I'm thinking about getting the xperia play and I read that the screen was scratch resistant.
is it on par with gorilla glass?
Sent from Droid Incredible
the scratch resistance? absolutely terrible.
I haven't a scratch on mine.
I was in London recently and now got a tiny scratch on mine. So scratch resistant? No, not really...
The screen is not Scratch resistant.
It comes with a factory fitted scratch resistant shatter proof screen protector.
what have you been doin to your phones anyway people that you get scratches on it? mine's 6 months old and doesn't have one...

I thought your phone is just 4 months old..
TS, I think Androhero already answered your question..
@brocha
oh yeah just a typo, that should be 4 months, since it's september (09) minus may (05) when i bought it, so it should be 4 months, hehehe

I would say no since once the protector is removed its just glass. I took my factory installed protector off around 2-3 months ago and i have no scratches. I keep my phone in the same pocket everytime with nothing else in there to avoid scratching the screen. If your worried leave the factory fitted screen protector on and it should be fine.
Not much to say really. I have removed the factory fitted screen protector (around 2 months ago) and even though i have my phone with no case and in whichever pocked I can reach, no scratches. It does seem that it becomes even more of a finger print magnet (if that is even possible!). It may not be officially scratch resistant, but it does take some doing, even with the abuse I give it.
Took off factory screen protector about 2months ago when I got the phone. No scratches so far. I do put in my pocket with nothing else just to be sure, but then I have done this with any of my touch screen phones.
I got a scratch, and I haven't touched the factory installed protector. I couldn't care less, but the scratch resistance is not on par with GG.
Thanks for all the responses. I am currently using the Droid Incredible and I really love not having a screen protector on it and I can't believe how scratch resistant it is.
I know that the Xperia Play doesn't use Gorilla Glass but on their specs it mentions scratch resistant screen. I just didn't know how resistant it really is.
But i'm still going to get it in a month because I really want the game pad feature of it.

The factory film scratches when it touches clothing or screen wipe cloths. Apply a true screen protector over it IMMEDIATELY if you intend to keep it (it isn't really supposed to be removed).
I got a few scratches on the protective cover so I took it off and haven't had any scratches on the phone since.

What are your clothes and screen wipes made of? I carry my phone in my jeans pocket and wipe the screen on my teeshirt and in 2 months there isn't a mark on it. Never have screen protectors on phones and never get any scratches. They're only made for the criminally abusive or the paranoid.

I think you just aren't quite as observant and can't notice them on your "perfect" screen. I swapped out a problematic phone for a new one and wiped it with a screen wipe before installing a protector and even that left small permanent scratches. There is no way to avoid it with that film.
My alignment is off on my realook screen protector so is it wise to take off and reapply?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I wouldn't...
I've had issues with screen protectors in the past when I reapplied them. They would always not stick on properly or just look bad in general after the realignment. If the issue is not so big, do not reapply
We have an ivisishield on the wife's shift and i reapplied it no problem there was a few air pockets but they worked themselves out after a couple days. Didn't even use the spray that came with it.

It's not a big issue, but it's still kinda bothering me. I have another screen protector but it would be a waste to use it. Realook are high quality screen protectors so I dont think stickyness will be an issue, but dust might get in when i take it off..
EDIT: take a chance if you had it for a good price. Else, just leave it that way and wait until it starts to peel off
I agree wit koperniczx3
But I think it wont stick nicely, and the air bubbles would probably easily go underneath.

I decided to just save my extra screen protector and stick with my messed up one. Not a huge deal so it would be a waste to use a new one. Thanks for all the input.

I re-apply screen protectors all the time. I take them off the device and rinse the tacky side gently with running tap water and sometimes a little bit of hand soap. Then I lightly shake excess water off of the screen protector and re-apply with a plastic card covered with a lens rag. Any beading water between the screen and screen protector will squeeze out with some squeegee action from the card/rag combo, and just pat dry around the edges. There should be no dust and no bubbles this way. I've never had water damage or anything, it's just a tiny bit of water. Of course you should do all this with the device powered off just in case.
I wouldn't. Once you take them off and put them back on, they won't stick right. Unless you wanna be attacked by air bubbles in the protector, I'd say just leave it be.
nope. not gonna be the same
By "reapply" you mean using the old protector? if so don't do it....
if the alignment is off that means your protector is too small, that usually happens with low quality ones. High-end ones will fits exactly.

Generally I have had bad luck applying screen protectors after the first time. I put one on a phone not long ago, and it came out crooked. Wasted the protector in the end...
OK, I NEED to ask you this question: why on earth would anyone use a screen protector on a Gorilla Glass? Before Optimus 4X, I had Samsung Wave for two years - also protected with Gorilla Glass, and I never used any protection but a simple back cover. And guess what? Not a single scratch! I have a maltese dog, he ran across 4X HD numerous times, he even once stumbled upon it on the bed and the phone fell on the floor - guess what - no scratches :highfive:
So I would recommend you all - just buy a cover, or maybe a flip case, and it will be enough
And do not be offended by this post, plese
Gorilla glass is nice but not perfect. My first gorilla glass phone was scratched on the second day of use. It wasn't in the same pocket as my keys and coin either. My gorilla glass tablet had zillions of micro scratches too, looked so cloudy in comparison to a screen-protected device. When my screen protector is getting cloudy I can just apply a new one...can't do that with naked gorilla glass.
I don't use those protectors anymore becuase the material is very often very cheap. All my protectors got soo many scratches so i "put it away" and now I don't get any scratches on my display.

Depends on the Screen Protector. Some are ok to re-apply, so are not. At minimum try to smooth out the air bubbles.
Hi all,
I was thinking of removing my factory built in shatter proof screen protector that every one has because mine has a fair amount of scratches on it.. I was just asking for your opinion if i should do it?
For people who have removed it:
-Is there many scratches on your phone
-was it worth it
-does it overall feel, feel better
-would i have to buy a screen protector to avoid grease all over it. (i read somewhere that oil and grease builds up fast)
Im thinking of doing it, but i would like peoples opinion on it
Im also using a xperia s
The Touch response will improve after you remove it. But if u want to avoid further scratches after the removal then attach another screen protector.
Go ahead if you want to remove it. But let me share something with you.
The pre-installed protector on one of my phone got scratched and i applied another screen guard over it. I wasn't able to notice any scratches thereafter. ( Obviously until the upper one got scratched )
But my pre-installed protector wasn't intensely scratched
On the other hand, I've removed the pre-installed protector on my Arc S ( it's been several months now ) and not even a single scratch exists on it's screen. The screen is scratch resistant.
What auni said is absolutely wise, install a new screen guard when you remove the old one . That would just add to the safety
you can remove the built in screen protector if you wan't .
I did it on mine also, it had alot of scratches on it .
I bought a new one for a few euro's and it's like new
Thanks guys, ill do it as soon as i get a screen protector

I have removed mine, which was badly scratched. It was ugly even when new: I don't understand why Sony needed to put garbage plastic on top of scratch proof glass, which is probably as good as Gorilla glass. The touch has since significantly improved. So has the look: brighter and clearer. I used scalpel just to lift the edge on top right corner of the screen and then peeled the plastic off. In my opinion, you don't need any screen protector at all: I have been using the phone for 2 months -- not a scratch...
I removed it then used windex to clean the screen because of the grease build up, and wow windex works good for preventing build up of grease

I removed my shatter-shyte protector after a few days. It's really a useless "accesorry". But the screen itself, even after cleaning, gets oily/greasy very quickly and it's a pain to clean it, just gets smodged all over, so I recommend everyone to install a quality screen protector.
I use teh Spigen Ultra Thin Crystal protector and the touch responsivness is superb and makes for a easier cleaning when it gets oily. Just wipe it with your shirt and it's done(something which didn't work with no screen protector). The Spigen is a little expensive but I've been using it for 6 months and not a scratch on it, so IMO it's worth the investment.

I got my shiny new ZL C6506 on Friday morning and by Friday afternoon I already had a few pretty good scratches on the screen. This only got worse over the weekend. I assumed it was gorilla glass but sure enough I look on gsmarena.com at the specs and its scratch-resistant and shatter-proof glass. I guess I will have to start checking this before I buy phones from now on. I just assumed a $600 phone would have better glass. Otherwise, I love the phone. This is the first factory unlocked phone I have been able to find that has AT&T LTE bands.

I did think about it but I've had a Note 2 for months and it barely has a scratch on it. I haven't had a phone scratch this easily since my Galaxy Nexus, its probably a similar glass.
Why don't you remove the preinstalled "screen protector" if you got scratches on it?
Sent from my C6503 using xda premium
OP, are you sure the glass itself has scratched or does it have a preinstalled SP on it?
Regardless of which glass it is, it will scratch. I have had plenty of phones with GG2 and though not immediately visible, under a strong light, you can see plenty of micro scratches when looked at from a particular angle. I hate putting on SPs myself, but as of now, theres no phone with a glass that wont scratch.
They should learn to reach things before they post. What they have scratched is the screen protector on the screen that it came withpreinstalled. I'm using nothing but the preinstalled protector but I haven't scratched it yet.

I second this. The 6506 comes with a pre-installed screen protector (look closely & you'll see it) -- your scratches are probably in that, rather than on the actual glass. I've had my 6506 for nearly 2 weeks now and I have no scratches on it anywhere.
The only thing that it seems the 6502/3 (?) comes with that the 6506 does not is an extra screen protector in the box. It just has the one pre-installed. If you look near the edges of the glass, you'll probably notice that you can see the edge of the screen protector. I've been tempted to remove it and replace it with something a bit nicer, but I haven't thus far, and haven't had any real problems.

What is affecting the viewing angles is the screen itself. No SP makes the screen look washed out from an angle, the privacy ones just dim it out

I think he meant to say that the 6503/6502 comes with an additional SP. But from your comment it seems like the 6503 does not. Mine came with one. I have a 6502 though :cyclops:
I want to remove my SP (I have an Xperia arc though). Can I use the SP as a stylus pen, because there are many tutorials on how to make a stylus pen from a screen protector
I think you'll find Sony had used dragontail glass on the ZL. If so it won't scratch easy. Sure the screen protector will though strange move from Sony even if it's shatter proof protection.

wrong the good privacy display protection changes the viewing angle a lot!! And thats ment to be!

the factory installed sheet is not a regular screen protector but a "Shatter Proof Sheet" which can be easily scratched. some users report that in XZ, the SONY logo is printed on this sheet.

I think you misunderstood, or I couldnt explain well. Privacy SP dont wash out your display when looked at from an angle. You cannot see anything because they dim it out completely. Not make it appear all white.
If you remove the shatter proof screen protector you need an oleophobic coating on it or it will be filled with fingerprint in no time. A simple method to do so is using rain repellant on car windshield, something like RainX will do just fine
The anti-shatter film on my ZL didn't last a day without scratching. The fabric of my back pocket (denim) is too stressful for it. So, is Sony going to void my warranty if I remove it and replace it with a the Skinomi I ordered on day 1?
Note: the screen on my gen 1 Galaxy S took the same treatment for 3 years without a scratch.
Can I buy another anti-shatter film from Sony?
I have got my C6502 with not installed protector and spended about 3 hours to install is myself.
I have almost damaged the protector.
Talked to Sony
Called Xperia support. and Sony Store. It took 4 calls total because they kept passing the buck to each other.
I had to get at least one rep to Google the coating before they even believed that it existed.
And, of course, from there, they assume removing it voids the warranty...
...not because they've been told by Sony ... but because they think so.
They all seem to agree, however, that carrying a phone in your back pocket for a few days without it scratching is a reasonable expectation.
I'd love to know the engineering rationale behind this stupid coating.
I CAN'T be "keeping manufacturing cost down" with a $760 retail price.
For that, it should have Gorilla or Dragontail glass.
If it does have it, then it should be fine to remove the film.
You'd think Sony would have trained their staff on this. It HAS to have come up by now.
I got 2 Xperia ZLs, C6502 black and white few days ago for me and my wife. One bought through Newegg and the other from Amazon. Neither came with extra screen protector.

Yea i bought the Z front + back like a fool, i would have sworn i was looking at the right one, but i cut the warranty seal as soon as i got it xD.
I ordered the one for the Z1 and im about to put it on, looks awesome. i still want one for the back though, the glass just feels much better then urethane, although the urethane has a more rugged feel for the back, as it flexes and does not shatter.

They are nicer for the grip but don't look nearly as good. But they don't add thickness. I just got my glass protector for the back and want to see if it will fit in my dock with the glass-m on the front and this generic one on the back.
After removing sony's screen protector, how do I clean the glass and remove any glue left?
Is it safe to remove it and keep the glass exposed while I wait for the new protector?
I would wait till you get it. My glass m took about 2 weeks (or felt like it) to come. I read some one washed it with soapy water. But I left it on. Glass m comes with a wipe cloth and pre sticker for dust. I done mine in bathroom when it was steamy

Yep and you might want to dip your fingers in a liquid soap and water so you can touch the back without leaving fingerprints. Also if you get soap water between the phone and protector it will let you position the glass before you press it down.
I like how i don't need to turn off the phone at any point lolz.

I've used Spigen a couple times on my GS4 with no application issues. Why a couple times? Dropping from 6ft up or more on to cleverly placed rocks and corners of raised floor plates hitting the glass just right after several months of great protection. You literally clean the phone off, make sure there's no dust and slap it on.
Little bit off topic, but i wondered if these glass screen protectors designed for the z1 would fit on the z1s from t-mobile? z1s supposedly a little longer but i am not sure if it's the bezel or sides

Doubtful. The placement of the FFC and proximity/light sensors are swapped between models so the hole for the sensors are on the opposite side that they need to be on for the Z1s.
