One annoying thing about JB on the GN.. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Browser quick controls are useless in landscape mode. Trying to bring them up triggers Google Now everytime. Now I have to always use in portrait or use my left hand. Arrrrgh!

Can we get a comment section added here where people can just start new threads to make one comment and maybe let us know how they feel every day. For the rest of us, we can add posts to the correct already started threads in the general section.

I liked the old quick controls much better but one of my reasons for using them in ICS is that it reduced the lag that happened whenever the address bar would slide out. It doesn't lag in jellybean anymore so I have them off for now. I do kind of miss them though.

I agree, this is a problem!
Also I don't like how the new q controls behave. The old ones were much better.
I am thinking of switching to chrome but it is a little luggy compared to stock.
The rest of the OS is much smoother though.

I quite like the new quick controls with long-press but they're a little too sensitive, if I could wind down the sensitivity I'd be happy.
I hadn't noticed but yes, using the right ones in landscape is a bit more difficult but as long as you don't swipe at all you're good to go.

Works fine on the left side. What is the big deal?
butter and jelly please...

It is odd but as said above it works on the left n you can always rotate the phone if you want it on the right

Except the software buttons move to the right no matter which way you rotate. I guess I can get used to operating it from the left side I suppose.
I would use chrome, but at the moment it's not as smooth as the default browser. If only they would combine the smoothness and quick controls of the default browser with the rendering engine of Chrome we would have the perfect browser. Both compromise on different things right now which is strange.

Auto Rotate, slow?

Hi Guys,
I Have been using my galaxy nexus for about a day now, and I have to say that i find the auto rotate annoyingly slow. Sometimes not at all, really frustrating, some apps are smother than other but generally not great especially compared to my SGS2.
Anybody else having this issue?

This is likely to reduce accidental auto-rotations that have been a problem with some phones I've owned, like HTC Desire.
I wish it was a setting that user can change though.
I agree its annoying. I turned mine off but is there a way to turn it manual when you want it? Like a gesture or something?
I've noticed that in the videos. The Xoom does the same way but, ICS looks smoother. Like kristovaher mentioned, it may be by design.
It's just one of these things that you can't change in the stock version of Android, I am sure that in a CyanogenMod there will be options to adjust that.
Its not lag as such. Its implemented into Android as a timer so it doesn't rotate accidentally. Agreed it could be a little quicker
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
yeah the auto-rotate is not as fast as it was on the Nexus S running Gingerbread.
I guess I'll just get used to it.

that could work, although I'm guessing it's more to do with a threshold that has been applied to the actual physical rotation of the device, rather than any delay with the effect of the screen rotating.
Would be interested if anyone tries this!
Setting the transition speed unfortunately doesn't work. You don't need spare parts for it. The development section in the general Android settings has also an option to play with this parameter
Edit: btw I'm pretty sure that it can be changed by playing with the files in the /sys (not /system) directory. A lot of low level things can be changed there like backlight settings etc. My bet is that the file you wanna edit is somewhere in the /sys/class directory. Unfortunately I didn't root my device yet, so I didn't play with it yet.
What about turning animations off???
So far I like it slower. I was often annoyed by accidental reorientation due to normal movement on my Nexus S. This helps make sure the change in orientation is intentional and deliberate. I like that.

Install the MoDaCo rom, that has the tweaked the rotate.
The slow auto-rotation must be a feature of ICS. HC works the same way on the Xoom. My wife's iPad will auto-rotate at the least little movement. I prefer the HC/ICS way.
This is one of the few things that annoys me with this phone. It seems to be worse in certain apps, too. It's bad in gallery, and really bad in a gallery replacement app I use called Quickpic.

Browser Quick Controls (killer feature) shown in comparison video

I stumbled across this video and thought I'd share it. I see the person doing the comparison is making use of the the quick controls functionality of the browser. Personally, I feel the quick controls just might be what sets this browser apart from the rest and quite possibly makes this the best mobile browser out.
For those who aren't familiar with what quick controls are, he breaks it down around 5:45.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm3dCbxjeqw&feature=player_embedded
Note: To enable quick controls, go in your browser settings, and look under the "labs" section and you'll see it there.
Awesome! great feature, thanks for the heads up

Yeah I thought he did a pretty decent job of going through the browser.
I was thrilled when I put the ICS rom on my Nexus S and saw the browser quick controls. lol Ever since I used the browser on the Xoom tablet when it first came out and tried out the quick controls I was trying to find a way to bring it to my phone. Obviously, I quickly found out that wouldn't be possible. So from that point forward I've been wanting the quick controls feature. Couple the quick controls feature with the browser speed and you've got IMO the best mobile browser out there. I can't wait to try it on my GNex (when handtec eventually ships it....).

It's been a Labs feature since Honeycomb and still is which says to me it's buggy and unstable. I used on my Xoom and it made my browser flaky at times. Ics might be more stable but just keep an eye on it. If it was perfectly fine it'd just be a regular setting and not still under labs.

I've never had that feature give me any trouble at all. It seems our experiences differ here. How frequently did it give you problems? Also is there anyone with a GNex now, that is using this feature? How is it operating for you?
What kind of things can you do with quick controls? I watched the video this morning, but only remember him using it to switch tabs.

Basically lets you 1) switch tabs 2) pull up the address bar 3) access the settings menu.
The plus is they're quickly accessible when compared to the normal address bar/menus, and it lets the address bar be hidden 99% of the time to give you a larger view of the page.
I've been using it since my order arrived Saturday. Nothing out of the ordinary to report. I got spoiled to this on my Transformer and could never go back.
I will say the expanded version on the tablet with the close tab, back/forward, refresh, etc. is superior but for the screen size this version is 99% as good.
Found out about this while trying to set up Chrome Sync, and it's effing awesome. Not going back.
I just don't get it - the only time my stock Nexus launcher redraws (relaunches) is after using the browser. I can do a ton of other stuff but whenever I use the browser and load anything remotely heavy (sometimes doesn't have to be) - it has to redraw the launcher.
id personally much rather have back as a choice, but thats just me
I cannot wait for the ICS browser. It may be the second most desirable feature of ICS (first being the improved keyboard).
The one thing I hate about the current Gingerbread browser is the Bookmark. The first Bookmark tab sorts it via most visited sites, except isn't that what the second tab on top is for? It's annoying that the order gets changed in the Bookmark tab. Drives me nuts.
I really look forward to Chrome sync and the quick controls.
Yeah its odd they did this. I don't know why they didn't just use the same quick controls as my Xoom has which are much more useful.

Isn't this feature similar to what the MIUI miren browser does with its controls and the "smart full screen" option?
Don't want to say miren is better than stock, it's pretty buggy actually.
After having used my phone for a full day now, I must say this is the best browser I've used on a phone thus far, and the quick controls just set it apart. This browser is in a class of it's own.
Is there any easier way to remove tab without going to the Tab button then swipe left or right?
I know using Quick Control we can access the loaded tabs ...
so since Quick Controls doesn't have the full options like that are found on Honeycomb tablets...how do you navigate back and forward while using QCs?

Landscape typing sucks on galaxy nexus!!

This is seriously BAD. This is downright horrible.
Try it on your phone. Landscape mode typing is so jerky its almost unusable !! It is so painful. Works perfect if you hold phone straight but landscape mode....open any app or any text field ....and the typing is unbelievably bad
This is pathetic!!!!! I'm using standard unrooted galaxy nexus I think this would hspoen on all of thrm

Another "pro" thread. Landscape is great.
good day.
i have the same issue regardless if it's landscape or not. it'll just want to stay put in the center of the text box and if i try to move the screen over to see what i'm typing it'll just automatically switch back by itself. that and if i press somewhere wanting to resume typing at that particular point, it'll either not register or the pointer will appear in a completely different place. i found that switching to a.i. type keyboard helps improve things slightly.

Are you referring to the terrible lag when typing in landscape mode?
If so, that is scheduled to be fixed in an upcoming update:
code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22432
Sorry, no linky for 5 more posts!
Not sure if this exactly what your looking for but I came to the galaxy nexus at launch and was originally on an iphone 3gs for the past 2 years the keyboard was very snappy in landscape which is one thing I liked because I text rather quickly.
However, when I started texting in landscape mode on the galaxy nexus I got horrible lag between depressing characters with the stock android keyboard and noticed that it seemed to simultaneously occurr with the vibration feedback from the keyboard. I went into the settings and disabled the vibration and the keyboard works as it should. Although I now have decreased functionality until a fix is released the keyboard is very responsive with the vibration feature disabled.

Go to your settings, "Language and Input", and uncheck "Spelling Correction" at the top. Got rid of all my lag but not sure if it works for others.

+1 to two things mentioned previously: 1) disable Spelling Correction (the most important and significant thing you can do), and 2) disable the vibration. I've no idea why - in fact it's probably placebo effect - but disabling it made my typing appear to be a smoother experience with less mistakes and more smoothness. Might seem to help you.
Fixed in 4.0.3 according to Google.

Galaxy nexus browser experience

I come from HTC sensation, T-Mobile galaxy s 2, galaxy s 2 I9100, international galaxy note and I believe the galaxy nexus has the overall best browsing experience. It loads pages SUPER FAST!!! Flash content loads up in no time, scrolling is very smooth so is pinch to zoom ( not as smooth as the galaxy s 2 but can't complain), the resolution and the screen size is also awesome. I love the lab feature when u get rid of the address bar and use the quick controls I think its very intuitive. For a phone with " lower " specs than the competition I say the nexus kick some serious ass in the browsing department. Your thoughts?

I agree. The BEST thing about this phone is the 720p screen. Mhl adapter to my TV and watch Netflix, or flash videos on the big screen!
I always use Dolphin, but I'm tempted to start using stock browser.
WAIT get ics browser+ . Same as stock but with added goodies. Quick controls i couldnt live without no more! I beg you to give it a go! Btw the developer is BEANSOFT. Hope this helps
Forgot to say it in my OP but the only thing that bothers me sometimes in the browser is when you double tap to zoom sometimes instead of zooming, it clicks on a link or pic or whatever is on the page. But yeah, excellent browser!
Chrome beta is nice too, just no flash.

I haven't been able to use anything but Chrome since switching to the GNex. The way it handles tabs blows all other Android browsers out of the water, in my opinion. Add to that the ability to sync your open web pages across all your devices! I find that I do not miss the lack of flash; if I absolutely need it I will fire up ICS Browser +

I do like the concept of the chrome browser, how you can switch pages by swiping through them is very nice, also the tab management looks cool. But for some reason chrome, for me, isn't as responsive as the stock browser. When I'm trying to pinch to zoom or scroll through the page it takes a couple of second before registering my gestures. As far as ICS browser + it's pretty much the same as stock but with more features. While its cool that it adds more quick controls I think it's annoying that they take a big space when u activate it. Sometimes you just wanna scroll and they appear taking a big chunk of the page. I personally prefer the stock browser but who am I to say which is best for others.

Thats what i use (read my other post) how good are quick controls!
When I first got the phone I decided I was going to stick with a lot of the stock options to begin with and see how they fared, and I'm still using the browser. I gave Chrome a try briefly, and may have stayed on it, but then changed the DPI to 240 which it doesn't like, so I'm back on the stock.
It's smooth and responsive, and I'm a huge fan of the quick menu enabled in the labs section. My brother got a Nexus recently, and one of the first things I did for him was to set up the quick menu options for him in the browser.
Yeah is good. The only thing I don't like is the bookmarks, is all random not like the htc browser that you can sort by mostly used.
The ics + browser quick controls handling of multiple tabs is unmatched. Even chrome doesn't do it for me.
Plus chrome is not as smooth at all.
I love Chrome Beta, and it keeps getting better. No flash is a non-issue; Adobe officially dropped support for mobile flash last November. They're going to instead focus on HTML5-- something that Chrome *does* support, and quite well I might add.

Picked up my Note 2 today. Have some questions and concerns

I picked up my Note 2 today at a local sprint store. They were only given 5 and once I got mine they had 2 left. This was 20 minutes after they opened.
I have a couple questions and concerns reuarding the phone that im hoping someone can help me answer.
1. Is there a way to stop the volume from decreasing whenever i plug it into my car? The volume will always go down to half and its kind of annoying.
2. When using the keyboard to type messages, if i spell a word wrong and hit space it wont autocorrect it. Is this a feature Samsung left out? Im so used to it on my evo, i feel like i have to keep looking at what im writing to make sure i dont misspell something.
3. If im in the browser and zoom in on something it wont adjust to fit the page like the HTC EVO did. Is this also something samsung didnt include?
The main concern I have with the phone is the 3g data speeds. I am coming from the original Evo 4g and although Sprint isnt known to have the greatest speeds I never had a problem downloading an application. Today it took an hour to download myfitnesspal from the play store. I tested the speeds on speedtest.net and I was getting 33kbps down and 5kbps up. My girlfriend who also has an Original EVO 4g was getting 300kbps down and 170kbps up. Still not the greatest speed but alot better than what i was getting on the Note 2. Both phones were in the same spot and the same time. I did the test a number of times and always had the same outcome.
Thanks everyone. So far I am loving this phone and both the hardware and software are great!!

That is due to one of the headphone options to limit the intensity of volume so it doesn't damage your ears. You'll find the option it in the sound settings, after you disable it in won't change your volume to half anymore.

I have a new Note 2, and I'm also new to Android, so I've been posting different things I encounter with the phone.
My experience with the keyboard is one of the things I posted, copied in here.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The default Samsung keyboard on the Galaxy Note 2 is a sleeper.
Samsung included Swiftkey Flow, which allows gesture-based typing, like Swype. The more I use it the more I like it, and it has auto-suggest and auto-correct.
The number row at the top is pretty great, too, the large screen allows it all to fit. The auto-suggestions appear above the number row.
Samsung also included the handwriting keyboard, for the S-Pen. The handwriting recognition works really well, and I'm coming up to speed with it.
The main points to remember about the keyboards are these:
- auto-suggest and auto-correct function in both tapping and handwriting modes.
- in tapping mode the transition between tapping and gesturing is seamless, but if you try to use both modes within a word a space is automatically inserted.
- in tapping mode auto-correct functions only while using gestures. If you're tapping and not gesturing you have to choose among the suggestions instead of relying on auto-correct. I'm learning the cases where it's important to me to have auto-correct do its thing, like when typing "I'm". If I type it in in tapping mode, it ends up as "Im" unless I choose the auto-suggestion with the apostrophe. It's better instead to use gesture mode for "I'm" as the auto-correct will do the right thing and use the apostrophe. As I mentioned, the transition from tapping to gesturing is seamless.
- quick-punctuation and quick-capitalization functions are missing
completely. People who don't use gestures and people who've never spent time with an IOS keyboard ( and many who have ) don't get this.
I am starting to really like this keyboard. My only real gripes are the lack of auto-correct in tapping mode and the lack of quick-capitalization and quick-punctuation, but they are mitigated by long-presses.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Someone else mentioned in the thread the Jelly Bean Keyboard, and it really is an excellent keyboard, I discovered it with my Galaxy S3 and initially installed it on the Note 2. But I'm not willing to give up the handwriting recognition, so back to the stock keyboard I went.
The stock keyboard doesn't do everything, but it has its good points.
Cheers,
-John

There is a similar setting in advanced settings. To get true reflow you will have to use a different browser. You can thank Apple for this.

I also came from the Evo4G, and the auto adjust feature you speak of is a HTC Sense feature. I noticed this early on after using others phones and tablets. Although a small feature for those that have had it and lost it we all know how big of a thing it really is. Still don't know why Google hasn't implemented this within current builds of Android yet.

Apple is why. Htc will eventually have to remove it as well.

Can you explain what Apple has to do with it, references? AFAIK, HTML can be rendered any which way the (User Agent, that is) browser wants - that's the point of markup language.

Text/browser reflow after zooming(what the op is refering to on HTC phones...similar to word wrapping in excel lol) is patented by Apple. Samsung removed it from devices last year. HTC will eventually do so as well.
Its been all over the web for nearly 2 years...you are a smart guy you can find it
The only way to get it to work on samsung phones is to, after zooming in to the size that you want, you have to double tap the screen an additional time to enable text reflow.

Hmm, that'd contradict TechRadar.com's review [/reviews/phones/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-note-2-1093688/review/5#articleContent]:You can have the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 reformat pages when you zoom in but it doesn't do this by default, which is slightly annoying.
In fact, you have to go into the advanced section of the settings menu to dig this little gem out, which we weren't overly impressed with having to do.
Lots of people won't be aware of this - and that could lead to a second rate experience for no reason at all.
