I live in a area that poor 3g coverage (although I work where we have great 4g/3g). I am really struggling getting a usable 3g signal at my house. This is for both phone calls and internet. My wifes verizon iphone has 2-3 bars and works fine. Does anyone know which 3g radio is strongest for 3g signal? I am getting close to having to let my nexus go because of this issue so hopefully someone can give me a tip on the best 3g radio. Thanks

Reception is weak in my office at work. On my previous phone, Motorola Defy, I noticed my data would go back and forth between 'H' and '3G'.
With my GS2, data is stuck on 4G. I have watched it for hours now and even though I have no bars it does not change. Am I missing something? Is my device defective?
I appreciate your help with this.

There might not be a 3G (icon) for the phone which is why it stays on 4G rather than drop to 3G.
At least that is the case with my G2X, it is either 4G or 2G but never 3G.
Not sure why, but that's how they made it.
Have you done a speed test to see if you are on 4G or not?
This phone also might have better connectivity to the network.
....
I can at least confirm there is an E for edge Found out today at my apartment in Boston (normally I have 4G with great speeds in Boston, but I guess the bathroom doesn't get good reception)
Thanks for the replies. Yes I ran 4 speed tests this morning in 4G and my max was 1490 Mbps so I think it's working well.

There actually is a 3g icon. It is only displayed for Umts networks. The reason it was done that way is because there is no way to differentiate hspa from hspa+. Two network technologies for 3g were in use anyways and so it was easier to display all hspa and hspa+ networks as 4g and all umts as 3g.

Edit due to phone auto correct fail.
Curious if its worth saving battery life to just keep the network on CDMA only during the day ?
I came from Sprint and they had the 4G toggle on most Android devices, I never used it, maybe 05% of the time, WiMax was such a battery hog, and so spotty to ever a hold a solid connection anyways, just seemed like a waste. But Sprints 3G really sucked too, like 1xEdge speeds.
Does keeping the Nexus on LTE cause signal issues ? Meaning does it jump back and forth between 3G and 4G causing dropped calls if you on the phone and move into a non LTE area ?
Thanks

I only bother to switch mine off when I am on my days off from work. I get great 4g signal at work but none at home. I haven't payed close enough attention to battery usage to notice a difference though.
As far as battery life goes, I've found there isn't much difference at all if LTE is on/off. It's the screen that kills the battery. That being the case I don't bother switching it off anymore.
I leave LTE on all day and my battery lasts all day. As long as that's the case I don't pay any attention to battery life. I also never leave 4G coverage though.
I am new to Verizon. Live in the Chicago area, I would assume a big market like this has solid LTE coverage ?
I just know from Sprint, keeping the phone on 4G was a fast battery kill. If left on WiMax you were lucky to get 4 hours on a full charge.
Hopefully LTE is better than WiMax on the battery, I know for sure it way better network coverage.

Yeah better coverage and probably easier to find a signal due to frequency differences.
I use ihtfp69's LTE toggle to turn off LTE/CDMA to just CDMA when I leave work. I live in a pretty poor 3g signal area, so leaving LTE on just drains my battery unnecessarily. I turn it on when I get into the LTE area, works great since it's a widget.

Usually the issue, IMO, is if you are moving between an LTE area and a non-LTE area or if you're at the edge of LTE coverage, so your phone loses its LTE connection, searches, reconnects, etc.
If you've got a solid LTE connection and it's uninterrupted you won't drain battery as fast.
As to whether LTE usage drains your battery faster than 3G usage... I can't say.
I usually leave my lte on unless I know I have to push my battery... coming from sprint evo then photon which are complete battery hogs on 4g due to the joke they call 4g coverage...

The key issue is whether you have a weak or non-existent LTE signal. I find that in some areas such as these if the phone is on LTE I do not get 3G service, or the service goes on and off. If I switch to CDMA only 3G will work much better. I've only used the phone for limited times in areas with strong 4G so I couldn't compare batter life when set for 4G.
I toggle lte off when home, no 4g signal does drain my battery. At work with great 4g signal I toggle it back on. Gives me an excuse to look at the beautiful battery draining screen.

How is the reception on 3G/4G compared to other AT&T Phones? People on the Verizon forum are complaining about poor reception.
I believe my sgs2 skyrocket had better reception... Need to test a bit more though.

I get as good of a signal, if not better then my galaxy note. Only HSDPA+ though as at&t is the only NON lte or equivalent carrier here in Hell Paso Tx

My signal is ok but it always shows as yellow in battery screen. Very rarely ts green as One X was.
Reception has been great for me so far. I don't notice it being any different than my Atrix, which had fantastic reception.

Good to hear that the reception seems to be as good as the Atrix. IMO, Motorolas have the best Antennae. Must be some something specific to the radios for the Verizon network that causes the S3 to be seemingly having reception problem. Galaxy Nexus on Verizon was definitely subpar when it came to radio reception whereas the International GSM Nexus version seemed fine.

It could be down to the phone, but I say its AT&T. I live in London, but when I was in Los Angeles a few weeks back, the house I was staying in Culvery City would get no coverage or it would come and go and would be on one bar of voice and not data before or sometimes edge, my aunt who lives in LA who I was staying with has an iPhone and she had the same problem. It wasn't until you went up the street I would get 2 - 3 bars of HSPA+ coverage. I think AT&T coverage nationwide is spotty, here in the UK its different we have 98% coverage, I have 4-5 bars of HSPA+ whereever I go. We don't have the big LTE 4G coverage here in the UK though on any of the networks. Couldnt of used T-Mobile as the frequencies they use for 3G aren't supported my International aka UK Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300, would only get voice and no data/edge data. Having AT&T go phone HSPA+ coverage was great and made my Holiday a lot easier and more enjoyable, however I have to say in Vegas the coverage was a lot better.
Anyone else notice your signal is less when wifi is on instead of data? When im on 4g i get 3-4 bars but on wifi with wifi calling turned off i get maybe 2 bars.

When you goto settings>about phone>status, what does your signal strength read? With and without wifi. Mine doesn't change.
-94/95 dbm with wifi.
-89/91 on data.
I do know their upgrading towers by me for lte but still its weird.

I am so jealous! Your numbers look good, btw. Prolly them just messing with stuff. Let us know how the upgraded towers turn out!
Yeah i just left verizon for tmobile. I get much better service and cheaper too.
I am having the same problem
I am having the same problem I just got it today I been using T-mobile for a long time I was using a very old phone and I was getting way better Signal. Befor Tmobile Galaxy Note 2 I was using a ATT Galaxy Note 1 had no problem with the Signal.
My g2x had 1-2 bars where my note has no signal. This phone definitely has weaker reception which is surprising because of the size.

My signal is better latley. As i said i know their upgrading towers by me. Been a great day as i found out verizon didnt charge me any eft's when i ported over to tmobile. im shocked but happy.
Hey guys does the note 2 get better reception in fringe areas than the s3. Getting sick of my s3 dropping calls
Thanks

Pretty good receptionwise and AFAIK it is marginally better. Not sure though. Never had any call drops even in areas with poor reception till now.
My coworker has an S3, and the building we work in has a tin roof that we figure must block reception. My old phone had trouble, his S3 won't get any internet connection at all, and hardly gets service. I'm on 3G all day, with a couple bars. The internet is painfully slow, but it connects. We're both on the same carrier. US Cellular.
