Could Use Some Direction With A Rom and Booting - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched and searched for my exact issue and I am not coming up with anything. Took a stock Kindle Fire, Rooted, Recovery and BL no problem.
If I try to flash a rom that is ICS based it has issues booting. It shows fff then goes to boot and gives a black screen. If I go into fff and tell it boot normal then it will show the boot animation (say cm9 robot) and just bootloop.
I have tried to adb commands for 4000 and checked my roms are downloading correctly. I have gone back to stock with no fff or twrp then started over and I always end with this same result. I never lose fff or twrp and always keep adb other than when it's bootlooping.
If I flash a rom like CM7 or stock rooted it boots up with no issues. Is this a kernel bug and if so is there a way around it? Any advice would be great, thank you. It also seems like if the device is plugged in it wont even bootloop. It just stays at the black screen.

This could be the result of bad flashes and/or corrupt data carried over from your multiple flashes.
If so, you didn't mention anything about wiping data (sytem/cache/dalvik) in TWRP before each flash in your process, so that's most likely what's causing the issue.
Try those and also do a "fix permissions" after reboot as added measure.

sounds like your in fastboot?
try fastboot devices and see if it returns anything, if you get a number back then you are stuck in fastboot mode.
turn off kindle with usb cable attached, issue command bellow, when it says waiting for device switch on kindle, if fastboot kicks in it should reset bootmode.
fastboot 0x1949 bootmode 4000
or
fastboot 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000

So here is the point im at after following the tips.
I can get the device to boot one time on a custom rom. After the one time, dead. It doesn't show that it's in fastboot mode when it has the black screen.
When I get the 4.0 rom to load, adb or even usb mass storage mode doesn't recognize the device. Something really odd is happening and I have no clue as to what. Anyone else have a problem like this?

From TWRP:
adb shell parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 p > parted_output.txt
Paste parted_output.txt's contents here.

Kindle Fire. Device Manager Sees but Kindle Fire Utility Doesn't

My Kindle was rooted but I decided to try my hand at installing a custom ROM. However, the ROM I tried would not work and the screen stayed black. However, thanks to TWRP I could install Kindle from Amazon again. The installation went thru smoothly, or so I thought. Now, when I boot the Kindle, I see the Kindle Fire Logo and it stays there. The Computer can see the Kindle as an Android device, Android Composite Device. But Kindle Fire Utility cannot see it so I could try and re-install it again. Any suggestions?
Lacking information, so I'll just fill the voids with assumptions.
I *assume* you didn't wipe cache, dalvik-cache and most important when switching from a ROM to another, Factory Reset - this is the reason said custom ROM wouldn't work, and the reason flashing back update.zip (as you said you installed it, rather than restoring a backup) caused your KF to get stuck in a semi brick.
The most important question here is, do you have FFF installed?
If you do, fixing this is trivial. Just get into TWRP from FFF, wipe cache, dalvik-cache and factory reset and then install whatever ROM you'd like to try or use.
If you don't have FFF installed, then your solutions are to either get a factory cable (recommended) or to crack open the case and do the USB pin short trick. From there you can use fastboot to install FFF and boot into TWRP.
Alternatively, you can try "fastboot getvar product" or "adb shell idme bootmode 5001" to see if you get lucky.

I tried the USB pin short trick but now my Kindle won't turn on at all nor will it charge. Thanks anyways!
i have similar problem ......please need help
After successfully rooting kf with kfu and making a backup ... I did factory reset and flashed a custom rom ... now kindle is stuck on " kindle fire" logo and just keeps flashing and rebooting . My computer recognizes it as android phone ( android adb ) and kfu does too but only for a couple of seconds . During those few seconds I try recovery ... fast boot ...normal boot... n none seem to work . Kf just reboots n returns to boot loop . Any advice is appreciated .. thanks

What colour is the "kindle fire" logo when you turn on your KF?
Force Kindle into Fastboot
Ok, so I have finally got my Kindle to turn on, using the USB Short Trick. Now my only question is about getting the Kindle to boot into fastboot mode so I can re-format the sdcard partition and finally load a new ROM. I have tried several different commands and they all seem to miss the window of opportunity to start the kindle in fastboot mode. Is there any way, short of a factory cable, that one can make the kindle start in fastboot mode?
Not fastboot get var

fastboot getvar product doesn't seem to do the trick. The kindle seems to be in fastboot mode but the adb shell cannot access the device.
The problem is that you don't have the fastboot drivers installed (also, ADB will not work while fastboot is active) - Windows is painfully slow at detecting a device and installing its drivers, so by the time it even notices anything, the fastboot window is already over.
To solve this, use firekit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430038
The script that will probably suit your needs the most is usb_install_fff_twrp.

I have TWRP and FFF installed. However, upon booting into TWRP, the sdcard partition cannot be mounted, to the Kindle that is, and as such, I cannot mount the sdcard to the computer. When I researched this some more, I found that I can fix this by using a command via adb shell. The guide instructed using fastboot to achieve this. When would be the best time to use adb shell?
What's the output of partitions.txt? (type the following from TWRP)
adb shell parted /dev/block/mmcblk0 p > partitions.txt
Can't use adb

The problem at hand is using adb. I can never time it exactly right to open adb. I always get an "error: device not found". Windows even recognizes that Android ADB Interface is plugged in.
Okay, things are getting awfully confusing here.
What exactly is it that you can do and that you cannot do?
For example, are FFF and TWRP functional?
GOT IT!
Thank you! I finally figured out that the wrong driver had reinstalled and that was causing my computer to not be able to use adb shell. I fixed that and voila, I am now running CM9. Thanks again!

[How To] Fix Stock Kindle Fire 2 Bootloop

A few months ago I tried to root/ gapps a KF2 for a friend, and after a freak OTA update the horrible thing kept getting stuck in a bootloop.
Basically if you powered it on it would get stuck on the Kindle pulsing logo until it restarted itself from scratch and did it all over again. Then on the few times it would get to the standard lock screen it would freeze up there and restart itself anyway.
Every now and then it would boot in and work fine though.
What I eventually did to get it working:
1.) Get a factory cable (they don't cost too much off ebay).
2.) Using fastboot mode clear the data and cache partition:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
20 seconds later the device worked perfectly and hasn't bootlooped since.
It might also be possible to do this by a.) installing TWRP and erasing the cache/ data from there, or b.) booting into the bootloader from a rooted system. I don't want to test this though because at this point I just want to make this awful thing work properly in stock.
I hope this helps someone else in the same situation. I do remember reading a similar problem on XDA a few months ago when it started giving trouble.

You need to use the fastboot application. You can get it either via the Android Development Kit (just google for it) or just use it from any other source (I know the FlashTool for Sony phones has it along with ADB). Once it is on your PC, open a command prompt window to that folder and run it from there.
Just remember you need the Kindle to be in FB Mode (the screen has a picture of a red and green stoplight on it) and you need fastboot drivers installed for the device (this is a bit tricky for Win8, no problem for Windows 7 though).

Please make sure that you have a Kindle Fire 2 (or at least something in the second generation Fire range). It might help if you take a picture of the device in fastboot mode and post it here.
Also did you boot the kindle into fastboot mode using a factory cable, or using a command from Android itself (it would have involved adb shell).

Trying to do any work on a Kindle without a cable is a total pain. If you own the device just pay the few dollars to get one and make your life easier.
If you cannot get into ADB with full root, or a 3rd party recovery that was already installed you will need the cable to fix things.

My Kindle Fire is very bricked

I used Hashcode's method to install a second bootloader and to install recovery and CM10.1. After I flashed CM10.1 like normal, I didn't like it, as the screen resolution was way out of whack. So, I restore using fastboot the stock .img backups that I created prior to rooting.
Well, now my Kindle gets stuck on the Kindle splash screen, and no matter what I do to flash stock back onto it, every time it reboots, it has the same problem. I have tried the KFHD restore tool (none of the commands work), KFFirstAide (the same problem as KFHD restore), I even tried doing the rooting process again, with the same results. I cannot get this cursed device to boot into stock OS, and I have burned out on trying to fix it. I've had this thing for one day.... :crying:

Which splash to you become stuck at? White and orange logo or white and blue? If you get stuck at the white and orange it is a stack installation failure. If you get stuck at the white and blue logo the system is likely broken. Can you access recovery? Get it into fastboot and try
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase cache
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 erase userdata
at the userdata part it could hang just let it sit for ten minutes or so. Then
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
side note this will wipe your sdcard so all backups and rom files will be gone. So best you transfer all you wish to keep to your pc.

With a lot of persistence, I finally restored it. I had to use KFFA. It was ver likely that it was a stack failure, as when I was using Hashcode's method to root, I never pushed a new stack (because adb wasn't working).
But all is good now, I fixed it! :victory:
After the fact
I suppose it's not much a help now but using fastboot has helped me a lot with my kindle. I've locked it up several times to the point I thought it was broken. Usually it seems if you can turn it on and you see anything, you still can fix it.

[Help] Reviving a dead KF

I have a KF1 I had bought off ebay to try to repair so I know I was pretty much throwing money away but it was a rather cheap buy so I went ahead and bought it. The condition was stated "Freezes" but overall physical appearance was near mint.
On receiving the KF it would not power up, no power light, no logo, no nothing. So I plugged it in let it charge for a while. Still no light or any response from hitting or holding the power button. So I thought maybe it has a bad usb connection/battery. Took it apart and got my Multimeter out and measured voltage at the battery. 3.7V while plugged in. Took the battery out and measured voltage at the charge port solder connections, can't remember what the reading was (3.7 - 4.1 ?) but I knew the port was undamaged anyway. Pulled out my factory cable and plugged it into my computer. Still nothing. No signs of life at all.
At this point I went and did some research and found the "Firekit LiveUSB kit 1.1" followed instructions and after several attempts finally got it to boot into recovery by shorting usb bootmode trick and using the "usb_fix_parts_and_install_fff_twrp" script. However I could not do much else. It would not mount anything. No sdcard, no cache, no system, no nothing.
I did some more research and found the How To thread for fixing failure to mount xxxxx. Followed those steps but nothing worked. when trying to run parted on /dev/block/mmcblk0 it would always say "unable to stat device" or something like that. I could not do much with the recovery that was loaded with the firekit either so I thought I would download the newest recovery and try that with the "usb_fix_parts_and_install_fff_twrp" script. Once I got a newer recovery up I could use the file manager and look inside /dev/block/. There was no mmcblk0 in there at all. all that was there was a bunch of "loop" files and "ram" files. nothing else.
I did some more research and found the EMMC curruption fix by Hashcode. Tried running that several times but would always have problems using the mmc_utils. It would always hang. I thought I would try anyway to leave the mmc_utils vendor 0 and vendor 4 commands running for 5 minutes each and continue with the next steps. Moving from the next steps in that forum I was not able to get into recovery. it would always stay at the TWRP splash screen (although ADB commands would still work).
At this point I was ready to give up. I shut everything down pulled the battery out and was looking to see if I could find any info on the motherboard. When I put the battery back in it booted up the kindle and got stuck in a bootloop of the Yellow triangle (FFF) then kindle logo. Before this I always had to do the usb boot shorting method to get it to boot, so at least I'm getting somewhere. I then used fastboot commands to perform oem format and flash the xloader, fff1.4a bootloader, and recovery. succeeded on all of those so I thought I had got it working. Rebooted device and it would get to the FFF1.4a blue kindle logo, I could then hit the power button and select recovery. Unfortunately it would just sit there and not do anything.
I rebooted the device and did the fastboot command to boot the recovery image. Stuck at TWRP splash just like before. Rebooted device again and this time used fastboot commands to flash recovery followed by boot the same recovery image I just used to flash the recovery. Success! was able to get into TWRP. But I'm still stuck! lol. Can't do anything with it since it cannot mount any partition. mmcblk0 or any other partition does not exist in /dev/block/. Can't even mount the sdcard yet somehow adb push xxx /sdcard works and I can view sdcard inside the file manager in recovery. Can't wipe anything, can't install anything. Always get errors. I was able to copy recovery log to sd card from the advanced menu and pull it to my computer with adb pull.
So as to the reason I'm posting this. What now? lol. I'm at a loss for what to do.
Since you apparently have access to fastboot and can flash new bootloader and recovery images, try flashing these as well and see if it makes any difference...

No luck. farthest I can get is booting into recovery after I do the fastboot commands:
fastboot flash recovery twrp2610.img
fastboot boot twrp2610.img
note: I have to flash recovery before being able to use the boot command, otherwise it stays at the TWRP splash and goes no further.
flashing the boot and system images report success although for some reason both boot and system images write in 1.23s exactly each and say OKAY. I cannot issue any reboot commands through fastboot, they all cause the kindle to reboot with no display. Have to hard reset to get back to the bootloader. Cannot boot the kernel either using fastboot (boot.img you gave me).
I'm not much of a Linux person at all, but is there some commands I can try to get a detail on all the hardware devices detected? Seems weird that it always fails to mount everything as well as not detecting any partitions or emmc.

There is one option that I know of. A user in the KF2 forums was able to mount the eMMC to his Linux computer, but it's slightly more advanced than entering a few commands in the terminal. If no one else chimes in with the appropriate amount of knowledge, it may be your only option.

The motherboard is the same on both the KF1 and KF2 so the instructions for setting it up would be the same as well. Once mounted, you may have to repartition/reformat the device accordingly.

I guess that means its dead? Anyone else see something like that?

[Q] Kindle Fire 1st gen refuses to boot past FFF

Hi all, I'm hoping to get some help or advice. I have a 1st gen Kindle Fire. When I received it, it had the stock bootloader installed and appeared to be stuck in fastboot mode. I performed the following steps:
1. used a factory cable to get access to fastboot
2. used soupkit (in Unbuntu 10.10) to flash FFF 1.4a and TWRP 2.2.2.1. Both flashed successfully.
3. turned the Kindle off (holding power for 20 secs)
4. switched over to a normal USB cable
5. powered up and issued 'fastboot getvar product' to stop FFF in fastboot
6. ran 'fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000' to reset to normal bootmode
7. 'fastboot reboot'
8. in FFF chose recovery (power led turned orange and FFF says booting)
9. stuck
I've tried reflashing FFF and TWRP several times, redownloaded and check MD5 (all ok). No matter what I do it seems this KF refuses to move past the bootloader.Any help or ideas? Thanks for your time.

Maybe try different versions of FFF and/or TWRP? You can also try the KFU tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
still perplexed
Thanks Scoobio, I did try that too. So far I have successfully installed 3 versions of bootloader (FFF 1.4a, FFF with yellow triangle, and also stock from Amazon). All three install successfully. Unfortunately all three have the same symptoms. I am able to execute fastboot commands to flash images, getvar, etc, etc, and they complete successfully. However anytime I "ask" or "let" the bootloader try to boot system or recovery it hangs. FFF 1.4a hangs, previous "yellow triangle" version of FFF hangs, stock also hangs - always at the same point. The screen never flashes like it does when the recovery or kernel first loads. So I don't think its making it that far.
I've tried with factory cable, regular usb, no usb at all. Always hangs on boot. I also tried running KFU in Windows (same problems), SoupKit (same problems), and FireKit (same problems). Last thing I tried was usb_fix_parts_and_install_fff_twrp. It also ran successfully but still same problem.
At this point I don't care so much about fixing the kindle as much as solving the riddle. I'd like to figure this out just so I know...you know I can't let the machine win. So I'm wondering if it could be bad memory blocks or something else missing...will update if i discover anything further. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Oh and...I am able to reset bootmode back to normal or recovery or fastboot...always completes the command successfully but never makes a difference.
