[Q] Roms for AT&T Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm one click away from buying the Galaxy Nexus from Google for $349 (AT&T HSPS+ unlocked). The only thing holding me back is rooting/roms. Would I run international roms on it since its an unlocked version? I went to the Dev section, but didn't see an AT&T dev forum for this phone.
Thanks

The carrier isn't significant unless you're using a Sprint or Verizon branded Galaxy Nexus. All other Galaxy Nexus devices (the GSM models) are basically identical. The only black sheep is the Docomo model, which seems to have issues due to the SIM lock in place.

How would I be able to tell if its the Docomo model? This is it right here
https://play.google.com/store/devic...XZpY2VzX1VTX18xX3Byb21vXzEzNDA1MTg5NjUwMzYiXQ..

If you buy it from Google it isn't the Docomo model.

Basically All GSM GNex owners go to the Android development forum. CDMA (Sprint and GNex) go to their respective forums

To be clear, there is no such thing as an AT&T Galaxy Nexus. From the Play Store, there is only one Galaxy Nexus (takju), which is unassociated with any one carrier and is compatible with AT&T's network (as well as every other GSM network).
Any thread or ROM that refers to just "Galaxy Nexus" with no mention of Verizon, Sprint, toro, toroplus, LTE, or CDMA will likely apply to your phone. The only exception would be if you're flashing radios since those are differentiated by region, but if that's something you're interested in, I'd suggest researching thoroughly before attempting

Thanks a lot for the input guys. I live in CA so I doubt I'd have to mess with the radio lol. Nexus should be here next week!

The baseband that the Play Store GNex ships with (at least mine did anyway) was XXLA2 which is actually a European baseband. It should work fine, but you may have better luck in terms of signal strength/quality/speeds if you use another radio. I know flashing UGLA4 (a North American baseband) on my GNex has proven best for me
If at some point down the line you do want to look into this stuff, I'd suggest this XDA thread on the topic.

Thats nice, a thread where no one was rude even though the answer would be obvious to most on this forum. Some people are so condescending..

I was looking at the Galaxy Nexus Canandian verision i9250..Can i use this one in the USA. whats the difference that and the regular one..they are both gsm..Negri electronics told me it doesnt have the most recent ics...4.0.2 or what ever..
if it is carrier unlocked you will be able to since the phone supports Pentaband. It depends where you get it from. I know my cousin got one from a Virgin store and it works on different carriers. So it may or may not work. Try to find out if it is unlocked or not.
I have a Galaxy Nexus from Telus (bought the day they released them). ICS 4.0.1 is the current version. It roams in the States on AT&T / Verizon (companies that Telus has roaming partnerships with), but I assume as long as its the same technology, you can go on any related carrier.
I can't tell you whether or not its unlocked and if someone tells me how to do that, I can update this post. However, I find it unlikely.

All Nexus phones are unlocked, it just matters about the radio. That Telus bought phone could be used on Bell, SaskTel, and Telus (prob others but im lazy and only recall these ones) in Canada but would need a new radio to go on Rogers/Fido.
Google does not lock their phones to a carrier. Its just dependent on the radio
Cheers!

I'm not sure that is correct, I have a "TELUS" bought Nexus that is working just fine on the original/stock radio on Rogers.

Thanks for clearing that issue of locked and unlocked. I can now tell a few friends that they can switch carriers if they choose to. Just have to pick the right radio.

In Canada, and at least on the big three, they only need to change the radios if they are changing the build from yakjuux (or whatever) to yakju.
Stock ROM/ stock radio will work just fine between telus/rogers/bell

Not sure where you are getting your information, but everything in this post is completely wrong.
Nexus phones are NOT ALL unlocked. Yes, the ones sold in Canada are, but some sold in Europe are LOCKED to specific carriers.
The hardware on all GSM Galaxy Nexus devices is all the same. You can use any GN on Telus, Bell, Virgin, Fido, Rogers,AT&T, T-Mobile, SaskTel, etc. There is no requirement to have a new radio at all.

Again, not true. There is no need to change radios, unless you feel that one radio performs better FOR YOU than another one. All radios will work on Telus/Rogers/Bell.

I am now on 4.03 AOKP and I suggest anyone to do the same.

Ok so I got a question about this, as a Canadian user (on Rogers) does it matter if I use a radio from the Galaxy Nexus thats in the States or if I find one on here that tickles my fancy and wanted to give it a shot I can go ahead and flash that?

The "US version" is a CDMA/LTE device, i.e. the Verizon version. All other devices worldwide are the same hardware-wise. Software-wise, there are minor localization differences in the builds, but you can flash the generic version (which gets updated first) on any one of them.

I live in the Detroit metro area and recently bought a Galaxy Nexus from Windsor Ontario dealer that was unlocked and it worked perfectly. The phone came with ICS 4.0.2 which is the latest version for this phone.
Of course I have rooted it and running the Manhattan ROM and couldn't be happier.
I got mine from Bell, sim-unlocked and i tested it with a friend sim card that came from videotron

Whos going to get the galaxy nexus if it comes to AT&T. That lte might make a big difference between getting the att version and the international version.

But The One X doesn't have as much support as the Galaxy nexus does right now. That phone is still relatively new.
One X will never have the support like our Gnex because Gnex is a developer's phone and a damn good one at that

Amen to that! I had a AT&T Galaxy Note the boat ware was horrible. Half the crap nobody would ever touch, I dont get it lol. Plus the AT&T branding in silver yuck!
Even though my area only has 4G and not LTE. I think HSPA plus is fine, LTE is overrated IMO.
I have a upgrade due in May, I am thinking about getting a HTC One X to complement my galaxy Nexus. Never tried Sense but would love to give it a test run

International version's on AT&T rock.
Seeing as how you can get a lightly used (or new) international GNEX for like $350 nowadays (off contract) it's hard to imagine why ANYONE would be waiting for an "official" AT&T version that's ****ted up with bloatware.
No thank you.

Hold out man..... Just hold out.
killing is my business, and business is good.
i picture the GSM LTE version that will land on AT&T to be just like the VZW version.. sucky battery life and signal issues..
I would rather pick up a One X before picking up a LTE Galaxy Nexus on ATT if that was the choice..
The international version of the One X will have support because it is world wide, rather than tied down to one carrier or having to have a different roms etc. i dont see the lte version having it tho
But the Galaxy Nexus will always have 10x more support since its what Android stands for.. The One X is what HTC wants it to be and for others to work around that

I used 20-30GB on AT&T over and over and I never got a text. Oh yea
More on topic: I think they just need to get the 4th nexus on time. At this point I would buy a unlocked nexus over a "AT&T" nexus any day of the week.
I think what everyone is failing to realize that all GN variants are ether LTE or HSPA+ and not both. I think the ATT variant will be the first one which will do both just like all ATT LTE phones.
That might be worth getting because of that fact. Also, because its GSM it should get full support from Google unlike the cdma nexus phones.
I don't know about you but I might just wait to see what comes out.

The CDMA Nexus phones still have full support from Google in terms of updates and providing factory images. In the past week they've added factory images of 2.3.7 and 4.0.4 for the Nexus S 4G on Sprint, and once the VZW Gnex gets updated to 4.0.4, I guarantee those factory images will be available as well. In addition, Google has recently provided NS4G and VZW Gnex binaries for AOSP 4.0.3 and 4.0.4.
They only removed code support from AOSP because CDMA is a proprietary platform and the APK signatures for the CDMA functionality are ROM specific. So basically it was impossible to compile a pure AOSP build for a CDMA device that would have a working radio. This was a known problem even before they removed official code support. Those APK signatures have to be recreated with every ROM and the APKs themselves can't be open sourced. This really only affects you if you're trying to create a non-rooted OEM firmware. It's really a non-issue for those of us on XDA in the end.
Now to get back on topic, I agree with you that the AT&T GN would be awesome purely since it'd be a GSM/LTE variant. I'll be interested to see speed tests and how it compares to VZW LTE. I'll also be interested to see if it retains HSPA+ support in case you live in a non-LTE market. It'll also be interesting to see if it works with T-Mobile 3G/HSPA+ or if they remove the T-Mobile bands from the radio entirely and make it a true "AT&T Nexus".
I've got the GSM Nexus on ATT and it works great, except when I manually upgraded to 4.0.4, which had terrible connection and battery issues. I reverted to 4.0.2 and it's working great again. Speed, performance are excellent, no urgency to get an LTE phone just yet, considering the options will have so much bloatware. I can fully recommend the phone, just be cautious about upgrading to 4.0.4 at this point, and be prepared to go back to 4.0.2 if needed. Good luck!

This is really sad. Possibly the main reason to get an international GN (and go prepaid).

GNEX HSPA vs I9250 any difference??

So i purchased the GNEX I9250 (international version) im just wondering whats the difference in hardware from the US HSPA version
I believe they are identical.
They're both HSPA. That means the network they run on.

The international one is hspa+ too.
They are the exact same phone, they are both the I9250.
The only different ones are the Verizon and sprint ones. (Cdma/lte)
great thanks for the input, i was doubting my self if i purchased the correct one, im running mine on T-mobile

Don't worry it'll work fine. I was using mine on T-Mobile while I was in America for the last month and had no problems. While I had T-Mobile signal anyway but that's another story and not a problem with my phone more of a problem with American carriers.
I also have small question. I just got my Galaxy Nexus direct from google. When loking at the ROM threads and whatnot, should i be using the GSM roms? Are they for the international version only, or are they safe to use on my straight google nexus.
Just didn't know if their was anything different about this than the GSM one that has been around for a while.

[Q] What Model is my Galaxy Nexus?

I bought a used Galaxy Nexus and would like to install some ROMS. Is there a way i can tell if its verison/sprint or gsm/cmda? The phone seems to be stock unlocked... i have it on Rogers in Canada right now. Thanks in advance
If you are using it in Canada it isn't Verizon or Sprint.
It is GSM.
Cool thanks. This is an amazing phone i cant wait to tune it up But is there any way to find out or know for sure just for future reference?
Yes- The Verizon and Sprint versions only work in the U.S.
Since you're in Canada, you don't have those versions.
If you have the box for the phone, look there. Or, if not there, try under the battery. It's fairly easy to find.
Or if it's working anywhere that's not the U.S., it is the GSM version.
Or if you aren't cdma (Verizon or sprint) or GSM (everyone else) then you are ABC 123 and today's show is brought to you by the letter Z and the number Q

[Q] GSM Versions

Hey all. I am looking to get myself this phone. From what i've read there are 2 gsm versions of this phone correct? And the penta-band version is the only one that will fully utilize t-mobiles network? I just want to be sure before i buy a phone that its the right one for t-mobile.
Thanks for your time.
I bought the phone from the Play Store and I'm currently using a T Mobile SIM.
I don't recall having to choose between versions when I bought it from the Play Store website.
There is the LTE version and the gsm version. You want the gsm version.
The LTE version can only be bought through sprint or Verizon.
Swype'ed on my CM10 Galaxy Nexus
OK so there are only one cdma/lte version and only one GSM version. Are all U.S GSM versions unlocked?
The one from the Play Store is.
So only play store GSM Nexus are unlocked. Then i will have to start my search. Do the play store nexus have a different model number or a way to tell that they are unlocked?
Most gnex are actually unlock, save for some and the Japanese gnex.
OK then, that confuses things a bit. So pretty much i just have o ask if its unlocked and hope they're not lying to me....

There are five different versions, two of which are CDMA/LTE. The variant that you want is the i9250. Here in the U.S., it's doubtful you'll find either of the other two GSM models, as they are limited to Korea and Australia.

If you're in the US, you should just buy it from the Play Store. Good price, unlocked, full warranty.
I would, but then theres tax and shpping and warranty's dont really bother.
If i would purchase new it would cost me $386.55 USD compared to 300 used with goodies.
Well yeah if you're gonna go used to save money then that's fine. I was speaking that if you're going to buy it new, then go to the Play Store.

Hardware-wise there are only 3 different versions:
1) maguro, which is GSM pentaband HSPA
2) toro, which is CDMA/LTE for Verizon
3) toroplus, which is CDMA/LTE for Sprint
While there are a few (5 I think) different model numbers for the GSM version, hardware-wise they are identical.
Most GSM devices are sold unlocked. That said, there are instructions on XDA describing how to unlock, if you ended up buying a SIM-locked device.
