[Q] Downloading music on phone - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where and how do i do this for my phone? I have no idea on anything about it lol
I was looking to changing my ring tone to Metallica Fuel
LOL thanks guys

Just copy mp3 files from your computer to your phone. Make a folder on your sd card called music. You can also make a folder called ringtones and copy the files there.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

how exactly would i do this? do i just email it to myself? Sorry im a newb

plugging the phone into the computer and dragging them into the SD card?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

no offense dude but uhh my grandfather thats 60 can do this and he has a hard time with technology so its kind of crazy that the simple little things you cant do.
On your sd card when plugged into a computer it should give you an already made folder called music to throw it in.

You can also download frostwire all to download music
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

You can just use the Internet browser to download music that you *own* on file sharing sites (like I said, you must actually own the music for it to be legal, and otherwise, it is considered piracy). You can also just download music off of the play store and buy it again. But this is a really basic phone function... Just plug it in and drag in the music.
Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G using Tapatalk 2

I had used app to modify my current ringtone its called mp3 ringtone, i can download music which i didnt know the app could do it, so is this a legal app? what does this frostwire let me do? the app i have lets me modify it right there after i download it/
now on my phone i hooked it to the computer and sent the file to my phone... i tired to find it. i went into settings and went to ring tones but i didnt c it? how can i get to all the music on my phone and delete some old crap? how can i see whats on the sd card?
then i have a video clip on my phone and i want to take a certain part and make just a notifier ringtone.... how would i do that?
Sorry that your 60 year old grand papa gets it, instead of wasting time and potentially messing up my computer- phone i ask a question. I always operate under the idea that the only stupid question is the one not asked??
but thanks guys

Yeah ignore him... anything downloading paid things for "free" is illegal.

Its the way you said it... the comment about your grandfather, while most likely unintended, could've been misconstrued as hurtful and was defenitely disrespectful... its like people forget respect when they are typing on the keyboard... next time just say mount sd card and copy... no need for the grandpa comment...

Thread cleaned
Thanks

speed up media scanning?

does any one know of a way to speed up media scanning of external_sd and usb storage upon reboots?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
in ROM toolbox app they have a tweak for that but ive never tried it to be honest but its located in the peformance tab when you open up the app and of course you must be rooted running a custom ROM
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Try sd booster or sd speed increase in the market. Raise value to 2048 and set on boot . It made a slight difference on mine when booting up.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
most the custom roms already increased the size of the cache for the sd cards...i might be wrong but from what ive read its the cache size that determines the speed ...but as someone posted earlier speed increase worked great when i had my evo...especially if ur on a stock rom

thats because the evo's was defaulted to like, 4. it helped SO much lol. i used the sd booster in rom toolbox on both my evo and e4gt and set it to 2048. worked GREAT on evo. but imho, the speed increase is only slightly noticeable on my e4gt. not so much that i swear by it like on my evo. but, i still run it lol
i'm not really speaking on speeding up the process itself, im more or less wondering if we can get it to trigger faster. upon a fresh flash its always fast, but as time goes by and more and more apps get installed it starts to initiate 20-40 seconds after phone is up and running and lock screen hss already been opened

Add a .nomedia file to folders of any files that you dont need scanned on boot up. I do this to my folders with all my Roms and kernels and anything else that I dont want scanned on boot. This will save a good bit of time if you have alot that it scans. Sorry just read your last comment and i am not sure on how to make it start sooner. I dont know if that is possible.

Weird thing I noticed after playing with that setting is SD card bench marking apps, the read and write speeds slowed down after raising the value.

Sure. Use a file explorer app like astro or es file explorer. Pick the folder u want to do it for. Open it up and create a new file. Name it
.nomedia so for instance if u did this on the root of your SD card nothing would get scanned (btw I don't advise that) hope that helps guys.

Where did my pictures go?

This sounds like a dumb question but I've never had this happen to me before. The other day I switched to Eugene's MIUI Patchrom. I was on it for about ten minutes when I realized I couldn't access my pictures. My gallery was showing a couple hundred when I have over 2000. I assumed it was the rom since it's not super stable. I restored my backup or Juggernaut and I just realized I can still not see my pictures. Surely they didn't get deleted, right? Please help because those pictures mean a lot to me. Thanks.

I don't know of any ROMS that will wipe the sdcard. Did you check the DCIM directory with root explorer or via USB from your PC?
Yeah I did. Like I said, the folders are still there with the names I gave them, they're just empty.

O well, have fun finding the pictures/ taking them again.
Besides the attributes getting changed by accident to hidden, I'd cough it up as a loss unless you can manage to do a file recovery program to scrape them off somehow

O&O Software makes a really good file/folder/partition recovery program. I'd imagine it would work on sd, but im not 100% sure.. It never hurts to check
That's always my biggest worry when switching to a new ROM, because all my videos and pics are of my kids for the most part.
I personally don't know the best way to get them back, and the position you are in really sucks. What I tend to do is backup all my photos and pictures to my external SD card (32gb, so I have the space). Also make a backup on my computer and make another backup through a cloud storage program of your choice, I am currently using Drive.
I know that is a bit of overkill, but again, they are pics and vids of my kids growing up so I want to be 100% certain they don't get lost.
Hopefully you are able to find those pics, if not, perhaps my suggestion will help you in the future. Peace.
Thanks for the help, those who actually suggested something. I used some app from the gay store and it was able to recover some of my pictures, but not all. I suppose I'll just have to be more careful and make backups in the future.

[Q] Reasons for App removal from GPlay????

Anyone know why an APP would be removed from the app store? I have Disk Defragmenter, and it works great, but now its not in the Play Store. I think it just recently came out too but I don't see why (if) it was removed.. didnt violate any copyrights..
FYI flash memory of any kind (home pc, phone, whatever) doesn't need to be defragmented.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
More so in fact it will cause flash to wear out much faster. There is no spinning disc to seek data from so no need to defragment. As well ext* doesn't fragment files like ms file systems so no need.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Yep.
Found this thread while looking up whatever had happened to the Disk Defragmenter at the Play store. I think it may have been bumped because it's Push adverts were a little too Pushy. I thought I'd been infected with illegal adware, the way ads started presenting themselves as app alerts in my notification bar. Then I realized one of the products being Pushed was Disk Defragmenter itself.
Perhaps it's buried in their fine print, agreeing to all that pushyness. But I'd be glad to know Google frowns upon apps that aren't very clear about their particularly invasive ad strategies.
Weird, I never had airpush ads using that program..
DMolina
Perhaps it's because I'm on a Sprint Evo OG, and either T-Mobile or Samsung has got their act together in a better way...
I don't know, but I've uninstalled DD, and all the "alerts" are gone.
Shame, too... DD was featured in Android Authority's "best new apps" for August 2012. I only found this forum because I wanted to know why such a featured app would just vanish. I mean, I had to go into the OS app manager to uninstall, because the play store wouldn't even acknowledge it's existence on my phone!
Yea me too. And our internal sd does get fragmented. I had a lot before i used it the first time. It works good.. Now i gotta do it on laptop again. I liked how the app was developed for on the go.. Oh well..

How? Internal sd card is EMMC..that's flash memory... from what I always thought
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
When you plug it to computer it reads the "11.26gb" that we have and external sd. Those are what gets defragged. I think the EMMC is the 1.95gb that it also has, which is the linux part that cant be defragged..
Plus, youre probably using a custom rom that has the internal sd as emmc. Like on CM and AOKP I think..
DMolina ツ
Repeat after me: You do NOT have to defrag your phone's storage because it is flash.
Android uses flash memory, and flash memory does not benefit from defragmentation because fragmentation does not slow it down in the first place. In fact just the opposite - defragmentation only makes things worse by decreasing flash memory's lifetime. Don't take my word for it - Google it.

Lol, some people dont understand... Soon your computer wont need it either thanks to HDD made of Ram, cant wait for that day. But anyway, no spinning magnetic media = no need for defrag

AOKP media files lost !!

What is changing to a new rom going to do for him? If his music is gone it's gone... Unless I'm missing something? Why isn't your music on your computer or somewhere else? How did you get it on your phone, lol? If it some where and you can't find it, pull everything from your storage places and put them on your PC and search both files with in your computer search index and see if you can find them... If they are there, then create a folder named /music and you will good to go. If they aren't there then get new music or however you got them there in the first place.

I would start putting the music somehwere other then only on phone storage, just in case. I've accidentally wiped internal storage once, and I've had External sdcards go bad or just randomly out of no where lose all data in it. make a dropbox and do TiBu once a week and move them there your self with some type of file manager if you don't wanna pay the money for Titanium Backup pro. I also bet all your stuff is there you are just looking in the wrong places. What file manager are you using to look for your "lost stuff"?

When I did that Titanium Backup created a new file on the internal drive and could not see the moved back up. Also the file will not let you manually add APK files.
I haven't found a way to change the backup path either.

If you don't have a helpful reply and wanna just be a [email protected]@, don't reply to my posts. That's why I hate posting questions on this forum, everyone likes to make people look stupid.

Since you are asking in questions and help, I'll give it a whirl. I don't KNOW this is the answer, but it is something to try. KK blocks access to directories that haven't been created by the app in question. Did you get TiBu to create a new directory for backups? Or did you select a directory that already existed? You might try a new directory with a different name on the external card. Good luck.
edit: FYI, just tried this and it works. The method to browse a folder in TiBu is a little obscure. Choose backup folder under preferences, then push the back key. You'll see folders pop up in the window. The first 'folder' is actually a key to make a new folder. Do this on the SD card, and it worked for me.
Yep, gotta create the new folder using titanium.
