Q- New phone activation - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I plan on buying the Gs3 on my mother's account unactivated. I would like to know if can activate it my account, I'm not due an upgrade and not face any penalities.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

Yes but they will show it as a new phone and charge you $36 activation fee.

Not if it is Att you are talking about...if you buy the phone outright it will be a simple change equipment and you will only be charged the price of the phone ..it should go that way for most phone companies but if its att you won't get charged...

Nah, it's for Sprint. My mother have an upgrade and I do not so I plan on buying the Gs3 from wirefly or some other place unactivated and activate it on my account w/o going through the "flip-flop" fiasco.

I thought that, but when I got my Epic the reps told me if I ever activate a phone too early that wasn't due for an upgrade my account could be cancelled or something.

Nah. Some of the richer Devs do it all the time. Same as buying a phone full retail off contract.

Why not just have someone you know on tmobile to get the unlock code for you, or just go on a website and pay $10-25

Unless I'm mistaken, the OP is asking where to buy the phone and how much will it cost. An unlock code, whether paid for or through a friend, does nothing without a phone.
To the OP, it really depends on the market in your area. You can search on Craigslist, or EBay. 200-250(used) and 400-500(new) are probably the price ranges you will see.
If you buy from Craigslist, have the seller meet you at a local Tmo store, so you can easily verify if the phone is blacklisted (in case you might ever want to use it on Tmo, prepaid or otherwise).

Alternate Upgrade

I have a line with an upgrade that will be going to Verizon. Anyway I can use it on my line without having the other line's contract extended by 2 years? Waste of an upgrade if not used lol
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I don't think so. You have to extend the contract on the line you buy the phone on. I usually do this when other lines are due for upgrades and my line isn't.

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Because the phones cost Sprint more than they charge you and they recover the difference over the term of a contract.

That can be said about nearly every carrier that subsidizes the price of a phone.

If they blocked the IMEI then no AT&T nor T-Mobile user can use it.
And the risk you are going to end up paying for that if you don't return it it probably pretty high. And they aren't going to charge you what you can sell it for on the secondary market.

Ask yourself, is making a few hundred bucks worth being charged with mail fraud? Contact AT&T and return the device, it's the right thing to do.
Might of worked before but nowadays they track and black ball phones by imei. So not worth it when u get busted.
Sent from the TermiNOTEr 2!
Yeah if I were the OP I would definitely take it into the AT&T store and return it. Sooner or later the paper trail will lead back to the device. Even if the IMEI works and you sell it on Craigslist or something and then AT&T catches there mistake and turns it off. Whoever you sold it to might come looking for you. Or even worse have the cops show up at your door for mail fraud.
That's a felony, theft by mislaid/delivered property and also possibly mail fraud. I would return it since it's NOT YOURS. Just suggesting
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Just hold on to it for a couple of months, if you called att no one would know how to process a return in this situation. If you return it to the store an employee is going to just steal it or something. After a couple of months sell it. Fraud is when you intentually screw over the company, technically you found a lost phone. Lol
Btw this is called equipment gaming through att and per contract you will get your account canceled if they see this done multiple times, they will not take legal action. It's not worth there time nor does anyone care at att.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
Great except the phone was delivered insured. USPS pays out. I'm sure they audit losses.

Att does not insure anything they send out, all att would do in this situation is send out a new phone for free because if it was insured the shipping company would make sure it was not lost and make him wait a week before he gets a new phone. Like I said just keep it for 2 months if something were to happen then they will be looking for it in that time.
If you wanted to make sure the phone is not on the blacklist, call att tech support desk and ask them to run the imei number because your thinking about buying a note 2 for a friend. The worst att will do is report the phone stolen but less likely because the phone is technically lost and they only report phones that are stolen.

Correct. Couriers are protected by mail fraud laws. Anyways, I've lost interest in this topic.

No they don't. I spoke with a Amazon rep to see if it were possible a while back and was told no.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Amazon rep told me it was possible as long as sprint didn't start the account making u no longer a new customer. The real question is can sprint do that through the credit dept or if I need to start driving all over MI until I find a BB that will price match

What is a bad ESN?

Sorry for the noob question. There's a sIII for sale on craigslist for 130 with a bad ESN. What is that? is that bad?

That means the past owner didn't pay a bill or owes a balance so you can't activate it on Sprint until it is payed off

Because when they purchased the phone they got it at a huge discount that Sprint subsidized counting on this person being a customer for 2 years. Now they terminated early and did not pay the ETF so the only recourse besides filing with a collection agency is to deny them the revenue (they think) of selling the phone.

My wife actually had a phone with a bad MSN. So I took it over and developed it. Always nice to work on device with no worries. I tested it as much as I could. It still works with wifi so, able to still almost everything but actually make a call. There are apps out there to actually make a call via wifi but then that actually would defeat the purpose of a "phone". Unless, your connected to wifi all day everyday.
