As I've just recently dipped my toe in the water and rooted my Wildfire S and installed Cyanogenmod I must say how useful this forum has been.
Thanks to all of you have shared your knowledge so generously!

Hello proud SGS-owners!
(Beware, wall-of-text)
I've been lurking around the xda forums since I got my first Android phone (Hero). Now that I've gotten myself an SGS I've "moved" from the Hero forums to the SGS forums. My first impression was that the SGS forum community is far behind that of the Hero community, which is understandable considering that SGS is a much newer phone and doesn't have as many users (yet).
I never felt that I had anything to contribute to the Hero community because it was already flourishing when I came there. I'd like to help the SGS community to move forward and reach that same level, and hopefully beyond. The SGS have the potential to be the real (iPhone?!) kick-ass phone we've all been waiting for, so why not have a kick-ass community?
It took me hours, scouring the threads, to learn how to safely flash and root my phone, but it was well worth it. The problem is, most people don't have the same patience or time to do so. So, for starters. How about we combine our shared knowledge and put up a post that will hold all the necessary info on all current FWs, basic info on how you flash, root, what odin is, how-to's and not-to-do's, and so forth.
All of this can and should also be put in the wiki, but I believe we also need a thread for it here or many people will miss out on the info. Perhaps something in between, the best of two worlds? Right now the SGS wiki is really lacking...
Any ideas or opinions? I'm all ears and open for discussion
To the mods: You can move this thread to general if you think it's out of context. However, this is first and foremost targeted at the dev-community so I think it should be left here.
Best regards,
Marcus

Great idea to collect as many information as possible. But there's a already a thread for this: the big faq thread.
I like your intiative though. And yes, it would be very nice to have an updated wiki.
BTW, for the general section it would be nice to have a sticky tips and tricks thread, like the one tboy2000 created for the HTC HD2. We need someone though that will maintain that post.

Shame on me. How on earth did I miss that thread?!
Do you know if you can you let other people edit the original post in some way? That would help alot

I surely does ... But i don't believe it can be done.
BTW that would be a nice tip for XDA-dev forum developers: create an option to let multiple (selected?) users colaborate and edit one opening post. But then again, that would be almost be the same functionality as a wiki
I agree with the op, the faq thread is good but this forum could really use a 'getting started' thread for people that just got their phone. And it should be in the general forum instead of development.
I come from a very busy Blade community at Modaco where questions are answered on minutes. I was surprised to ask a question here last night and for it to still be unanswered.
Now is there another hangout where all the Defy actions at? Or should I just get used to the slower pace? Thanks guys.

There's a fair bit going on in the Defy Themes & Apps forum & also the Defy Dev forum.
It's still a fairly new device - maybe what 6 months or so but it does seem to be taking off now.
I used to browse the Defy forum on Modaco & just been on after a few weeks break from it but it's still dead on there - only a handful of threads this month.
I know a very active german forum regarding the defy...
But i don't think it will be of much help to you unless you speak german...

Also that most developers have got fed up with dumb questions here on xda and have decided not to post their roms in here.

Dumb questions get asked everywhere...the larger the Blade community got the worse the questions got. But you have to just ignore the idiots.
Just like for gaming: everyone was a newbie at some point... so no need for name calling here.
If you don't like the question; ignore it, don't read or don't reply to it ...
I'd rather see more "idiotic" threads than no thread at all...wasn't the topic here anyway...?
In a perfect world (read forum), every 'dumb' question would be answered with a simple thread search. But unfortunately, that doesn't always happen here.
I still have some un-answered stuff about my Moto Defy and I'm very thankful to anyone posting replies to my questions.
'Maybe' that with an increasing Defy users community here will come a better job from moderators at deleting out-of-place noobs' AND old-timmers' questions/comments in threads...
Long live this forum and long live the noobs !
I have come from the blade community also and ill be honest i dare not do owt to my defy LOL
I have tried to post in other areas of the Defy forums but i got told i was a noob and therefore not allowed to post

That's appalling. Well i'll be messing with mine as soon as i get it tomorrow and i will also be looking to port some themes over to it too. For the blade i ported and maintained 16 themes for 3 different roms.
If you have any questions once i've dived in i will help as much as possible!
Hello everyone, Ive had my desire since the beginning of Feb this year, just wanted to drop in and say hello instead of just lurking and "stealing" info!
Been using this site to guide me through rooting and flashing custom roms (GV 2.5 at the moment) Keep up the good work folks, anyone reading this and using the site for the same ends as myself, stick with it. The site is top notch for finding out all about Android.
Over Android-out.
** EDIT: oops, just realised Ive posted this in the Q section and not the General... sorry folks.
This forum lives from getting help and then helping others with these information you got. There is no "stealing". So far my opinion, based on experience.
True! Just meant using the info and not getting round to thanking for it! Have been trying to spread the rooting word amongst my friends though!
Hi, all. I am visiting XDA forums for many months but i havent posted very much because every time i have found what i needed in other threads and posts. But now i want to take over the Desire Index in Dev Section over from 'fflash' as he wants someone to take over. I will gladly do that and promise to keep my fellow desire owners updated.
But as i dont have enough posts yet, and thanks to meet the criteria set by fflash, please help me out so that i can help you in return. Thanks
Hello everyone, I've been lurking the pages of XDA for a couple of years now.
There is soo much information, guides and hacks for my beloved Desire HD and Nexus 7 but no dedicated thread for the Desire C.
Yes I know it is a cheap, budget phone, but thanks to einstein.frat who has made the amazing Nameless ROM we have finally got something to work with.
Is it possible for any mods here to help create a dedicated space for the Desire C?
Who knows, we might even manage to get S-Off on this device
Thanks everyone!
Welcome aboard Zibbsy!
Please post in the thread below to request new device forums.
