That's peculiar. I opened SuperSU after the first flash and I also received the message to update my binaries as well, but it worked flawlessly.
lost recovery/root
I too flashed the Jelly Bean rom in a hurry...it took away CWM and root access. SU can't update the binaries and I can't get into recovery to do anything. How can I downgrade back to ICS and install the rooted rom from the XDA thread? Extremely grateful for help with this.
thank you as it works
hi, there,
Good morning.
Installed Jelly Bean into my galaxy nexus last night within minutes
Found this thread and downloaded Super SU. Flashed it in within a minute and had no error messages about upgrading binaries or such.
Tried it out by renaming /system/bug_mailer.sh (pesky whiner script) to something else and it works
Thank you, all
PS:- Keep resting on your laurels, apple

I've been watching the fastboot problem with a little concern, and decided I'm not going to try Jelly Bean until more is known. Pondering this, the only thing I can think of is to try Odin when root and CWM is gone.

1. Install Fastboot
2. flash image recovery
3. flash su
4. then you able to load into recovery and restore previous backup.
what a relief!

Uh... you need to flash a recovery. Easiest way would be to do it through fastboot from your computer. Why does your phone shut off upon connection to the computer?

Okay. Well if you have access to adb and fastboot and your computer recognizes your phone being plugged in you're golden. Download Superuser or SuperSU to your SD card. Turn on USB debugging. Plug your phone into your computer. Boot into your bootloader (either with Power + Volume down + volume up from phone being off) or adb reboot bootloader in terminal. Then you will start using fastboot commands. Type in "fastboot flash recoveryname" (you can use any recover you want, CWM, TWRP, etc.) Then boot into recovery (navigate to recovery in boot loader by pressing up or down volume keys) then flash superuser. Or if you want to go back to an earlier nandroid backup before you flashed JB, that's fine too...

Okay. "Recovery Mode" you're referring to is the bootloader. This is the one with the options where you can "restart bootloader, restart recovery, etc." "Fastboot" you're referring to is the stock recovery. You're saying when you either enter the bootloader or stock recovery, your phone shuts off?

Hi everyone!
First of all, thank you for taking the time to read this!
I have tried to do research on my problem but can't solve it...
The problem is that i can't get into recovery to backup my stock rom.
Specs: HTC Wildfire S, marvel A510e, S-on, Bootloader unlocked, Rooted, Radio-7.54.39.28M, Andriod 2.3.5, HTC sence: 2.1, ClockworkMod 5.0.2.8, Super SU.
I followed the guide: "How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON"on Andriod forums by CafeKampuchia, thumbs up for him It got me this far but, now I want to do the thing for which I rooted my phone in the first place: Installing a costum ROM. Therefore I want to backup my stock ROM.
Installed CWM ROM manager, if use backup current ROM option, the phone reboots and i get the HTC letters on my screen these. After a few sec's they dissapear and my screen goes black and my buttons on the bottom light up. I can touch those but nothing happens besides that it buzzes.... When I it boot the normal way again and use the option 'manage and restore backups' in CMW ROM manager, it shows that there has been made a backup. Not shure if I can trust it though....
When I open in HBOOT (1.09.0099) and push recovery the same thing happens. When I boot the normal way and try to boot into recovery trough CWM ROM manager same thing happens again.
I saw a other topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229&page=2 i tried to flash this recovery to see if a older version might work, but now i have got a problem flashing... See picture: View attachment 1031874. Anyway that is not my main problem, what i really want to make it clear: is to back up my stock ROM.
Many thanks in advantage!
wait for device, you boot your phone to fastboot, and is works
---------- Post added at 09:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:40 AM ----------
I think your hboot is very high, you downgrade it to 1.030000 may be works.
Hey pal if I was you I wouldn't use rom manager, I've known it to have issues over both wildfires. Turn off your phone the normal way. Pull out the battery for 10-20 seconds or so, put it back in and hold volume down + power. Once your hboot is finished scanning the sdcard scroll down to recovery and select it with power. You should go into clockwork mod. Then scroll again with the rockers down to backup and hit it you can do as many backups as your sdcard will carry. So do that and you should have one you can trust. Also before you install your new custom rom read the main page throughout to see if it needs set up in any specific way, like with a special sdcard partition or something. And most important don't forger to wipe your cache, dalvik cache and factory reset the Device from clockwork mod recovery ! This will avoid bootloops good luck

other version of cmw recovery, by following the guide instead of flashing. That gave me the following error.
CID incorret! Update fail! Press <power. to reboot.
ok how did you install your recovery to install super user? did you just use rom manager to do it? as far as i know it only installs a tempoary recovery. which would explain why you are only getting to it through rom manager. ok do you have adb installed onto your pc?
ok take the pg76img.zip attached to this post and put it on the root of your sdcard. then boot into bootloader (not fastboot) and your phone should say it found an update. flash it and it will install clockworkmod to your phone properly. then remove the pg76img.zip from your sdcard and boot back into bootloader, select recovery and with any luck you`ll be sorted. then follow my post above and you`ll be sorted pal

Sorry made a mistake here, i tried to use adb commands while in hboot. When i tried it when the phone was on as usual i could use SU command and the # logo showed up bit than my terminal froze and i couldn't write anything else.
Than i tried it again this time only using the commands as follows:
cd c:\android
adb shell
su
reboot recovery
Difference is that the first time i typed: adb shell su. all together this freezes it up...
Anyhow it sitll doens't work.. i get an empty line in cmd, thats all..View attachment 1033568
But this could be because now a flash of a recovery img doens't work it gives: Waiting for device...

Thing is it will delete the CWM recovery when you leave it so you'll have to reflash it, which is why this is so unstable!
I had the exact same thing as you and this is what I did:
Press the power button to turn it off while it says downloading
Hold both volume buttons down and power on to get into fastboot
Choose recovery
Press power and volume buttons randomly when the red triangle appears until you get stock recovery
Choose Factory Reset
Reboot
You should be able to get back into the rom that way,
to root it you need to boot into fastboot again, reflash the recovery, and sideload the superuser apk

Yeah this is exactly what I did and it worked. I'll wait on flashing anything until there's a stable recovery. I was fairly confident in what I was doing until that happened. Not being able to input commands from cmd prompt made me sick so I'll wait for a dev to release something that works without having to quickly install the drivers again within a 15-20 second timeframe. Too much stress.

THIS WORKED!!
Youre a genius. thanks!
When I try to install the manta drivers manually and tell it to search the same area that it searched and found the android bootloader drivers for fastboot mode it says that the drivers couldn't be found and installed. Am I missing something? Also if i try to do fastboot flash recovery it gives me an error message stating that it cannot determine the image filename for the recovery image.
Well i guess i did it the long way around.
Went to https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#mantarayjop40c
and downloaded the Nexus 10 file. extracted, and the actual files in the Nexus10Root folder.
Opened the flash-all.sh and entered each command manually because it was erroring out running the script.
After the 3rd command it booted right into android!
I have a toro/i515/Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus (the CDMA/LTE one) running a mostly stock (but rooted and with busybox) Jelly Bean JRO03O (Android 4.1.1).
I screwed up my build.prop (and can't boot normally), so I attempted to boot into CWMR 6. To my surprise, cold booting holding the Vol + button started to proceed with a normal boot. So I cold booted with the Vol - button held.
And that shocked me even more. I'm staring at ODIN Mode. WTF? When did ODIN get on my phone? What happened to the bootloader where I could select booting into recovery, or the bootloader, or normal booting?
I've been scouring Google and this forum, and many other forums, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to boot this thing into a custom recovery so I can fix my build.prop through adb.
I'm at a loss. I suck at using ODIN (I only started using it recently when I bought my GTab2 10.1 GT-P5113).
How am I supposed to hack my phone when I can't use ADB, fastboot, or a custom recovery (booting normally hangs also)?
The only thing I don't want to do for a repair is a full wipe. I don't have a way of backing up my data without ADB.
I've tried enclosing various boot, bootloader, and recovery images (img files) into tar files (archives) and sending them to the phone via ODIN using the PDA and/or the BOOTLOADER button(s). I've tried to see if Wug's Toolkit would talk to my phone via ODIN.

Help!!! Please!!!
Any of the following will do:
1. Tell me how to get adb working.
2. Tell me how to revert ODIN back to the normal boot/bootloader (that works with fastboot) - this would be best. ODIN sucks.
3. Tell me how to get to my files via ODIN.
Please help. This sucks.
*sheepish grin* - I forgot about holding BOTH Vol + and Vol - at the same time while cold booting.
(I can at least get into fastboot mode now)...
From fastboot, boot to custom recovery (use vol keys to highlight, power to select), reflash rom.
Or
From fastboot, flash stock but dont flash userdata.img.

The very same thing happened to me today.
I was on 4.2 JB (custom stock rom, only rooted) and I received a software update....it failed at doing it and then said something about not losing root. I checked YES and boom....wont boot. Stuck at ODIN...
Odin recognizes it but fails at flashing.
Fastboot works and boots into cwm recovery....but it wont boot into android...
What should I do...?
Sorry if I am rude by asking here.

use adb to push a rom while on a custom recovery. it seems you need to read them again, and pay attention to it.

After posting the above, I meant to indicate that this thread could be closed. I knew exactly what to do now that I could finally get into fastboot.
Maybe ODIN was on my phone all along, but I could almost swear that I used to get into fastboot by holding Vol - while cold booting, and that I could get into recovery by Holding Vol + while cold booting. I don't remember ODIN being there at all.
Anyway, the bottom line:
Fastboot loads with Vol + AND Vol - held down while cold booting.
I was able to reflash boot, bootloader, and custom recovery with fastboot.
I was able to boot into custom recovery from fastboot.
Once CWMR 6 was running on my phone in recovery mode, I was able to mount /system from the recovery menu, to use adb to pull /system/build.prop, to edit it, to use adb to push build.prop back to /system, and finally to use adb to change permissions on build.prop back to 644.
Am I crazy? Was ODIN always on my VzW GNex?
Was it always loaded when holding Vol - down during a cold boot?
Or were the Vol - and Vol + buttons (individually) originally used for booting fastboot mode and recovery mode?
If I had forgotten that, then I haven't be hacking my phone enough, as I haven't been in fastboot in a long time.

question/comment to old post
This is an old post I'm responding to but my A500 has been bricked for over a year. I just read, click the lock button and when I did, on the screen is "Bootloader v0.03.12 ICS:: Starting Fastboot USB download protocol and found a related post referencing "Odin". I, too, want to know how that got onto my tablet. Perhaps from the update.zip? Now I can't find any relevant information nor files to download which aren't corrupt or tampered with. Can someone perhaps take a moment to outline a plan of action for me and the significant files? I will gladly "donate" to whomever and by "time". Thx (little grey haired old lady) Smiles4Miles, VMD

Nothing seems to change.

Hi,
I've really big problem and i hope that here i get sugestion...
1, I try flash new ROM to my phone. I copy ROM to "SD card" but in wrong version.
After this I into Flashtool get new Kernel and new ver. of TWRecovery. Then I go to recovery and start flashing as every time before...
2, But now I'm in bad sittuation. I can only get into recovery... When i want to go to bootloger, i can't. Every time when I go to bootloger from recovery, i'm back in recovery. Every time is phone reaction the same as I hold power up button+vol. up. And I'm only in recovery.
When I want transfer some ROM to phone, I can't. Cose when I Mount USB massstorage I see phone as "Elementary sys device". I have install ABD device drivers...
Changelog I can't get you, cose it's in "SD card"...
3, Please, Show me "the way" out of this sh*t... I use HTC HD2 few years, all time flashing. Now I use Xperia S for 3 yr. All time flashing. But now I'm in a wrong way ind can't get my phone to standby

Code:
adb push /path/to/ROM.zip /sdcard/
Then flash the ROM via recovery!

Yes, I'm in TWRP, exactly v.2.8.0.1, from topic of your ROM. Bud now I can't connect phone via ABD drivers. I try it via apps and two ways via Commans window.
I'm only in TWRP. I can't get to fastboot, I can't install ROM now, phone reaction is the same as I hold power up+vol up button.
I need one of two ways... 1,get phone connected with PC via fastboot to flash new kernel, boot.img and at least your ROM
2,get phone connected with PC via mass storage, to get some old ROM, flash it and get to fastboot...

Anyways, lets start from basic. Can You try un-installing and installing the fastboot drivers? Because I suspect that's why You are not able to enter into fastboot mode.

Just a sec, what combination do You use to go into bootloader? Power up+volume up? That is not what Yo do, You disconnect the phone from cable, and then turn off the phone. Then just press volume up, and connect the phone. No other button is needed to be pressed.

So You can't even go into bootloader now? That's weird and also makes this a bit complicated! Because You need to be able to go into bootloader mode to flash a new kernel which has recovery. Hope You are pressing only volume while connecting phone to PC. Drivers are fine as You were able to flash a kernel earlier. Which Kernel did You flash first? If You are able to go into bootloader, then flash this kernel via fastboot mode.

So You were able to flash the kernel I gave? Then You should be able to boot into CWM recovery. The Kernel logo will be of a Android bot.
Hey all, little embarrassing coming here for this, but I'm in a little bit of a jam. I'm new to flashing custom ROMs, and I was trying to flash my first today, and managed to screw everything up in the process. I can boot into Clockwork mod via my PC, and I can still do everything I need to from there, but I was stupid, and didn't make a Nandroid backup before doing so. So I was wondering if anyone here could lend me theirs that I could slap onto an SD card, and recover my phone with. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Just so we're clear, this isn't an attempt to get personal information. I will take any backups you have, with or without an unlocked bootloader, with or without rooting, with or without custom ROM, anything. Heck, I'd prefer to have it as close to stock as possible, so I can do everything myself. I just need a bit of a bailout here.
Shameful self-bump. I could still really use some help here.

EDIT: Nevermind, seems I ADB recognizes the device with CWM running. Now I gotta see where to go from there.
Now I've encountered problem number 2: I didn't allow USB debugging for the computer I'm using (USB debugging is ticked in the settings [or at least I think it is], but it's not authorized for my PC). So here's the question: Can I authorize it through Minimal ADB and Fastboot?
Triple post, but it's with a question. I'm nearly positive that this whole ordeal is going on because I tried to boot into recovery mode with the TWRP app when no recovery was available. So now the question is, is there any way I can stop the phone from trying to boot into recovery so I can install a proper one?
Turn it off, then press volume up + power when vibrates, release power while holding volume up, then release volume up as well, it should boot into bootloader where you can fastboot a new recovery.

Tried that. Doesn't work. Like I said, it keeps booting into the psudo-recovery mode thing. I can't even boot into the bootloader from there.

Have u tried to boot into Fastboot from your Cm recovery? If not, there is a way to make the stock firmware flushable by twrp or cm recovery. I don't feel like typing the whole process but if u look around the forum for a sec u should find it pretty easily. Once u do that, everything will be factory again.

I have tried booting from CWM, but TWRP overrides it still. I'll look into flashing stock firmware through CWM though.
