I added an experimental feature to my free Earpiece app which lets you almost mute the camera click and autofocus on stock 2.3 for the E4GT. Doesn't need root. I only tested on EL29. I am curious if it works on other OS versions and devices, but the E4GT is the only Android phone I have.
To use this feature, run Earpiece, press MENU, and then select the quiet camera option. In my experience, the autofocus can be heard quietly but the camera click is only audible if your ear is right up to the device.
I am curious if this works on anything other than E4GT with stock 2.3. If it doesn't work for you but you want it to, get Android Log Collector, take a photo with the stock camera app, go to log collector, and email me the log (arpruss at gmail dot com).
Earpiece does a few other audio-related things, like automatically switching between speaker and earpiece in phone calls based on proximity, boosting audio, and allowing you to listen to media through the earpiece speaker (e.g., so you can listen to radio without earphones in public, looking like you're just talking on the phone).
Thank you for this app. I ve been looking for an app like this for a long time. I wish it could mute the camera completely but thank you...

No surprise there. Send me the click log as per my post above and I'll see if I can make it work.
But anyway doesn't CM have its own option for turning off the camera sound?
Related
Is there any way to turn off the shutter sound for the camera? It even sounds when the system sound is switched off?
i noticed if the "media" volume is set to 0 then the camera shutter sound is also off
so if youre in the camera app, just use the volume rocker and set it to nothing - i had this by accident and noticed there was no shutter sound
once i put it back up a bit i could hear the camera shutter
there should also be another way if you rooted your phone to delete the camera.ogg file somewhere - but pretty sure you wont have it at all anymore if you take that approach
I use tasker to set media volume to 0 when in the camera app

If you have root,
1. Go to /system/media/audio/ui (I think that's the directory, I don't have my GN on me)
2. Rename camera-click.ogg to whatever you wish. Change the extension, whatever.
3. ???
4. Profit!
Thanks guys. Ive gone down the rename route.
Wow, all I have to do is hold volume down until it mutes.
No "bleep" sound.
Root? Why??
Because we like to use our phones to the max potential?
Why bother with volume changing when it can be permanently fixed, quite easily?

What's the obsession with the camera sound, anyway? Sneaking photos of chick's asses?
Besides, if someone heard the sound anyway, they would never associate it with a camera shutter.
People are weird. If it's that single moment that requires silence, just hold the volume down button for 2 seconds. Take photo, spend another 2 seconds.
Or I guess if you are constantly taking creeper photos, then root and enjoy?
In some countries, it's illegal to mute camera' shutter sound.

Your pervert mind will think of perverted uses.
I personally find the camera beep one of the more annoying sounds possible.
And I don't like wasting my time.
Hi all,
I almost put 2-3 days to investigate Apps for call recording on my SGSII. I installed many Apps on it, however, none of them seems working.
Bottom line is apparently, there is hardware limitation in Android which prevents accessing the incoming voice. and most of the programs work when voice is coming from the speaker.
This seems ridiculous! I mean, come on! I had Nokia 5 years ago and had nice Apps working perfectly for call recording with crystal clear quality.
If there is not such an App and if Android world is unable to perform such an easy task, I will definitely, switch back to Nokia.
Please let me know if you know any WORKING program with good quality without putting the phone on speaker.
Thanks for your time.

Their own website states that the speaker phone must be turned on. So I will keep looking Phone call recording
To record phone calls, start recording, and put the speaker on during the call. Please beware that this doesn't work on all devices.
To record incoming calls, uncheck Pause on incall in the advanced settings, start recording, wait for a call, and put the speaker on. Warning: this may cause certain phones to crash when the incoming call arrives." Need something for a sgh-t989
there are 2 fine solutions mate, that already works for me on stock rom (root required) or cm7:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.killermobile.totalrecall.s2.market
or
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skvalex.callrecorder (pointed by nilsido, too)
both works wonderful.
Can't seem to get it back. Not sure why it's gone missing. But all volumes are turned up and my camera no longer makes a noise when I take photos. Any ideas?

When your in the camera app then use the volume rocker to turn up the camera sound.
Sent from a phone...
Make sure you aren't on silent mode, since having that turned on suppresses the camera sound.
Done both of those things. It's not in silent, the ringer goes and message tones go. But the camera doesn't... odd...
If you are running AOKP, there is a setting in Sounds that turns it off. You may have turned it off accidentally.
forget that up skirt photos all day........j/k
I'd try a simple restart of your Galaxy Nexus.
I had this issue a while ago on 4.0.2 before I rooted and installed a custom ROM.
Ironically, I ended up disabling the camera sound manually anyways...
Doh! It had been muted by an app, which I'd then uninstalled. And, of course, you don't have access to System Volume...
Realised I can have it managed by Setting Profiles so all good now
I have no idea how long this has been going on because I've just recently noticed it, but when I open any app to use the camera, my phone makes a click noise, not from the speakers, but the actual phone itself makes a click noise, I have no idea how to fix this, it's not that bothersome as I'm rarely ever using my camera anywhere where its quiet enough to hear it, but it's obnoxious to hear, does anybody know what could be causing this or is anybody at least having the same problem?
Well, I have same problem as you on my Samsung Galaxy S4. Any ideas?
Calm down, all phones with Autofocus make this sound. Your device is working properly.

my M8 Developers Edition is silent opening the camera app
I think it's more audible on some phones than on others, just by randomness, but I've had several phones of different models that make the click noise and it's never affected performance or camera functionality. It's normal.
Many users already got the update to lollipop.
This thread is meant to collect bugs, which were introduced with lollipop.
Many people didn't get the update yet, it would be helpful for them to know if the rom runs well or the update should be skipped.
So if you encountered any problems please report here.
Thank you!

I personally don't like because they removed xLOUD . Now volume is too low.
Viper4android won't let you make calls, a reboot happens if you try to call someone

Not a big deal as it was just a gimmick, but the notification LED doesn't light up when browsing through the pictures in the album app.
It's alot better than kit kat except for the icons and loud speaker

Also found that, but when I turn on "ClearAudio+" (Settings > Sound & notification > Audio settings) the speaker gets louder.
I hope I've helped.

I have some, Microphone is too low, other party cant hear a thing. even I disabled noise canceling mic but still problem exists.
2 - when someone calls, the notification light goes crazy and turns on and off very fast. and sometimes ringtone doesn even play.
3- earpiece volume is too low too
Thus far all I am aware of was the WiFi bug. I had to re-flash lollipop three times to get my WiFi to work ( updated through PC companion)
The only bug I found is that when you turn on Ultra STAMINA Mode and you turn it back off, all the apps you've previously disabled get enabled, so you have to disable them again. Otherwise, I'm having killer perfomance and battery life (4hs of SOT, with KK I had less than 3 and with every Lollipop AOSP-based ROM I got a bit more than 3) so I'll just ignore the Ultra STAMINA Mode and it's all good.
I found that volume levels are loud enough for me, perhaps it's because I have not been using stock for a while.
Every time I make a phone call, the in-call volume is set to 50%.
I increase it and the moment the screen turns off as I put the phone next to my ear, it'll stay at 100 for a while and again fall back to 50!
In case of whatsapp calls, I can change it to 100 but it will fall to 50 every time, won't stay there even for a second.
Started facing this problem when I updated to Lollipop, no such issues on KitKat.
I'm using the US FTF on an Indian phone.
Please help as I like the Lollipop update, it has increased the battery life a lot.

No skip/fast-forward in videos
If I try to skip to 2:30 for example in a video (with Chrome), the video just gets stuck and doesn't play anymore. But if I let it play from start without skipping, everything is just fine.
I googled this and it can be possible that you have to disable NuPlayer in the developers options, but that doesn't seem to work for me?
I hope someone can help or knows a workaround to make skipping work!
EDIT: examples for this behavior Here: download.wavetlan.com/svv/media/http/http-mp4.htm
