Hi all.
I haven't rooted my phone yet and want to block ads in apps and browser. Is there any work around for this?
Ad free worked fine on my rooted Desire.

That's only for rooted phones. I don't think there are any methods that block ads unrooted yet.

Yes. Adfree and Adaway are for rooted phones. Finding a way to block in non rooted ones.

Ad blocking on Android usually involves changing the hosts file or installing a firewall- both of which require root.
Only thing I can think of is to use Firefox for Android with the Adblock extension - this will obviously only work for websites and not apps.
This is my first unrooted phone on Android, and didn't realise how intrusive these ads would be - this is putting me off Android (or shoud it read Ad-droid) big style!

well to be fair, buy the paid version then. there is almost always an ad free paid version - at least we have a choice between ads or a paid version, ios you almost always only have the paid version with no free version available.
imo this way is miles better.
the other advantage - if people buy apps, the developers will be much more inclined to continue working on that app to improve it, and also make more apps. also word of mouth will spread and other developers will also join instead of going ios only.. plus the fact that they often do put a hell of a lot of work into these apps, and they deserve some recognition (money) for that!
All the apps that I keep are the paid versions, if they are available, but some apps are only ad driven without a paid option.
The main issue for me is not with apps, but web browsing.

Some browsers have their own adblockers. Blocking ads in internet shouldn't be a problem even if you haven't rooted.

Some apps have disable ads in settings too.

I recently installed cyanogenmod 6.1.2 and for some reason it is blocking ads without any program installed to do that. I used to have have adfree installed on other roms but that's not the case anymore and I'm trying to run an app called audiogalaxy but it wont work without ads. I guess my question is does cyanogen normally block ads and if not, what might be causing this.

This worked perfectly on my Samsung Captivate! I was trying to figure out how to stop the ad blocking and this did the trick. Thanks!

Flame-retardant suit on....
As long as a developer isn't obnoxious with ad placement, and especially if they offer an ad-free version as a choice, I really don't have a problem with ads. And in fact, I could almost consider it a form of piracy to block ads. (Extra flame resistant gel added.) The developer has decided they want to be paid for their work, and there is nothing wrong with that. Whether you download a cracked version or whether you use the ad supported version and block ads, you're preventing them from getting paid. I think ad-supported apps are a reasonable compromise. They get some compensation, and you don't have to shell out a dime.
I do have ads blocked right now, and I did it because I love Angry Birds and they made it nearly unplayable with the new ad placement, and didn't allow us the choice of an ad-free version. That just ticked me off. I actually feel bad about the other developers who aren't getting paid as a result. I'm thinking about turning it off, and/or buying the ad free versions of some of those apps. I wish I could just block ads in specific apps. I have some apps that are useful, but not so useful or frequently used that I feel like paying for an ad free version, and I'd be happy to let them get some revenue from ads when I use it.
I also don't deny that I'm completely hypocritical on this with my Tivo. I'm fast forwarding through the ads of the recorded GB/Philly game as I write this. I'm NOT passing moral judgment on anyone. If you want to block ads, that's fine. As I said, I have done it myself, but as I started to think about it more, I started to question whether it's really that different than downloading a cracked version (which I won't say I've never done either, though I've been making an effort to resist and correct lately). It's just something I thought I'd bring up in case someone hasn't thought about it from that perspective.
Well I think at least (as a Noob) I am posting this in the proper place.
Anyway, I have the ota JB update plus root but I seem to be finding less free apps and more pay for apps. In fact one of the apps I had but uninstalled, when I was on the custom codename android rom is now no longer free. I also had installed my nfl team wallpaper the other day and uninstalled it (I am having really bad battery drainage issues) but decided to reinstall and now the app is not even in the store. I am not sure what is going on. I thought when you are rooted you have more free apps to choose from not less and why would that one app I had originally gotten for free on my custom JB rom, now cost $?.
for instance a few days ago the packer live cube 3d wallpaper was free but not anymore. I didn't use it due to battery drainage but I am wondering why it is no longer free.
Thanks
You are imagining things. Rooting/ custom roms have no effect on the play store. Its just developers of the apps changing things

Okay thanks. I am new to this. Why did you say I am imagining things?
1. not all apps are compatible with jelly bean, so they wont show up in your market.
2. root has nothing to do whether apps are free or paid. its just easy to steal apps with root.
3. your custom rom before could just have included a paid app into its rom, people do that. sometimes they have permission(rarely) and sometimes they are just stolen(usually).

Thank you Simms. Perfect and helpful answer!:good:
Sorta off topic but I've been shying away from free apps lately, especially games. I'd rather pay a set fee than be nickel and dimed with in app purchases and annoyed with ads.
Wondering which ad blocker works best blocking the adds.
So far my research came up with
AdFree
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigtincan.android.adfree
and
AdAway
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.adaway&hl=en
just wondering if anyone have had experience using either?
I've used AdAway for a few months and it works great. Disabled the notifications in Jelly Bean and it just does its thing in the background, which is exactly what I'm looking for.
none.
ads are there to support... i don't know.. the dev? which is supplying you the app for free?
p.s.: if you don't agree with this, then i'm sure you will find your answer. like the one by the previous poster.

I agree to a point. The other point is that these developers get money per click, and I don't intend on clicking them anyways sooooo...
The other reason I use an adblocker is for ads on websites. This site is the worst offender. Try navigating it from a mobile device with all those awful popups with the super small X.

AdAway is the best one imo.
How many people use apps like Lookout that scan your phone and supposedly offer ant-virus protection? Are they even necessary?
Don't think you'll find many that do. Other than corporate security reasons. All of is crackflashers don't stay on the same system long enough to warrant such a measure
Sent from my phone using xda premium.
I like lookout for the scream feature....my wife loses her phone all the time and if I send the code through lookouts website the phone makes a loud siren sound even when on silent or vibrate. As far as the antivirus I really dont use it
I use lookout not for the scanning feature, but for the lost phone/lock/wipe features. You never know when you might need it.
Not absolutely, i use Eset Mobile on the N4, used it for many years allready om my pc`s. Better safe than sorry. And always look at the permissions you are about to give to an app when installing.
I used Lookout for 2 years on my HTC Desire then decided to uninstall it about 6 months ago. Can't say I've missed it.
I've not put it on my N4.
Common sense, and checking permissions is much more important than an anti virus imo. Google play store already has the bouncer that scans all the apps. Most of these malware apps that users install come from people not willing to cough up a few dollars for apps and getting said apps from third party sites, and torrents often repackaged with malware, and imo it looks good on them. Support the devs, don't be so cheap, and pay for apps (not directing this at anyone here, just saying). Use the Playstore, or somewhere reputable like XDA and check permissions, there's no reason a wallpaper would need access to your contact list and private info ect. Never used an antivirus on a phone and i likely never will.
i use lookout because i need to install apks from other sources..
i need to install apks from other sources because google play does not allow apks like adaway..
i buy apps from google play.. but ads? no way..

ROM toolbox adblocker was never as good as AdAway anyway.
As far as apps like Lookout go, I'd never use an anti-bvirus scanenr etc. I use Cerberus in case I lose my phone so I can track/find or wipe it.
waste of RAM and space for antivirus apps... dont pirate apps and just download apps/games from the play store and you'll be fine.
What are you guys using for Ad Blocking on a brand new 3 XL not rooted yet.
Ad Guard with Samsung Browser is good. DN666 not bad, but sucks for Chrome. I've noticed if using Chrome almost non of the non rooted ad blockers work ?
For stock it seems Samsung Browser does ad blocking best.
I've been using adclear on my 2xl unrooted for about 6 months and it's been solid. Probably will continue with it when I get my 3xl tomorrow

Is it a battery drainer like some other Ad Blockers ?

To be a true nerd, I set up my own VPN using a Raspberry Pi, and my home network filters ads with a piHole. That way every connected device at home gets filtered, and when I'm away I VPN back to the ad filtered house network.
It's been three years of running flawlessly. It took me $70 and less than 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon, from unpacking the first package to tucking away the devices and taking it for a spin.
No rooting for any devices after you set it up. Everyone in the house gets ad blocked and it gets you in the habit of using a VPN on public networks.

What's going on with Adblock and Chrome? I've been using that combo for a while now with no issues.
Do you have HTTPS filtering turned on?
If you use Nord VPN they have a feature called cybersec that works without root and blocks ads.
Been using Blokada VPN on 2XL for a long time - very satisfied how it performs...

This is what I have been using on my Pixel 2 and my girlfriends Galaxy s8+. I use the MOAB ad blockers and a host file list made up from Keweon's DNS and it works amazingly. It also will let you white list apps if the host lists is causing issues with it (e.g. it stop spotify from running 100% and using the search function so I white list spotify). You can also choose the DNS you want to use and its open source.
AdGuard for for years now. https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/overview.html
I have been using adguard subscription. Not the one available in playstore..
It's quite expensive, but I got it for 20$on stacksocial for 2 desktops and 2 android devices lifetime.
And this works great! No ads on browsers as well as apps.
Works on my macbook as well.
Gave the other part of sub to my wife, so it's perfect!

I've managed to get youtube family premium from russia for £3.50 a month so this is my way of stopping all youtube adverts and also getting play music too.
If you use Firefox there are several extensions that block YouTube ads as well as removing many annoyances. I prefer this over running the app, Vanced or not. Better experience all around. In fact Firefox is actually my YouTube app because I use it for little else.
