I was wondering if there is actually any coding differences between any of the leaked modems. Are they just adding a modem into the leaks like there are final ota's? I've been installing modems as they come out and have not noticed any appreciable differences but that could be just where i live.
Most of them are the same but different build number.

Differences
Well I dont' know how much is CM9 getting better. But I seem to get differences in reception and battery life with different modems. Newest ones seem the best. You might just be getting incremental improvements that you don't notice, or service is already pretty good in your area so you don't notice the better reception in bad areas.
I was beginning to wonder if they were just different flavored sugar pills (placebo).

Definitely placebo.
better reception
I got a better reception and speed going from EL29 to FF18. i mean its not much. but went from -96dB to -91dB for my reception.

I'm on [UPDATE][KERNEL][ROM]tFF18 with FF18 repack with AGAT recovery 0.2.1 rom with ff18 modem and its a big improvement over other roms/modems I've tried.. Net speeds are up from around 1.5 mbs d/l to almost 3 mbs and I get 3-4 bars on the phone signal instead of 1 maybe 2.. And I'm in the mountains of Tn.

I know how you feel. In NH and VT, they don't believe in cell towers. Alone with the mts too reception can be really horrible, but with FF18 modem it has improved.

Hello everybody. I updated from eg30 (I only had the phone for a day and had one LOS on eg30) and went to ek02. I wanted to create this thread for all the brave souls who updated to let everyone know if it's worth losing the eg30. I haven't been running it too long... only ~ten hours or so. I haven't had LOS yet. As far as reception, speeds, quality, etc. I have no idea; I just got the phone yesterday night.
Let's try and keep this organized. If you want to report your findings on ek02 please do so in this format:
Previous LOS ~frequency (and Modem version):
With ek02, LOS frequency(if any... hopefully, none):
data speeds/ reception on old modem:
data speeds/ reception on ek02:
Just a courtesy thread for those who are laying back and waiting.
Edit: a few people brought up a good point. Kernel matters! Include kernel observations too.
Would love to see some reports. For those on eg30 that are going to update to ek02 run some speed tests first then update and run more and compare them. Thanks.

Pretty much my thoughts. Hopefully people will actually post their results in this thread to help others who haven't updated
With the EG31 modem and EG31 [or EK02] stock kernel, I have not have one LOS or ghost LOS.
Been 12 days.
I never got them while I was on the EG30 or 31 stock kernel. I would get los at least once a day on every custom kernel.
Today I got los (on the EK02 modem and Lostkernel) but it seemed to happen when the signal was handed off from my airave to the normal mobile signal. Once I left airave coverage I was looking at my phone. I saw it disconnect from it, my bars came back (full) but no 3g icon or data until I rebooted. I just flashed the stock Ek02 kernel so hopefully I wont get it again like I didnt on the other two stock pulled kernels
I'm referring to just the modem:, not the kernel.

Considering that they are both contributing factors (although the modem is more so) they are both relevant

Same here and I went to some known bad spots too and the EK02 kernel with EG31 modem seems to be working really well so far. The kernel does play a role so hopefully we will see some comparisons using same kernel

Yeah Kernel plays a big part f,sure.
LOST kernel los has been out of control , many of its users went back stock kernel finding los to be little to none.
Why thats ignored placing majority of blame on modem is beyond me.
I knew that...(not really ) I'll add kernel to the op. Thanks

I'm running both the EK02 kernel with the EK02 modem. Not one LoS to speak of yet (running since about 1pm yesterday). The bars don't jump around as much, I seem to be getting a better signal. Before this I was running the Rogue stock kernel and had the EG30 modem (of course).
As far as speeds, that's difficult to say given all the variables on a mobile connection. So far though the 3G download speeds seem to be higher, double what they were almost. That doesn't say much when they were 7 - 24kBps before. Now I'm looking at 30 - 50+kBps. Like I said, that could just be a fluke so more testing will need to be done. WiMax has about the same speeds too, was 380kBps average, now it's around 440kBps. - Those are kiloBYTES not kiloBITS for those that get confused.
The kernel seems to be a significant improvement though. Benchmarking scores went up on Antutu, Quadrant, and Linpak. The system had no lag before so without benchmarking you really can't tell.
Lastly, the ROM updates are nice I guess. A few icon changes and the overscroll glow has now been changed to blue, as opposed to the yellow it was before. Other than that nothing fancy or notable has changed from what I can tell.
One addition here, the battery life is very noticeable with the update. For me at least - it drains significantly slower than the previous stock kernel.
I havent had LoS or ghost LoS ever since I installed the modem and the kernel, I usually get 3 a day but 18 hours in, nothing, nada.
I have noticed the phone "snappier" than normal though
Was anybody getting random hot reboots with any eg31 kernels? If you have, did the ek02 kernel remedy that? Others and myself have been trying to solve our hot reboot issue (in Calkulin's thread). We don't know what is causing them for a select few of us.
I flashed the ek02 kernel on blazer rom and still get hot reboots. I've tried almost every rom with different kernel combos and still get them. Got them on stock eg30 and eg31 kernels and modems.

Can you either post here or pm me a list of apps you have? I had these reboots on my Evo 3d and I'm using the same apps. Let's compare the apps that we have... because as of right now, the only variable I haven't tried is a rogue app. :/
I don't think it's an app but maybe a custom script used by the rom developers. The only time I didn't get the reboot is by going back to the stock rom.

If it was a script.... wouldn't everyone be getting these issues? Some are getting it on every single rom too.
If you're on Calk's do you think it's the undervolt?
just updated mine a couple of hours ago, so this may be a bit premature, but I dont really see any increases in network speed. When using the speedtest app the before and after results were about the same. That being said I am at work, where I get a halfway decent signal if I m outside the building. The true test will be when I get home tonight. Aside from network speed being the same everything else seems pretty much unchanged, with the exception of the phone seeming to be a bit more snappy, although it could just be in my head. Lin pack scores did seem a bit higher, but nothing to go crazy over. I have only had one LOS since launch day, so that isnt really an issue.
I just wanted to chime in with my experience after flashing the EK02 modem. I flashed it about 3 hours ago, after I had received 2 LOS at work this morning.. and typically been getting at least 3-4 a day (stock pulled kernel with CMW - Lost kernel was no better)
So far I haven't received any LOS but I've been getting the best 3G speeds I've seen yet. I was getting around 15KBps average in my office (and that is after months of running speed tests!) and I just ran a few tests now and I'm getting ~70KBps after 3 runs. Very noticeable improvement although it isn't spectacular, much more acceptable. I just compared it to my previous speedtest.net result history and it's by far the best speeds I've gotten since I've owned the phone in this same exact location (my desk at work)
Thanks again to everyone involved getting us this leaked firmware!
I don't think so. I was on calks, flashed a stock kernel, took out the undervolt script and still got the reboots.
Again, I never got them on a stock rom, only custom ones.
I'm currently on eg30 radio rooted blazer v3 and gunslinger and I'm not to happy with wifi downstream and upstream speeds. If I changed my radio to a newer version will I see noticeable benefits in connection and batter life? Also, what radio do you guys recommend?

i'm happy with EL29 so far. My speeds have been about the same for wifi but I seem to get a slightly better wifi signal with EL29. On EG30 and EK02, i couldn't get a signal in the restroom here at work (TMI?). I would always have to switch to 3G to get a connection. On EL29, i get barely one bar on my wifi connection, but its enough for me to use it.
Nothing worse than being stuck on the can without an internet connection.
EL29 is the latest and next official. Most people have seen a significant improvement and no LOS. You have nothing to loose by using EL29.

Huh, and I thought I was the only one using EG30 modem. I get the best 3g and WiFi speeds with the least amount of battery drain with the original modem. And I've tried all the others, including EL29. Guess it's just my phone.
And, in the 4 months I've had this phone on EG30, never once got LOS...
I realize this is an endless debate depending on lots of different factors. That being said, I was curious what people's experience has been with different modems in the Dallas/Metroplex area. I've run EK02 and El13 to mixed results on each, all on Calk's various releases. I was just wondering if anyone in DFW area had any particularly good experience with signal and battery life. If so, could you share your setup?
Thanks!

I'm in Arlington and EL13 gives me the best signal and battery life. My office in Irving gets bad cell signal on EL29, but when I switched to EL13, I see bars on the phone. I've tried all modems and El13 is the best for me.
ROM: Calk 2.9
Kernel: Rogue stock EL29
Modem: EL13
Battery life: 24-30 total hours with intermittent use. Not that heavy a user, but I use it enough for my purposes
Its all trial and error.

yeah it's all trial and error, Here in Grand Prairie I'm currently using FB15 modem. I really need to change that. When I was using EL29 I had pretty good signal. But with EL13 I had horrible signal.
you just have to try them, modems affect every phone differently. also don't just flash and judge.
when you change your modem update your prl and profile, then give the modem a few days to settle in to find out if it actually works better for you
Thanks, all, I appreciate the feedback.
I noticed on all CM9/AOKP based roms on the T989, my 4G data isn't as fast. By comparison on stock and Darkside roms, My speed tests are consistently double-digit download (10-14 kbps) and around 3kbps upload. But on CM9/AOKP based roms, I don't get above 5 kbps down, and 2 kbps up. These are the typical speeds I would be getting on an HSPA+ 21 phone.
Do we have any information on why this is? Do CM9/AOKP not support HSPA+ 42? Is there a script I can run to improve this?
Thank you in advance.
I noticed the the same thing. On tw ics I normally get 8-18mbps. Aokp and cm9 5-8mbps but good enough

I have had sporadic success getting 13 mbps by flashing the le1 radio included with darkside. For the most part though i cant use cm9/aokp for this reason, no one really knows why to my understanding.
I flashed one of the Tellus radios and it's working very well for me. Running AOKP

I agree-I have the same issue. I'm on CM9 and love it but it's vever been as fast as the Dark Side roms.
lol but noooooooo everyone looooves CM roms because they don't have bugs, issues or anything
Try flashing one of the modems for the Darkside ROMs when you flash an AOKP or CM based rom?
That should do the trick. Probably is just a modem issue over anything else.

No it's not a modem issue. I've already tried all the Darkside modems and the issue is the same and consistent. I truly believe whatever makes HSPA+ 42 work on stock and darkside is not implemented on the CM9/AOKP roms, because the speeds I get are consistent with what people with Nexus phones in my area on T-Mobile get, and they only use HSPA+ 21.
I've gotten a best of 18.50Mbps down on AOKP.

Any particular radio/kernal combo?
just the 6/15 build, i didn't flash any other radio/kernel. now i'm on the 7/3 build and am getting about 10Mbps down inside my office building (which has pretty bad reception, the 18Mbps was inside a house).

Yea no joy with that, reg build without any radios fetches me 8 Mbps max in an area that i get 13 Mbps.
Yes, I noticed a slow down from GB to stock (debloated & rooted) ICS ROMs... But it seems like AOKP may be even a little slower than that.
I've seen some users post lines that you can replace in the build.prop file which they said gave them faster speeds on AOKP... but then people just stopped talking about them.
The user did say that the only way he could see a difference in speeds using the build.prop fix was to tether his phone to another device and do the speedtest on it... For some reason he was certain that speedtest.net was reporting lower numbers for AOKP ROMs, but the speed was still there... You'll have to go back and read the AOKP thread in the general section to find it.

I don't know about that I flashed UVLE1 radio from darkside and actually got speed test results of about 12 Mbps to 13 for a few hours. After about a half day of use it dropped back down to 8. Reflashed the radio and it still wouldn't go back up.

I've tried several speed tests, not just speedtest.net and I get the same consistent results of slower data speeds. As far as real-world results, I have seen problems streaming video on PLEX on 4G with CM9/AOKP roms that work just fine with Darkside. So it's not just an issue with speedtest. Something is different. Would love to have some input on this from Eugene or Yaldak or someone like that.

Imma noob but I've been testing and...
So far with jelly bean I've noticed the modems change your speed a little but the best way to get speeds is tweak your wimax hidden menu. Doubled my speeds on FI03 (best for my area) I do recommend u try ff18. Seems to work best with most ppl. Wasn't my case but it wasn't horrible.

I've gotten the best signal with FH13 so far. I tried out FF18 and I was able to get a 4G signal where I wasn't able to with FH13. Even though I was able to connect to 4G in these areas, I still got better speeds in the same area with 3G on FH13. Try flashing different modems and do some speed tests to figure out which modem works best for you!
fi25 works great for me. low ping and high uploads :good:
