[Q] Unlock Bootloader with Broken Power Button? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is there a way to unlock or root from 4.0.4 without a working power button?
Long story short:
My power button is broken and I have a crack in my screen so Samsung will not honor my warranty (even though the two have nothing to do with each other).
I had my Nexus unlocked and rooted but brought it back to stock and relocked so i could bring it back to Verizon where I found out that the crack would void the warranty anyway.
I've been looking for 3 days and haven't found anything (though did find a couple tips on how to reboot the phone if it isn't recognized by adb). I have also looked to unroot without unlocking but am at 4.0.4 and have only seen that possible on 4.0.2.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

open up the phone and manually power the phone on?

I'm not sure what you are saying. I can power up the phone but once powered on I cannot wake it without a working power button. It only wakes if I plug it in or receive a phone call.

Unfortunately if your power button doesn't work and you don't have root, you cannot unlock. And you can't root 4.0.4 without unlocking

Thanks for the reply,
Just the answer I didn't want to hear.
Am I SOL or is this something you think the geniuses on these boards will figure out in the upcoming days/weeks? From what I've read it looks like they "fixed" whatever allowed you to gain root in 4.0.2 so I'm probably screwed.
If I cannot unlock or unroot, is there a way for me to make the volume buttons wake the phone?
Or is it possible to revert back to 4.0.2?

there is a free APP in the google play called "Fix Broken Power Button" that allows you to wake your phone with your volume keys. I use this app in my N1 that have the same issue with the power button to wake the phone in android 2.3.6.
it works fine but you have to reconfigure it each time you reboot your phone in order to work
BTW some one mentioned in this thread that found a way to make the phone to boot even if the ADB didn't recognized it. I like to know how to do this.
finally i have the same issue. My N1 is on 2.3.6 no root and the bootloader locked and I searched with no luck on how to unlock the boot loader or root it.
The PASSING method not worked for me because the bootloader say that the main version of the update is older and do no let me downgrade to froyo
alternatively I used the windows tool to root gingerbread the .bat script that runs some exploit in the android but didnt worked for me. so I think im scrued but if some one knows something i like to know
that's all jejeje and forgive me for my bad English
my goal is to install Cyanogen Mod 7 in order to use the trackball of the nexus one to wake the phone ans to use an app that requires root access to reboot the phone without the power button

I just come back to update the previous post.
I manage to get my nexus one unlocked and rooted.
even if you have 2.3.6 stock, and a broken power button it is possible to make this
After searched the net for day i found that if you install the blackrose bootloader it will unlock the phone. then with blackrose you will no receive the "main version is old" message that you get when you try to downgrade to froyo using the PASSING method. so if you successfully downgrade to froyo, it is very easy to root with the super one click application witch for me din't make it on 2.3.6.
once you root your phone you can either go back to 2.3.6 via OTA or PASSING method or install a ROM like CM7 and take full control of your phone with no power button
and that's it. hope someone use this information

You should probably take your issues over to the N1 forum instead of the GN forums here...this is all completely irrelevant information except for the broken power button app, assuming it works on ICS.

You actually don't need fastboot or volume buttons to unlock the bootloader this way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41612401#post41612401. HTH!

Running into an issue regarding recovery.

I like to think I am rather educated in regards to how to root and all that. I just got my replacement Evo today and of course it is updated to 2.3.3. So I can't use unrevoked, but I was hoping to flash over to a older backup I made on 2.2 on my old phone.
Except, when I do the whole hold the volume down + power button and eventually choose recover, all that happens is a image of a phone and a exclamation point appears and it never leaves here.
I know in order for me to be able to use ClockwordMod I need to root the phone, which can't happen on 2.3
So what are my options? How do I flash over my old rom???? Even if it doesnt let me get back to 2.2 its still better than redownloading all my apps.

so there is no way possible for me to recover without rooting?
I still have to do update the drivers on the phone (device manager, installing the unrevoked drivers...unless i need to be rooted for this as well)
so even then I still cant use the recovery option? whats the point of it? HTC doesnt want you rooting, hence 2.3 being stock on Evos, but yet they include the recovery option on their phones which you seemingly cant use...unless...you...root? im confused. Unconfuse me please

Rooting doesnt exactly let you use recovery.
The stock recovery from HTC is basically nothing.
When you do full root. It gives you the ability to install unsigned apps. That is what s-off means (security off). So the bootloader doesnt check to see what your installing is signed by HTC.
So therefore.
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery.
Now some automated root apps (unrevoked) do the whole process for you.
If you root by adb. You would be rooting and installing a custom recovery seperately, if you actually knew what the adb codes were and not just following a tutorial.
You can root and still have no recovery. Root doesnt mean custom recovery. They are two seperate things.
So even though the recovery option is there it is unuseable. Until you root. Then you can get a custom recovery...hope this helps

At this time no. I think its more of a way to get you to buy the next thing from them. If devs keep making the phone feel fresh and new, how long would you wait to upgrade(just my take on it). I believe recovery is there for their developers and carriers developers(to add their bloat) again just my take. Give the devs here sometime and i'm sure they'll find a way to get root back.

i truly hope so. ive been spoiled by CM7. I like to run juicedefender ultimate on CM7 during my work days where im not around a plug and ill be at over 85% on a 15 hour day. on stock HTC 2.3 with the same juicedefender settings running on the same 15 hour day, im down to 50% or lower sometimes. i can live without root for now. the biggest negative is I just cancelled the Sprint hotspot because of CM7.
can you even run the hotspot on stock sense if you aren't paying for it like you could on a root?

[Q] easiest way to unroot G2 to return

I own a T-mobile G2 and it has recently had a problem with the touch screen. I would not like to return it and get a new one because I am still under the warranty but i must unroot it first. I have tried to follow a few other posts about how to do this but none of them have worked. Now because of that i am still in cyanogen mod 7 but i have S-on. Could anyone lead me in the right direction
If you would, please post your hboot info so we can see where you are at and advise accordingly.

Got your back buddy. I just did this today WITH A BLACK SCREEN. I couldn't see anything going on, but it's THAT easy.
theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision
You only need to do Step III. Ignore the hex editing part because if you do step II, you'll notice that Cyanogenmod has edited it already so you can easily just drop the zip file onto your sdcard and run it from your Pwr + Volume Down menu. Very very simple if you're running CM7.
Ask if you have any questions, but it really shouldn't matter...it was a joke (after I spent nearly three days researching how to install ADB for a G2 -- It's very, very complicated and unnecessary)

nik.the could you please tell me the button combination I need to press once I put the stock rom on the SD root and turned the phone on (I know i got to hold vol down and power but that's it :S)
On another not it was such a painful process to root this Desire Z and with my past 3 HTC's needing repair I think I'll look at another brand after the life of this repaired phone ends.. this forum and dev support is the best thing HTC has going for it at the moment.
I went through that process (had to go through step II as well even though I was on CM), but it failed:
Upgrade process completed - stock rom got installed, bootscreen changed, etc, but i still have S-Off.
I really need to send the phone off for repairs today, any advice would be greatly appreciated...
(also not sure if i used gfree or visionary, but inclined to say i used this guide (says it uses visionary/gfree):

I also still have S-off. I would also like an answer to this problem because I'll have to send this back within the week. I think I used Visionary first to perm root it then I used Gfree to unlock everything else.
From what i've read, T-Mobile doesn't seem to care that you have S-off, either that or they don't check. Many people have mentioned that they sent back unrooted phones still showing S-off and did not get charged for returning a rooted device.
I hope that's true. It gets a little tiring doing things like this and they never work out like I think they will. This phone is unrooted as far as I'm concerned. I can't do anything on it but I don't know if that is because it is basically unrooted or if it is because my power button is effed. When I'm in the bootloader can I not scroll down to recovery when the phone is unrooted?

i returned my wifes g2 to tmo last month. it was rooted, and the speaker quit working. just factory wiped and returned it. no big deal.
Well that's good news. I feel a little better but I'll still be stressing about that for a few weeks. lol
ok so for any1 on here need to get s-off back to s-on here is the stock part7back up
well sry can upload a .bin so if anyone know a way for me to getr it to you plz let me kniow
I think i still have the partition 7 backup. Do I just use gfree to get that back in there?

Download the stock pc10img.zip and do it that way the use visionary to temp then use the part7back up to get s-on back and BAM back to stock s-on
And next time, it may behoove you to search. It would save you some time and avoid waiting for answers.
All of these ppl have asked this same question. I am sure you can find an answer if you have no already.

You can use gfree to s-off. There are detailed instructions in the wiki. Will need to be done on froyo so you can use the temp shell root.

[Q] Fastboot OEM unluck and backups

Hi there, I want to root my GN, i have it all ready to go and all drivers working fine. However I need to fastboot unlock it. I know that wipes everything on the phone but I really cant be arsed going through all the setup again. Is there some way I can back everything up (temporary root or something like that so that I can Titanium backup?) like apps and home screen config
Any ideas?

i am afraid not at the moment.
the only solution i head of was first introduced in nexus one where it stated if we oem unlocked it, it will void the warranty and not able to re-lock as well.
since then, the nexus S and G-Nexus are devices that may void warranty if unlock and can be easily re-lock.
hence no one bothers in finding a loop hole in the ICS4.0 to root the device without unlocking the bootloader (at lease for the moment, 1 weeks since release).
you need to "oem unlock" to root the device, else tough.

[Q] Root, is it worth it?

I am having a hard time to choose "to root or not root".
is there a easy way to root?
i just want ad-block and maybe wireless tether, still worth it?
i used to own a HTC DInc, flashing this roms and that roms, and ended up cm7 as my last rom, none of those are stable. beside roms and kernels, what's the advantage of rooting my GN?
Yep... I got rid of all the bloatware, was able to adjust the screen brightness for the automatic setting, and all the things you mentioned.
It is quite simple. To get you started...
1) Download Android SDK and drivers
2) Start phone in bootloader (hold volume +/- down while powering up)
3) Go to your C:/program files (x86)/Android/Platform-Tools folder within a command prompt
4) Type in Fastboot oem unlock
You're now unlocked... Now...
1) Download Superboot http://android.modaco.com/topic/348161-30-nov-r3-superboot-rooting-the-gsm-lte-galaxy-nexus/
2) Put phone back into bootloader as shown above
3) Run the BAT file
I don't know about others, but after waiting 20 minutes, I did a battery pull because it was stuck on the Google screen. I then had root after booting.

here is the thing about a "nexus" device. It is intended for developing. it is very easy to unlock and re-lock the bootloader. and just the same to root. if ever you want to return to a stock state the images are available from aosp.
why anyone wouldn't root/unlock on a nexus is beyond me.
so the answer to you question is it doesn't matter. because a couple quick command lines will fix everything
Yes
Unlock the Bootloader
Root your phone
Get the WIFI tether app.
Its worth it. That single feature alone made me figure out how to do it. Its really scary honestly, when the words "flashing" come into play, i think about the bad BIOS flash i did at work...but I then watched this video: ?v=ZtKoaPEXzHs[/url] and it didn't seem so bad. So I did it.
The other things you can do with a rooted phone aren't that interesting to mainstream ppl. I'll include myself in that bunch, but wifi app is the one shining perk you get when you root.
thanks everyone, I rooted . the reason i am scared because I brick my first HTC DInc when battery pull on radio flashing haha.

I also rooted my GNex because of my old app databases, saved games etc.
Titanium Backup is THE reason for me to have root!
Adfree is also nice, but to be able to restore every app you had is just a banger!
I have not rooted my phone yet and don't see the need right now but that may change in the future.
Pretty much rooted my previous phones out the box but that was more to get near a stock rom with no carrier bloatware and as there is no bloatware on the Nexus that requirement for me to root has been removed.
I hope there are more kernels for stock roms.

Curious.. are those the speeds you're getting on 4G? Here in Chicago, I am getting between 28-32mbps down
EDIT: I don't pay attention.. see that was a 3G speed
No one said it on the first page, so I will.

I don't understand your post - Kernels are independent of ROMs. The only limitation right now is that most are built for 4.0.3 and the 4.0.3 OTA hasn't been pushed yet. Or is that what you mean?
I would live to root but man I don't understand any of this stuff. Its not as easy as the d3 was for rooting. I dont know what and where those files would be located and what they are. Is there a super newb version. I need something that does a step by step. Like where are this files that you talk about are they on the phone.

in my opinion, if there isn't anything compelling you to root at the moment, i'd wait until that time. there will eventually come a rom, feature or app that will motivate you.
all the high horse talk about what a "nexus phone is about..." is irrelevant because you paid for a device to do and not do what you please with it.
Sertainly I love my custom rom.

1) Download Superboot http://android.modaco.com/topic/348161-30-nov-r3-superboot-rooting-the-gsm-lte-galaxy-nexus/
2) Put phone back into bootloader as shown above
3) Run the BAT file
I don't know about others, but after waiting 20 minutes, I did a battery pull because it was stuck on the Google screen. I then had root after booting.

Thanks! When you root, does this delete all your settings and apps? I spent so much time setting up this thing, what's holding me back from rooting is having to do it all again.

don't do ad block, on HTC phones it causes huge lag when surfing.

Really? It didnt lag much on my old htc Dinc.
Once i unlocked bootloader, it did a factory reset. All data got deleted, but some apps i installed still there after reset. And my setting got backed up by google.

here is the thing about a "nexus" device.

Because you wipe out all the data on your phone? How can I back up when non-rooted so it will be simple to restore everything when I root the phone?

[Q] Encryption and root

I ask forgiveness if this has been answered before, but the search function is currently down.
I'm receiving my GSM GN tomorrow, and I'd like to ask a couple of questions, in case anyone has done this with their phone:
I work in a corporate environment that wants encryption on their mobile devices due to the nature of our work (insurance). My ICS tablet, an ASUS TF101, has the ability to do full device encryption, and I'm assuming that the GN can as well. However, I'd like to root my phone as well. This means that I will need to remain stock (which I have no issues with) and also need to keep the stock recovery. I'm not overly interested in running custom ROMs.
Is it possible to root the phone without replacing the stock recovery via an exploit?
Is it more practical, or realistic, to instead:
Unlock bootloader
Install CWM or equivalent recovery
Root device via recovery
Reflash stock recovery
Encrypt device
With my tablet, I rooted it before I encrypted it. Since it did not have an unlocked bootloader or recovery, I had to use one of the exploits that was around at the time.
Anyone have any advice they might share?
With an unlocked bootloader, you can boot whatever kernel you want without flashing it. So, just boot cwm, flash the root files, and done. You have root + stock recovery. Then you can turn on encryption.

Ah, unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash anything you want via the stock recovery? That's quite useful, and I appreciate the response

No, you can flash whatever you want in recovery regardless if your bootloader is locked or not.
What an unlocked bootloader allows you to do is flash whole images to partitions and to boot any kernel you want, using fastboot. So, you can boot up cwm without flashing it: fastboot boot cwm.img

I'd post in your own thread, and not one about unlocking and encryption.
