I know when going from ics back to a gb rom, its always best to odin back to el26. Is this necessary with a nand backup? Have one of my current gb calkulins rom, but would like to try out ics possibly with an easy "out" back to calkulins gb.

ODIN back to EL26, better safe then sorry my friend.
I had a friend who just bricked his phone trying to take that shortcut. That showed me that if I ever have to go back, i will be doing the ODIN method.

the way i do it is make a nandroid, copy it to your computer, and if u dont like the rom, go back to stock gb and put the nandroid back on your phone. then run a restore

Installed CM9 and tried to go back, now I cant get anything to stick, cant install CM9 again just get errors in CW cant mount etc. Help please.
What did you do exactly please add more info
You might have to odin back to a stock package which I could do for you remotely if you don't have a stock data cable this will bring back to a fresh state then I could reroot you and this time you can flash it properly it was probably a bad download.

Your not supposed to restore nandroids of bml on an mtd clockworkmod
I'm guessing you where on era's legendary rom? That's bml partition cm9 is on mtd partition that's why this happened.
You'll need to repartition and odin stock ec05 or el30 if you need el30 it can be found by toadlife if you need stock ec05 that's in the android development stickies at the top named "bring an epic back from the brink"
*note I can do this all for you in a matter of minutes*

Please read up on MTD before venturing to either MIUI, CM7, CM9 or any MTD listed ROM. It will save you some headaches.

I'm already running CleanGB MTD 1.0.5......
Just waiting for an EL30 MTD version ROM that I like to come out, I'm hoping Toad will update CleanGB........After CM9 gets more wrinkles ironed out I may try that......I use my phone for work & cannot afford to gamble on an Alpha build....
I keep up with Toad's post for CleanGB MTD the rom & try help when I can.
I really like MTD, it just takes a slightly different process when flashing mods, but seems fast & stable.

Just remember not to mix and max BML nandroids and ROMs while on MTD. And remember some times you have to mount system before flashing some themes and mods.

Yeah, restoring data through an ICS Recovery is highly un-recommended. So Odin back to GB, flash a Custom Recovery then restore.
Can I go from ICS to ICS or do i have to go back to GB before going to another ICS rom?

You'd have to do the same thing. Restore both GB and ICS from GB.
Yeah. If you're on an ICS ROM. I wouldn't recommend flashing anything without Odining back to stock first. I also would never wipe data while on ICS. That is what caused mine to brick was wiping data while on an ICS ROM. I haven't done either since and so far I have had good luck and no problems. Plus, going back to pure stock first ensures you have a good flash and minimal issues.

I don't want to sound like I'm over-riding what these guys are saying, because I'm sure they are correct, but I have been going back and forth between sfhub's one click CL29 and calkulin's ICS FD02 ROM without any problems using my nandroids with CWM. But maybe I've been getting lucky, as I was doing it before reading what they posted above. But I've also not experienced any of the other issues everyone else has been having on the ICS ROM's.
To do a nandroid advanced restore of data from a gb rom to a ics rom? Currently on calks ics fd24 and i have a nandroid of blazer rom. Would doing an advanced restore of data be ok or do you think it might mess something up?

I'd use sfhubs autoroot EL26+StockCWM. Safest bet for sure.
Im not trying to go back to gb, i want to restore my data from a gb rom to the ics rom im on now.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Oh I wouldn't do that yet. But, you can try it an let us all know. For maximum safety I've just been using Odin to flash then going back to the stock EL26+CWM to then flash to ICS builds. And then I have to reinstall all my apps and do the configuration of everthing again - real pain in the anus. Main reason I haven't been flashing as much. I have kept coming back to my Blazer Rom. After messing with ICS I'll do the above (Oding stock EL26, add stock CWM - both from sfhub) then restore my last nandroid. It gets me back to completely working phone. I'm hoping to get some answers to using the 'preserve data' option to update/upgrade so I can save a crap load of time and effort.
Ill try and see what happens. Also, i thought the ics kernels were only giving problems for flashing roms? Whenever im on a ics rom and i want to go back to blazer, i just wipe and restore, no issues.

If I'm on an ICS ROM and back up on the new ACS recovery do I no longer have to go back to EL26 to flash a new ICS ROM?
What has and has not worked for people using the new ACS Recovery?

I think it's pretty safe, if you are upgrading your current rom or moving from one ICS TW-based rom to another. Ex: going from Calkulin FE22 to agat63 tFE22, probably should flash Calkulin's Format-all script, but flashing the rom should be fine. I would follow instructions in OP and not use it with AOSP/AOKP roms.

I personally have not dared to try backup or restore yet, but I have flashed quite a few tweaks and even 1 that wiped the cache... no brick so far.
I would stay away from factory reset wipe data/cache until it is confirmed fixed.

If you're going to flash a aosp rom I would definitely use el26 first just to be safe.
El26 all the way. Don't risk bricking your phone to save a minute doing it the guaranteed safe way.

First, Merry Christmas!
So here is my situation. I planned to give my sister my old Samsung Epic for Christmas. I put CM10 on it, threw in a new battery and watched her unwrap it. She was happy. Unfortunately, I discovered that you cannot activate a CM10 modded phone on Sprint, so I need to flash a stock ROM. I have never done this before, and it's been a while since I messed with Android and since she leaves the state in a few days, I need to do this quickly. I hope you can bear with my possibly silly questions so I can get this done ASAP!
1) I have seen the ROM listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12755712 recommended. I plan to use this. Any issues?
2) I understand this will revert the file system back to RFS. Will I be able to restore my CM10 nandroid, or will I need to re-run the CM10 flash from scratch in order to reformat?
3) Are any of my assumptions incorrect?
Normally I would research the hell out of this rather than ask for help, but under the circumstances, I am in a bit of bind time-wise.
Thanks!
1. EC05 too old. Get FC09 tar here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592994
2. Yes, you have to flash CM10 to convert to MTD in order to restore nandroids of the format. Don't forget to wipe /system if you ever wanna flash a CM10 package, or you'll have to pull the battery...
3. IDK, I'm in China and have no knowledge of carriers

Just flash a stock based mtd ROM like the peoples ROM mtd. Activate and then flash back or restore back to cyanogen. I've heard that some people have issues flashing back to another ROM from cm10 because of the partition resizing. But I've jumped back to cm9 which should have been an issue, but was not. Give it a try after a backup. Worst case you have to Odin back to stock like originally planned.

As suggested you can just flash a Touchwiz MTD ROM like The People's ROM. Activate then restore your CM10 nandroid or wipe data in CWM and flash back to CM10 after.

Or just stay on TPR and enjoy the succulent battery life
I've done the multi boot method where you boot off the sd card. It works great and is a lot faster than I thought it would be. You keep your cm10 system exactly as it is. You also can leave the OS files on your sd card and install the zip from recovery any time you need to update the prl or adjust radio settings.
