ICS based roms and wifi issues - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Has anyone else had constant wifi issues with ics based roms? For example my range seems like it jas dropped dramtically. And if I leave my wifi on and set my phone down even for a small length of time amd pick it back up to browse the web or perform any internet based actiony device just hangs for a while. Its almost like it might be a wifi wake issue. Its really anoying and most times i have to switch between 3g and wifi just to get an internet connection back. I have seen this on all ics flavors i have ran so far. I am currently running a fresh install of ff18 i wanted to have that as my base to try and deduce what the issue could be....

FWIW I have noticed similar with FF18 - didn't have these issues with FF02, the prior build that I had on this phone. I don't get the wi-fi sleep that people mention but I do see the signal drop and the occasional delays in apps. Also did a full flash but copied previous wpa_supplicant.conf due to need for custom file.

Like you they didn't appear until I flashed FF18. I'm considering flashing the FF02 modem to see if this corrects - I'll let you know what happens.
(Odd since there shouldn't be any changes in this process since FE26...)

Yeah try a different modem. The FF modems seem to have issues but FD26 works good for me all around

Flashed FD26 modem everything else is still FF18 right away I noticed better wifi performance but it is still a little early to tell. But apps dont seem to lag anymore while attempting to connect to the internet. And wifi seems to find the routers right away and connect almost instantly. Also while going almost out of wifi range I am still getting a signal and able to surf the internet. Before if I was almost out of range I couldnt do anything and had to drop my wifi connection and switch to 3g. So these are the things I have noticed so far but I will continue testing and report back.
On a side note I had an office space sound board installed it was 20 or so MB and after flashing the model it was uninstalled and everytime I try and reinstall it I get an error that says "Can not install onto sd card" I thought this was really crazy and should be completely unrelated. Yet now I cant reinstall this app. So I am wondering if there is some kind of bug in FD26 though could possibly inhibit certain apps from being written to the sd card?

[Q] Slow wifi on CM9

Yesterday, i have unlocked and rooted my phone to put CM9 nightly on my galaxy nexus[GSM]. Everything works fine but i have one issue, the wifi speed is really slow on my phone.
this is the rom that i flashed on my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398495
I have tested on speedtest.net and i am getting less than 0.5mpbs. I have looked over my router and other devices, they are getting 5mpbs. Is this an issue with CM9? On stock settings for the nexus i get 5mpbs.
Is there a fix around this?
What is your broadband connection rated at? 5/10/15/20...mbps? If you are rated at 15 or 20 and your only getting 5 on other devices you could have a router issues.
Does the speed get any better when you are within 5 feet of the router?
Do you have multiple Wireless Routers/AP's?
there is no difference if i am beside or 20 feets away from it. I still get less than 0.5 mpbs. There was no issue when i was using the stock version of GNexus 4.0.2.
I only have one router.
I have managed to fix the problem, can a mod please delete this thread?
I have the same problem. When I restore back to stock, the problem goes away. I do have the FD01 radio firmware installed.

Hi folks
I was having the same problems. I just upgraded to 9-20120511-NIGHTLY-maguro and my wifi issues have gone.

Try rebooting your router. I've been using CM9 for weeks now and the only time I've had issues were with my router.
This isn't even the fastest.. just a random test. CM9 Nightly 5/11.

I have the same problem after I assigned my phone a static IP on my home router. Search on MAC randomization for this issue. There are several kernels that fix this. I believe Franco, Trinity, and Imoseyon will work. I wish the stock cm9 kernels would get fixed for this issue.
Sprint GN, Tapatalk
Do you have some sort of QoS setting on your router keeping it from providing the speed to certain devices or something like that? I agree with the others, first thing I would do is factory reset my router.
Having a similar issue my epic is doing 25mbps on a 30mb line but both of my gnexs on different roms are only getting g 10-12????
Sent From My Sprint Galaxy Nexus via XDA Premium
I've also noticed that my Wifi performance is seriously degraded and very slow. At first I thought it was my connection, but further testing narrowed the issue to my Gnex only. I get very long 1000+ms ping times using the speedtest app and get a stuttery 1-2mb/s down and up, when every other device in my house (6+) is showing upwards of 20mb/s down and 2mb/s up. I have replicated the horrible ping and download times from various wifi hotspots.
To test further, I reverted to a backup nightly with no change. I went back as far as my 04/29 build and the problem remained. Maybe I just didn't notice it before, but I'm not certain. I have even flashed other ROMs such as AOKP and speedtest showed superfast results.

Wonder what AOKP did to it because myself and many others finds wifi to suck on the stock roms.
The wifi problem goes away when i use a kernel that addresses MAC randomization.

Figured out the cause of the slow wifi
I found out what the issue was with my wifi slowness and awful ping times.
I re-installed the latest Nightly and this time I did a "wipe data" (wiping out all of my apps) and my speedtest results were awesome again. Essentially a clean install. After reinstalling my apps one by one, I've been running speedtest each time and found that Doubletwist/Airsync was the cause of my slowness. Uninstalling DoubleTwist/AirSync and then rebooting fixed the speed/ping issue right away. HTH.

You could also try AirDroid (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid) as an alternative to upload/download files to your phone.

How to fix Call Dropping ???

I've had this phone about a month, and I can't have a phone call longer than 15 minutes without the call dropping. It has nothing to do with my location, because I have an Evo and older Epic in the same house and neither of them have a signal problem.
I have tried multiple PRLs and modems, including EL29, EK02, and many of the newer ones like FD19, FD24, FD26, FE07, etc.
Some of the newer modems were terrible, in that once I got loss of signal it would stay that way and I'd have to reboot. With EL29 and EK02, the loss of signal appears for only a few seconds, but when that occurs during a call the call drops.
seems like a weird issue, and looks like you have explored software related issues. One thing you could try is a network reset and force the phone to re-activate on the network, you will need your MSL though. If your device is rooted then you can get it. once you have your msl, go to the dial pad and do ## 72786#, it will ask you for your msl and should reset, this just clears out your programming information and should force the device to go through hands free activation. Not sure if it will help, but I don't think it could hurt.
Tried that also, same problem.
You stated that you've changed prls and modems. Have you tried any different roms?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I'm currently using Blazer 4.1 ROM.
One thing I've noticed, is if I turn off 3G data, then the Loss of Signal occurs a lot less often. Today I had a 40 minute call that didn't drop once I turned off 3G. Before I turned it off, I had 5 consecutive calls drop before they reached 20 minutes.
However, it's not a total fix, because I still get Loss of Signal from time to time with 3G off.
ever find a solution to this? this seemed to only appear when i went from a GB to a ICS rom.. but even after i flashed back to my GB rom/older modem, the problem is still there..
Ive had issues network related on mine. Certain roms well kernals mess with things that need left alone. Are you running one of the LOS kernals? I had constant issues with them. Try doing a full format then flash to stock unrooted eg30 then use ota up to ics. Then flash on. Ive fixed many issues with this method. IT seems when we flash flash flash it messes with it. But flashing back to true stock formated does seem to help

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!

*Unbelievably long Data Loading times. It takes 5 minutes to get my speedtest Ping.*

Hey. I flashed task's AOKP 8/26 rom and started experiencing strange loading times when on the internet. I just flashed Paranoid Android's rom today and I'm having the same result. SpeedTest app says I only have 40-100ms ping, but takes 5 minutes for it to actually find that data.
It says on the top that I am in '4G'
I don't think it's a throttling issue, I get 20 Mb/s down after speed test finishes
My ping is 95ms, but it takes about 4 or 5 minutes to finish the ping process
I am on the LTE settings that came with my ROM and they are the same as task's as well.
Upload speed is around .84, 4.0, 3.0 MB/s respectively
All Web-browsing, SpeedTest app, Google Music, and Play Store take forever to initially load
Any ideas on what it could be or what I could try? I have tried flashing the latest modem, same result as I had on task's and Paranoid's rom.
I was just about to post a thread on this same issue. Its driving me nuts!
I fist noticed the issue when I flashed from CM9 to CM10. Today I tried task's jb aokp ROM. Same issue. So I flashed cm9, it didn't get any better. Next I'm gonna try Odin back to stock. What's really odd to me is WiFi is unaffected. Only when on 3g/4g.
I've checked my imei, and its still correct. I've tried all 3 available modems.
I'm not to sure what else to try. Hopefully we can come up with a solution.

Have you all with these issues posted these with the ROMS thread and brainstorm with other users of the ROM? You could try that. I personally heard great things about Task's ROMS and paranoids. To make sure, have you all tried wiping EVERYTHING in recovery and i mean wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, before flashing the ROM? You all might have to do that and then report back.

wow, wasn't expecting people with the same issue lol. I checked my Data usage also. Only at 4.1 out of 5 Gigs.
And yes Bruce, thanks for the suggestion. I wipe everything possible before every flash and always have. To the point where I even wipe things twice without realizing. (Cache, Dalvik, storage, system, cache, etc etc, even the eemc).
Tried basic apn settings as well as the 'phone' hdspa+ settings. same issue. reflashed over and over again, problem persists.
AT&T is beginning to work on a major LTE rollout from what I understand. I suspect this is a side effect of preparation. It would be interesting to see what going back to stock does.

That's what I thought too but flashing back to stock with Odin seemed to fix it. Problem started after installing 9-02 cm10.
how are you guys doing on this issue?
i flashed back to stock as well and my problems were fixed.
...really want a modded rom though. think it's a cm10 issue?
Same here. Flashed back yo stock because my h+ was behaving like 2g...seems to have helped quite a bit.

I see similar behavior while stock, have managed to not root and flash yet. Although, in my case it isn't actually 5 minutes, but there's definitely latency, it just doesn't normally show up in the ping time.
A friend with his also at stock (never rooted nor flashed) mentioned he was seeing this as well...
I too have been getting problems. I thought initially that it was due to Task's ROM, but then i went back to CM10. And im still getting these issues. My girlfriend is running AOKP on her SG3 on Tmobile, and she's not getting data issues. Im thinking its a problem with AT&T.
I was about to go back to stock and see how that goes. But since 78c10 says he sees no improvement, then....idk wats going on. =(
stock not rooted. same here.. takes forever for things to load. the connection seems to stall for a bit then kick back in.. has to be something with att not the phone or roms etc..
Having the same issue. Just got done wiping everything and formatting my SD. Still VERY slow. Was going to try stock next.
On task's AOKP.
If anyone finds a solution please post.

Everyone here should post their issues and location because they've been rolling out LTE here in Philadelphia & it caused a lot of the same issues for me & others. It may be completely unrelated but it's a strange coincidence considering how much work they're doing on LTE right now.

It seems to be hit and miss here I just keep rebooting and then I'll get lucky one time and it will have a snappy data connection lol and its universal so I think its an ATT thing. I have been back and forth between stock, ktoonsez, and cm10 today and it isn't bias. I am in fort Irwin, CA right now and am straddling H and H+ but with solid bars... and sometimes I can't even load xda it will take like 5 minutes but what in really find strange is that I can stream Netflix...

A few of us in the Houston area are reporting data connection problems (reported in AOKP thread). Someone stated that Houston has been having problems with their LTE network... This would make sense, as i was at a friends house in the heights on Sunday, and we had full bars LTE and neither of us could connect or stream anything data wise. Now, while I'm on latest AOKP, he has a skyrocket, and is running stock ICS... So it has to be the network.
I live in the Woodlands, and ive been having the same issues up here too (just speed tested, & topped out at 9 mb/s - i remember getting upwards of 40 mb/s when I first got this phone). Really starting to piss me off.
Anyone in the Houston area herd anything from AT&T yet?

Just to let everyone know my issue was solved by going back to a 8/25 AOKP flash and whola, perfect again.
I would have to say that its related to the current builds. At least on mine.

[Q] losing wifi connectivity- full bars but all gray

so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out. I can try opening a terminal window and pinging the gateway/dns servers and can't even reach the gateway.
things I have tried:
- turned off MAC filtering on the wifi AP
- switched from a 5 GHZ wifi on the AP to 2.4 GHZ net on the AP and vice versa
- manually set the phone wifi preference to one or the other (5 or 2.4)
- battery pull on the phone
- delete network settings for my AP and reconfigure
I have not yet tried a static IP config on the phone but I can easily try that... {edited to add} well, I tried static config and that didn't help at all...
one other tidbit of info, I have a work Blackberry with wifi and it never loses wifi connectivity so this is a problem unique to my Nexus.
I'm running Cyanogen 10.0.0-toro and no, I haven't tried a full wipe and reload yet.
thoughts or suggestions?
I'm not trying to threadjack here, but I just wanted to share my experiences.
I've been have the exact same thing happen to my phone (Nexus maguro). I've tried every JB rom I could find, several different kernels and my wifi eventually always goes grey on me. All network activities stop. I'm back on stock everything right now and it still happens.
It happens on my home wifi as well as work wifi.
I'm about to puttstock ICS on my phone and try that out for a couple days.
Anyway, good luck with your problems, i'm going to follow this thread in hopes you'll get a solution that may help me.
If I do figure anything out i'll post back.

seems that this is a topic that has been posted on a bit over time with no real single culprit or fix. I'll post back if I figure anything out... I know in the Cyanogen thread, I saw info that stated that the MAC address of the phone was changing and I'm going to try and determine if that is happening to mine.
I have the same issue. Sometimes even when i pick up the phone, if i look fast enough i see that the Wi-Fi bars weren't even there! Thats only 1 out of 5 times though. The other time its usually just grey bars. Sometimes it actually will click back and they'll flash to blue and grey 2-3 times and then go solid blue. Then sometimes like you, they'll stay grey. I've tried everything too...reverting to stock, Different kernels, ROMs, routers, static IP, 2.4 or 5ghz, full auto mode. The only fix that makes it a little more reliable, is using Wi-Fi PM Fast. But even that, is not reliable. I'd say its about 50% reliable then, for a huge sacrfice in battery life. For me i've noticed this started to happen with 4.2. Before that i never had a problem. All other devices though no problem. My Nexus 7 is just fine. But the galaxy nexus, no matter what router or where i am, the Wi-Fi is totally unreliable. For me, it happens within 2 minutes that it will disconnect most times. Then 1 in 10 times it'll be fine for 10 hours.
In all honesty, i've given up. Just come to deal with it. Use mobile networks when i'm not needing to download. I can download files and stream music just fine too. If there is traffic going through, it never disconnects. But when its just sitting there without traffic, it disconnects, or, loses connection to google servers i should say.
well that's not good to hear...
I installed stock 4.0.4 a couple days ago and have not had my wifi go grey on me yet.

yeah, I love Cyanogen so not willing to go back to stock... waiting for them to finish 10.1 and I guess I'll see how it behaves then.
Hi all,
Just to say that I have the same problem. I have been upgraded from ICS to 4.2 and nothing had happened but I had to downgrade to 4.1.1 (AOKP Build 4) due to other issues and after that I started notice the WiFi problem.
At first I thought it was when the screen went off, but I has happened with screen on too. I have to turn WiFi off and the back on to connect properly again, very annoying.
As I said I started noticing this after I downgraded, but then again, I had used AOKP 4.1.1 before without this issue. I think that it is time to change my phone :/

I'm on Muzzy 4.2.2 and I'm currently having the same problem. It's not a new problem since I remember having it months ago (disabled my phone's WiFi because I kept missing emails and other notifications - grew tired of dealing with it). I thought it was my router, so I swapped it with a newer one recently, but it carried forward (old router was TRENDnet Draft N and the new one is ASUS RT-N66U).
I would like to know how to properly troubleshoot this problem.
I'm glad I didnt have to create a thread for this. I have been facing this problem quite a lot. I can confirm that WiFi works absolutely fine until 4.1.2, whether it is stock or CM10 (I havent tried the other ROMs yet). I have faced this problem only from 4.2. It still exists on 4.2.2. Happens on all the ROMs I have tried till now including CM10.1 nightly as well as the stock factory image.
When the phone is sleeping, it seems to lose WiFi connectivity and when woken up, the WiFi bars is grey though it is full. If I am very lucky, it will turn blue automatically. Most of the times, I have to switch WiFi off and back on for it to connect properly.
Anyone knows the root cause for this? In case this has been discussed in any other thread?

have you posted this information over in any of the threads where the developers are working such as Cyanogen in an effort to bring this issue to the forefront for more visibility?
I have had those wifi problems with every android version and rom I had on my GNex as far as I can remember.
Sometimes it will be able to reconnect but sometimes I have to disable and re-enable wifi to get it back.
I too thought that it might have been my crappy router as I have had multiple problems with it over the years (some Linksys router).
This is really annoying because it won't receive any e-mails until I randomly decide to have a look at my phone. :/

trust me, I understand your frustration... some days, I can go almost all day without loosing wifi data throughput and other days it won't last 10 minutes without going to gray bars.
unfortunately, no one is sharing any fixes which tells me that no one has a good handle on the problem.
Same issue for me on stock Android 4.2.2. Leave WiFi on overnight and when I wake up its connected to WiFi but gray bars...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
The update to 4.2.2 drivers have fixed all WiFi issues for me. For the first time since 4.1 I can now use WiFi optimization now. And WiFi is fully reliable.

so, I've read around here on the XDA forum about problems with wifi connectivity where we have full bars for wifi but they are gray and you are not getting out. many describe my situation but I've not seen any real solutions...
my problem is that I can connect to my wifi router without issue but then a random amount of time later, sometimes fairly quickly and sometimes it's hours later, I will pick up the phone and see full bars but they are gray and I'm not getting out.
I'm running Cyanogen 10.0.0-toro and no, I haven't tried a full wipe and reload yet.
thoughts or suggestions?

same thing happened to me on toroplus sourcery 5.1, after trying everything i could think of and talking to one of the devs, i finally did a fresh download of rom and gapps. wiped cache, wiped dalvik, factory reset, wipe system, deleted android folder off of storage then installed the fresh download of rom and gapps and its been working great for me since. hope this helps.

Can you elaborate on this? I've flashed 5 different modems and still get this problem... it happens to my cell service bars, as well. Would love to know what the cause is.

i just know ever since moving to a 4.2.2 kernel that has the 4.2.2 drivers my wifi has been stable. I know there was a post in the anarkia thread with the ak kernel that had the drivers. but i believe most any 4.2.2 kernel would have them implemented. i do have the newest bootloader and radio too. but i know as soon add i got the 4.2.2 drivers all issues were resolved wifi wise. of course i think if you have a 4.2.2 kennel you'll have them.

I'm looking forward to that update - I've been watching the Cyanogen threads for when I think the 10.1 has matured enough to become my daily driver... good to know you've had positive results!
Temporary solution
me facing same issues , Solution would be to use an app called wifi fixer by zanish-g1 from the play store ...
it worked for me !! :good:
