Sprint adds Kansas City and Baltimore to list of LTE markets

If you've been waiting to see if your 'hood would be next up for Sprint to bless with a shiny new*LTE networkwe've got some potentially good news: by mid-2012 both Kansas City (regardless of what side of the Kansas / Missouri border you happen to be on) and Baltimore will be online. Those two cities will bring the total number of Sprint LTE markets to six, as they join the previously announced Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta. The carrier and CEO Dan Hesse refused to be any more specific about a launch date on today's earnings call, though, we can tell you the service should be launching alongside the*Galaxy Nexus,LG Viper*and a Sierra Wireless mobile hotspot capable of connecting via CDMA, WiMAX and LTE. I'm excited since I live in Overland Park. That being said, I won't be enjoying the LTE too much since I have this phone. Guess I'll start saving now.

I was a bit shocked KC wasn't announced from the start. I knew or wouldn't take long. I bet they already have lte in Overland Park so they could test the new phones. Plus, the improved cdma will be great. I have horrible signal in my neighborhood(Briarcliff). The airrave helps a lot. Tye funny thing is they mentioned KU vs MU in the press release even though we all know that the chances of playing anymore are slim. Anyways, it is a pointless rivalry. KU sucks just like Johnson County and the rest of those cake eaters. Lol

I was told a while back it was kind of going to rollout in reverse meaning markets that don't have 4g would get the LTE first then the markets with WiMax would follow. ...in New Jersey now and the 3g has been great here. I haven't tested 4g much since I have Fios in the house..edit..I would imagine the major cities would have to follow very soon after because they need that advertising money...meaning L.A. and New York probably wont be far behind. Jersey represent!

When Hess anounced lte first like 5 months ago when they said that they would be going to lte they would start with areas that never got wimax and what do you know sprint fuxing lies again .... no phoenix on the list ...... but all cities with wimax .... stupid back asswards sprint ...you would think when they were testing lte it was phoenix they tested in with clear ....but don't announce it as one of their first cities ...6th largest in nation always screwed

there's a network vision site in north jersey right now. just googled it... Branchburg, NJ. about an hour drive for me.. but i've been considering making the drive to test it.

I'm fortunate to be in an area where sprint has great coverage, and speeds are really good. I'm usually getting bandwidth test speeds of over 1 mb/s, and sometimes even crest the 2 mb/s mark in the evenings. I rarely use 4G, one because my desk is on the other side of the building from the tower, so the signal barely makes it to my desk, and at home, it isn't all that great, either. I'll be curious to see if my data speeds improve on 3G once the NV initiative hits my neck of the woods. I'm also one of the first metros listed to get LTE when it comes out, but will wait to get a compatiable device until the Galaxy Nexus hits CL/Ebay for a decent discount.

So, I went with sprint because of the truly unlimited data plan, and this phone. I love my phone, I love the great development community we have, great ROMs. Everything about the phone is great. But I am extremely annoyed with Sprints data service. When I bought the phone I was aware there wasn't 4G in my area worth mentioning, I figured 3G would be fine. Well its not. Average speed test scores of 56 kbps. Abysmal. I had also assumed at some point, slowly the 4G would improve as they added towers. Now Sprint has decided to roll with LTE instead. Probably a smart choice but I feel like I have been screwed over. metro Detroit has some of the slowest 3G there is. So of sprint rolls out LYE this year are we gonna have to riot in the streets or do you think they plan to work with people contracted into WiMax phones?

Detroit did suck for 3g speeds while I was there over xmas. However Sprint going LTE could also help 3G users since the towers in general are being upgraded the 3G data speeds should also get better.

saw a few ppl in detroit today with increased speeds.. nv is coming.

I was going to mention the same thing. As the towers get upgrades to LTE they also should be getting capacity upgrades to help 3G as well.
One thing to remember is that this will take time. WiMax will not go away over night. Im sure they will support WiMax for 2-4 years from now. GIving everyone time to outgrow their current WiMax device and upgrade to a LTE device.

Well in Reno Nevada we've been waiting on 4g for months and my 3g is worse. Through out most of the city I get maybe 5-10 kbs. At one point I had about 30 but still that's ridiculous Ive also tried very close to several towers and still same speeds sprint sucks with their 3g and 4g. Verizon has it out here but unwanted true unlimited. We should riot in the streets

my data speeds were crazy slow too, until i installed the FB series modems...1.5m down and 2 up!

OP give a corporate PRL and Roam Control a go.

Believe WiMax will be supported till 2015 if I remember the press release correctly.

I had this same complaint. But most people these days do not expect much (past two months) from tech companies anymore so don't expect any sympathy. look for my old thread.
I think we should be offered if not a return, at least an early upgrade to an lte phone.

i also made a thread about this, sprints data service sucks all together I had verizon before and since my wife decided to switch us i hate my phone experience not because of the phone but the service

Sprint 4G LTE is here!!

I looked at my notification bar and had full 4G bars. I couldn't believe it!
Edit: And full bars which I never got on regular 4G. I'm in San Antonio btw.

Wow, things are looking up for Sprint. I left them months ago back when I had my EVO 3D. I could not stand terrible 3G and coverage.

That's a lot faster than some of the other Sprint LTE Tests I've seen. Probably not "live" yet, but testing. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Well Sprint's LTE markets won't even be in the double digits until 2013. And a couple years after that to be "nationwide coverage". The vast majority of Sprint's customers will be on 3G for the foreseeable future.

Sprint it's supposed to be done with lte by the end of2013 where U get your info...that is every tower with 3g will have lte
It's not just Sprint doing the roll out it was broken into like 5 areas and Samsung ericsson lucent are working on it too....

Good speeds, but the ping is about 3 times what I see with LTE on VZW

I haven't seen anyone else talking about the Sprint LTE. Have they just been testing it in different areas or have you seen official Sprint tests? I googled, but couldn't find anyone else talking about it. I'd be interested to see what other people's experience with it was, i.e. if it has been improving, signal strength, etc.
And sadly it lasted less than an hour. Luckily I caught it. But everything was extremely fast. It was awesome. If LTE gets full bars in my house I might consider getting rid of my internet...

And why don't I? Show me their national WiMax coverage that they rolled out in the last 2 years.... right, it doesn't exist. Same will be for LTE. Sorry, but just because Sprint says they're going to roll it out by the end of 2013 doesn't mean anything to me or any other slightly skeptical person.
Believe me, I'm pulling for them. I'd love to see Sprint step it up big time and challenge AT&T and Verizon's LTE efforts, but I find it hard to believe that Sprint will ever be able to catch up. Even if they completely covered their 3G network with LTE in that time (which they just can't physically/monetarily do), they won't be catching Verizon or even AT&T by that point.

Lol right sprint won't do it everyone forgets clear was the primary doing the rollouts and yeah. The BOD wants this to happen I am sure they will make sure it happens by the deadline or before and then once that is done they can hopefully jump it down to the 800mhz band as well. I think it will and if not 24 months from now I will move on but there are more posts of LTE then I saw of WiMAX when that started.
Not to mention other cell companies that work with sprint well one anyways atm is also helping.

When Sprint saw the writing on the wall for WiMax, they did the smart thing and stopped investing in it.
Good for them. They instead began their LTE preparations along with beginning their Network Vision deployment. They accelerated their 800mhz refarm.
Believe me, I'm pulling for them. I'd love to see Sprint step it up big time and challenge AT&T and Verizon's LTE efforts, but I find it hard to believe that Sprint will ever be able to catch up. Sprint has never been able to compete on coverage - 4g or otherwise. Hell, their native CDMA network is smaller than T-Mobile's network. That said, Sprint has a big ol boatload of spectrum, which means they can continue to provide unlimited data (or eventually, faster speeds) far longer than their competition can.
Now, I'm a T-Mobile customer as well as a Sprint customer, and was about to drop my Sprint line for a prepaid line, but Sprint (and T-Mobile) are on the upswing and I very much like the progress they're making.

I think Sprint could potentially do better than AT&T with their LTE rollout as AT&T seems to be going pretty slowly about it. However, VZW is lighting up more and more areas every few weeks, so I don't think anyone will catch them until VZW has started moving to another network standard. I have read that Sprint's LTE plans are very aggressive, so it could just be they are installing and testing the network in several large markets right now to turn on several cities all at once rather than just a small handful like AT&T did at the start.

Interesting theory, but Verizon and even ATT will complete their rollout before Sprint does. So by the time Sprint gets to enjoying LTE across the network, Verizon and ATT will be looking at deploying VoLTE.
They can have buttloads of spectrum, but they don't have the resources to compete with rollouts or to to advance in a timely manner. They will always be playing third base.
Heck, MetroPCS rolled out LTE before them (Verizon too, for that matter).

I managed to get a weak signal in parts of the KC metro, probably coming from the area around the Sprint Campus in Overland Park. I may drive closer later today and see what kind of speed I can get.

What happens to WiMax phones now there's LTE?

I was wondering since LTE is rolling out (at least here in Dallas it is), what happens to ppl with WiMax phones? I'm sure we'll still be able to use it, but shouldn't we be able to enjoy the network also? I'm not saying give everybody free phones, but at least make it possible for everybody to get a LTE phone, especially those who have suffered thru these horrible "4G" years. We spend our money on "Data plans" every month, but who actually enjoys their coverage? I know its alot of ppl who agree with me cause i see it all the time in these forums. Anybody have an idea as to whats up with this?

You're fortunate you actually have 4g... I've been paying for 4g for 3 years, and the closes tower to me is 90 miles away. I have yet to hop on 4g on my epic 4G Touch.
I do agree with you, though.... They should give some sort of upgrade option.

I was told at the sprint store Wimax will be used for the pre paid services like boost mobile so they too can jump on the 4g band wagon. While the rest of us like yourself who have been waiting for a larger 4g coverage are now forced into a different 4g network. Although LTE is much better by far.

To sum this all up for you as a Sprint Representative that I am.....
-LTE is another ADD-ON of 4G that Sprint is rolling out with called "Network Vision". The addon/change is expected to be completely completed by the END of 2013. All future smartphones will only be LTE compatible. All CURRENT smartphone with WiMax will not be compatible on LTE 4G networks. Along with this, there is to be increased 3G as well (call quality and data speeds and fewer dropped calls and increased coverage overall).
-When 4G first came out there was a $10 charge (before most carriers even had limited data packages) now that other carriers have Limited packages the $10 premium is only required for SMARTPHONES ONLY. Whether or not you have "4G" or not for your Sprint smartphone. You can even have a "non-smartphone" on a data plan and NOT pay the $10 premium as it applys to ONLY smartphones.
-WiMax WILL continue to be with sprint ONLY at this current time. There is NO talk of Boost, Virgin Mobile, etc "other carriers" signing with "Clear-Wire" (WiMax) for their network. They will remain on Sprint's 3G network.
Hope that clears the air about some pondering questions.. Anything else just let me know..

Lately wimax is the only reason I have not hurled bricks through the windows of my local Sprint stores. Thankfully I get a good 4g signal at home and work because 3g has been unusable more often than not the last 6 months. Also in Sept I'm moving to a city (of over a million ppl) that is not on the first or 2nd round of LTE rollout so a phone with LTE would be worthless to me. I will probably be rocking my E4GT for the full duration of my contract.

I understand that.. I currently have the Epic 4G Touch. Cause to me having like an EVO 4G LTE or the Galaxy SIII is pointless if I cant use 4G yet sense I'm not in an LTE area yet and the recently released smartphones and future smartphones dont have WiMax capabilities..
Along with that by the time I get LTE there'll be better newer phones..

Just jumped from sprint

After getting tired of the lack of data connection issues at sprint I jumped over to T-Mobile. While I'm sure it will be a better experience than I had at sprint, I would like to know how all your experiences have been

I love it man. I've never lost service. I live in Dayton Ohio and there's 4G LTE everywhere here.

Didn't realize how bad Sprint is until I switched to T-Mobile last year......

I do a lot of traveling for work and I used to be a Sprint subscriber as well. I will say that while T-Mobile's speeds are definitely better, Sprint has a better overall network IMO. I often find myself either struggling to find T-Mobile signal, Roaming on AT&T (If it even lets me), or I'm forced to deal with horrible 2G speeds (GPRS). Outside of major cities the majority of the coverage areas are 2G whereas on Sprint it is mostly 3G because if you had to roam you were on Verizon. If you thought Sprint's 3G was slow, wait until you experience T-Mobile's 2G lol.
If you generally reside in or around the larger cities then you have nothing to worry about. My experience is based on what I see everywhere I go... and I go to some pretty remote places and lots of smaller towns. Also, keep in mind that my experience with Sprint was before they implemented Spark and HD Voice, but being as a resident of San Antonio I did get to experience most of what their "Network Vision" had to offer.
As a matter of fact, the images in my signature were from when I was using Sprint. It was shortly after they first implemented LTE... And I lived approximately 45 miles outside of the city in the country. Those were some damn good speeds for being so far out, but I only lived about 1 mile from the tower lol. I only get 2G with T-Mobile out there and the 3G cuts off about 5 miles shy of that town. BUT, before switching to T-Mobile the Sprint speeds in that area had gone way down as more and more people got LTE phones. Last I checked, it was down to 7Mb/s Down and 2Mb/s Up.

Where I live north of San Francisco sprint had some areas of decent 4g but not at my house or at work. It also seems like the battery in my t mobile m8 lasts much longer. Maybe having a strong signal helps

former sprint customer, totally thrilled with T Mobile in the Chicago area...Even though Chicago was one of the first places with Sprint's "new" network, we left them 6 months ago when my wife and son couldn't even make phone calls from our house with their M7 phones; ever since we went TMO, we've never dropped a call anywhere in Chicagoland, data speeds are great, and their customer service has been fantastic for us.
towards the end of having sprint, we definitely noticed a change in how they treated customers, obviously a new way of doing things brought over by their new owners...much less likely to issue credits for problems, and even had the nerve to charge us TAX on our cancellation fees!!
Sorry Sprint, NEVER again, and if you merge with TMO, we will leave for another option.

I do a lot of traveling for work and I used to be a Sprint subscriber as well. I will say that while T-Mobile's speeds are definitely better, Sprint has a better overall network IMO. I often find myself either struggling to find T-Mobile signal, Roaming on AT&T (If it even lets me), or I'm forced to deal with horrible 2G speeds (GPRS). Outside of major cities the majority of the coverage areas are 2G whereas on Sprint it is mostly 3G because if you had to roam you were on Verizon. If you thought Sprint's 3G was slow, wait until you experience T-Mobile's 2G lol.
If you generally reside in or around the larger cities then you have nothing to worry about. My experience is based on what I see everywhere I go... and I go to some pretty remote places and lots of smaller towns. Also, keep in mind that my experience with Sprint was before they implemented Spark and HD Voice, but being as a resident of San Antonio I did get to experience most of what their "Network Vision" had to offer.
As a matter of fact, the images in my signature were from when I was using Sprint. It was shortly after they first implemented LTE... And I lived approximately 45 miles outside of the city in the country. Those were some damn good speeds for being so far out, but I only lived about 1 mile from the tower lol. I only get 2G with T-Mobile out there and the 3G cuts off about 5 miles shy of that town. BUT, before switching to T-Mobile the Sprint speeds in that area had gone way down as more and more people got LTE phones. Last I checked, it was down to 7Mb/s Down and 2Mb/s Up.

Are you in La Vernia? If so T-Mobile will finally be upgrading the 2G to LTE in the next few months! I'm in San ANtonio too and hate that there is no LTE or 4G down 87 all the way until you hit Victoria.

I was with Sprint for about 12 years and just finally got fed up waiting for them to figure out how to get 4G rolled out properly, so I switched to TM when I purchased the M8 a few months ago.
Now that I'm on TM, I kick myself for not switching over sooner. With unlimited everything and the fact that 4G is so fast in my area, I don't even bother with switching on wifi. (I rarely stream video to the phone, so no real need for wifi)

I'm here in beaver creek and I'm literally just outside of the coverage area, I get lte but 5mbs down and about 4 up. But out and about I'm finally getting up to about 26mbs down.

I was with Sprint for over 10 years, then about a year and a half ago i switched to T-Mobile. Im so glad i did. I live in a major metropolitan area so coverage is always good for me.
As others have mentioned living in suburbs or travelling might get you some dead spots. So try the network out and then make a final decision.

My m8 gets great reception but my Daughters iPhone 5s is not so good. I guess that's what she gets for using an iPhone....... Right

in case anyone is curious about tmobile coverage in their area, they have a free, 7 day, "test drive" now, where they will let you use a iPhone for 7 days for free on their network, and you can see if their network meets your approval...

My family lives west of SA off HWY 90 in Castroville.

T-Mobiles network runs circles around Sprints! I was with sprint for the last 7 or 8 years and was tired of the "We are working on the towers in your area" excuse. I switched to T-Mobile back in February and got the Z1s and I plan on getting the M8 this week with the jump program. I had the M7 with sprint which was a great phone despite sprint's crappy network. I can't wait to be back with a htc phone!

I did, and have had a lg flex,(actually 3 of them), and I too can't wait to be back on a HTC phone, for a variety of reasons..

the "new" jump, for those that signed up after Feb 23rd, requires you to pay 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your "old" phone, before you can "jump" to a new one. You can do that as often as you want, but it will cost you 1/2 of the outstanding balance on your phone.
the "old" jump, that you and I are on, doesn't have that requirement; we can jump once after 6 months at no charge, and then jump a second time anytime within our first year at no extra charge as well..
I'm getting an M8 next week for my first jump, and then I will wait and see what comes out in the next few months and see; note 4, Sony Z3, htc one max M8, who knows what is coming between now and December..
