Just wondering, because I've been fracking with this tablet for a few days (since the great Staples sale) and so far have had zero luck getting the GPS to work without wifi. Anyone had any better success?

gps is ok. You don't need wifi to use it.

Hi
To use the device without wifi you need to install a navigation app, I use navfree with this app you can download (cache) maps and zip codes. Run the app with wifi on, check its function then disable the wifi, you should find the navigation will still be working. I always start the navigation app with wifi access as it needs to contact its server, once completed your free to go, sans wifi.
I use Fastergps.apk by Dominik Schurmaan with this app you can select your GPS region this worked for me when my GPS would not lock on to any satellites.
hope this helps
I also just got one of those Staples deals on the Archos 80 G9 ($125)
I was recommended to use a GPS app called "Sygic" (it in the Play Store) - there is a one time charge for Map for your region - but it works rather well - no need to a 3G connection or WiFi.

Yes, I installed Sygic in my G80 G9 4B ( bought in Staples ) and it works great but the maps is stored in internal storage so there is not much memory left ( the maps and database is about 2 GB ).
Is there any way to put the map in external Micro SD card?
Umm, I know that. I've tried Navfree. I've tried Sygic. I've tried trials of several others. NONE of them work. They didn't under Honeycomb and they don't under ICS.

I wouldn't have posted if there were useful information to be found from search . On the few posts that exist, I've tried their suggestions, and they do not work.
I'm also completely unable to use the internal GPS.
No matter how many hoops I jump through, how many incantations invoked or rituals performed, I cannot get a satellite lock at all, ever.
Here is the solution I've settled on and it works really well for me.
TBH I'd still rather use the internal GPS so I live in hope that one day Archos will fix this issue once-and-for-all.
No trouble here
I used the GPS with G Maps right out of the box. I had to pre-cache my maps over wifi but it satellite locked quickly with the app turning on and off with the screen as I went. This was before I flashed and it works just as well now.
Worked so well I took Maps off of my Xperia Play. You just have to set Maps to cache data over wifi and look at your route in detail ahead of time. Done and done.

Would it be possible for some of you guys to install a couple of apps to test as I'm having problems with them.
The apps are World Newspapers (Abhishek Kumar) & BBC News (Jim Blacker). They install fine & launch. The problem I'm having is that I can't read any of the articles over wifi. When I turn off wifi & use 3g connection everything works fine.
I've done a hard reset & installed just those two apps but same thing happens. Also what I found is after a hard reset I can't access Android market over wifi. I have to switch off wifi & sign in using 3g connection first but after that its fine
Thanks

It happened to me as well and same as you first I had to access the market with 3G connection first to pass the terms and services stage/page.
Just a wild guess here... maybe both apps need to know where you are (location/country) so they can push the right news to you and that is not possible over a wifi connection.
I have both apps installed on a Dell Streak, HTC Desire, Galaxy S & Orange San Francisco with everything working perfectly fine over wifi.

Ouch! I did say it was a wild guess. Do you own all those devices? : )
Have you tried to set your network type to 2G only to see if that helps? Please kill/stop both apps first and if you are about to change your network type then please don't forget to reset it back.
Sorry mate wasn't trying to be cocky....
I've just installed Engadget app & having problems with that as well. When using over wifi it downloads the articles text only, pictures don't load. Again over 3g the whole article including pictures downloads just fine.
FYI Pulse app displaying same behaviour...
I think I may have a faulty phone.

What you just described in above meets when Data Server is enabled. Menu>Settings>Data Manager>Data server
This feature is meant for 3G though so I don't get why that happens over your wifi.
Another thing came in my mind was that a standard router supports 4 ports (connections) and you listing dozens of devices I was wondering how many devices are connected to the router when you are using your Defy? Surely you have a couple of pc/laptop too : )

My phone speaker stopped working after a couple of weeks so I returned to Amazon for refund. My Defy definately had a problem with the apps I described including yours, but as there not much people replying to this thread then maybe it was limited to just my device.
My friend
Where are you and which ISP you are using?
I believe the problem doesn't caused by your Defy.

HI there its nothing to do with isp. I have a Dell Streak, HTC Desire, Samsung Galaxy S & JUST got a Nexus S & they all have no problems with the apps.
Oh. I'm sorry about that. Can you check /system/etc/host ? You can view that as a text file. In a normal situation you can see "localhost 127.0.0.1" . if there has any other text, could you tell me?

Should work fine. GPS uses satellites so doesn't matter where you are as long as the gps chip can pull information from them. I used my old windows mobile phone there with no issues a while back.

It will work fine, but you don't want to use the navigation app since it uses google maps which require a data connection. You DON'T want to use your data in Europe , unless you have a special plan or are on another carrier while you are there. You should get the free navigation mapfactor and download the maps you need.

Thanks Halmo I've been looking for a data-less map for awhile and Sygic wants a fortune.

Halmo yeah I wasn't planning on using Google Maps, the 80mb size limit for offline maps is too short for the distances we'll be travelling.
I'll definitely check out Mapfactor though thanks

I've had a long standing suspicion that the GPS stopped working on my Desire after I flashed a new ROM to it, but I've always been indoors when I've thought about testing it.
The other day I tried to use Google Maps to get around a town and it couldn't determine my location. I was on foot with no tall buildings around me, in other words it should have found my location easily and quickly, but no matter what I did it just didn't work.
I don't know when it stopped working, I don't know if it was a flash of some ROM/recovery/bootloader/radio that did it, but for some reason it just doesn't work anymore.
Any ideas on how to get it to work??

Cool. Will give that a whirl if I need to.
I downloaded GPS Status from the playstore and did a GPS reset/download data and I'm able to finally get a GPS lock and use Waze, etc.
I could not get any stable GPS lock for the past 2 days before -- was a little annoyed by that.
I even rebooted to ensure GPS still getting lock and it is.
I'm hoping this stays working but will keep an eye on it.

It's been almost a month now. The way I get GPS to work for me is:
1) Use GPS status ; use Tools->Manage A-GPS state; then click Reset and then Download.
2) Go outside or near a window and get a lock ; the lock should not take that long. For this step, I like "GPS Test" app (not sure it actually makes a difference but it seems to).
3) Keep GPS turned on (for Kitkat, it will be in Battery Saving mode and not used much until something asks for it.
If I do this, I've gotten consistently working GPS and locks that don't take long at all (usually less than a minute and usually faster than that).
I use Waze to/from work 5 days a week and a few times during the weekend.
BTW, I'm running CM 11 2014 05/09 nightly for hlte on my Note 3 n900t. I don't think the ROM matters.
If I reboot or power off, I plan to use the above 3 steps. Having to do this is not optimal but having a predictable way to get GPS working is useful.
Dennis
Hmm might be why I don't seen to have a problem GPS, I leave it on all the time since it doesn't use the battery unless an app is actively using it.

I wouldn't flash this. Only one person said they did without causing problems for their phone and it didn't fix the issue (for them).
You are better off trying the TOPNTP app instead. I have GPS on all the time and don't have a locking problem.
Same problem here. When I use the GPS TEST it works. When I try using Waze or Google Maps, nothing. What's funny, if there's some fun in this, is that waze works ok in background when GPS TEST is open. At least I get voice directions. When I try oppening both in multi-window, Waze stops again... I've tried everything, from stock to every rom I found, but nothing makes the GPS works with Waze and GM.
I have found the first real issue with the M8.
The GPS fails during navigation and cannot get proper lock. That meant it kept trying to recalculate routes etc...
My friends have also had same issue.
Location settings were set on the best option too. Full mobile signal and internet as well.

Google navigation and TomTom both failed on different M8s.
It works for a bit, but when it goes wrong you will know about it.
I am hoping only software, but I have no idea of issues or how to fix it.
If you are rooted or unlocked, try this GPS config ... its for quick good AGPS lock before actual GPS one.

I'm not adversed to anythng BUT I have just bought a £500 plus phone. I would rather not void a warranty yet.... also some of my apps won't work on a rooted device.
I have no problem on my phone. all is ok.
GPS has been the best I've ever experienced on a smartphone. Locks quickly and accurately and the only device ever to get a decent lock inside my concrete flat.
However, yesterday the GPS failed completely whilst driving with clear view of the sky. A reboot fixed it and it was then rock solid again.
That's the only time it's done it in about a week since owning it with about 20 hours driving with it.
I'm hoping that means it's a software issue somewhere.

Yep gonna agree works perfect with copilot. Also better than sygic imo. I also wouldn't bother with Google navigation. Better to use an offline satnav app.
I have this problem too... Doesn't seem to matter which app one are using, it also happens with my golf app... And the only way to fix it, is to reboot the phone.. This is really annoying...
It seems to be related to bluetooth use... If I use BT to play music/listen to audiobook at the same time as I use the navigation app, then I have this problem.. If I turn off the BT, then the problem does not seem to appear... I am saying seem to, because it seems to be random when this occurs so not 100% sure that turning off BT fixes the problem but so far I have not had this problem when BT is off..
I also thought this was fixed in the latest update but yesterday it happend again....
