I have searched and searched, sorry if this question is a dupe.
I have ICS on my Kindle Fire, months ago it was not possible to mount USB storage.
Is this still true?
I plug in my cable to the Windows 7 Machine, I hear the beep that the computer recognizes the Fire, but I never get an option to mount USB storage on the Fire.
How can I make this work?
Cheers!
Tony
Most the new roms have mass storage sorted go to storage in the upper right there are three dots select it select mass storage or mtp under usb computer connection
Or just boot into Recovery and Mount USB Storage from there...you could have always done that
options
You have a few different options that you can try.
Option one as stated above, you can boot to recovery, and then mount that way. But its a pain, or was for me.
Option two, you can try what iscander.drake suggested in his post in the development section. Which worked for me, however its to be noted that you have to turn usb debugging off in your settings, or it wont work. Link to his post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27648281&postcount=133
Option three, if all else fails try using airdroid, works quite well. there are a few other programs mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661791
Hope some of that helps.
Wow Thanks guys, I love the KF forums, you guys are so helpful!!!
ICS really hides that USB mounting setting. Again, Thanks!

For some reason, my phone will not give me the option to mount my SD card as a disk drive all of a sudden...
I'm using CM 7.0.2.1 with Tiamat 3.3.8 as my kernel. Anyone know how I might be able to fix it?? I'm trying to put KingdomRom on it but can't because I can't mount .
I've also tried a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM with a different kernel...and I'm still not getting anything. I've tried multiple USB cords as well.
I would try unmounting your SD card in Settings then reboot the phone.
Didn't work . I thought originally it might have something to do with the kernel, but I've changed to a different one and it still isn't working.
When you connect your phone to the computer, does the charging light come on? What happens when you tap the notification that says your phone is connected to the computer? Do you get the screen with the option to mount and it doesn't, or do you not get the notification at all?
Have you tried using something like Widgetsoid to toggle usb mount? I had a similar problem on Sense and using a widget to toggle mounting the phone as disk drive was the only way I could get it to work.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Also, what recovery are you using?
Sent from my sometimes infected,MIUI,Kings UNleashed Ultra Supersonic EVO...
Using ClockworkMod. I just stupidly reformatted my SD card after reflashing my ROM, so now once I am able to redownload GApps, I'm gonna download one of the widgets (might try AutoSync, too) and see if I can make progress in the morning.
Update: Got Market back on, downloaded Widgetsoid, enabled USB Mount...and still nothing. I've tried on 2 computers now with different USB cables and nothing.
Is it saying that your phone is connected to your PC at all? It could be your USB port, or your cable is going bad. Try plugging it in to the computer and jiggling the plug near the phone's usb port and see if it tries to connect. If it does, you may have to move it around until you get it to connect and then be very careful not to move anything while transferring files. Also if you have wifi you can transfer files by using an app from the market called wifi file explorer. They have a free and a paid version. Does you phone connect when you mount it to the computer in recovery mode? Does the charging light come on when you plug it in to your computer? Really more info is needed to diagnose your problem. There are also widgets in the market that will allow you to mount the phones storage without unmounting the card from the phone. Maybe this will work for you. Maybe the card is going bad? Who knows, but hopefully some of my suggestions help. If all else fails, you could always do it the old fashioned way and power the phone off, take the card out and plug it directly into your computer via the adapter if needed.
Yes, I do receive a charge light when I plug it into the computers USB. Android just does not provide the option to mount as a disk drive.
I like the Wifi File Explorer Idea. It sounds like a good alternative. Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions!
It was working fine yesterday, but today in MIUI (same as yesterday), I can tell the phone to mount the SD card but it doesn't show up on my computer. So the phone says it's mounted, but it apparently isn't.
To make sure it wasn't a problem with the ROM, I rebooted into to CWM and mounted there, same thing. CWM says it's mounted but it doesn't show up on my computer.
I can view and edit the files on the SD card through ES File Explorer, but the SD card no longer appears on my computer?
It's not the USB port, I plugged in a flash drive and it worked. And I'm using the stock HTC Cable.
This is on my Inspire.
I'm inclined to say it's the wire, but nothing happened to the wire between today and yesterday. It was just sitting on the floor, and it still charges the device.
I did reboot my computer and phone...still no luck.
Does USB debugging have anything to do with it? I've been rooted for months and I never disabled and it didn't cause problems :/
Out of the two inspires in my household, one of my cables stopped working only a month after I bought it. It still works for charging but does not work for data. Have you tried a different cable just to be sure.
It might not be the phone nor the Rom since you've done some basic trouble shooting. It could possibly be your PC. Have you tried it on another computer? Possible driver problems or drive letter conflict might cause it not to display in Computer.
You can check whether Windows has detected your device by going to Start > Devices and Printers, it will pop up there if it is detected. Otherwise you can also check Disk Management. To do this just right-click on Computer > Manage > Disk Management. If you see the removable disk and sure that it is your SD card then it might be a driver letter conflict which you can easily fix by right-clicking on the removable disk and clicking "Change Driver Letter and Paths" and changing it to an unused driver letter. I've had similar issues with USB drives in the past. Hope this helps!
Cheers
Hi guys, I am having a problem with my HTC WFS a510c, I am trying to follow this guide here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399872) to s-off the phone, but I am unable to get the phone to connect in "disk drive" mode. I have the drivers installed, the computer recognizes the phone and shows the drive in explorer but does not show up in the gold card creator. Or when trying to open it from explorer it says "please insert a disk". The last time I connected through the usb cable this worked fine i was able to move pictures and music back and forth, but as soon as I went to try this it wont work. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thank you guys in advance.
Did you select mass storage in the menu that comes after connecting the usb??? And BTW you need to use a Card reader to create a goldcard.

I did pick that option on the phone when it asked, ive had it working in the past.
Thank you for the advice on Gold Card Creator, I was just confused in the guide it said to plug the phone in and pick mass storage mode. Will try using my card reader thank you again.
Thank you for the tip about using a card reader, I am now S-off and Rooted, thanks again.
The only problem I am having is my phone is still not functioning as a USB storage device
could be a hardware problem on the phone......try another usb cable.....it might be that your usb cable is malfunctioning

Ill give that a shot, and hopefully that will solve it. It's just been an odd problem because the computer recognizes the phone and installs drivers and everything just now joy with storage mode.
my storage mode stopped working after i installed link2sd and made an ext2 partition. wifes still works with 2 FAT32 partitions using the same cable.
Mine stopped working before I did link2sd or data2sd, not sure what caused it, just ordered a new cable today and sd card, to see if that helps it.

i've reached a solution but its retarded and time wasting which is restarting the phone (and sometimes the pc) which also tell me that its not a usb cable problem...

I cant seem to find an option to use the Galaxy S4 as USB mass storage, only media device (MTP) or Camera (PTP) is available. Cannot find any USB options in the settings either.
How am I able to copy files from and to my SD card and/or phone HD?

with MTP my device doesnt show up in Mac, as well as my Sony TV or LG receiver. what to do?
Is there anyway to disable MTP and go back to mass storage? Also, is the SDCARD MTP as well?
Mass Storage is gone for good... and while it sounds bad, there's a good reason..
Using Mass Storage forces the storage partition (or external sdcard) to be unmounted by Android, so any data/apps/widgets on there are no longer available until you disconnect your device from your PC. Using MTP allows the data partition to remain mounted and available concurrently on both your device, and on your PC via USB.
1) No, you cannot get UMS back.
2) This belongs in Q&A.
3) For Macs, you will need this.

"there's a good reason" is somewhat subjective. To me the great benefit to the more general usb mass storage option is so you can connect the phone to any device as if it were a usb flash drive. No driver issues, no worries about camera or MTP mode, no Mac issues, no linux issues, no Windows issues ... it's just a usd flash drive and can be treated as such. I am ok with the side affect of auto-unmounting the sdcard from Android when I connect the phone to another device to use as noted USB drive.
Is there in fact any way this will ever come back?

There was an app someone made for the GS3 that did some filesystem trickery to expose the storage as UMS (needed root). I'm sure something like that will come around that works on the GS4 too.
I had the same issue until I installed Kies, no issues after that

How could anyone possibly know if it will come back, especially "in fact?" My guess is you would have to ask Samsung that question to get anything other than a guess or an opinion (which would be NO) but it's not "in fact" just "in an opinion."
I jumped from an S2 to the S4 and was also annoyed that USB mass storage wouldn't work either. Since I use Linux as my desktop, MTP is not an option "out-of-the-box". I therefor turned to an awesome app (that I heard about on this site!), Airdroid. Now I was able to quickly get an album/picture/book datastore onto a shiny new 32GB microSD! And yes, I know I could have put the microSD into a slot on my laptop, etc., but I shouldn't have to, just because I choose to use Linux!
I mean, its rather ironic not to be able to use Linux to connect to Linux (android), don't you think? If I'm completely wrong about this, please someone point me to the right path.
Thanks
There is a "hack" to allow the external to be read as UMS. Also, the internal sdcard is no longer yaffs2 its ext4 and only linux knows ext4. So if you were to use UMS, only a linux computer would "see" the sd card and nothing else.

elesbb,
That's awesome news! Thanks for the tip. I use opensuse (currently 12.3) with kde, will definitely make the necessary tweaks to get this going in dolphin.
Thanks again!
Ignore. Posted in wrong thread.
If you are rooted and busybox installed yes there are lot of apps on play store that can convert your externel SD Card to Mass storage.
Anybody have USB mass storage working? How about MTP? For the life of me can't find the answers. Tried the app on the play store 'SG USB MAS STORAGE ENABLER' but it only shows the sdcard as a CD drive and can't write to it.
Please help

Assuming that you are trying to connect to a computer,
USB Mass Storage does not work.
MTP Works, if you are not seeing your device after connecting to computer , then might need to install required drivers, or install samsung kies and that should install the drivers for you...
I have a SanDisk 64G XC micro SD card. Writes and reads no problem
Also USB (female) to micro OTB cable that allows me to use my 128 GB thumb drive, but not all of them.

Yes with my custom rom and kernel. I can connect any usb mass storage without a problem.
I think that OP asks about the option of connecting the device to PC in mass storage mode, i.e. just like normal pendrive, instead of the MTP/PTP protocols.
As far as i have found, it is possible only for the external storage, with help of dedicated app - there is a thread somewhere on xda, don't remember details, but hope it should be easy to find.
P.S. on Note 1 with Samsung stock ICS it was just a matter of running a startup script, don't know if it would work for Note 8

My device is rooted, I'm not as concerned with USB mass storage. I just want MTP to work. I tried uninstalling all drivers and installing KIES.
I tried uninstalling all USB devices and restarting windows 7 to install them back. I tried downloading the using the Note 8 tool kit to install them and NO success installing the MTP drivers. I tried a different computer and it works!
Any suggestions to getting it work on my computer???

Seems i missed a well. I'm afraid I can't help much with MTP problem, the only two suggestions that come to mind are: try on another PC to make sure it's not a device, secondly - on my Note MTP started to behave only after I installed the latest Samsung USB drivers (probably found somewhere on xda).
