I'm wondering how many people have been persuaded to buy HTC One phones because of this marketing gimmick. I say this because in the same token I was almost turned off from buying my One V just because of the Beats branding.
Many consumers don't know that Beats is just a simple EQ option that jacks the bass way up. It makes me laugh when HTC toutes this as ".. Listening to music as the artists intended ". What's even worse though is that with a statement like that still many HTC One phones suffer from an unacceptable level of audible digital noise when listening to music.
Even when disregarding the EQ software and questionable audio isolation of the phone when you concentrate on Beats branded headphones a person might think that would be where a reasonable quality of sound might be expected.. Still this isn't so with the Beats branding being universally lauded by the audiophile and music connoisseur as being notoriously bad for true reproduction of sound. Take a look at the frequency graph for any Beats headphone and it's hard to disagree.
I just wish HTC would drop the Beats branding and stop deceiving customers or atleast try and make a genuine attempt at making a decent headphone.
What are your thoughts as an educated developer community on Beats branding?

first, the earphones that come with One V are not Beats and are pretty good.
second, i agree that beats is jus an eq setting but if you really think that it just cranks up the base real high and nothing else then you clearly haven't had enough time to explore the options
and three if you really hate the phone that much then why did you buy it mate?
I'll give you the answer to that, not because of the beats branding but because of HTC's build quality and for the fact that even with so many people giving you negative comments about it, the phone in itself is actually good.
xLoud sucks
xLoud is simply 'nothing' on my Xperia Mini

I'm not saying HTC makes bad handsets, although the audio quality does have a lot to be desired. To say that the audio on my phone is as the artists intend it to be is simply laughable.
And sure, the Beats EQ also pumps up mids and highs, but still it's just distorting the original waveform of your music even more but completely without disclosing which frequency bands it's jacking up or down.
I just don't like Beats branding being part of my phone... it makes it... dirty.

I have tried Beats with about 4 different headsets so far and lemme tell you, other than increasing the volume and maybe jacking up the bass a teensy bit, beats doesn't do squat.
Complete fail on HTC's part of promising authentic audio.
Don't get me wrong ,I love this phone but Beats is just simply misleading.
Although it's true that the Beats brand is completely overhyped and consists of little more than an EQ bass boost (and perhaps a fashion statement), I feel like there is a certain guarantee of audio quality with it present. Many phones (perhaps even most) without any audio branding whatsoever have absolutely horrific audio processors and suffer from terrible quality sound.
That's not to say that all Beats devices have fantastic audio, but I've never read a convincing review completely slating the sound quality on a branded device like this. Certainly for the moment I've been quite happy with the One V's audio performance - it can drive my 88 ohm DT770s fairly well, which is more than I can say for a lot of consumer devices out there.
I guess it's a little sad that manufacturers have to rely on a label like this though, ultimately it's probably because most consumers care more about how fashionable a phone is.
Since HTC has now bought Beats
We can now expect "authentic sound", on every piece it releases over the next few years....
Lucky us.
I thought that the V didn't have beats just S and all X brands

Sound quality is far more superior at least compared to my other phones in the past, but I agree, that beats doesn't provide that much plus for it.
I agree with you on that. Soumd quality on my one v is even better than my ipod 4g. Just moved all my music to my phone and now just gonna use my ipod for playing FPS's. I
Yeah on mine all beats does is increase the low-mid sound channel and increase treble to make sound louder but in some music especially rock, it ends up sounding really scratchy and disgusting. I just use dsp manager

I wonder if HP buying beats will mitigate that price some. If I'm not mistaken they were owned by Monster and you know how they do.

the beats are overpriced and a waste of money
guess the phone will be too, if they need to pay royalties
I have a Touchpad with beats audio and while good it isn't going to be worth an extra $100 bucks for me on a phone. I'll wait to see the price before getting excited. If it's priced well though I'll probably get it.
Does anybody know what this Beats label means? A pair of overpriced headphones or a decent audio codec?
I have a suspicion that this is a hoax.

It supposedly includes a special audio processing chip - but that may have been mis-information.
Based on a video preview that Engadget did, most of the change was cosmetic, and then they included some decent Beats branded headphones that the handset recognizes and outputs audio tuned for those specific buds. The phone will also recognize one other pair of Beats headphones (don't recall which model).
I was hoping that they would have improved the speakers on the devices to sound better.

That "detecting Beats headphones and adjusting sound" part is obviously marketing BS.
What I think is really going to happen is this: they'll add a special DSP mode with bass boost for some headphones, put the red logo on the phones, add those headphones, add $150 to the price. Maybe (just maybe) those branded handsets will get 32GB storage, so you'll have to pay all this extra money to get decent storage size.
Its chips, speaker, and headphones.
Beats is Beats Audio. Not owned by HP, just a deal with Beats.
To the few of you who are wondering how good the "Beats built-in speakers" on the phone are, ask yourself this question.
The speakers are so small. What can you expect?
IMO, it's just a marketing gimmick to attract people who want to show off.

The speakers on the phone (for example the Sensation XE) are really small and don't deliver good sound.
But then again who would expect a good quality for music playback through the phone speakers? You just don't use your phone speakers for music playback.
There are no "Beats built-in speakers" on the phone. The Sensation speakers are identical to the Sensation XE speakers because of that very reason.
There are only improvements when you use the phone with the beats speakers (those in the box or others).
I was incorrect. It's actually HTC that bought majority stake in the company. I was thinking of HP because of their use of Beats on PC. My statement still stands though. In fact, HTC owning it increases the chance of it not being overpriced.

I thought the speaker and srs/dolby processing was a gimmick. The only reason I got it over the Focus is b/c Best Buy was giving them away and it was a placeholder until the DVP came to AT&T. There ended up being a very noticeable difference in audio through the speaker, connected to aux, or connected to external speakers.

really??
So, gimmick or no gimmick? The question still haunts us despite the fact that we've now tried out Beats on the XE with a range of different tracks and even though we generally enjoyed the whole experience. But let's start with the negatives: To our ears, enabling Beats primarily boosted all-round volume. Our cynical minds suggest that this is quite deliberate: if only the bass was lifted, then everyone would dismiss the Beats profile is just an over-hyped equivalent of the Super Bass button on your old-school Aiwa personal stereo.

ok fair enough
And here's the good news: quite aside from the issue of sound profiles, the headphones which come with the XE are fantastic. HTC will make sure that 'iBeats' gets replaced with 'YourBeats' on the final packaging, but aside from that they're identical to Dre's single-driver in-ears that retail for around $100. We're not sure how they'd stack up against say, Sony's new XBA-1 balanced armature 'phones that might well have a similar price tag when they arrive stateside, but they'll nevertheless slaughter more budget sets.

Have you actually listend to beats by dre headphones on the sensation XE?
I don't think so, so you cannot judge whether engadget is right or wrong.
Beats by dre might not be the best headphones out there, there are more advances products for over 1000USD.
However, they aren't bad either and for their price range the beats by dre are solid products.
I haven't listed to beats on the Sensatoin XE yet but I have used Beats by Dre Solo HD on an iPod and that money is well spent if you want audio quality.
This is why I assume that the HTC Beats devices will at least have some improvements over their non-Beats counterparts, but then again I have also not listend to it and all we can do is wait and judge when we actually get them, although I won't buy an android device.
As fast as HTC phone prices drop and as often as they go on sale even if this launches at $250-$300 it will be able to be had for much less.

For people who have the phone, does the beats enhancer work and does it make the sound different without using the enhancer.

Yes the Beats Audio enchancer really makes the sound "richer". Beats become louder and the voices crisper. I'd say it really makes a difference especially if you have some high quality headset (Sennheiser, etc).

Don't have the beats ears, so I can't really help you on that one.
Althou considering HTC has 51 % stock in BeatsbyDre I'm pretty sure every button works fine with HTC . (Can't confirm it thou)
I use the Beats by Dr. Dre Studios with my phone.
I must say, when I play music with the HTC Music Player, it quite sucks.
I mean, it sounds pretty well, but I miss the bass.
So I've been using PowerAMP.
Great music player, and it has a bass button, which makes the bass awesome.
Sadly the HTC One X can't handle that very easily, because when I have the bass pretty high, and the volume pretty high too, it starts pushing away the high tones with kicks (Like in hardstyle music).
I didn't had this problem with my HD2.
I also had this problem a little bit with the Samsung Galaxy Note, and had it very much with the HTC ChaCha.
It could be a hardware problem, the quality of the sound module/soundcard (Or how is it called?)
But yea, in my conclusion...
It's all about personal opinions.
The HTC Music Player does not give me the bass I really want to hear from my Beats Studios.
I got my one x from Vodafone and it came with ur beats headphones I must say the sound quality is very nice crisp and clear
I don't no why people would use anything else to play music for me the beats audio is so nice to listen to I wouldn't use anything else.

Audio is all down to personal preference, I personally don't like the sound from beats headphones compared to my shure 535's. I done a test today, same song on the one x, my Sony Walkman and the wife's iPod, all set to the best sound I could get out of them at the same volume. The Sony Walkman was by far the best, much more bass than the other 2, very little difference between 2ND and 3rd but one x just wins.
Saying that I love the one x thoroughly!

Beats Audio is not a panacea for sound quality. All it does is essentially bass the boost and volume a bit. As a result, mids and highs suffer from the 'enhancement.' Just because its from the 'Beats' brand doesn't mean it has to boost sound quality. Beats headphones in general aren't exactly spectacular, and are insanely overpriced for what they offer as it is.
Its more of a marketing gimmick which equates to little more than a preset equalizer.
Many audiophiles prefer to disable the 'sound enhancements' these vendors provide, so that they can listen to their music as it should sound originally, or with their own equalizer tweaks.
So no, 'listening to beats audio' isn't the whole point of listening to music.

I don't know what's in the HOX but it pretty much sucks balls. You can even hear a *poof* when the music starts and a few seconds after it stops, not to mention the crappy sound itself.
@Gibeon - you must have a faulty phone as I don't get any of that
OP - Really is very reliant on the quality of your audio files I find, poor quality mp3's will sound TERRIBLE, worse than on some other phones. If it's high quality FLAC rips then the sound quality is really very good for a phone, better than the Desire I used to have for example and miles better than the iPod I used to have.
I have Denon in ear for going out and about with and a couple of quite high end (full size over ear) headphones and good quality files sound really good through them. The one thing I would say is that the output volume is not as high as some other phones I have tried, so you do need quite sensitive headphones if you like your music loud.
No idea what the DAC is but for me it's a great portable music player. No such thing as audiophile in any phone but it's definitely one of the better ones i have tried.

Really? I've heard several cases of this behavior so I guessed it a widespread problem.
GSMarena has put the real specs to the test, here they are.
I also find the OneX sound much worse than on the desire. Beats only changes it from tinny to plasticky. It is so much worse, actually (both on stock earphones and via car stereo) that I no longer enjoy listening to music from the phone in my car, the sound gets on my nerves.
Instead of shelling out gazillions for having the name of a makebelieve gangster on their stuff, htc could have bought millions of decent audio chips and still give them a catchy name That would be the htc spirit I always liked.

This is due to the player you're using. I swear by neutron. The ui might be a bit overwhelming for non audiophiles, but I'm getting some great sound with this app and beats disabled.
After some time with this phone, I'm finding the hox's sound to be quite different, but not necessarily of lesser quality compared to my old sgs1 with voodoo.
My advice would be to just change your music app and if you don't like neutron as I proposed, you could go with power amp or player pro with dsp pack.
On a final note, make sure you get your hands on a decent pair of headphones before commenting on the quality of a Dac. You can't really make any assumptions about these kinds of things if your basing your experience on a free or a $30 pair of ear buds.

The sound is not the best in the world but its much much better then Galaxy S with voodoo sound while playing at the highest volume, at highest its just awesome stable with this beatsaudio thingy tested using Sennheiser HD 555, mind you galaxy S3 has a cheaper version of op amp used in S1.
The HTC One X have the very best sound in every angle: microphone/speaker/headphones/ear speaker
The volume and quality through the headset is good, unfortunately the loudspeaker is rather poor and doesn't go very loud. Typical HTC though, their speaker components tend to be rather low quality.
LG tend to have alright speakers (The Optimus 2X went fairly loud), but I can't say whether the 4X's will be any good or not
EDIT: I realise you were specifically asking about the quality rather than the volume. The quality is pretty good, you wont be disappointed by it. The Galaxy S III supposedly has fantastic audio quality though, which is likely to be better than the One X's due to the fact that the One X uses 'Beats' (which sucks) and the SIII has a Wolfson Micro WM1811 which is apparently pretty awesome (http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/audio_hubs/WM1811/).

If your guys phones are rooted, flash the latest dspequalizer on this phone. Helps tremendously with sound quality. I agree with the person talking about flac files. You don't even need to have flac, just try to get high bitrate mp3s. I listen with Beyerdynamic headphones which take more power to drive, but it's enough for me and sounds great.

Of course the dac is not the best. The point I was trying to make is that I was able to eliminate most of the hissing and strange pops upon volume changes etc by switching to the neutron player leading me to be believe that these are not necessarily related to the Dac itself.

Well i dont know what you expect, in my eyes it is good enough (i dont listen to music over it) ... and BTW, i use well ripped mp3s because over the beats headset you can hear every single detail in songs ... youtube is also great ...
I dont know, but probably i have a special OneX i dont have any single issue the guys so far had reported ... i am just confused now why i dont get a S-OFF device
As far as I know, the beats audio plugin is only a peace of software, isn't it? It has nothing to do with special hardware, its just an equalizer setting. But I'm confused some sites say, the one x's audio chip is the same, that is build in the one s, but the explanation of the Tegra 3 chipset says, that it is able to handle 7.1 surround sound, which means it includes an audio chip. I think I have to wait for reviews of the optimus 4x to solve this problem

they dont listen to music a lot and i do EVERY day so my question is is the beats audio as good as everyone raves on about?
and do you reckon thats a fair swap
I suggest watching this first, but what makes the HTC One better isn't beats but the actual speakers on the phone.

It's true. I don't listen to music a ton either anymore, but when I do, I prefer the sound of it over anything else

Yeah I've looked on YouTube but it's not really a good comparison. Only thing that puts me off is the camera
I don't have a comparison of the S4 to the one, but I did just upgrade from S3 to the One about a week ago and I do think the sound from the One's speakers is a whole lot better than any other phone I've owned or heard. I don't like beats audio though. I actually turned it off because it seemed to bring too much bass through and distorts the sound quite a bit. With beats turned off the phone sounds very very good, imo, and sounds amazing for a phone. Another note is I haven't listened to any music with headphones, only with the phone's speakers, so I don't know how beats would sound using headphones.
Hope that helps.

I listen to the HTC One a lot with headphones and I keep the beats audio off. I have noticed with the beats audio ON there is a hiss in the background that takes away from the music a bit. For just the speakers, the beats audio on or off both sound really good. Hope this helped!
@Khixar27 It is done
I traded my S4 for an HTC One about 3 months ago. No regrets. Haven't looked back once.

I usually leave it on when I'm listening to music or audio of any kind through the speakers. Haven't done much headphone testing but I don't remember being excited about BeatsAudio through headphones.
It's nothing more than an overhyped equalizer setting. This guy explains it pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdbn_pmxFic
The thing is, when you turn it off, it doesn't actually turn off. It adjusts the equalizer in the opposite direction instead, so you get artificially degraded sound. A pretty sneaky way to make you think Beats makes your music sound better.
This is what I have told people for years about beats. There's nothing special about it that its just an eq setting which you can recreate with any DSP type app we have seen out for a while and quite honestly make it sound better. Beats is for (I hate to say it) for lazy people that doesn't want to take the time to setup an eq setting.

Check out this review , htc one is the best audio device on the market.

"This is the second smartphone in a row where HTC makes the Beats audio logo stand for something other than a simple equalizer.."
And i've tested several phones personally such as xperia z , s4 , apple 5s , htc one in my car. (bang & olufsen sound system) - incredible quality.
While on my friend's stock honda sounds horrible , so it depends on a quality of you stereo or headphones.

This is true but using other DSP apps while running aosp ROMs on this phone have gotten better sounds than what beats could produce. Beats is just a general eq setting no more no less. Most likely they did a study on the eq settings and this setting that's in the phone now is what the general population agreed on. Me myself can enjoy beats setting but there are times I like to fine tune it more.

I use the power amp on my HTC and used it on my galaxy s, 10 band equalizer appears to sound good.
It definitely sounds better on the One with Beats enabled, but the external speaker volume takes a pretty big hit with Beats on. I usually end up leaving it on for music, but turn it off whenever I'm watching a video. I think just as good or better sound with better volume can be achieved with DSP or Power Amp.

BEATS
They are over rated. With the auto adjustment part it makes the music sound weird like its fading in and out. thats the most annoying part. so i leave beats off.
As said before it's nothing but an equalizer. It does sound great under most conditions but it's nothing that should make or break your decision on getting the phone as just about any audio app(and other custom ROMs) can do the same.
I probably wouldn't consider myself a picky audiophile by any means but I think the stereo speakers on the One are most of the difference I hear. My audio app is Poweramp which has a really nice EQ built in. I prefer to tweak that over enabling Beats. Beats sounds over processed to me. Even running AOKP, the first time I had a notification while I held the phone had me startled with the clarity and volume of the sound... and that was without Beats obviously.
Beats just sounds like a bass boost to me. Which I'm okay with or without.
