is there any ics roms that bypasses the power key...ive tried almost every unlock app in play store and most are outdated and dont work. went to sprint to have serviced, they said might be a battery issue so they ordered me new battery see if that helps if not looks like ill be geting a refurb
I'm on AOKP, and one of the mods included is an option that when checked, will wake your phone by pressing one of the volume rockers. I don't know how you'd relock it without waiting, but this would help you unlock the screen Hope it helps

CM9 has the same feature as well, so there are a few options.

I do not use my power button to lock my screen so if there is a way to to unlock your phone using the volume rocker, you can use that and then us something like "Lock Screen Tools" to re-lock it.
I installed this because I wanted to use my power button less, as I wore out the power button on my EVO!
Anyway I have the icon just sitting on my main screen, I hit it and poof, the phone locks and the screen shuts off. Seems to work both GB and ICS, I used it on TCP and KBizzle's AOKP Build 37 when I was testing it out. It's working on the GB ROM I'm running now too.

Is there either an app to completely eliminate the lock screen?
I'm running CM and there is an option to unlock by pressing Power>Menu or through gestures but either way that's an additional step - just like my rotary unlock.
There's an app in Market called No Lock that does the same thing.
What I want is just press Power and I'm at the home screen. No 2nd buttons, no Menu button, no sliding, no gestures.
And since I know this question will come up, no I'm not concerned about dialing or anything else, capacitive buttons/screen, remember?
Plus I have a case that bevels over the Power and Volume buttons so... yeah...
Thanks!

Hey man, its already built into CM. One of the options for the Notification Power Widgets is to Toggle the Lockscreen. Just set Toggle Lockscreen as one of your widgets in the CM settings, and click it and you can completely turn your lockscreen on and off.

Wow, how'd I miss that..?
But I see it allows you to turn the phone on w/ the volume buttons too... That's not good b/c I usually switch tracks w/ the volume buttons when the phone is in my pocket or when I'm driving - especially when I'm driving.
Any way to only let the power button turn the phone on?

Ye.. I said in the OP that I know about No Lock. The problem with no lock is that, just like the CM no lock option, it allows the phone to be woken up by the volume buttons too. Something that's a major deal beaker for me.

Auto Unlock. Only the power button wakes the phone. Sometimes, you will see the lock screen flash on before it's dismissed.

My Desire has just came contact with water yesterday.
I suppose everything is fine.
Just that my volume rocker(vol. down) is stuck.
So whenever I try to turn on my phone, it will bring me to the hboot.
I can't even use the volume rocker to get me to the recovery
Is there anyway that I can turn on my phone?
Thank you very much
Can't you move in hboot at all (vol up?)?
Have you tried vol down + power + trackball to reboot your phone? (This way you wouldn't start the phone with power and vol down, maybe that's enough to boot into the rom.)
However if you boot into rom a whole new set of nightmares would greet you. Phone always silent etc. (Yet you might be able to use button remapper to assign "nothing" to that button.)
If I were you I would pop out battery and put the phone in slightly elevated temperature (white some free air movement) and hope it would completely dry out. That would probably enough to fix the switch. How long did you let your phone dry after "weting" it?
Stick your phone in rice with the battery out for a few days, then boot into Fastboot (back & power), and run a RUU. You can find one for your network from shipped-roms.com. Just make sure you download a Froyo one not an Eclair one.
Hmm, I've tried the rice method it doesn't work
I've left it for around 12 hours
I disassembled the whole and sever the volume circuit already :X
However.. it still doesn't work
It still forces me into hboot
I can't seems to get to fast boot either
It would be fine If i can gain control in hboot, so I can boot into recovery and boot into system.
I only want to save all my messages before.. dumping the phone :x
If there any other ways?
Thank you for the help

U can use ButtonRemapper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464) to assign volume functionality to other buttons. This only works within the booted rom, however.

Hmm.. do you have any idea of disabling the volume button?
I'm not sure, what happens if you edit volume down and set state to 'none' in remapper?
Or you can try editing
/system/usr/keylayout/bravo-keypad.kl
(needs root and system mounted as R/W)
and delete the characters after key 115 and key 114 (or maybe even delete both lines)
create a backup first (or if u use Root Explorer's Text editor it will create automatically create one before saving)
Oh, okay, thank you, once again, you have save my life!!

I don't think it is the power button, as when I'm using my phone, my phone doesn't auto lock itself...
It just auto wakes
Is there any app, there can find which button is faulty?

What rom are you using?
In BCM (CM9 source) there are two options in settings/display at the bottom in wakeup options section: volume rocker wake and trackball wake. If you have those, uncheck them.

Ever since I've flashed the leaked "stock" 4.0.4 ROM the volume buttons will wake the screen as well as the power button. (I'm told stock doesn't do this so someone has been playing around....?) I don't recall which 4.0.4 ROM I downloaded but regardless - if your Nexus does this and you don't like it, here is how to fix it.
Navigate to /system/usr/keylayout/ with Root Explorer or such and mount as read/write.
Make a backup of tuna-gpio-keypad.kl -- just in case
Then open tuna-gpio-keypad.kl in a text editor.
You will see 3 values after all of the header text information:
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE
key 116 POWER WAKE
Delete the "WAKE" from the buttons you wish NOT to have wake the phone.
Save the file and restart.
FINALLY! No more accidental unlocking. I'm not sure why one would want the volume keys to unlock the phone when the power button does already but to each their own.
Consequently... if you wanted your stock phone to wake on volume you could maybe open the file and add in the "WAKE" - or the whole lines if they aren't already there. No guarantees on that though. Also no guarantees on this either - of course.
Why would anyone want that? Because its less wear and tear on the power button. I almost always only used the volume for audio. So allowing it to wake the device is allowing me to use volume and power buttons more evenly.

That doesn't happen on stock anyway, even if leaked. Not unless someone enabled it before you flashed it.

The big problem for me is I use Tasker to automatically switch to different volume modes based on where I am. Having such a big button on one side seems to almost daily get triggered and then my ringer isn't where I want it or I miss calls/texts because it got on silent (one volume press down from vibrate). I've also done weird things accidentally because I'll reach in my pocket and touch a volume button and as I'm pulling it out things get touched on the screen.
I should probably also mention I'm not using a lock screen - that's probably also part of what makes it such a pain having it accidentally pressed.
Again, to each their own. I found it annoying for my situation so I'm sure someone else will as well and will appreciate the tutorial.

Right. Which is why I'm wondering why a "stock" 4.0.4 ROM had this messed with.... I wish I remembered which ROM it was because I think it was mis-labeled... lol
Must have been
I've heard this a couple times, but I flashed my wife's phone with IMM30B (the ota, not a rom) when it leaked, and it has never existed this behavior.
Mah-ha! Googled the kernel version and found it.

Here's another reason. The pogo pins are on the same side as the power button. So when the phone is in the horizontal desktop dock you can't unlock the phone. At least not with anything less than 4.0.4 and I'm not sure how they do it because I don't have it yet. It may very well be with that change to the power button. That may be why they did it in 4.0.4.

Doubt it as the method in 4.0.4 doesn't work with slide unlock. It only works when the os is not locked.
So the volume only wakes the screen if not locked. If it is locked, it does not work.
I can confirm that the volume buttons wake the device on a 100% stock Sprint Galaxy Nexus. I checked the file and sure enough, both buttons on the volume rocker have WAKE next to them. Kind of annoying when the phone constantly wakes throughout the day due to my slightly-snug case. I was going to wait and see how long I could go before rooting, but this may just be a deal breaker.
so i can add the volume wake in a stock rom by entering those lines?
edit: those lines are there.. but volume doesnt wake

So adding the "WAKE" doesn't cause the volume buttons to wake the phone? Interesting.

I have my device set to lock with a pattern, if that's what you mean. I press the power button to lock the device and turn the screen off, then when I press either button on the volume rocker, the phone's screen turns right back on and prompts me to enter the pattern, just as pressing the power button would.
Huh...Sprint must have changed the behavior, because AOSP 4.0.4 only works that way if it is not locked.

They must have; the only reason I can think of would be, as I believe someone else mentioned in the thread, the upcoming (current?) availability of an official dock would mean that the phone can't be woken up without the volume keys, unless you physically remove it from the dock, press the power button, then re-dock it.
The pros way outweigh the cons with the Galaxy Nexus. Especially if your not rooting. Because you could easily change the volume wake feature.
You go to another phone because you don't want to root and change a feature-and then get a phone with “skin" over ICS? You also get all kinds of crapware from the manufacturer and carrier. Again, the GN stock is still a better choice than a lot of other devices.

Oh for sure. I'm by no means saying that I'm turning in my Galaxy Nexus because a button does something that I don't want it to do. Eventually I'll root it and just edit the file to suit my needs.
I completely agree that the pros outweigh the cons on the GN. Hell, I stuck with a Samsung Moment for two and a half years, despite all of its craptastic bugs, issues, and painful nuances.
I was merely pointing out that this is my biggest gripe with the phone thus far, and given that it's a pretty minor one, I'd say we're all doing pretty well with the device.
Hi guys.
So i managed to get my desire wet/damp and whilst it still works it has developed 3 issues:
1) The weirdest of all - the phone wont go into standby, as soon as you press the power button or let it timeout the screen goes off and they instantly turns back on to the lock screen. If i leave it, it will timeout again on lockscreen and come back on, it does this forever. I have done factory resets etc, all the same. Weird right
2) Volume keys do not work - think means i had issues getting into recovery. Finally found a widget to do it and then....
3) Trackpad does not work in recovery so i cannot re-flash or try any new rom to see if that fixed (1)
Proper catch 22
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Brisgstfer
UPDATE
OK I HAVE AN UPDATE:
The plot thickens but i have managed to S-OFF my Desire and eventually install Clockworkmod Touch which obviously doesn't require me to use the trackpad button so I was able to use Recovery. I wiped the phone and tried reflashing the ROM i had been using (Insertcoin) but this made no difference, the phone still keeps waking up immediately that it goes to sleep (either with power button or by sleeping timeout).
So i decided to install a completely different ROM (CM10_VJ_4.1.2_v3.0) and this installed fine. Now the phone will go to sleep and stay asleep if I press the power button. Problem solved I thought!
Now when the phone is asleep 50% of the time, trying to wake it with the power button will cause it to reset immediately and goto the white HTC screen. When it restarted it sits on the unlock screen and keeps timing out, screen goes off, then immediately on again - weird. If i unlock and lock with power button it will behave. For some reason the Search key will wake the phone every time no issues. Only the power key to unlock causes it to reset. Phone is sleeping according to Battery info.
Any other suggestions for what I could try. Could this possibly be something hardware related now? If there a way i can log the key presses or reason it wakes/resets?
Any help really appreciated, the phone is pretty unusable with this reset issue now.
THanks

Thanks mate. So i tried this and installed CM7 today and have discovered something. As i said above the volume down button doesn't work and the volume up only works with some persuasion. Once i installed CM7 the problem where I lock phone with power key and it instantly wakes up now persists (on the JB rom it at least stayed asleep but reset if power button was pressed again).
However whe i changed the display timeout to 15seconds i watched as it timed out and instantly woke then noticed the volume would increment down one notch each it woke up again. This leads me to think that rather then the volume down not working at all it is actually stuck down permanently and could be causing the issue here. Is there any way I can find out if this is the case and disable the volume keys through software or do i need to open up the phone and disconnect it?
Thanks for any help - i think we are getting there!

Flash a ROM which can be unlocked via trackpad and volume can be adjusted from the phone settings without touching volume keys and the power button on the top.
I recommend MildWild5.8 based on CM7. When I was on it, I totally forgot about volume and power keys because all the phone operations can be done without them.
Thanks thats a great suggestion. I actually worked out that the trackpad is being pressed down constantly too because on CM7 when i disable trackpad to wake the phone actually stays asleep.
Is there any way to disable both volume and trackpad buttons at the kernal/system level?
Hi! Sorry if this has been posted before.
I have a very unreliable Gnex. The Power Button is completely broken and i have charging problems. The phone charges whenever it wants plus the battery doesn't hold up charging that well.
I am on stock Android 4.2.2, would like to root it to find a solution for my Power Button. To this date. June 2013, what's the best ROM i should root my Gnex with, to help me with my broken power button and charging issues.
I never rooted a device, so if anyone can comment a bit. My volume buttons do work. Any links are appreciated, just a heads up which way should i go.
Thanks!
Have exactly the same Issues with my GNex.
Use "Auto Screen On" to activate your Screen with the proximity Sensor and "Widgetsoid" to turn Screen off with a Notification-Widget.
Charging problem is weird. Try other USB Cable. And clean your Port with alcohol.
your power button doesnt work so you'd be hard pressed to unlock and root the device.
Things to do if Power button doesn't work.
How to reboot!
Remove your battery, connect the charger, plug in the battery.
On the insertion of battery, if the charger is already connected then the phone boots up.
Tip: If your power button is broken, try and make sure your phone never runs out of battery.
How to lock the phone?
Download a custom ROM. Most custom ROMs have custom toggles. The QuickSetting toggles have a Lock/Standby/Sleep/Power tile too. I prefer CM tiles, but AOKP tiles are good too.
How to lock the phone?
Use a kernel supported by PGM. Most kernels now are supported by PGM. You can try out some like Fancy, Anarkia, Franco, Lean, Trinity, etc.
With PGM, you just need to slide your finger from left to right to unlock the phone.
I hope this helped you.
All the best.
Broken screen phones can be had for very cheap on some auction sites. I got mine for 65.00 to replace the main logic board that went bad. Just saying if your not getting rid of it soon, try fixing it. They are very easy to work on.
