Hi guys, got my Orange-branded uk desire a couple of days ago and have been reading up on rooting etc ever since.
In homage to my username, i'm following this to remove the carrier software:
(rootmydroid.cx.ux/) guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/
I'm at step 3. My question is where can i find the most up-to-date official htc rom to flash onto my desire? I know a google search will give me loads of choices, but a lot are now months old and I'm keen not to flash an old version - im running 2.2 at the moment, but i basically just want an unbranded phone without the hassle of making a goldcard.
Is there one single file out there that i need? or will it consist of seperate rom and a radio files? Will the rom come as a .zip or .exe?
I know its a basic question, and once i've got the answer i'll leave you alone and follow the guide myself....just didnt want to flash with unrevoked, and not have a rom to reflash!
if it helps, these are my details:
bravo pvt4 ship s-on
hboot 0.93.0001
micro 051d
touch panel synt0101
radio 5.10.5.30
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
You will need a Goldcard if you're moving off an Orange rom even if you're going to stock HTC.
This is the first thing to do before going any further.
As for an upto date stock unbranded rom, see http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
You will need to run this RUU on your PC while your phone is connected in fastboot mode.
Please be aware tho, that there isn't an Orange RUU available at the moment so going back to an Orange stock rom could be an issue.
Oh, and do a nand backup as soon as you have rooted.
Mike

Ah right, ok
I was under the impression that loading a rom via unevoked would effectively overwrite the rom i have now, meaning the carrier's applications would be removed in the process?
I guess a complete debrand isn't what I'm after - I don't mind if i still have the Orange logo on start-up (I don't want to unlock it from the Orange network either), as long as there are none of their applications like Orange Maps and Orange Photos when I'm actually using the phone.
Would i still need a goldcard for that? Or would i be able to follow the guide in the link in my first post, flashing the rom you suggested at stage 3?
Thanks in advance!
If you're going to go to a stock, unrooted, unbranded ROM then you won't be able to restore a nandroid backup as you need root!!
First thing, as said, is to make a gold card. Then use it to flash the 2.29.405.2 RUU. Then see how you get on as it is. If you still don't think it's doing what you need it to then root and go for a custom ROM
Right, ive created a goldcard using a guide on the unlockr.com
The website provides links to desire rooting tools 0.75 or 0.80 bootloaders, however mine is 0.93.0001. Can anyone offer any guidance please?
Thanks in advance!
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
can i use that with a goldcard to just debrand then? thought that was only for rooting?

The stock rom (or pretty near to stock) you posted a while back eddy was good enough for his needs do you think?
I think Frankdroid did a variation in your thread of it with root and a2sd+. I was using it for a while and battery was good and the rom smooth enough.

Right...
If you just wanna debrand, as is get rid of the Orange crap, and not be rooted then all you need is a gold card and the RUU from my signature. This will give you a stock, unbranded HTC ROM
If you wanna root and go for a custom ROM, use unrEVOked
yea, i just wanna get rid of the Orange crap. I've made my goldcard, following a guide on theunlockr .com, but have come unstuck when it lists some downloads for certain bootloaders that would allow me to run the RUU, however my bootloader is a lot newer so i wasnt sure where i go from here, now that i've made my goldcard
I've downloaded the RUU, but when i run the .exe, is says its not a valid win32 application....?
Basically i've got a goldcard and the ruu. How do i now get it loaded on my phone?
Which RUU did you download? Latest unbranded one is the one in my signature. Ignore guides online as they've not been updated for months
ive got the ruu from your sig. Goldcard was made following an old guide on the web. Will this be ok?
just not sure where to go next in terms of actually getting the ruu on my phone with the goldcard
Gold card guide is fine. That RUU is also fine as it's my upload and is the one I use myself (using Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Don't know why your version of Windows won't run it - unless it's a corrupt download
yeah, weird. Using Win xp. I'll redownload the ruu in your sig. Once i've got it, what do i do? Turn on phone with power/vol down? Then what do i need to select? I'm guessing once im in the right section, i just connect phone to pc, and just run the ruu .exe?
Sorry, loads of basic q's, appreciate your help!
Turn phone on holding the back button and you'll be in FASTBOOT. Connect to the PC and once your Desire says FASTBOOT USB run the RUU
An error (-5001 : 0x80070002) has occured while running the setup.
Please make sure you have finished any previous setup and closed other applications. If the error still occures, please contact your vendor
Bugger! Any ideas?
It worked! Thanks a lot for your help EddyOS
np
Remember, though...you'll need your gold card for ALL future OTA updates if you're staying stock. You may as well make your day to day card your gold card to cut out the faffing about!

This is the correct method for unrooting. Make sure once you're done to remove the files from your SD card because if you bring your phone in and they find those files, they might give you a hard time.

Yes...although I don't see why you would want to. Only unroot if you're bringing the phone back to the store.

Just follow the steps. download (Unrevoked S-On Tool) first to your sd card. flash it! you will see S-on on your bootloader screen. Then download the PC36IMG to your sd card and boot in to your hboot again and it will do the rest it self. if you have even litlle comen knolege how to flash thing its like 2+2! and it works. did it my self 3 days ago and then tuke it to sprint. good luck.
I tried to update my Hboot the other day to .92 i believe from .78. Thinking it was as simple as flashing it through bootloader and thats it. I was stuck at the white htc screen for hours so I figured I was screwed. I wiped everything with no luck and then I flashed something so now my HBoot is 0.77.0000 and my Radio is 1.00.03.04.06. I was previously running CM7 nightlies. After flashing whatever zip I did I was trying to reverse what I did by "downgrading" and what I did was delete everything. I cant boot and I also dont have recovery anymore. I can only use Bootloader. PLease any help I can get is appreciated. If u can tell me how to fix this ill make a 10 dollar donation to your paypal. My e-mail is [email protected] if u want me e-mail any information. Thanks a ton
Try the following link.
You may need to get an usb sd card reader. That way you can put the needed files using your pc.
I am sure someone more knowledgeable will come along to help you.
I read somewhere that if you can get to the bootloader, it might have not neen bricked yet.
http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=77
Download this file
http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/sto....605.1_RUU.zip
Rename it to PB31IMG.zip, put it on the root of your SD card, Boot into the bootloader (hold vol- and pwr) and let it run the update. After it is done you will be back to a stock 2.2.
I forgot to mention in my initial post that I also updated my radio to the newest 2.15 but still had recovery after I did that and after that is when I tried to downgrade everything and lost my recovery. Didnt know if that makes a difference or not. Thanks for the quick replies
Goos3y that link you sent me says 404 not found.
ok there is hope. I am a littl confused though. Do you have recovery?
No i do not have recovery only hboot. I am using my lady's Droid X with my SD card to put any files on the card that I need to.
http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=108 download the PB31IMG.zip put it on the root of the sd card and flash through bootloader as previously stated. Make sure it is named PB31IMG.zip or it wont get recognized. You will loose root and have S on. Thank doug piston for the dl.

this is not in the right section but if you can still get into recovery restore a working nandroid back up. after that go to backup and restore>advanced restore and restore your boot image. im pretty sure upgrading you hboot erases your boot image.
EDIT: I saw that someone posted a PB31IMG up earlier. I'd try that one first,
This is for the RUU exe.
An RUU is a program which links to any phone that can get into bootloader, and installs a completely unrooted stock image to your phone. It can be done either by using the linked program (an exe) or getting an ruu version that is a zip and running it on bootloader with a specific filename "PB31IMG.zip"
This tutorial is for the EXE version linked below.
WARNING: I have no idea what happens if this is used on an SLCD incredible.
Therefore, you need to know what kind of screen you have, and I'm no expert on that.
DONT use this RUU if you find out you have an SLCD screen.
I am not sure whether android sdk tools or htc usb drivers are nessesary for the ruu, so if anyone can comment on the necessity of these, i would appreciate it.
Heres what you need:
1. A PC
2. The RUU exe file
3. a cable to connect the PC to your phone
4. The knowledge of whether your phone is an SLCD or not.
Instructions:
1. Hook up your phone to the computer
2. Put the phone into hboot
3. Run the ruu
4. If it messes up at the usb detection thing, keep the phone plugged in, exit the ruu program, and then run it again. It should work then.
At the end of this process you should have a fully functional unrooted froyo incredible.
You dont need to give anyone $10. We all want your phone to work.

You will lose root (easy to get back) but will still be S-off.
You can either use the PB31IMG or the .exe method. Just grab the files off doug piston's website. We've had a lot of problems with SLCD owners grabbing the RUU off youtube and other sites then having a screen that no longer works.
I tried the PB31IMG zip method but in hboot after searching through the file it says no image. I am going to try the RUU now. Do i need to have the android sdk stuff on this computer for the RUU to run correctly? I am using a different laptop, one which does not have the driver files installed that I needed to initially root my INC.?

Unfortunately Marty, its not easy to tell which is amoled and SLCD without having the phone on to verify that its hardware revision is 002 or 003.
002=amoled
003=slcd
If you still have the box i'd recommend looking at it.
I thought you loosed s-off but ok. Did you make sure the PB31IMG.zip was not named .zip.zip?

Well, if you run it without them, and it doesnt work, it wont make anything worse. It just wont work, and then youll know. It probably has nothing to do with the SDK and more to do with HBOOT USB drivers. I would say go for it without any of that.
The most important thing you can know is that your incredible is not bricked. Its totally fixable.
I screwed mine up in precisely the same fashion early on, and used the EXE with good success.
Im positive. I got the phone in august of 10 through verizon. I dont have the box anymore. I have looked into it before and think "think" I have the amoled screen.

August = AMOLED
SLCD didnt start to ship until september.
The RUU is loading now. Its at 76% on Updating system. So, if this does work where does my phone stand? Do I need to re-root get s-off and things of that nature?
You will still have s-off. Your phone will be on a .92 hboot with the 2.15 radio. You will need to either rerun the root tool to get recovery back or use a recovery that is flashable through hboot. If using the PB31IMG didn't work for you before I suggest rerunning the tool.
Once recovery is installed do not attempt to restore from within recovery, instead download another rom and flash it through recovery.
Just wanted to drop back in and say thanks to everyone who helped me get my INC back. I really appreciate it and I can throw the BB Storm back in the closet!
hey everyone. I am a bit confused, and i would greatly appreciate your help. So I have a Desire Z from bell. Currently this is what I see when i hold vol down, and power:
Vision PVT SHIP S-ON
H-Boot- 0.81.0000
Microp- 0425
eMMc- boot
Sep 2 2010.17:59:38
So I want to get it back to stock. simply just like out of the box. I do have a back up, BUT it still keeps clock work mod recovery. Which I want to get rid of too. like I said JUST LIKE OUT OF THE BOX. So i was doing some research, and I found that a way to do that is to flash to spf file. I dont really know what that is, but I am assuming it a complete stock rom? (correct me, thank you.) So If any of you could provide me with that file, or tell me how to go about doing this, I would be very very thankful. Again, Thank you for all your help.

Kernel Version: 2.6.32.21
Build number: 1.34.666.5

If your phone has been updated with an ota, it might not be so easy to install a pc10img unless the pc10img IS the ota update. The phone not being rooted and s-on will not let you "downgrade" versions. There may be an easier way, but if you can't simply flash a pc10img, you may have to actually go through all the steps to root/s-off it, THEN you can install the original pc10img.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge with me will just know how to flash the stock recovery if nothing else for you. Here's hoping!

Your welcome. Even after you flash the pc10img it will still be s-off. Just follow the directions that wiki page i gave you to put s back on. It will involve getting temp root on your new stock rom, and having gfree put s back on. Dont worry, it cleans up and does not leave ANY trace that you did the temp root (if you have to send it back or something). Let me know how it goes! I'm watching this in case you need help.

You even confused me with that one. If he was s-on and that start of all of this, the hboot s-stuff has nothing to do with it. Even if it did, installing the pc10img will replace the hboot with the correct one. He used gfree (i think) to get s-off.
I'm sorry OP if i had a desire i would be able to give u the right version to install If you look in the main dev forum i'm sure there is a topic called return desire to stock, and find the pc10img that they recommend. That would be my next suggestion since i really dont know about that phone

I searched a lot. i think my brain is going to explode. I just cant find the right RUU. i tried a couple and they all turn in to error [158] image error. I am so confused at this moment.

okay so i am unrooting now. BUT another roadblock. hboot wont install pc10img it says parsing then returns to the main menu of hboot. i have double checked everything, the image is legit, and the name is fine. when i try to install it through clockwork it says error (bad). i am confused. i will appreciate any help. if u need the firmware info and all, please look at the first few posts.
Is this even possible to RUU back to the old OS then root? I downloaded this file

Come on! Be bold for the rest of us! Lol..I think someone said they tried it and it didn't work with s-on, however it does work with s-off.
I've also read that it fails when trying to flash the Froyo RUU over GB. It didn't brick it or anything, though.
If it does work with S-Off, in theory, if you have 2.3, you could use at XTC clip to achieve S-Off, then use the RUU to downgrade to Froyo, then root, CWM, etc. Right?

I think what they are primarily looking for right now is a temp root for 2.3.3 so we can use the s-off tool. The old root exploit was patched with the 2.3.3 update, without that we can't downgrade and use the tool to achieve s-off, correct me if I'm wrong.
Whatever they do I hope they do it quick I cannot take sense for another day lol.
Yeah, I think it may fail too. I like Sense, I just want to remove the garbage that comes on this thing.
Any RUU from Verizon suck as the one mentioned above, will work on S-OFF, that's the beauty of S-OFF you don't need a file signed by HTC... with S-ON that RUU should flash since it is by HTC, it may say main bootloader is older and fail I'm not sure... I'd put it into a PG32IMG.zip and flash in hboot.. you can do this with the .3 RUU and the .4 exe

Tried .exe method, no go. Tried regular method by renaming, no good, funny part is it doesn't even give a error or nothing when it loads it up, it just goes back to the Bootloader menu. Then i tried the Gold Card method, no go, although i did format my card, but i read that once you have a Gold Card it stays a Gold card. So unfortunately, even if i did root this phone and didn't upgrade to 2.3, because i'm getting a much needed replacement i'm doomed for 2.3 anyway. Whelp i tried.

I tried this way back before I got my xtc clip and the answer is no it will not work with s-on. It looks like its going to work and then displays a message about bootloader or something to that affect. I have it somewhere in these threads.
So here's a question off the top of my head. Probably not possible, but I'll ask anyway.
So the bootloader will only install HTC signed files, and we have HTC signed files of FroYo that the bootloader rejects. So there must be some kind of version check where it'll only flash a file with a higher version number than what's currently on the phone. If we knew where it was checking, would it be possible to modify a FroYo RUU file to report a higher version than the current GB so the bootloader thinks it's installing an upgrade instead of a downgrade?
Like I said, probably not possible, but it would seem to be logical.

If we knew where it was checking, would it be possible to modify a FroYo RUU file to report a higher version than the current GB so the bootloader thinks it's installing an upgrade instead of a downgrade?
Like I said, probably not possible, but it would seem to be logical.

It does make sense, however the signature is generated from the contents of the file. If you change the contents of the file, it invalidates the signature and the boot loader won't load it. That is how HTC prevents you from modifying official HTC files.

If you modified the file. It wouldn't be signed by HTC anymore.
If it is checked by md5, it can be spoofed.

I remember this being discussed before in the Eris forum. I can't find the thread, but I believe that the signature is somehow encrypted, and you would need the encryption key. I believe they even discussed if you could crack the encryption code, and although possible, it was not likely.

I figured that, I just wondered if since all that would presumably need to be changed would be a single digit, if there would be any way to do it without screwing up the signature, like with a hex editor or something.
But, like I said, I figured it wasn't possible...
