Hi all,
Sorry to start a thread for this, but I couldn't find a single thread anywhere on the net covering this issue for this phone.
When using headphones, my One X is slightly louder in the left ear than the right. I have fairly sensitive hearing, so perhaps not everyone would notice/care, but it's really bugging me.
I've tried turning the headphones around, and sure enough the problem reverses, so I know it's not my ears. I've also tried 2 different pairs of headphones, and they both did the same thing. And I've tried the same headphones on a different device, and they're fine. So it has to be the phone.
I tested using music on the stock player, and podcasts on BeyondPod Pro.
Has anybody had this problem or heard of it?
Thanks!
Simon
Hardware Problem
Sounds like a hardware problem to me... I think there is no way to set the balance manually. Try activating/deactivating BeatsAudio. (I'd be surprised if that works.) Maybe there are 3rd party apps...
If this doesn't work, i'd do this:
You have root
Try a different ROM...
Try to get a replacement device from your vendor. Maybe reset to stock rom, remove custom recovery and lock the bootloader... So that it appears to be "clean", at least at first sight.
You don't have root:
Try a reset.
Make use of the warranty, get a replacement.

Tried changing sound enhancer, all the same (including 'off'/none). Not rooted, tried resetting, including factory restore, no luck. Have emailed HTC, probably making a warranty claim. Just did one last week, only just got the phone back, so annoying (last claim was after the screen glass developed an odd imperfection - replaced the glass for free).
Not having much luck here Thanks for the reply though! Increasingly certain it's hardware-related. Very frustrating.

So I've ran into something of an odd problem recently. When I make a call (or receive one) I am extremely faint, to the point of the people not being able to understand what I say at all. I can hear people perfectly, however.
I've tried flashing a new ROM to see if that fixed anything. Two of them actually. No go. I haven't done extensive testing but if i use the speaker phone instead, I still sound like I'm "in a tunnel". I don't know if I sound just as bad or if it is just how a speaker phone normally sounds.
It also had not been in contact with water or dropped or anything. And it used to work fine. I honestly have no idea what's going on. I've tried out Android and Rhobuntu so maybe they did something? I have no idea.
Any suggestions? And yes, I've tried searching but it apparently isn't a big issue or I just can't get the keywords right.
EDIT: I used the voice recorder and, yes, I am faint as hell. It's ridiculous. Though, if I max up the volume and listen closely, I am pretty clear-sounding. If that helps any. I will continue to test.
EDIT 2: Turning off Auto Volume Control did not help any.
EDIT 3: Hard Reset didn't do anything.
EDIT 4: Is checking for when my contract expires for HD2.
if you've flashed to different roms, and also hard reset'd it, most likely its a hardware issue.
Flash to the shipped rom if you haven't done so, and if that doesn't help, call up t-mobile (or whoever your provider is) and get a warranty exchange.

UPDATE
I have flashed back to the STOCK ROM, plugged in my wired headphones and it doesn't present that problem anymore.
I guess it was the rooting method that caused that error to happen
--------------------
I've went through all of the threads that have headphones jack problems, but none of them seemed to match mine.
Every time I plug in my wired headphones and try to select a music player, the program will freeze for about 15 seconds, then it'll start responding again. About 2 seconds after it responds, the headset icon appears and I am able to listen to music. I haven't experienced any random fast forwarding, skipping, pausing, etc.
The ONLY problem AS OF NOW is that the phone freezes or when I select ANY music player when either its the default player, doubletwist, btunes, mixzing (when home) it DOES NOT respond until about 15 seconds, then shows the headset jack icon. Why doesn't it automatically show the headset icon once plugged in? & Why does the phone freeze? Can anyone help me with this problem?
I haven't tried connecting my phone to the auxilary in my car yet, but if there are any problems with that, I will post it.
PS: I've FULLY ROOTED my phone using this method -- http://bit.ly/b36V9j with NO CUSTOM ROMS INSTALLED. Root ONLY.
reflash to stock and try it
I feel like if I reflash to stock and that doesn't solve the problem, it would've been a waste of time. But, if you don't mind, can you point me in the direction of the stock rom please?
HTC Evo ROMs
it might be good, actually - if the problem still occurs then you can return/exchange the device. if the problem does not occur, then you know what the problem was.

This fix is somewhat different than your issue because it involves skipping, etc. However if you don't have success with different headphones and after a factory reset, I would say review this link: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/98880-fixed-microphone-jack-problem.html

There's no way im going to BEND anything on my phone.
I will flash back to the stock ROM, see if the problem persists, if so, then I know it may be a hardware issue. Might be forced to return if that is the case.

Just a thought - do you have a skin/case that could be interfering with the headphone plug seating all the way in?

No, the phone is naked. I'll be getting home shortly. I will flash back to stock and see if this corrects the problem.
ive had this problem as well, on the rom you get after using simple root. I just upgraded to froyo today (dual booting) and have not had the issue..
PS. froyo is a thousand times faster
If you still have the issue after flashing back to stock, try some headphones or a cable for your aux in that has gold ends. I've had nothing but problems with every cable I've used that didn't have gold ends.. but my new cable I bought for $7 that does have gold ends has worked perfectly.

I just read that the cameras do not work. I don't think I can flash to that ROM. I want a ROM that is blazing fast, has excellent battery life, has cameras working and apps with no problems.
Bumped for update.
Here is my problem
The problem is that after using my Nexus with headphones, there is no sound through the built-in speaker after unplugging the headphones. Using headphones again does work. Essentially the Droid is stuck in Headphone mode. So the nexus always thinks during a phone call im in headphone mode.
A user TRTG from DF.net made an app called audiotoggle. It dont work as good as I thought it would.
My question is how do you fix this? I asked in the rom section of the rom in using with no answers. Does anyone know what could be wrong? How to fix this?
Have you tried a reboot?

Yes I did a reboot. Also wiped cache and delvik to see if that would help. I have to use audiotoggle to get it to work but its not 100% working. It will allow me to make a call but the sensor dont work so I hit buttons while on the phone. Plus I have to enable the app before making a call or else I have to use speaker phone.
The same thing happened to me. The only thing I could think of was that the popping sound that I would hear every time I rebooted into recovery had blown out the speaker. I had to take it to Verizon and get a new one (again). Since it was my second return they could only send me a certified "like new" device. Now the volume rocker is loose and my battery smells.

Bump
Any luck on this? I have the same problem on my Nexus S. Sound seems to be restored only after wiping data, but that's not exactly what I want to do every time I use headphones.
Download android assistant. Go into the settings and go to the volume. If the system volume is all the way down that's your problem. Raise the slider to Max and thank me

99% likely it's a hardware problem. My second warranty replacement had this exact problem, and if I pulled up logcat, I could see it firing HEADSET_PLUGGED events constantly (going from plugged to unplugged). It's not worth fighting for a fix if you're eligible for a replacement, in my opinion -- not that I didn't try it myself.
If you are using Magisk and Lineageos, remove/disable "Audio FX" application which comes with Lineageos.
I used NoBloat Free, since Audio Fx is in system.
Had this issue pop up last week and cant seem to find a solution or even someone else with the same problem. The microphone would seem to be completely broken as no one can hear me and a basic recording doesnt play back anything. I take another recording with loud noises /pressure blowing on it on the mic hole, and playing the recording back, on maximum volume, I can hear my noises fairly clearly, its just QUIET. Ive torn the phone apart to clean out the hole and wiped off the bottom of the mic, but could there still be something stuck in the mic? it just looked like a black pad on the bottom. The rubber piece between the hole and the mic is clean. The headphone jack is also clean, and theres nothing showing anything erroneously plugged in
Could there be a software issue causing it to be quiet? I dont have any new apps and the issue persists in safe mode. Google now is set to only in the google app and even that doesnt hear anything
It's possible there could be something blocking the mic but with all that you did to clean it, I doubt it. It's more likely a hardware or software issue.
Try hard resetting your phone and before you install or update anything check the mic. If it still didn't work then it's a hardware issue. Then if your phone is still under warranty then send it in, if not claim insurance.

Thanks - my only thought on hard reset is that I tried safe mode which is theoretically the same(?) as a hard reset as far as interactions with the software. Or would the safe mode include stock software plus updates that may have caused the issue?
Safe mode would help if it was a third party app causing it but if it's an issue with stock software it may not. You could even try a stock kdz to make sure.

One more question - is it possible to roll back to a previous KDZ? like if im on the latest 29A now, can i roll back to 28? or should i just try a fix with LG update tool even?
If you want to stay on MM you can try a kdz. But you can't root MM. If you want to go back to LP so you can root and have a superior experience then you'll have to use LGUP to downgrade to 13b. And after that if your mic doesn't work then it's definitely a hardware issue.
Hi! I'm new here and to the XDA community in general, so apologies if this isn't the perfect place to post it here, or if this should've been posted in the ROM thread- I'll probably post in both, anyways :b
I installed the latest firmware of my phone, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8, and flashed both the latest Lineage Recovery and LOS Rom, as of March 28th 2021, so the latest version seems to be March 15.
Everything seems to be working fine, except for ONE thing- and that is the speaker. The speaker sounds HORRID right now. Putting it at a max volume makes the sound so crackly and distorted. Especially when listening to music- voices sound fine, but the instrumental is so blown up. The best analogy would be if all music sounded like earrape. That's what music on my phone sounds like right now.
I've been researching and researching, and this issue with audio seems to be a common problem with LineageOS users. However, as of 2021, it seems like no one has found a fix? I've tried disabling audiofx, messing with the system, EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING that I could find online. And it still sounds terrible!
The only solution according to people was to fully reset your phone through the recovery, which I kind of doubt will fix things in my situation, plus it would be a pain to move all the files from this phone to the new reformat. I wanted to explore my options and if there was any- ANY fix. It's seriouslyy bugging me.
I hope that the problem is easily solved and I can have normal sounding music back again! (I've had normal music on an older build of LOS, It was just this time that really triggered this awful bug)
bump? (is bumping allowed)
It seems the RN8 forums are seeing very little traffic lately.
The only thing that occurs to me is changing the audio processor; do you have Magisk?

Aw. That sucks.
Unfortunately no, I don't have this phone rooted as I don't really need rooting for a particular reason. Some people have pointed this audio issue on AudioFX, some people have said it only got fixed by reflashing their rom, which kinda sucks as I'd basically have to do the whole setup all over again
Will changing the audio processor fix the speakers? How do I do that?

I know how frustrating it is to try to solve a problem by getting into another so I totally understand your being wary -- I suggest you educate yourself thoroughly on the caveats implied.
I can't guarantee anything (plus my 2nd RN8 is still awaiting unlocking) but I am a fan of Viper4Android -- available as standalone but much easier to setup as a Magisk module, hence my question.
Usually, the built-in processor is disabled during V4A setup and while this can be tricky at times, I have nothing but praise for V4A (I get it in all devices I have ever owned).

Okay so, after some research and testing, I am 99% sure that the problem is with AudioFX. I found out how to mess with the confusing UI and was able to drag the stuff up and down, and it CONSIDERABLY made an impact. The bug was still there though, no matter what settings I dragged up and down I'd still have terrible audio. BUT switching between the presets made an impact on the audio. Hundo P. I lowered the bass so much that for like 5 minutes I had okay (bassless) audio, then it came back. So it is a software issue.
Would factory resetting and reflashing the rom fix it? I dunno. I really don't have a need or want for rooting my phone to fix this bug as I am content with default audio apps. I might consider it though, especially because I used a "volume booster" app I found on the play store a few times.
But yes, I am just asking if formatting everything on the phone and reflashing the rom would fix it.

i said "delete" because i was not sure you can disable it
but since you disable it and that fix nothing i suggest doing a full backup (boot/dtbo/system/vendor/data/persist)
(i don't think your current recovery will do it, use OrangeFox)
try another rom (RRos) and check the sound
if the problem still there that means it's a hardware problem

Welp! After hours and hours of what is essentially torture, it's sadly not a software problem This goddamn terrible issue exists on all the multiple roms I've tried flashing and reflashing. Pixel Experience, RR, I EVEN FLASHED THE ORIGINAL MIUI ON IT AND ITS STILL BROKEN. I am so tired!
So now there's only two possible culprits:
1. Hardware problem - I really really don't want it to be this one, with the state of the pandemic I can't easily go to a repair shop right now, and dealing with this broken speaker sucks! It's even worse once I realized that it could just be a dust issue.
When I blow using my mouth into the speaker, I get normal sound for 2 seconds until the crappy earkiller terrible music is back. So it's definitely fixable!! Some way. The only solution I have seen so far is that you take the phone apart and wipe the "grill" of the speaker with a Q-Tip. Another idea in my head is to use compressed air and blow it into the grills so that I don't have to take it apart. However, I am doubting the long term use of this solution, I'm not sure if it'll work.
I even goddamned flashed MI UI back on my phone even though I extremely hate it JUST to use the clean speaker feature, which didn't work. The only thing that works for a SECOND is blowing with my mouth into the speaker.
2. Firmware problem - To be fair, the terrible music only started happening shortly after I flashed the latest firmware (v.12.0.4) + latest build of LineageOS 17.1 (March 15) + latest LOS Recovery, same date.
I have used this phone for several months now, (since May 2020?) and for 95% of the time have worn a case. I have a tempered glass screen protector, and I'm not sure how I could've possibly dropped my phone that could have broken the speaker. However, it has been in some quite dusty places, so that's the ONLY thing that could make it a hardware problem- but why now? Why now only when I flash a new firmware? Why not a week before I flashed it? Or a day or two? So that's also sus as heck.
So here are the solutions, from best to absolute worst for me:
1. It is simply a firmware problem. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, because I really don't want any potential of bricking this phone, but I'd simply "flash" an older version that doesn't have this bug (specifically, v12.0.3, but if that one has this bug too I am going to) Please let me know if I could do this though, I don't wanna brick this phone. Alternatively I could root it and edit the file that it "changed" that caused this, however because I don't know which file causes the bass to sound this terrible, that could be another challenge in it of itself.
2. It is simply a small dust problem. I can buy a can of compressed air with a straw online, and clean out those speakers, and it will be fixed permanently.
3. It is a hardware problem that can only be fixed by taking apart the phone and cleaning the dust with a Q Tip. This is the one I hate the most as it requires me to go to a store which is impossible during the pandemic. I use my speaker for a LOT of things, so I can't handle not having one right now.
Alternatively, an option that I could use is switching to Viper and tweaking it so that the BASS (which seems to be the main culprit right now for the broken audio, as voices in songs mostly sound fine?) is low as heck. That might ruin the sound of the speaker, but it's a crappy workaround that could just work for now.
This thread about the Redmi Note 7 Pro could give some final hope for me. It described "bad audio distortion", however it is about when you're RECORDING VIDEO, not SPEAKERS. However, it is the closest I have to what I have right now. All the other threads I found on google seemed to only happen in certain apps, which is NOT the audio that I have.
Still, if this theory could prove that all I need to do to fix this overblown bass / distorted audio is to edit a config file in the vendor firmware, it'd be golden!
I really just need help fixing this phone's speakers omg ;-;
Bump, anyone know if flashing older firmware is okay and won't brick my phone? Would compressed air damage my phone? I really don't know what to do at this point.
If you're willing to risk it, my bet would be on (very careful) disassembly and cleaning the speaker with a photography compressed air can/pump. Might be worth having professionals do it, though.
