Random shut down? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My Galaxy Nexus randomly shuts down and doesn't turn back on untill I turn it on manually. It will do this at the most random times even when the battery will be full. I have also noticed that my phone seems to heat up a lot as well. Could this contribute to the problem? The details of my Galaxy Nexus are: Verizon Galaxy Nexus, 4.0.4, rooted running: AOKP Build 39, franco.Kernel nightly r-194 clocked at 1.3GHz. Thank you in advance

the cpu autmagically shuts down at 110C. if you have thermal throttling off, it can easily reach that point if using heavily.

most likely the overclock isnt working well for you and is making it too hot

since you are using franco kernel, franco kernel app can enable/disable thermal throttling. it has a cpu temperature meter too. many kernels support this feature. trinity kernel, and trinity kernel toolbox can also disable/enable thermal throttling and has a cpu temperature widget. if you do have thermal throttling off, turn it on. that way when it reaches the throttle limit, itll slow down your cpu and cool off. the cpu cools off rather quickly too.

for franco kernel maybe, but id assume not just to be safe. if Francisco and Morfic implemented that option the same way then the TKT app would work. im pretty sure that i read that Francisco added the option to his franco kernel updater app. but i dont use franco kernel so im not 100%.

there is probably a terminal command, but i do not know it. everything in these kernel control apps can be done without the app, but through the terminal emulator.

Im good on everything else except when it comes the CPU thing. I have no idea what the numbers mean when you set the CPU for some reason. To slow the phones resources when the screen is off right? Can anyone point me to the direction of an app that can do this? What about an app that turns the data off once I turn the screens off. A free one. Thank you and sorry if Im not making sense or sounding dumb

SetCPU can modify the processor speed and allow you to set a profiles. However, you're running Tiamat so if you haven't changed anything your default governor is smartass which has a built in screen off profile of 128min/384max.
As far as turning data off, check out ultimatejuice. There is a free version that is limited in what it does, but it might be worth paying for. Also, for battery saving, check out my EVO link in my sig for some undervolting mods.
You can set the cpu governor with a program called setCPU on the marketplace. You can further control the CPU by flashing another kernel. What ROM are you running? Stock? I would try the netarchy kernel (newest version) if you're running a sense-based ROM.. I've found it has phenomenal battery life (medium use i get 15-20hrs) and I'm overclocked to 1.152ghz.
A program called tasker can also make your data connection go off and back on with the screen. I'm unsure how to set the profile but I do know thats possible. Try looking around here: http://tasker.wikidot.com You should be able to find something about it.
EDIT: Nevermind about netarchy, did not see your signature on your ROM and kernel.
ok, so ur on aosp and tiamat. try changing governer to smartass. will give you much better battery life, and you won't have to worry about 'numbers'.
btw the numbers are the cycles per second, or the speed the cpu works at. i personally underclock to 537 (998 is stock) to save a bunch of battery, and it still runs perfectly fine for me (cm7 with tiamat)

Thanks everybody! ....Viperboy thanks for the info unfortunately I still have lots of questions haha. And yes I already been through all the viper undervoltings, 25 through INSANE! A question I have is with those vipervoltings, I assume they'll show different results depending on which kernel and rom i'm running correct? Plus im pretty much sticking with MIUI....I usually use the 25 vipervolting. Now I'm on tiamat v4.0.3. Are you saying sense I'm using tiamat its already set to smartass, so it'll be unnecessary to use the setcpu app? Also I like savZen to what's the default governor on that? Final question, turning the data off when the screen goes off using ultimatejuice unnecessary if I'm running tiamat? Sorry for the bombarding of questions thanks again

Yes, most of the scripts lower by a certain range. So it all depends on the kernel you are running. Some of my scripts (Extreme, Insane, v2 scripts) specify all the voltages so no matter what kernel you're running, it sets the voltages to exact values. If you can go lower than -25 and you're stable, do it!
I find SetCPU unnecessary. I only have it installed because I use it for testing my mods and things, but I that's the only reason. But smartass is good enough for me, no other governors give me as good batter life. Defauly governor on SZ is their own governor (SavagedZen) it's based on interactive, I believe. There is more info on their site.
Tiamat (or any kernel for that matter) don't turn off 3G when the screen is off. You would need an app to do that.

Uses a good bit of memory, for one. Two, because the kernels here run pretty good right out of the box.

That, I totally agree with, but for he average user, few know how to set it correctly and they end up with a placebo effect, or more problems.

I couldn't agree more. Setting up a basic screen off profile with a conservative setting is useful, otherwise it actually gets in the way of already built in kernel benefits, actually undoing them in many cases. I stopped using setcpu a while ago and my battery life has not suffered at all.

Undervolt gNex w/franco

I tried searching but didn't turn up anything..
I'm running AOKP milestone 4 and Franco'a kernel.
I'd like to undervolt it because I've got plenty of performance and undervolting did wonders for battery life on my old OG Droid.
I know I saw controls for the voltages the other day but I can't find them to save my life now.
Help?

SetCPU or Franco's Kernel Updater app

franco's kernel update and setcpu were the first place I looked but no love.
Didn't find anything promising in setcpu .
franco has a OC/UV tab which sounded promising but is only showing over clock stuff. the Calibrated Voltages tab sounded good too but seems to be read only for me (and I am su).
Also tried jrummy's Android Overclock. No joy there either.
I KNOW I saw it somewhere the other day!

Hope this helps

Curioser & curiuoser... ROM Control was the first place I looked today and is definitely where I think I saw it the other day.
But now I only have two sections under Performance: "SET CPU" and "FREE MEMORY".
The SET CPU section has "Max CPU", "Min CPU", "Scaling governor" and "Set at boot" but nothing about voltages.
I'm beginning to feel like I've fallen down a rabbit hole!
Did you mod anything? It should be located there...
Here is a screenshot of my performance menu, it's German but it figures
The menu points are Max CPU, Min CPU, Governor, Set on Boot and Voltage Control, running M4 and Franco...
i think voltages only show up if you're rooted and your kernel supports it.

Yes. Some versions of franco kernel disabled the undervolt feature. Make sure you flash the latest nightly (110 at the time of writing) and check the options in the franco updater app. You should see the Undervolt option.
Mystery solved!
V6 Supercharger was the culprit. This phone runs so well I probably don't need that anyway. Just ran it out of habit, I suppose.
Unfortunately I didn't notice this for a week and running the uninstall doesn't restore the voltage controls. I'll have to restore back to there and then redo all my changes for the past week manually. Oh well..

One X keeps overheating

Hi!
It's the summer where I live and it's like above 40°C in my appartment (Yeah, I've a free sauna, jealous?), and this cause my One X to overheat all the time, I'm not even doing "heavy" stuff, just browsing the Internet or Facebook via Wifi, I already tried to slow down the CPU to 1200Mhz but it is still very hot, is there a solution to avoid this issue (apart from "DON'T TOUCH IT!"), I can't believe that Taiwan is a cold country and that the HTC was not made to work at 40°C...
You can see my ROM and Kernel above this message (signature) I'm trying to install Viper ROM to see if it fixes the issue... :fingers-crossed:
Nevermind, I fixed it, I used wrong voltage and too low down threshold value in SetCPU which caused the CPU to overheat and stand longer activated, silly me

[Q] Issues on my galaxy nexus.

Well i'm having issues with this phone. it's getting hot when browsing and even facebook, like 60+ Degrees. Games get even hotter. but it's getting real cold quickly. And getting hot means Drains battery real quick. i get -10% of battery by playing a game for like, 5-10 mins.
is this an issue on 4.2.2? Because i haven't got this issue since i got into 4.2.2
i'm currently on Paranoid android 3.50 and fancy kernel r24. no extra settings.
Baseband is UGLL1 if that's necessary.
This is my first thread btw. i'm sorry if there's some mistakes or something if there's another info you need tell me .

Unable to stick at lower CPU freq

I am currently using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2306650 , but i doubt its the rom fault.
Using the MIUI settings, Antutu CPU master, or ROM ToolBox, applying a lower CPU max freq will not stick.
Ex: The max is 1890mhz, but i want it at 1566mhz for the max. After turning the phone off and on, the max CPU freq. goes back to the original 1890mhz. With a reboot, it sticks, half the time.
What do i do? Please reply ASAP, my S4 gets hot while playing games so i like to underclock it.
With many years of experience, the best thing I can tell you is to not place a MHz cap that is too high. Your phone can potentially be a potato if you're not careful.

SetCPU has different profiles to configure. And which ROM are you on? There might be an init.d script adjusting the frequencies. SetCPU will apply them AFTER any init.d scripts are ran so that should fix it. I loved SetCPU till ktoonsez made his own app.

Does PAC ROM have this issue? If not, I'll use pac rom instead. Or it may be a kernel problem? Idk much about android stuff

Sounds like the kernel is overriding certain things in different scenarios. I'd try a different kernel.
