If you are going to flash a custom ROM, no need to update the stock ROM to 4.0.4 just to overwrite it with a custom ROM...
If you want to stay stock and update to 4.0.4, see this.

You could either download the update and install it using clockworkmod recovery or put the entire zip file in the /cache folder, choose look for updates and it will be found since you already downloaded it.

[Q] Lack of OTA 4.0.2 update means I'm stuck with buggy volume issues

I haven't had the 4.0.2 update pushed yet, I got the phone today and I have the common volume bug, but I have no way to fix it since they don't seem to be pushing the 4.0.2 OTA update anymore...
Should I root or just wait for the next update? I'm at a loss what to do, this volume bug is ****ed up...
Otherwise this phone completely kicks ass!

True and not true at the same time.
The bug exists in 4.0.1 ITL41D
The bug is fixed in 4.0.1 ITL41F
Without the update to F you can be on 4.0.1 all you like and still have the bug.
ITL41F update aint coming through to people still stuck on ITL41D :/
I decided to give up and flash a Custom ROM, fixed all my issues.
why flash a custom rom when you could have flashed the official recovery from google here ? :/

Because I love the freedom of being root and being able to do as I please. A lot of the custom ROMs do wonders for battery life too and fix the auto brightness.
Why not? I know what I'm doing and it's ridiculously easy cuz of the unlocked bootloader. No harder than plugging it in and executing "fastboot oem unlock"!
so...first you complain about the lack of OTA and then decide to just install a custom rom anyway because you see it as better? why the hell didnt you just do that in the first place instead of creating another thread to ***** about it

How do you flash this? I am on 41D and want the latest. I am use to the SGS1 and a flashed everything through Odin or Clockwork, everything seems a lot more complicated for the Nexus

I've already answered this FYI.

will upgrading to 4.0.4 break root?

just got the notification today, I'm on AOKP m4. I always thought that if you're on a custom rom you don't get the OTA updates and I'm hesitant. Does anyone know?
you don't get OTA... it must be a bug, don't accept it it will cause problems if you accept.
If you've got CWM doesn't matter it won't install anyway

Its not a bug... his footprint matches that of the phones getting the 4.0.4 update. His ROM just didn't put in anything to block it like it should.

Yes. But what I'm saying is its not just CWM breaking his ability to accept the OTA. He's 100% non-stock.

[Q] Need help restoring non-boooting Nexus

Can someone link to a guide dealing with restoring a Nexus? It's stuck at the Google logo. I can get into bootloader mode with power+volume down, but it's not reacting when trying to navigate with the volume buttons after that.
I got a little bit tired of waiting for official firmware on my Galaxy S2 (even if CM was fun) so I got a Nexus yesterday - great price these days. It was the 4.0.1 yakju version as I'm in Western Europe.Unlocked and rooted with Root Toolkit v1.4 after which I wanted to install 4.0.4 using this guide. Got as far as flashing system.img and then the above happened.
All I want is to get back to working stock so that I can flash 4.1. Have no data on the device so a factory reset is no problem.
Much appreciated.

Just fastboot flash Nexus Factory Images if you have no problem with wiping your data. That's odd that your bootloader won't respond to volume buttons... I might say try reflashing the bootloader and recovery, but since your bootloader is acting up right now, I'd go to flashing the factory images first, and if that doesn't work, try reflashing just bootloader and a custom recovery.

Have a look at posts 1 and 2 in the "flash" link in my sig.
BTW, volume down and power is not the bootloader. You need to press volume up and volume down and power.

Perfect, that guide worked. Installed 4.0.4 and then 4.1. The root guide does not work on 4.1 however, but I'll find another one. Many thanks.
Do you know if the current 4.1 image is gold by the way?

ok, technically it not, since JB isnt out yet. im using his original version 1, so its close to where stock would/should be. but, that is just a guess on my part since, again, there is no official stock jellybean. theres only the google i/o preview version

That's not really what I was trying to say: it is stock, but it's deodexed, which makes it not stock, and it won't be able to apply any future OTA updates.

Flashed with CWM-SuperSU-v0.92-mod which worked like a charm. I now have both Superuser and SuperSU installed, with the latter taking precedence, but I guess that doesn't matter.

[Q] Will updating to JB - when it's out - unroot/brick my phone?

Hi Everyone!
So my question today is pretty simple, when JB is out for my SGH-I747m, and I update it OTA, will it remove the root I have installed (superuser), and or brick my phone because I have CWM recovery and BusyBox installed?
Thanks!
Michael
Most likely it wont install if you are not completely stock

It will not update unless you remove root(OTA Rootkeeper) and if you froze or removed the bloatware it may not work as well. It sounds like with the update that just came through this week it has to be pretty close to stock, with stock recovery to work OTA. Im sure there will be ways to flash it once these guys get ahold of the official files with CWM or Odin.

I got the app and it seems very interesting! Can't wait for an update to test it out!
Hopefully JB will come quick through the Carrier in October to our devices!!!

Im rooted and want to unroot and go to stock.

Ok i have a question, if im rooted and lets say an update comes out for jellybean. Am i able to just uprade firmware or do i have to unroot and go to stock first?
Or just wait for someone to make a cwm flashable zip that's already rooted.

hey OP have you seen the answers given to you by fellow members? If not when you do be so kind as to thank them for taking time out to help... not saying you were not going to but....
If you want to try a JB rom try AOKP 9/13 or 9/18 both running pretty damn good most
Enjoy!

I have to agree with Playya. I'm running AOKP Build 3 and have no issues at all. It's a great JB ROM.
If you flash that, you may need to set your governor to "Interactive" and Scheduler to "Deadline." I did to avoid some constant crashes.
