Hi all,
Just installed Android Revolution HD version 7.0.0.0 and now the camera isn't working properly:
When the photo is taken, there is no "confirmation" with the small animation that shows the picture zooming out in the corner.
When you try to watch videos the phone reboots or / video does not appear in the camera folder list.
I tried installing the stock version again, but the camera problems are still there. Could this be because of an edited Camera.apk file? Could it be one of the tweaks in the installation screen? (writeback , etc) ? I also installed again without the tweaks but the problems are still there.
I now installed Android_Revolution_HD-One_X_7.1.0 and the camera seems to work better but when I have low battery neither the camera or the video work, the buttons are disabled and it takes no pictures. Is this a tweak or a bug?
Finally, I think that version 7.0.0.0 changed a setting that affects the whole phone and all other roms that I flash, since even the stock rom is affected now by this camera problem. I 'think' it might be the data_writeback tweak, but now I can't disable it?
Any help very appreciated.

All the issues you mentioned above seems to work perfectly for me. Did you do a full wipe when installing 7.0.0? Has is ever successfully worked on any other rom?

All other versions of ARHD used to work normally, including the camera. Now watching videos freezes the phone or restarts.
I also installed Insert Coin yesterday in case it fixes the tweaks from ARHD but the camera is still not working properly.
Did u do full wipe?
I'm also experiencing this problem. What should I do?
shiningarmor Did u do full wipe?
I did a full wipe yes, before the installation. Not sure if I did one afterwards (when installing the stock rom or ARHD v 6.0.0.0). You think that would reset all the tweaks?

The only thing that fixed the camera file system (saving videos and viewing them and also the crashes) was installing Pro Capture or some other alternate camera app and saving the files with that one, afterwards the default camera started working properly as well.
BTW, I installed Insert Coin 7.0.0.0 and that fixed the camera as well, but try using Pro Capture free also and saving some picture with that one.
SOLVED:
This resets the camera app and all the file saving/video playback becomes normal.
If you had enabled the data_writeback tweak there are chances that the camera will stop saving pictures normally (At least the Data_writeback seems to be the most relevant tweak towards file handling).
In case your camera is stuffed up in ARHD 7.0.0.0, install Insert Coin 7.0.0.0, then do a ARHD Super Wipe and then install ARHD 7.0.0.0 again without any of the tweaks. Now you can also update to ARHD 7.1.0.0 with a working camera.

Hi, I can't seem to connect to my camera after flashing my ROM. I get "Camera Error: Can't connect to the camera". I'm using an N7105
I've tried:
1. CM10.1 and AOKP-JB-mr1-build6 roms. Restoring to the stock ROM made the camera work again, but flashing to the AOSP roms again after that breaks the camera.
2. Tried the NEAK kernel.
3. Tried removing the sdcard.
4. Tried fixing permissions in CWM.
I noticed that this seems to be an issue with AOSP Roms and S3s, but I can't seem to find a fix for the Note II. Is there one?
Thanks in advance!
Try some other kernel....

Any solution to this? I'm experiencing the same phenomenon, nothing seems to remedy it. Flashed different roms, kernels, etc.
Did u guys used touch focus or the camera app wont Just open? The aosp camera works fine but Whenever u use the touch focus while flash is set on : always on: then it will FC.. reboot and try again.. (my experience)
Cheers

Nah, for me it just won't open up at all, in any AOSP ROM i try. Full wipes of system, caches, etc. I don't know what else to try.
App starts, I see controls and black screen, then "Cannot connect to camera"

Exactly the same problem for me. Tried multiple camera apps all with the same effect.
Im aware that this is for the Galaxy S3 but looks like a similar problem and might be worth trying out.

I will give it a go when I get a chance but busy at work today so may not happen any time soon.
I find this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.camerajbplus
to be the best alternative.

Its not about the app. Its about the Camera. No app can connect to the camera because the firmware doesnt exist in the AOSP ROMs, only in the stock ROMs
I think I read that a recent CM nightly made some kind of stride forward in the camera dept. Haven't tested it, as am surprised to find myself happy with the stock ROM (albeit debloated).
from tapatalk (Galaxy Note 2)
Does it have to do with fixing permissions? I had this same error on my T-mobile Note 2 when I tried using an AOSP rom. I tried re-wiping, flashing etc to no avail. I was just getting ready to try an updated version to see if this fixed it.

Ofcourse it does, prior to installing this app the default camera was working just fine with slimbean which is based off of AOSP. Ive only changed my default camera because of the extra options, otherwise default work. Get your facts straight. Also i can connect to the camera just fine using any application including social and media apps..

Okay, so maybe it has been added to that ROM or maybe your camera has a different firmware to mine. For reference my camera firmwares are
REAR CAMERA:
Cam FW Ver: ZMGA01
Phone FW Ver: ZMGA01
FRONT CAMERA:
Cam and Phone FW Ver: S5K6A3
So after a couple of days of research I have managed to solve this problem.
Problem
When using a non-stock rom if you try to open ANY camera application that uses the rear camera you get the message "Can't Connect to camera" and the application force closes.Solution
Flash back to a stock ROM where the camera works and root your device.
Dial *#34971539# in stock dialer.
Check your camera vendor using "Phone/CAM FW Ver Check". For me it was ZMGA01
Install Root Explorer from the Google Store
Use Root Explorer to navigate to /data/cfw/
Copy the SlimISP_xx.bin to your SDCARD where xx = the first two letters of your firmware. For me it was SlimISP_ZM.bin
Flash the ROM you wish to use. I installed CM10.1
Using Root Explorer place the SlimISP_xx.bin into /data/cfw/
Change the permissions on the file to 775 (rwxrwxr-x)
Change the owner to System
Change the group to Media
Launch your camera app of choice
Take photos.
I have submitted my camera firmware file to CM10.1 so hopefully if anyone else has this camera it should start working for you i you flash the latest nightly in a few days.
I would rate this as something that is easy to do yourself, the biggest problem I had was researching it.
Thanks,

I believe on some ROMs the camera firmware is kept somewhere else (Obviously) filename format should be the same though.

Hi,
i have changed rom to cyanogen 10.2 because my original rom not working camera (error connecting to camera). so i tried to reset to defaults with same result. I changed rom to cyanogen 10.2 (it was very good) and i have the same camera problem. I changed with another N7100 camera (in other phone it worked fine ) and it work for 1 day (in the other phone a put the "not working camera" and it worksssss) . So i think tnat is not a camera hardware problem. In cyanogen the dialer pressing test function doesn't work and in "/data/cfw" directory i have 8 files : SlimISP_BH, SlimSP_GD, SlimSP_GH, SlimSP_GK, SlimSP_ZD, SlimSP_ZH,SlimSP_ZK,SlimSP_ZM files. I have to had only one of this (i don't know my original firmware) or the cyanogen generic N7100 rom have all camera firmware to logically work with all N7100 firmware? I think that every specific firmware phone get automatically its file for the firmware they have. But i think that all firmware in the same direcotry can overload the rom information firmware too. I need to return to stock and check with original rom by dealer what firmware i have ? It was an original N7100 tim branded phone (samsung changed already 1 time camera in warrenty time but after 2 months the same error). I don't want to think its a logic board problem because or work or not work. I think its a "stupid" firmware problem.

clear data ...reboot and try again .. that worked for me .. if still not then try to re-calibrate gyro settings from service menu .
Edit: Spoke too soon. After rebooting my phone hours later the camera no longer starts. May or may not be related to what I did below.
Edi2: Well I tried clearing data, removing this new AR Effect, restoring the old one, rebooting dozens of times, did a factory reset. Camera just refused to work. I just spend my morning doing a complete firmware restore and re rooting again. Now this issue could have been unrelated to the steps below, reader beware. In case it matters, I was running a D5503 with 14.2.A.1.144 firmware, rooted, locked bootloader.
------------------------------------------------
I had this issue, where AR effect would only show the light flashes but nothing ever appeared. I resolved this on my device by following these steps.

Everything works perfectly. However, there is one BUT
Follow the instructions
1. Delete (your) old AR Effect in system\app - or save in sdcard.
2. Use CleanMaster https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard&hl=ru from delete [email protected] (remnants of applications)
3. Maybe not to do, but I advise you to do. Use SD Maid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm&hl=ru
Delete lost lib AR effect. Section system or debris.

Basically I uninstalled AR Effect then used a root file browser to delete AR effect from the /system/app folder.
I then got AR Effect from here.

I'm having an issue on my SPH-L710 where the back camera works in all cases, but the front camera is laggy and stutters, and has a skewed / stretched aspect ratio in all applications except the camera app itself. That is, the front camera works as expected, fast and looks normal in the stock camera app or the google camera app, but when it is embedded in another such as facebook, snapchat, etc., it exhibits the problems above.
This is not a problem on ND8 (4.4) stock, but has happened on all the custom roms I have tried in the list below :
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.0-OFFICIAL-5979
Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.2.1-WEEKLY-6080
cm-11-20140814-NIGHTLY-d2lte
cm-11-20140805-SNAPSHOT-M9-d2lte
BeanStalk-4.4.4010-20140722-d2lte
Quantum.4
I do a factory wipe and erase the cache every time. I have tried force closing the camera and gallery apps and clearing their data. None of these solutions have worked. What roms are other people using that don't have this issue? If the issue is this widespread, I would think there would be more posts regarding it.
I just tested the front camera on Facebook and another app. I was not able to replicate the problem and experienced no issues with the front camera preview.
Tested and working on CM11 20140812 Nightly w/ stock kernel and just finished testing with DKP kernel.
It could be hardware related if you are not seeing this as a common issue in forums.

Right. You did mention that detail. Hope another nightly works for you.
Just tested cm-11-20140812-NIGHTLY-d2lte and I am having the same issue. No idea what could be wrong. Are you sure its not skewed in any way on the front camera?
I wiped and installed the nightly and gapps-kk-20140606-signed, went straight to google play, installed messenger, and tested the camera. No funny business, and it doesn't display correctly.

I am 100% sure there is no skewing, distortion, stretching etc. on apps accessing the front camera outside of the stock camera app.
The only difference between our setup is that I use this GAPPs package:
pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed
I also use the DKP kernel, as I mentioned before. But, as I also reported, stock kernel worked fine for me, too.
No luck even with GAPPS pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed with and without the DKP kernel dkp-aosp44-d2-20140726.

I was reading around a bit more on the Internet. Have you tried going into the Google Camera app settings when you launch the camera from one of the apps in questions and changing the resolution? I read on a few sites that this might fix the stretch issue. I'll keep digging around.
I don't suspect that it's a code issue, since mine is working normally. Do you have more than one camera app installed that is possibly tweaking the resolution? Just a thought.
I have tried to change the picture size from 1:1 to 4:3 of the front facing camera in the camera app, as well as change the resolution from 1.9 to 1.3, but neither change is reflected in the facebook messenger camera. I also tried using no GAPPS and installing the facebook messenger APK only after a fresh install, and still have the problem, so it's not a separate app causing the issue. Are you sure you're using a SPH-L710?
I'm assuming the problem is in whatever base all these custom roms are built on, but since it's working for you, I have no idea.
For the record, I am installing CM11 with recovery CWM-6045_touch_d2spr_naddict and the other roms philz_touch_6.48.4-d2lte only because CM11 wont install with philz due to assert failures.

Yes. I have a SPH-L710. I encourage you to ensure that you are using the correct and most current version of Philz recovery for our device, as I am able to successfully install CM11 using Philz.
Please download and try the latest Philz recovery here, and try wiping and reflashing the ROM and GAPPs.

All you did there was delete and rename a camera library, which are stored in the kernel, and that I perceive to be the reason the camera broke.
Are you savvy on ADB?
I think at this point the best thing for your to do would be to:
Flash ROM Slim-d2lte-4.4.4.build.7.2.1-WEEKLY-6080
Flash GAPPS pa_gapps-stock-4.4.4-20140629-signed
Get everything back up to a freshly flashed ROM with GAPPs, then:
1. Enable Developer Options
2. In Developer Options, enable USB debugging
3. Connect phone to USB port on PC
4. Launch ADB
5. Input command: adb devices (to ensure the device has been detected by adb)
6. Input command: adb logcat
7. Launch and switch to front camera in 3rd-party app
8. Disconnect USB cable
9. Copy and paste text from ADB terminal into a Notepad document. Save document (e.g. logcat.txt).
10. Upload Notepad document as attachment (.txt file) to this thread on XDA.
Yes, well by deleting the one camera library and replacing it with the camera.vendor, everything works exactly as it should in the 3rd party application. Its just when using the stock camera app where it doesnt work now - essentially making the opposite situation I started with. FYI with the fix the stock camera looks fine and can take a picture but usually closes and forces a reboot right away.
Here is the logcat for opening messenger, opening the camera option and snapping a (stretched) picture.
It seems I've been summoned.
I didn't see a whole lot in the logcat (or rather, the camera spews so much debug info that nothing stood out). So far, I'm able to reproduce the stretched preview thing but not the lag. I think the lag probably depends on the app, so I'll try a few more.
I think I know what's causing the stretching, but I won't know for sure until I get a ROM built.
EDIT: My changes didn't help any.

Thank you tremendously for trying!
Any idea why it would only be affecting his phone in other apps?
Guessing there's no solution to this until someone in the CM main trunk figures it out.
I haven't seen this issue in a thread that has been discussed before and I would like to know if it only affects me or others as well. Most of the time my camera works just fine but sometimes when I take a shot the focus square window will stay on the screen with the picture and everything will freeze up until I turn the screen on and off and then to use the camera I have to restart my phone completely. I have tried other FTFs and factory resets but nothing seems to cure it up. Seems on the 757 it did not do this but started with the 108. Also happened on the v2 russian firmware for the 108.
I haven't tried any custom roms other than Slimkat and on that ROM it worked fine but wasn't anywhere near factory firmware. Everything worked on that ROM other than the 2 stage focus and shoot button. If anyone knows how I can fix this issue I will try anything because alot of the time I miss once in a lifetime shots because of this.
Thanks,
Scott
Install this APK, I have downloaded it from another thread here on XDA.
This will add an icon in your launcher that will fix the freezing camera app, however you have to manually start after a reboot or a ram clean.
Enjoy.

Yesterday, I opened up the camera app and tried to record only to find it with the error, Warning: Recording Failed, then the app shuts down.
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 and I have used pimp my rom to edit camera quality, but I believe my camera was working after that. I hadn't backed up original pimo my rom settings before config so nothing can be done there.
I have tried the following things:
Cleared cache and data, reboot
Cleared cache and data, wiped cache partition
Installed other camera apps (They showed similar errors)
Factory reset
Plain reboot
Edit camera settings (resolution lowered, quality lowered)
The only thing left to do would be update to the latest firmware, but my rooted tablet doesn't allow it, so I would need to do it manually.
Is there a way to fix this problem? I have looked for answers to not prevail.

lets see here... you rooted your phone, then pimped it out to peeps to make money when they need a camera?
The hardware is not gonna get any better by tweaking something in android. 720p is as best as you will get.
I bet your SD card is corrupt try refomating to allow camera to save to SD.

Nope, didn't work.
Formatted SD card
Tried with every single setting on the camera.
Nothing works.
I'll try taking out the battery and sd card and putting em back in like I saw on a similar thread, but it's proabably not gonna work.
