[Q] How exactly do you fix GPS on CM9? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm on CM9 A5 about to ugprade to A6.
However, my GPS won't lock. Navigation keeps saying "Searching for GPS". I have a trip I need GPS for in about 2 hrs and it will suck if I cannot get it to work.
I searched and it's something about flashing to gingerbread? I couldn't find any clear instructions on what exactly I would have to do though. How can I do that from CM9? Would I loose my data? I spent 2hrs configuring tretchbucket and stuff, hopefully I won't have to wipe in order to fix my GPS.
Can someone explain please?

Dont take this the wrong way but I am not sure where you were searching because the answers are associated with the CM9 thread and clearly noted unfortunately in too many places throughout the web and this section of the forum...
All the questions you have asked are all answered in the directions.... Gotta change up your words when searching which may help... This is part of the install guide section under tools
Not trying to flame just that this question is an easy one

Edit: No data lost and there is a video...

I understand. I should have searched a bit more about what emmc actually is so I knew how it worked. I got what I needed, many thanks for the swift answer and my apologies for not searching more.

No problem if this helps you to dig deeper next time then its all for the good...
good luck and cm9 Nightlies run great as well.

There is also something in the forum called GPS fix....its a zip you use in CWM...think I saw it in Phantom ROM post....helps A LOT. I get a lock in seconds when flashed.
EDIT: try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27439275

Thanks! I tried the flashable zip, however the GPS didn't lock.
I followed the temporary emmc boot, locked on using that, and now my GPS is working flawlessly and locking very quickly.

(Q) Can someone clear up the whole rom thing for me?

So on following sorensiim's guide(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893291) i noticed the jit/ deodexed thingy for a rom number 2.2 or 2.3, where do i get these roms, and how do i install them? also, if i wipe the user settings and dalvik cache, all my contacts get erased, how do i get those back? 3rd, if i went through that guide and did everything but skipped the jit stuff, would i need to re-over clock it? any help is appreciated.
READ EVERYTHING
Go through a few threads in the development forum and just read from first to last post.
Most of your questions will be answered and you will learn a LOT!

Wow, thanks(!)
A lot of the guides aren't that well written, for people starting from scratch - I'm a reasonably techy guy but this is my first Android phone and I find very few of the guides at all comprehensible.
So saying 'read everything' is not at all helpful.
edit: this guide is one of the clearer ones to follow.
Don't worry about what you're doing, just follow the steps.
Yes but part of the fun is playing with the phone and seeing how things work, not annoying users on here.

The whole point of XDA is for people to discuss and learn. A valid question has been asked, and you don't need to be rude.
Some of us may have been mucking around with our phones for years, but a lot of users on here are still beginners, so give them a break. Nearly everyone here had no idea what they were doing when they started screwing around with their ROMS.
Thank you for explaining that.

[Q] Flashed to Boost, No GPS, Can't update profiles. What do?

Like the title says, I can't update my profiles, some authentication error. I can't get a single satellite to fix. I've tried outdoors, flat surfaces, cleared A-GPS, power cycles, New ROMS, DataJosh's Zip fix, FasterFix's New locations.. sooo many potential fixes to my problem.
Please help..
i answered your question on how to fix being able to update prl on the general thread..
"flashing" your phone to boost has nothing to prevent you from flashing a custom rom your probably doing something wrong.

Thanks a ton, man!
This site is kinda hard to navigate through... I'm learning.
I understand you are learning but making a thread in two places is not going to help your caus. Now we answered your profiles question like said above in the other thread. Your No GPS means you may have to try and flash other roms in hopes you get a lock. Also Boost signal sometimes is a lil shaky so make sure you are getting good 3g signal.
Also if this site is a little difficult to navigate through for you why don't you just use Google. Put your search topic in "gps fix epic touch xda" placing xda at the end of your search will prompt Google to look in xda for you already and you can see more links easier...
Not trying to be an ass but getting help in here is also about asking for it the right way and also trying to help yourself as well.... Also try other GPS apps to see if they help
Good Luck

No problem. hey just a hint you should only post question in the Q&A threads so you wont get flamed on/hassled or even get warnings from the mod's.
You should try some apps on the market for the GPS
and if no one else has said it then WELCOME to the Site.

[Q] Just starting

Hello, i was wondering if i could get some help with answering a few questions i had. In advance i have been using smartphones for some time now but due to lazyness i never really got into rooting and modding them. So as while i am by nature a techy, i still need some things explained. Just some basics about the process, the terminolgy, like CMO9, FD24 so on and so forth, and well just anything about rooting. Im just looking to absorb as much as possible about it so i know what im doing.
The wiki page may be a useful resource.

Yes that is helpful thank you. I still had some questions concerning exactly what something like CM09 is, i didnt find any references to it on the wiki pages for kernels or roms.
To go from not doing anything with phone modiciation to litterally using ODIN to one click my stock to fd26, and then try to play catch up is a lot of info at one time lol.

CM9 refers to cyanogen mod, its an open source android variant that is developed on multiple phones. Never tried it on this phone yet. Their website is http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ and our thread is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563658

Addiction starts this way Take your time and read, read, read before you do anything else.
Also search, search and do some more searching... using the search tool at the very top of any XDA page. It's the best tool to find out about something specific. Be super careful, making absolutely certain that anything you plan to use on your phone is for the E4GT (Epic 4G Touch). If you accidentally flash the wrong thing it can go very wrong.
So, like SomeGuy said, do a LOT of reading.

This is exactly right I spent about 3 days doing research before I flashed and in the end I still ended up almost bricking my phone. I accidentally flashed a ROM for the gt I9100 and the computer would not recognize the phone and in recovery I could not aces my SD card but luckily I was able to Odin back to stock!
Ya i was able to flash it successfully. Got 4.0 on it with fd26 and nova launcher instead of touch wiz, because thats junk in my opinion. Seems to be working just fine, no sms, gps or 3g issues thus far. Video is kinda glitchy on playback within the phone doenst scale right to the orientation of the phone

"Cannot connect to camera" error?

I'm using the task and ktoonsez's aokp jb ROM and posted in the Q&A thread but seems to be buried under the other questions. So I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing this problem with other ROMs as well? I did a search on Google but got mixed results. Some say it's a driver issue while others say it might be defective hardware.
I did a fullwipe before installing the custom ROM and had no problem for about a day. Now I get this error repeatedly. Numerous reboots will get it to work again, but not for long.
Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks.

why wouldnt you just ask it again then? i see no reason to start a new thread for it dude. camera works awesome. redownload the rom, fully wipe your device, and then reflash.
Sorry task. I didn't get ant to post the same question again and again if nobody else is having the problem. Might as well post it here to see if it could be a hardware issue.

[Q] 3G Data and signal help

Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

Here is the guide to get MSL code. Let me know if it works or not. And hit thanks if you think it helped at all! Good luck

Thanks done on both posts man. I really appreciate it.
I need to look through the root guide to see if there is a way to get this thing rooted without losingthe settings, etc.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

That's the first thing you do after rooting with a custom recovery.
One step at a time. Do your research, read and ask questions and you'll be good to go.
Tip, use Google to search the forum, the forum search can be confusing at best.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Just had someone local take a good look at my phone.
Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.
Another flashedphones.net victim.
They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

That you do(have a good jb rom, if you have jellyverse that is ). I'm using GB27 modem on mine. Works fine, but no modem I have will get goods signal in my office. Awesome that you'll get to watch live and in color. Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else. I may not know the answer, but can certainly find it or reach out to someone who does know.
