I am finding new hidden features and one that I find very cool is the blink feature in Face Unlock. People used to complain that you could fool Face Unlock with a picture of the owner.
Well this really seems to make Face Unlock seem like less of a gimmick and more of a real security tool... that's bad ass
Also I used "Improve Face Matching" from waist level and now I can use face unlock without looking like a toolbag with my phone at shoulder level
Thoughts?
Thanks for the tip! I've exlored it since yesterday and I just LOVE it. Project Butter seems to have vastly improved the "flow" of Android, and the new notificationcenter is awesome.
How agressive is "Blink to unlock"??
I have to open my eyes wide before forcefully close them. At best it takes two or three blinks, at worst it doesn't work.
Is anyone else having problems?

What features of the 5X or what Android apps do you like to show to people?
I am on stock rooted, but most people seem to be impressed with the phones overall speed in pulling up the app drawer, switching between apps, etc. Anything else that sets the 5X apart?

I usually show off the fingerprint scanner right away. Of course it's hard to demonstrate, but it gets the point across. To me, that's the coolest feature of the phone. Especially to my brother who has an iPhone, he said our scanner is way better.

Show off fingerprint scanner?
Aren't you afraid people will use your finger when you are dead drunk or asleep?

Not at all. That's usually the first feature I show off too. I usually start off with telling them it's unlocked and "jailbroken" (nobody understands what rooted means) and that I can basically do whatever I want with my phone. Then show them the fingerprint scanner, let them swipe around the liquid smooth UI and bring up Google FI costing me like $40 a month. I've converted many many people to Nexus and Fi users.
Doing God's work.
The fingerprint scanner. Everything else is pretty much standard or boring even. The slow motion video is kind of neat too if you haven't seen it before but that isn't really a Nexus 5X thing.
My family were using my 5x to snap pictures during a family get together and they all kept mentioning how fast the camera is to open, focus, and capture multiple photos.
They were tapping away at the capture button (like a manual burst mode) and the device never skipped a beat.
I didn't even try and explain to them the implications of HDR+. On my N5 HDR+ took an extra second for the progress circle in the middle before I could take another picture but on the 5x it flashes for maybe 0.1 seconds and you can take the next. I read it continues the HDR+ processing in the background to do this, putting those 6 cores to work.
What bothers you about the OP3? I'd really like to know about the little stuff, since reviewers don't typically take the time to figure out the little annoyances.
For example, does the placement of the fingerprint reader make it slow to unlock the screen if it blanks while you're reading? Does voice typing still work when you're near a noisy street? If there's any "fast photo" function, does it take blurry photos? I'm looking for little annoyances!

Uneven tinting of the Amoled screen is something to be aware of, it can't be fixed with software and you have to look at it all day long. But that's all actually, if the screen was good I would have kept for a longer time then my average of 6 months. But now I will be selling it a while after the Nexus phones hit the market.
Can't think of much. The alert slider could have more options and customization (all, vibrate, silent).
I'm running freedomos 1.6.1-ce so I can't speak for stock, but performance and battery life are great, which are most important to me.
Ok, here's the deal. Fingerprints is already enough advanced tech to protect a phone's content.
Why the heck would someone get laser in his face each time he looks into the phone? First thing I did when I had my Note 7 was disabling the Iris Scanner. I didn't even care if it worked properly or not. Fingerprint scanner was fast enough.
And the infrared light into your eye? really? Like you don't hurt your eyes enough with VR or the phone's screen itself all the time... Now you need an Iris Scanner to beam Infrared into your eye?
Someone sign a petition or something so they stop this technology and put, I don't know, maybe a second speaker for stereo sound instead of a completely useless tech that uses space and Processing.
I like the Iris scanner, it's faster and more reliable than the fingerprint scanner, as for it shining anything in your eyes, if you go out in the sun the light radiation from the iris scanner is nothing compared to the sun.
Just disable it and be done with it. It hardly takes and resources. Some people like it some don't it looks like it's here to stay judging by the rumors of S8, if you don't like it get a different device?
its one of the main sell point , so its definitely be staying , also samsung has never have been into sound department , look at the stock music player ,always sucks , lol and dont ask me why .
No......but thanks for bringing it up.
I use the iris scanner quite a lot actually, my work requires the use of gloves, therefore my fingerprints doesnt work. I used pins before, but there is nothing as fast and covenient as the iris scanner.

I have a similar problem with the fingerprint scanner, due to my work I hold and lift a lot of abrasive materials so my fingerprints tend to be really faint, the vast majority of the time the readers just can't get a read on my fingerprint, the advantage of the iris scanner is it worked pretty much no matter what as you are never affecting your eyes in a way that would make them hard to read.
I love the iris scanner. Let's sign a petition to make sure it's in the note 8 and s8

Signed. I love it. More secure and a 2nd line of defence after fingerprint. I use fingerprint to unlock the device and then have the really sensitive stuff - online banking etc - in the secure folder, locked with the iris scanner. It's a perfect setup imho.
I didn't care for the iris scanner. It didn't feel right to my eyes, plus it wasn't consistent enough as opposed to the fingerprints (which seem to work perfectly for me). But that said, I don't mind if it's part of the phone, I will just disable it again like I did previously.
Doesn't anyone understand that with the iris scanner you can unlock your phone easier and in a secure way when your hands are wet/ dirty. You know, because this is a water-resistant phone
Strange how everyone says keep it yet they weren't so fussed before they were even aware of it. Of course get rid of it, it's an intrusion on one's privacy (which is why it is also wise to tape over the front facing camera).
Lose it for sure, free up some space for battery venting.

strange I think that's how innovative works. nobody was really fussing for a fingerprint reader on phones before 2011
IRIS = SIRI
In plain sight, are you blind? SEE what EYE did there?
since i going to return the note7 tommorow when the box arrives, i going to play with it. when you first setup iris. it said "To protect your eyes, keep the screen at least 8" away during iris recognition", "Do not use iris recognition with infants. Doing so may damage their eyesight". This just makes me uncomfortable to use it.
... Or or just disable it on your phone, like you already did and let the people who like it continue using it, which i believe is the majority.
Not every feature is gonna be a hit with everyone, that's why they implement a cool little toggle for them in the features settings.
a extra hardware is better then none , yeah you paid it with hard earn cash , removing the iris scanner is like removing the ir blaster , a feature that some still like .
Iris scanner is just getting started. I don't use it, but it will be another feature that is more prevalent, not less in future phones. As others have said just disable it if you don't like it. I don't lock my phone often, but when I do I use fingerprint as it is very good on the N7. Fingerprint on my N4 didn't work worth a crap, but works great on the Note 7. It is always good to have choices.
I am largely indifferent. Not a deal breaker for me.

I think it is better to remove the heart rate, O2 sensors. Not many people use it. There are already smart watch, fitness band, & ask the wearable devices able to do that.
Bring back the IR blaster, FM radio, and removable battery...
Hi everyone!
I'm a owner of a new Galaxy S20! Nice, small design, everything is working fine - execpt the Fingerprint sensor...
It is very bad, i scanned the same finger 3 times (as three single fingerprints) but it is still very bad in recognizing my FP! And the speed of unlocking isnt as good too...
Coming from an OnePlus 7t, i am defenitly shocked
For that price as a flagship i expect a bit more...
Maybe some of you can help, or have tips for me for "tuning" my FP sensor!
Thx a lot!
Not really. Making sure your hands are clean helps a lot - it's reading the raised section of your fingerprint as they press against the glass, if your hands are dirty the crevices get full and make it harder to see them.
To be fair, the first gen optical sensor on the 6T and the slightly improved one on the 7T 7 Pro are literally just cameras that compare photos to ones in memory. They're fast because they aren't super accurate. The ultrasonic ones on Samsung devices are more accurate but slow and finnicky. Honestly, I preferred the old style ones on the back, they were better in both regards.
It's slow and usually fails a couple of times on me as well. I switched to using face recognition and I'm very happy with it... I was surprised at how quick it is.
I have scanned my finger twice as well as added face unlock, and works pretty much always
Turn off Optimize Battery Usage for com.samsung.android.biometrics.app in Settings.
I have really dry hands (fingers). Usually takes me a few tries to unlock. And yes I've done all the tricks to try and speed things up.
Taking off the screen protector helps a lot, but ya its as bad as the s10 one.
Scanned my finger 9x's today before it decided to say "oh yeah, I know you." Coming from a OP7 PRO 5G, this is absolute garbage! Going to disable it and try the face recognition.
I am having similar issues. A couple of things that helped:
- disabled battery optimization for com.samsung.android.biometrics.app
- re-enrolled the finger (once) while holding it longer and at a different angles
I am also trying to train myself to touch and wait patiently until it unlocks.
Face recognition is not great imo...
If I disable biometrics app battery optimization and remove fingerprint animation it seems to be a little snappier. I came from 7pro and op has a larger sensor but I got used to s20+ and don't have any issues as long as I place my thumb on the right spot lol.
I left the stock screen protector it came with and I have no issues at all. I see a lot of people complaining that it doesn't work or that it sucks, but i personally love it. NEVER going to use face recognition or whatever else is there.
Same problem
Multiple presses to get in on 2 fingers. Phone keeps telling me to press harder!?!?! The phone will go back to Korea if press any harder.
Does anyone else have a horrible experience with the face unlock on this phone? Mine hardly ever unlocks and when I open it that barely ever works. I'm coming from an iPhone and that was one feature I believe Apple really got right!
I have also had a very inconsistent experience with face unlock on the Fold3. Tried alternate scans with glasses, hat, etc, but no luck.
It is definitely much worse in suboptimal light conditions.
Have no pro lem with mine. It's super quick most of the time and is unlocked just as its at my face level

same. I rotate my head during setup to have the phone recognize me even in weird angles and idk if it helps but seems to improve unlock-ability even at slight side-view angle
I had to turn Face Unlock off because it would keep unlocking my phone when I just wanted to look at the lock screen. I kind of had the opposite problem.
