not Least, Thanks To GuyAdams For Providing The Current Host
Good Night ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz
Great work!

Woah, great work Thunder! I was wondering when we would see something by you
Sent from my One X running Blade v4.7.0. At a mere 217 MB, with tons of AROMA Mods and tweaks, this, is what you want.

its a "free" host provided by an RC, so i expect it to be down ever now and than
but its back on now, should someone have a better hosting service or someone makes a generous donation, ill get my own host and host it on it,
but for now, this will have to do.
Fixed Few Bugs

Only lately I'm getting some downtime,
If it persist ill get in touch, but how will it work, as I like having a domain and not a page on a site.
Just as well it might never take off :-\

Register.com was selling domains for $0.50 last week. Or get a free domain from co.cc. I get all my free hosting at 000webhost and rarely experience down times.

Currently i have full access Cpanel, which is to say the least unbeatable,
but ill see how inconsistent this gets.
just aswell, ive noticed something odd when the site goes down and i've just contacted Swift and see if my hunch is correct :fingers-crossed:

it has been a while since i used 000webhost, 5 years easily and i didnt have the best of experience with them,
just as well they're limiting me to 1.5GB which just wouldnt cut it,
lesscro sounds better, but im still not about to give up on Swift, for anything less than my own proper host.
TEASER
just finished building this,
only thing missing is login system to allow those trusted users to approve and make the whole process much faster
what you cant see is that all fields are edible, so you can edit it before you approve it

New to the Droid World

Hello world,
I just purchased an Samsung S3 but I haven't done anything to it yet because I am deciding if I want to keep it or sell it. I have always used iPhones and know how to jailbreak, tweak and customize it the way I want it but due to the ongoing battle with Apple and jailbreakers and having to wait for a jailbreak I think it's time to switch. An iPhone is nothing without a jailbreak and I am tired of the cat and mouse game.
So now I am here. I know I need to root the phone and can find useful info on this site but what I want to know are the tweaks for the droid phones just as good as the iPhone or better? Please don't be bias especially if you never owned an iPhone.
Can I customize the phone so if a friend ask to use the phone and wants to know the password I can give a dummy password? Can I create a secret account that won't show any of my apps, emails, photos, text call logs? Something similar to an iPhone app called igotchya?
Privacy is my number one concern but I would also like to add tweaks similar to what you would find in Cydia on an iPhone.
Before you rip me a new one for bringing up iPhones or Apple just note I am here to learn and not compare. Everything is foreign to to me which can lead to frustration but if I can have full access to my phone then it's worth it.
Before Apple I use to use HTC window phones like the 8525 and Fuze and came here to flash my roms.
The best way to know would be to root it and explore the different custom ROMs out there. Aosp or touchjizz . you can always revert back to fully stock if you decide to sell it.
Customizing a rooted android device is in no way comparable to a jailbreaked iPhone. Way more customisations posibilities and control over your phone hardware(CPU/internal memory)

Thanks for the reply.
I guess I am more concern about privacy. Prying eyes going through my stuff and accidentally deleting something. When my iPhone was jail broken I used a tweak called Protecti were I can lock certain apps from being launched and have a second passcode so I don't need to give up my real passcode.
The one thing I do like about the droid is how you have more options. You payed for the phone and allowed to do whatever you want with it. Unfortunately with the iPhone, Apple wants to control everything. I am really disliking Apple and waiting for the day when when the next big thing happens and Apple struggles to stay alive.
In my opinion if Samsung would make their phones feel solid instead of plastic they can really do some damage to other cell phone company's.

For the security, I'm sure you can find an app or something that will do the same thing you were used to on your iPhone. You will just need to find the app that does it check for lookout in the play store I think it will do want you're talking about. If not search security in the play store and I'm sure one of the all will suit you. Root my be needed tho. So don't be afraid to root your device and try. As I said you can easily revert back and be able to sell it after.

So the play store has tweaks such as these? I don't need to go through a different source (similar to cydia for iPhone)?
Is there anything comparable to Installous (iphone cracked apps / try before you buy)?

You can search for the .apk on Google or XDA and install it manually on your phone. You put the file.apk on your sdcard you select it from a file manager like es file explorer and it will install the app on your phone and you don't need root to install app manually.
And yes the play store has tweaks such as these and many more. And if you look on the main page of XDA-developer(not the forum) you can find apps that are not in the play store yet. So instead of using cydia, you just need Google, XDA and the play store
Android is the land of endless possibilities

Thanks for useful info,
That's cool you can just put the file on your sdcard and don't have to use a third party installer.
I guess my next stop is to buy an SIM card adapter since the iPhone 5 uses a smaller SIM card. Once installed I don't need to do anything like call AT&T, it should just work right?
Hopefully the keyboard and the auto spell corrector on the S3 is much better than the i5. I wonder if I should sell the S3 and get the S4 or do you think the S3 is better for now since the S4 just came out and is still a little buggy?
Much thanks in advance.

[TASKER] Make your QuickWindow Useful.

Hi, yesterday while i was spending my time in internet, trying to find something useful for my QuickWindow case i found this thread. http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=736141
Read ALL before complain.
The thread is in Spanish so, i will translate it and post some pics. Also i modified the files because Scenes have a weird error.
You DONT NEED ROOT. Im in Stock Rom and it works fine.
There is a "bug". If you close your Case in the HomeScreen, it wont show any notification, im working in it but i dont have time so dont expect an ETA or something. If you want it works, you can download a custom Launcher or let open any app.
Also, Notifications Go 0 even if you dont read it.
Im planning do something for facebook, tweeter, and maybe others Apps but i dont have time now.
You are COMPLETELY FREE TO MODIFY THIS. Please, share your creations if you want be nice.

Ok, lest go.
1-. Download the App " TASKER ".You can download it from Google Play. It cost 3$ ( or 3€ ) but is the best buy you can do in your life.
2-. Download This. The ZIP file contain all files that you need. I strongly recommend do a backup copy of this files.
3-. Now you will need a file explorer. Generally, your G2 should include it.
4-. Search the file Tasker. Open it and create the following 3 folders. " profiles ", " tasks ", " scenes "
5-. Now, Open the ZIP ( you can do it with an app in google play ). Copy the content of the ZIP in the 3 folders created. its obviously that " profiles " will go in " profiles ". " tasks" will go in " tasks " and " scenes " will go in " scenes ".
6-. Open Tasker. You will have again " Profiles " "Tasks" and "Scenes". Do a "click" in "Profiles" and "click" IMPORT. Search The TASKER folder and the profiles folder and IMPORT all the content.
http://imgur.com/O4rcQvE
7-. Repeat with Tasks and Scenes.
8-. If its the first time you install Tasker you will need to deactivate something.
9-. Go to preferences, Monitor and deactive the first tick. Im sorry but i dont have an english pic.
http://imgur.com/LSUmHPA
10-. Now, NEVER force close, freeze or stop TASKER. it MUST be running everytime.
11-. if you dont have the app greenify, go to TASKER, Tasks, QW and DELETE the option " hibernar ahora ".
P.S: Sorry for the bad formatting its late and im too tired.
P.S.2: Feel free to criticise, improve, or whatever you want but GIVE CREDITS to " alfcloud " user from http://www.htcmania.com/ because this guy changed your life.
Idk what I'm doing wrong? I put the 3 folders from the zip in to the tasked folder, imported all the stuff for each tab, unchecked the 1st tab in monitor, turned all the things on in profiles but nothing happens when I close or open my qw case? Any suggestions?
Kinda work.
Inconsistent though

I want to remake the entire Scene and include some extra notifications, but now i dont have time for anything that need more than 15 mins.
If you want some APP show a notif. You can copy the profile and task and adapt it for the app you want. If i have time this weekend, i'll try to do a mini guide for show your own app.
Im very sorry because i really want to do it, but my job and my family is more important. Try to understand it.
Thank you for your translation guide ! I will try to make my own notifications !!

can you share your notifications with us ?
Yes no problem, I just need a little time to set some task, all the notifications do not come up to date
[EDIT] OK I have finished, but I think you will a resolution problem.
Indeed I replaced my native résolution (480 dpi) by 400.
So I think you'll just need to resize the scene, I had already searched during some times, don't hesitate if you have any questions!
[EDIT2] I tested with original résolution there is no impact
Enjoy

Did you see some red triangles in tasker near to your tasks and profiles? That can mean there is some errors

Just got a Quickwindow case myself, and as this looks to be the most interesting thing you can do with it (at least on stock ROM), I decided to give it a go.
Apparently, the reason it's not working (at least for me in 4.4.2) is because the Quick Window Profile is looking for the application "com.lge.lockscreen.PouchLockScreen" which apparently isn't being found. I've tried to tinker myself, but I also seem to be unable to locate what the correct application should be to detect Quickwindow mode.

I managed to get this kinda working on KitKat. Stock rom. However, the issue that I have is when I open the case, the notifications stay on the screen, overlaid on everything else. The only way to clear it is to go open Tasker.
