I want to upgrade my phone soon but I can't make up my mind as to what to get. I like the gs3, but I don't know if it is good enough. I have read some rumors about a new lg device at the end of the year, the ls970. It is rumored to have a quad core snapdragon s4 processor and everything. What do you guys think?

I'm on the G S III now...and its pure love. You couldn't ask for a better device, personally.
Any other opinions? I'm in the same boat. I've pretty much decided against the Evo 4G LTE - it just isn't great enough. I'm leaning towards the S III but am wondering if I should wait for the next best thing.
The Evo 4G lte is right out for me too. The non removable battery is a no go for rom switchers. The s3 seems really nice but the plastic body and dual core are a little questionable. That LG LS970 has everything. I a better display, quad core s4, and a 13 mp camera.

I'm not due for an upgrade for about a year, so for me it's going to be a waiting game regardless.
I personally would wait, only because the US was shafted on the specs by getting a dual core processor instead of the quad core that it has overseas. The EVO LTE looks nice but as others have said, there is no removable battery so that takes away a bit from flash-aholics.
If you're trying to get a new feel for the S3's OS, I've heard good things about Mazdarider's remICS ROM (I have yet to try it, but plan to soon).
Get Mazdarider's remICS ROM
I was about to post the same thing Jaxp3r said, so I'll just reiterate...
If you aren't sure whether or not you want the gs3, just try out Mazdarider's remICS rom in the development threads.
I have been using it for almost a week now....LOVE it.
Depends on all you want to use, as I know HBO GO/Netflix/Hulu Plus aren't working on it.
But most everything else is...and it's so smooth.
Definitely recommend it for people who are considering the GS3.
Thanks! Does anyone know if the US gs3 is any slower than the international one? I want the quad core s4 but I also want to upgrade as soon as possible. Is LG any good at making phones now?

The G S III is lagless; I've had mine since 21 June, and its still flying. The quad and dual core version handle roughly the same, but the quad does have the slight advantage in the gpu department due to the exynos chip.
I wasn't planning on upgrading, but my 1 year old shattered the screen on my EVO, so I got a SIII. It's very snappy and easy to root, although development as far as ROM's ect is just starting. The 3G is defiantly alot faster and the thing reboots almost as fast as it would take my EVO just to get going again after turning off airplane mode. Good luck whatever u decide.

I would hold off if I were you. Samsung phones or cheap made. Feels like fisher price made it. Lg isn't much better. Unless they changed something, lte networks don't work well with quad-core CPUs which is why we only get the dual-core models. Not to mention the gs3 is just plain ugly.

The GS3 is solidly built, despite looks. Actually like the polycarbonate body, it keeps the weight down, and still solid. In my opinion, the GSIII looks more refined, and it was designed for the the screen to be the focal point, and it is. In addition, one reason besides weight reduction for the polycarbonate body was to reduce signal loss.

so i'm assuming your replacement phone arrived? anyway, what's the word on the ROM development over there on the SGIII? was looking for AOKP or CM9 and don't set them. are their plans that you know of?
Had to return the S3
I pre-ordered the S3 and had to return it because of poor signal quality. I was upgrading from an Evo 4g and the S3 wouldn't work in some of the places I live and work. The S3 is phenomenal, but it constantly dropped calls or was roaming where I never had issues before. The FTC has mandated that phone manufacturers limit the antennae strength, so I couldn't see how this would improve. So I am back to my Evo and sorry I couldn't make the S3 work for me...
I've read good reviews about the Samsung Galaxy S 3,i was thinking of upgrading to the LTE,but i'm not hearing anything good about it,so i might be going for the Galaxy myself.
Yah the LTE is no good for chronic rom flashers, as the battery is non- removable. The s3 sounds really good and the reviews back that up. I am just wondering if I buy the s3 if it will have as much rom support at the og evo. Also the plastic, no matter how high quality(polycarbonate), is just a little cheap looking.

No beats because they are only optimized for crap headphones. Once you start (I know its not the best quality... but its better than any crap headphones I can buy) streaming to your done up car stereo, that can handle REAL audio quality... then you don't want any help at all.
Just today I discovered lows I never knew existed on one song because I'd never played it in my car.
Not to mention beats are just another brand grabbing money.

Money is always the reason.
If someone were to buy my phone for a decent price, I'd upgrade.
Other than my 2 years between upgrades being up, the things that would make me upgrade would be:
Much faster processor (better than Qualcomm S4)
720p non-pentile display
Overall size not significantly larger than t989
2gb ram
Most importantly for me: DAC as good as Wolfson
And nothing missing the t989 has. I'm extremely happy with my S2.

You hit the nail on the head with the wolfson dac. That things kicked SO MUCH ASS with my epic and nexus. Also I'd take a quad core s4 SoC over a quad exynos any day. 10 bucks says quad core s4 ass rapes the quad exynos when released. The dual core s4 krait SoC is the second fastest SoC out behind the quad exynos.

But to answer the question the next nexus will make me upgrade. Having already been an ex nexus s owner I've experienced how much better the dev support was on that device. Worlds ahead. I had aokp on my nexus last year.. with the same exact features aokp milestone 6 has and more. With the nexus you could raise the wolfson dac 5 decibels above its stock setting for some AMAZING sound processing and you could tweak the amoled screens brightness contrast and colors with all with voodoo sound. I NEED that back in my life. Call me insane but I've considered taking the huge performance hit and going back to my old nexus s because of how amazing the benefits are over this t989.

Truthfully, this. I know we're all here cause we care about benchmarks and the latest software, but I can't think of anything I want to do on this phone that it can't deliver.
I'm pretty happy with my phone now too. One of my friends just got an s3 & I got to play with it for a while last night, and I can honestly say I was NOT blown away. I ran some benchmarks on it and my phone either came out ahead or VERY close on each test. I'm sure it's probably all due to software, but still. I thought the screen on mine looked better too, honestly. I could see the pixels more clearly on his even though it's higher-res. I'm perfectly happy with the t989's performance, the only thing that could make me upgrade would be a significantly larger display since I'm a size queen, lol... I've heard that the Note will be coming to T-Mo this month, so that's what I'm saving my pennies for
I agree if the nexus came out for tmo I'd hop on it quick!

Nothing.
I don' t NEED the latest greatest, BUT, ONE THING that would make me upgrade, a camera capable of shooting over 200dpi, NOT the 72dpi garbage we're being given.
Otherwise, the SG2 is an EXTREMELY capable phone and they (manufacturers) are just tossing little bones to try and get people to ugprade and keep up with the Jones'..
....forget it, no thanks.
Saving my money.
I don't understand why people will sell there galaxy S III for the nexus 4. Galaxy S III comes with a with micro sd slot, bigger display, better front facing camera, and LTE.
I understand that the LG nexus is a nexus phone and always get update faster, wireless charging, and quad core. But I don't think it still outweighs the SIII. I think the SIII is still superior.
For those people that don't have either phone yes it be more difficult to choose mainly because the Nexus 4 Price is amazing for what it offers. but for those people with SIII how is this even debatable.
Is there something im missing?
much better processor. hspa+ 42meg compatible. no bloatware. possibly a better screen. wireless charging. I think you pretty much answered your own question. lol. not having lte isnt a huge deal breaker for me since I am near wifi almost always. Tradeoff is the 4 will probably have outstanding battery life. 16 gig is enough storage for me.

CPU is a quad core which is nice I agree but most the stuff on android don't utilize it, so its pretty pointless until later. No bloatware, we can already use custom roms or titanium to get rid of it. Not sure what to say about the screen I never seen it personally not going to judge it either. Wireless charging is cool I guess, but I doubt it charges faster then a direct connection. We can toggle off LTE and get pretty amazing battery life with the SIII both devices are both the same size battery. I agree16 gb is enough for me, but I like the fact that the SIII allows us to add more storage if we ever choose to. Maybe its because its new and its over hyped, i must admit at first I was like I want it. But I really thought about it and I realize its not worth it.

LTE is great. Those that say its "not ready for prime time yet" must not have it in their area or haven't tried it yet. I'd love to get the N4 but 21mbps HSPA on ATT in San Diego nets me all of 1mbps down and that's a no go. If its 42 mbps then maybe.

+1 no Lte no way,16gb no where near enough space for me, shoot my 32gb sd card is almost full, no bloat not even an issue can be easily removed with titanium backup, my s3 dual core/2gb ram loads everything just fine, in my opinion I have yet to see another android manufactures phone screen that looks better than the s3, I have a nexus 7 and screen looks washed out compared to my s3, only other phone worth considering selling s3 for right now is the note 2 if you can deal with the size.

1- I need 32g minimum
2- Its made by LG
3- Glass on the the back ? WTF ! I hate scratches.

Lol. First to get updates always makes me laugh. Hours after source is released which is when the nexus line gets their updates I have ROMs released for whatever device I own. So I guess in a way I'm first to get updates too.
1.) Its made by LG. That says enough I would think. I can most here all the complaints a month or two after releases about this not working, this is broken, etc..
2.) Better screen? Not sure how you can state this unless youve personally held the phone in your hand. Spec sheets arent always as they seem . Just remember which company is known for producing the best screens out there.
3.) It really all boils down to personal preference either way. But I'm sure we've all learned that newer isn't always better.
The only reason I'm considering it is because of the price. I would love the freedom of being eligible for an upgrade because att will bend over backwards to keep you. Before I upgraded to the gs3 I was considering moving to Verizon and att pretty much gave me $50 off my bill for the next 6 months and sold me the gs3 for $99.
But without a micro SD card I don't see no need to switch

I'm sure it is a great device, I don't think Google would sully the nexus name with a bad piece of hardware, but the reputation that lg has is not the best in the game.

I'd have to agree with the few that have noted LG - enough said. They have never been the brand I look to for phone tech - Samsung, HTC and Motorola are the only ones to consider.. The few LGs I've used/played with have been less than impressive.
Addition: Google has stated that they are releasing multiple Nexus devices, so if I were to give up my S3, I'd wait for the next Motorola or Samsung device.
I find it silly that people would sell their GS3 for this Nexus 4. No extra storage, no removable battery, no lte, no thanks.
It's great for anyone that doesn't live under LTE coverage and can't get out of their contract/don't want to upgrade and sign another contract.
I also find it funny that these same people who are praising the Nexus 4 are the same ones that knock the iphone (remember when the 4s came out?) Heavy on the fact that it doesn't have a removable battery, no expandable storage and no LTE. All of a sudden it's cool now? Get out of here...
Lg has crappy software support but with this being a nexus that's no longer an issue. Samsung is taking forever just to release 4.1.1 do y'all realistically see Samsung pushing out 4.2 this year? Even then we would wait for att also. There's not doubt that the phone will get this update eventually with cyanogen.
+1 on no chance of getting it because it doesn't have micro sd or removable battery. I could probably handle the battery, but not the lack of micro sd.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I would be willing to go out on a limb and give LG a try for a Nexus device but...no removable SD is a complete deal breaker for me. Cloud storage is not a good substitute for local storage yet. And 8GB or 16GB just isn't cutting it anymore. I hope the SGS4 has a 32 & 64 GB version with removable storage. I love my 50GB dropbox (thank you Samsung) but it just isn't the same as direct attached storage.

Technologically, it is pretty much undeniable that the screen is better. It can't produce as much vibrancy, but it is so much better on color preciseness. I don't notice it that much on my S3, but when I stick it next to a relative's One X it's pretty obvious that the whites aren't white and some other colors are slightly off as well. In day to day use, I don't care. But, seriously... dat screen...
Hi there,
So my question is, what do you think of the nexus 4?
Personally i think in the front it looks ferocious but in the back part, it looks like shiny and LGfab (disgusting) style, they should put a mirror in there also.
Also, do you think that the rumors of a GN2 or a GN+ will become true?
Plz god YES.
I think nexus phones HAVE to be from HTC or (now) samsung!!!
Will I buy it!?
Yes, cause its google's so the expectation can be above the sky! I dont think that it is better than our beloved GNexus.
Thank you
I personally think it looks fantastic. But to each his own. I've always had Samsung phones including both Nexus' made by them. Although I wish Samsung had another run with it Lg isn't stopping me from buying the nexus 4.

Thanks for the laugh. This is the one and only. LG Google Nexus⁴.
Take it or leave it. The "GNex+" is the Touchwiz NatureUX Samsung Galaxy Premier. It just simply has the gut of the GNexus smashed into a Touchwiz phone.
IMO the N⁴ is the most beautiful Nexus made so far. Finally a Premium feeling device. And iPhone 4S has a shiny apple logo smacked right on the middle of the back, still a best sellermad:Nexus should be). So yeah.

How can anyone say without touching one? The phone hasn't even been released yet. No regular users (or even reviewers) have had quality time with it.
As for the GNex+ or GN2, those phones don't exist and never will exist.
I know I'm probably speaking blasphemy here, but the only two attractive features of the Nexus 4 are the Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB of LPDDR2, and honestly, Android is so piss-poor at managing multi-core and RAM that those specs won't make it any faster than an iPhone 5 or any of the upcoming WP8 devices until, I'm gonna just guess here, but probably Android 5 or 5.1.
Hard truth.

Me, too.
I think putting a quad-core in is a stupid idea unless you severely underclock it. A good dual-core S4 like the HTC One S (which performs better than the quad-core One X in most situations due to the smaller resolution) would have been largely sufficient. Thumbs up for the memory upgrade, though.
I remain doubtful w.r.t. the IPS screen. I'm the first to admit that the Super AMOLED in our Galaxy Nexus has wonderful contrast, homogeneity and sharpness, but the gamut + default color profile suck and there is hella ghosting. I hope the new screen will be an improvement.
It's good that they managed to fit a 2100 mAh battery in there but if it comes at the expense of not being able to carry backup batteries, then I don't like it. I always have a spare battery when travelling and it would feel quite wrong for me to use a monolithic phone. Bleh.
Still no micro-SD slot though it was one of the many complaints about the Galaxy Nexus.
Europe is quite slow with true 4G deployment so why no 42Mbps DC-HSPA+?
What about the build quality of other LG phones? How are they?

Um u could just buy an external battery that charges it. Like how iphones do it. You charge the battery, and u connect it to the Port and it charges. So that is not an excuse why someone wouldn't want to upgrade.

This is a stupid regret full buyer of LG. I have a few words to say. Whatever they did to this, will be awesome. Why? Google shall support it in software and LG does the hardware...
Now Let me tell you this. LG promised my phone(Optimus Black) ICS at the third quarter of this year. Guess what? Sorry, we still don't have any updates of the ICS. UP TILL NOW. So, u really should buy it LG has everything good except user support. And now, Google collaborates with LG and that solves everything!

Android isn't the only culprit that can't manage multi-core, we've had single core for so long that getting proper dual-core optimisation will take at least another 2-3 years.
The jump from dual-core to quad-core was a much smaller leap than from single-core to dual-core.
The truth is that most apps don't scale well.

I think that Google picked lg. I wonder if Google has their own forum, where they make threads wondering if their customers are retarded? Come on, the phone isn't even out yet. Any complaint has been refuted a dozen times in any of these dozens of threads. Google birthed the magic box (gnex) everyone here loves so dearly, and now they made a new one. I apologize for my bluntness, but it's ****ing GOOGLE, and I'm gonna go ahead and presume that they known how the hell to oversee their flagship device's production. The phone is probly awesome. Buy it, don't, or make your own phone.

Why would Google make that....

If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
I like how it looks and i think IPS screen will look gorgeous, but why would i want to switch from my Galaxy Nexus? Performance is still snappy, dev support is amazing.
And i've ordered new housing for my phone for 20 bucks and it looks like new now. So i think i'll stick with it for another 6 months at least.
Have the GS3. I love it. Best phone I've ever had. I'm getting the itch though. I was seriously considering N4. Reviews dont seem to be as positive as I hoped, particularly from those coming from GS3. Which made me look at the Note 2. I love that phone. But is it too big? I don't think it is but I also have the N7, so do I even need the bigger screen? I rarely use my GS3 for anything other than phone calls and texts. Am I wasting my money? I'm thinking I am...but not sure. Anyone else considering either of these phones?

IMO it's either the s3 or note2. The nexus only has 16 gb of storage with no chance of increasing, has a fragile back that will crack if dropped, and is made by lg which hasn't made many great phones. The camera is only average and also has a halo haze and its not that much faster in real world tests. As for the note, only you can decide if its too big, other than that its actually a little better than the s3.
I've pretty much ruled out the N4 at this point. I'm going to check out the Note 2 tomorrow. If I get the note would that replace my N7? Enough to give me an excuse for getting N10??

I don't wanna start a flame war and I'm not trying to diss you but I'm just curious as to were you've been getting your info from. From all the people that have gotten the phone I haven't heard them say anything of what you just posted.
From all the reviews I have read, they say it's very smooth, the camera is very good, but not as good as the S3. The back is fragile but not as fragile as people seem to believe. The hardware is very good even though its by LG (it's pretty much an Optimus G) which is a very good phone by the way.
Oh yeah and the screen on that is much better than the S3. I believe the NOTE 2 has the same screen type as the S3 (correct me if I'm wrong)
The only thing that I really see as a downside is the damn storage. I just can't believe Google thinks that 16gb is enough now days. Even though there is the cloud, carriers restrict you on data.
Overall if you just use your phone for text and call I would go with the N4, since storage isn't a priority for you. I'm sure everyone prefers the pure Google experience with timely updates. Plus it's cheap without a contract.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
You bring up some valid points...especially that I'm only using my phone for calls and texts...N4 would be perfect for that. Pure Google...would love that. I guess I was hoping I'd use my phone for a little more. Hence Note 2. As far as the screen, I hear the AMOLED is too saturated with "fake" color. I love that screen to be honest. Fake colors or not, i think they are beautiful. I've yet to see N4 in person...or Note 2. Tomorrow I'm going to the T-Mobile store..hopefully they have both. Note 2 and GS3 both have AMOLED screens.

I'm actually getting ready to switch to a Note 2 on Verizon as soon as it comes out. I love my S3, but I really want that huge screen, and extra battery life.
I've been with T Mobile for over 10 years, and their customer service is great, but I really want more reliable and consistent coverage. I'm actually rolling the dice on not being able to flash custom ROMs(or just having limited development) in exchange for a better network and LTE.
There's no way I would go with an N4, and that's only because of the 16 gigs of storage. I have a 16 gig S3 and had a 16 gig external SD card, and I still ended up having to upgrade to a 64 gig card. But if your not big into music, movies or games, then you probably don't have to worry about that.

Why would custom ROMS be limited? Is it Verizon or the Note 2 in general?

I heard VZW has locked bootloader and possibly hasn't been unlocked yet, could be wrong though

N4 is a great device in my opinion. I love the vanilla Android and assurance of updates.
However, a lack of a removable battery and expandable storage is a big grippe to me. I like having the option to increase my storage capacities.
If you're worried about the size of the Note II, simply pick one up at the T-Mobile store or anywhere they would carry one. It's definitely a large device, it felt kind of awkward to me, but then again so did the GS3 when I first got it.
The N4 has the best price to performance ratio of any phone out there today, I believe.
That's a huge sweet spot to me.
I think that you'd be happy either way. All of these phones are great and should last you a while.

Locked bootloader and even if it gets unlocked, my understanding is that there is less development on Verizon LTE phones. Might just have to do some research on porting my own ROM's, but I really think I could get used to running TW and just using a different launcher. Once we get root, we can at least do a few mods and use root apps.

I like the note 2, its a very nice phone very fast, my coworker bought it and he loves it, I wish the s3 had the quad core processor like the euro did, that would make it even better. I kinda feel as if I got a gs2 with a bigger screen. If all you are going to do is calls and text then the note 2 is overdoing it. I would stick with the s3. I love the phone and can't wait to see what's next from samsung.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I presume you have the money to upgrade. But let be honest, the N4 and Note 2 is not that different in term of overall quality compare to S3. I think you should wait till summer or so since by then something beastly and different will come out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but very few apps take advantage of dual core processing at the moment (let alone quad core) and the 2 cores on the US version are pretty fast (faster IIRC 1 for 1).
Hell tons of applications still come out for Windows that aren't multithreaded and multicore/multiprocessor systems have been around for many years now.
hardware wise
note 2>s3>n4
reality wise
s3>note 2>n4
Now that I've seen the S4 and actualy got my hands on it and played with it for a little bit at the Samsung section in Best Buy, I actually think I now WILL be getting the S4 after previously thinking I was not gonna get it. Anyone else?

Not really since there's not much difference only slightly bigger screen and quad core all features are most likely to be ported to the s3. If I were to upgrade I would look into a phone like the HTC one or something but the s4 would be like a galaxy s3s in apple terms which is basically what they did lol

Not to mention that just like with the US S3, the US variant S4 only gets quad core instead of octo. Unless Samsung absolutely stuns me with the S5 I will be going back to HTC. I miss my Sensation, which was only SLIGHTLY less impressive then the S3. HTC doesn't give us last years crap while everyone else gets the big boy toys. Samsungs marketing strategy for US BLOWS. I've heard that it has less to do with their marketing and more to do with the limitations put on by either US carriers or the US chip manufacturers. I can't find the sources right now but I seriously doubt Samsung wants to make multiple versions of the same phone (it'd be much more to their advantage to make one version en masse rather than a few different ones).

I think it had to do with the chipsets used in each and the different networks here in the states.
And it's really not a matter of whether they want to or not, as I'm sure that they would rather only support one phone as its more effective and cost-efficient because the software and hardware developments would be made once and then distributed to ALL Samsung Xxxx phones. As topherk said, it's probably due to limitations set either by the carriers, or maybe even by the FCC.
And I'm sure you're not the first, or the last, to complain about the more minimalistic approach when it comes to Samsung releasing a phone for the states versus the international version of the same phone.
no because I enjoy my S3's 3G/4G SVDO capabilities meaning using data/phone at sametime and the S4 can only do this with 4G.....so hope the S5 has 3G and 4G SVDO..... must say the S4 hardware looks nice

this is a reason for me as well. it seems the u.s. gets a crappier version of the phone that is released internationally.i t may have to be due to carrier restrictions, politics, etc. either way it does not make me a happy consumer.
i hate my s3. i think its more due to carrier (sprint) and it's horrible "4g" coverage. I had a epic 4g before this and it blows the s3 away with data connection.

That last comment is ridiculous, I had an Epic 4g while it was an amazing phone it doesn't even compare to the S3. My data and connection on the S3 is amazing. LTE is incredible fast and excellent for battery savings. This phone locks 22 satellites in a couple of seconds, the Epic was lucky to get 10 on a perfect day standing outside.

Hmm... looks like I might be alone. And to add to it, I'd be buying it without an upgrade (aka full $600 price tag, after taxes probably more like $650). I'll have a bout a month or so before I have the money saved up.. going to Best Buy again today to play with it again lol.
It's either I get the S4 or a new basketball hoop, either way I' getting myself a nice present for the summer!

We can't call it an s3s because the screen gets bigger and and resolution went up
Also enough with you noobs saying the octa core is so much better
I don't know the exact details but the Octa core is just a a strong quad core and a low power quad core they aren't used together
Not a godly super powered 8 core
