I just got a Kindle Fire, I've got it on the stock ROM with root. So far it's been great, but the lack of storage space is what's concerning me. I'd love to use it on a plane etc to watch moves, but there's not enough space on the thing to store any kind of selection.
Without using a laptop and without access to the internet or a network in general, I'd like to be able to transfer files from external storage of some kind. I figured the best choice would be to transfer files wirelessly from an android phone. I'm able to set up a wifi hotspot from my phone using the built-in function of the OS, and use File Expert's "WiFi File Receiver" function to transfer files from the Kindle to the phone, but not the other way around. Apparently that's by design, so I either need a app for hosting a hotspot on the kindle, or I need a different method entirely.
Any thoughts?

Yeah I've tried it but it's useless if I don't have internet access, such as while on a plane, which is where the majority of my video viewing on the kindle will be, or if I'm trying to keep my data use on my phone down elsewhere. Being handcuffed to the internet on this thing kind of sucks.
If you decide to go with a custom rom built on the laters version of hashcodes kernel (3.0) you can use a USBOTG connection (USB On the GO) and a USB flash drive etc.
The major problem with this is that you'd require a power source to power the USB as the kindle wont' be able to power anything higher than 8GB
Unless you change from the stock ROM to a later kernel to enable OTG you're stuck; the fire was designed as an internet device after all. I wish there was a way to link the fire with an Android phone for storage via cable but there apparently isn't. I carry my videos etc n a 32 GB thumb drive and use the following arrangement:

However, I was able to get it to work! I used the stock wifi hotspot feature of my phone running ICS, and ran Wifi File Explorer on the phone. Wifi file explorer is basically a server that allows file transfers through a web browser on the local network. I then go to the phone's ip address on the Kindle's browser and download my files.
Not the simplest solution, but it will work in a pinch. It would be nice if there was a client app for Wifi File Explorer to run on the Kindle to make it a little cleaner, less browser window scrolling and zooming.
If you are going to be transferring large files (like movies) then I suggest you go with the Setup that Lotek posted. That is going to transfer files way faster than over wifi.
But that requires a new ROM though doesn't it? I just tested it with a 400 MB mp4 file and it took 4 minutes. It would be great if I could use USB and transfer faster, but 4 minutes is at least faster than I expected with that app.

Would that situation actually work on a plane (using your initial example) where you're generally not supposed to turn the WiFi on (obviously you could do it before the flight, but not during)?
I don't understand airplane rules. Many plane trips I take lately actually offer internet service over wifi for $5, so I don't see how having wifi on for a few minutes could cause any problems. On the other hand, I just realized... Is there even a way to have wifi on without having the cellular radio on? I wonder what happens when I try to host a hotspot in airplane mode.

I think you can put airplane mode on and then turn WiFi on, which will leave everything else (GPS, cell data, etc) off.
Rules for planes may be changing too. I haven't flown in a while, so I could easily just be out of touch. I know they used to want you to turn off wireless and phone data, but that could be different now.
They do tell you to turn off ALL electronic devices, including devices that have no radio, until after you are in the air and leveled off, but after that they say you may now use "approved" electronic devices, and they sometimes mention making sure they are in airplane mode. I doubt if any of it makes any difference once you're up in the air, they just want to be in control of it.

My phone's not rooted and I don't know how to root it yet (Samsung galaxy S II I777 with leaked ICS ROM), so I guess I can't use that one, I use FoxFi for normal hotspot use for my Kindle, but if there's no signal it won't even turn the hotspot on. I guess I'll go through the gamut of hotspot apps and see if something will work.

That's because wifi hotspot uses your cellular connection to provide wifi for other devices. Of course it's going to turn on your cell radio.

Well it doesn't need a cellular connection to provide a hotspot, I have my Kindle connected to my phone via wifi right now but I have no cell signal whatsoever. Obviously most people use this function to share a internet connection, but a cell connection is not required, kind of like having a local network in your home run by a router without an internet connection.

To allow the kindle to pull files from the phone. Remember, the situation we're talking about here is being on a plane, where you're unlikely to have internet.

Yeah sorry, maybe I didn't title the thread clearly enough, but the goal here is to connect the two devices and transfer files without having access to any additional network infrastructure such as a wifi hotspot or 3g/4g service.
You'd think that someone would have created a program that would allow direct transfer of files over a private wifi connection, but it seems that all file transfer apps, like Hoccer or Bump actually send files over the internet through a server and back to the receiving device.

So I've been using the Tom coding package that installs the mobile Wi-Fi router with no problems until last night... now it keeps trying to connect to ISP.Cingular and then stops... it basically doesn't work now. I've tried to uninstall and reinstalled it dozens of times with no luck.
And yet... the 3G connection works because I can browse through Opera. So...?
OhI might add that I can turn on the Wi-Fi and connect to my in-house router just fine and do what on the internet through the phone. SO... it is definitely something specific with wireless internet sharing.

You need to make sure that it is connecting to the correct address. At the bottom of the App, it should have a few different choices of connections to use. Try another one and see if it works. You may have to set up a new connections for this to work properly. Keep in mind that tethering/mobile hotspot is not covered by AT&T's wireless data plan. It is a separate monthly charge. You should be careful when using it too much at a time, so they don't block or throttle your connection.
The device I am trying to connect with to my Tilt 2 is a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and apparently it doesn't like ad-hoc, whatever that is exactly. I was told on the Galaxy Tab section of this forum that this is the case, and that I need some kind of "mobile ap", although again I do not understand what that exactly means. ???
Ah, see that's much better information. So, no, you probably won't be able to connect without another app doing so. Ad-hoc is, simply put, a connection to another device other than a router which is allowing you access to its Internet connection. If the device you're trying to connect with doesn't allow ad-hoc connections, then the Wifi Router app won't do you any good, as that is the type of connection it uses. Most mobile devices do not natively support this, however. The problem, therefore, is with the Galaxy Tab you have, not with the TP2. Find an app or mod that allows for ad-hoc connections and you'll be all set.

No. Ad-hoc is a connection between two devices. Unless you use a router, that's how it's going to be no matter if you are using WM, a laptop, iOS, Android, et cetera. The connection type is determined by the device sending the signal. If it comes from a device, then it is ad-hoc. It is not a problem with the software. That is how wifi was designed to work in the first place. The problem, again, is with the Tab, not the WM application.
Well apparently there is a solution for the Tab that allows it to see ad-hoc networks, so I will try that and let you guys know how it went.
Can no longer connect to Ad-Hoc with Tilt 2
I have been using both the CM Internet Sharing program and the WMWifiRouter with no issues for over a year now on my AT&T Tilt 2.
One day a couple weeks ago I had been using CM to connect my laptop to the internet. everything was just fine as usual.
At some point, I had disconnected and tried to reconnect, and since then I can no longer use either of these programs.
What happens is this...I turn them on and the phone will no longer hold a connection to the ad-hoc network that is created. Up in the status bar I see the icon showing WiFi trying to connect but it will not stick anymore.
I can connect to my office and/or home wifi router still. It just will not connect to the ad-hoc network any longer.
This makes no sense to me at all, since it has always worked and was even working earlier in the day when it stopped working.
I use the tethering frequently and really need to get this solved. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I want to be able to switch on my WiFi hotspot, connect a laptop to it, and move data to and from the phone's storage as if the phone was acting as a server. Is this at all possible? Essentially I want to use the phone as a portable server for computers that I service in the home for clients. I want to be able to access my tools and software and files by connecting the client's laptop to my phone's wifi hotspot and then browsing to the server on that network to access the files. Anything to make this possible? Thanks in advance!
You're better off using a flash drive and just plugging into the computers...
It'd be slow and cumbersome even if you could get it to work.

I have Private Internet Access as my VPN and I wanna use it on my phone to allow me to have a Wifi portable hotspot going through the VPN.... Only thing is, at the moment I am reliant on using my computers VPN applications which isnt ideal if the signal and connection to the VPN drops as I get taken offline and I have to turn cellular data on and off again to get it back up and running....
Any solutions? I have tried that tethering app from 2009 and that didnt work at all. Any ideas? Thanks!

Unfortunately the stock Android tethering application does not work with VPNs. This limitation is an oversight in the software and not a system limitation.
However there is an application called ClockworkMod Tether that will allow you to tether and use a VPN at the same time. In fact it makes use of the standard tethering application and then fixes up the routing information to make it work.
This application does not require you to root your phone but you do need to run software on the computer that you wish to connect to your phone. Also this only works for USB tethering at the moment.
There are other alternatives to ClockworkMod Tether, if you wish to try them, including PDANet.

So I'm almost lost on where to begin. I feel like I have tried everything but here we go.

So for a long time I used wifi tether router to create a hotspot for other devices like ps3s and computers to connect to. This would use my unlimited mobile data and wouldn't touch my regular hotspot count. It worked amazingly! But at some point it started to use my regular hotspot and I was directed to the dreaded tmobile upsell page. Well this pretty much ruined my life because I live in a place that provides Internet and won't let you get your own and it's super slow. Like less then 1mb per sec slow. .. So i have been desperately trying to find a work around. I had countless emails with the developer with the end result being him saying here are some vpns people say they have had success with I can help you no further. So i tried those but it did not seem to work at all. I tried using several vpn applications with wifi tether router. Vpn applications with it all built into the app and you just have to hit connect to open vpn. but that didn't seem to work either. So i went back to the past and tried using other methods from before rooting my phone. In the past I would use pdanet+ to usb tether a windows 7 laptop and use the Internet connection sharing function to share the Internet connection from pdanet to a router plugged in via ethernet cable. It worked back then and worked this time, for the most part. You have to use hide tether usage level 1 to bypass the upsell page. In the past this wasn't a problem. I could do anything just as if connected to my hotspot. But now I can't get netflix to work on anything but a mobile device. Not my ps3, computers, smart tv, nothing. User agent switchers don't solve the problem. So this gave me another idea. Try to use the computer as a vpn gateway. So i downloaded open vpn client and tried some free vpns. I wasn't using pdanet at this point. I was trying to connect the computer to wifi tether router and basically encrypt all Internet traffic from my isp (tmobile) using a vpn. So if I start the vpn and am connected to the phone via wifi and share the wifi connection to the router I still hit the upsell page or it will keep on trying to load Web pages in the browser but will never load them. So when I use open vpn client on widows 7 it creates it's own network adapter. So i tried to share that to the router and connect another computer. It barely worked, speed was awful according to speedtest.net . While running vpn I can watch netflix after downloading Microsoft silver light on computer running vpn but not very well. So i thought maybe I could use my computer as a vpn server but was unsuccessful. I tried fiddler in the past but all it did was mess with my computer. My needs are complicated as well. I wasn't to keep Knox unvoided for one. I as well would like to be somewhat mobile with my phone. I don't want to have to keep it plugged into the computer all the time to have Internet access. Which means even if i get pdanet working with Netflix that's just temporary. Has anyone found a solution to the OPs concern for how to get tethering working again through T-Mobile? It use to be that you could use an app like: Tether (from Clockwork Mod) or EasyTether (from Play Store) to get around T-Mobile's restriction on tethering; however, those don't seem to work anymore (ever with user agent spoofing) - has anyone found a current solution for tethering on T-Mobile?

Whatever VPN witchcraft PdaNet+ uses to hide tether usage makes Netflix unusable on a PC. The way around this is to unhide the tether usage, load whatever it is on Netflix you want to watch (once the red circle starts spinning is good enough), then re-hide the tether usage. I don't know if doing the same will let Netflix work properly on your other devices, as I've never tried. I don't have Netflix anymore, so I can't try with my TV's Netflix app.
It's a nuisance, but it's something one just has to put up with if you're using your phone plan as your home internet. I don't understand the reason this happens. Websites still detect your Windows version and browser just fine, yet Netflix thinks you're incompatible for some reason.
FWIW, Amazon Prime doesn't have this problem.
I also don't know why WiFi Tether Router stopped working for you. It works fine for me.

Look under Wi-Fi preferences for "Wi-Fi Direct". Is it not there? I don't have my P2 handy or I would check myself...but it is there on the the P3. I've never used it before but I see other peers in my house available to connect.
I don't have WiFi at home (digital divide problem) so I need to use my P2XL as router and device both at same time. Eg. to use my device with Chromecast

You asked about "Wi-Fi sharing" which is a different technology from using your phone as a hotspot where it uses your phone's cellular data to create a Wi-Fi hotspot your other devices can use. Is this what you are trying to accomplish? If so "tethering" is definitely an option IF your carrier and/or plan allow it. On many carriers it is plan-by-plan. If your plan is pre-pay it may not be available. There are ways to bypass the carrier tether checks but it requires root. Not sure if you can stream to Chromecast via tethering because I don't own one. Maybe someone else who does can confirm.

WiFi-Hotspot allows all your other devices to connect to the Internet by sharing your phone's mobile data; while WiFi-Sharing achieves that by sharing your phone's WiFi connection. Since you do not have Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi sharing is not an option for you, regardless of which Pixel you have. There are many tethering guides on how to modify your build.prop to bypass your carrier's tether checks. Which carrier are you on, and is it a pre-paid or post-paid plan? As your phone is rooted, you may also want to search XDA for enabling tethering depending on your specific carrier/plan. Best of luck! :good:

I do this exact same thing you are describing via tethering. I make my Pixel 2XL a hotspot, then connect chromecast to it. Then I can stream things from the same Pixel 2XL to the chromecast. The key is getting tethering to work.

If you cannot enable and setup a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone you DO have Vodafone tethering checks. It is Vodafone blocking you from using the tether function! The tethering function on your phone will use the phone's Wi-Fi radio to create a Wi-Fi hotspot and then you will have Wi-Fi to share with your other devices. You can do simple edit of your build.prop to bypass the restriction. If you are rooted, you likely have Magisk installed and there should still be a working tethering module that will do the job for you.

Ok suppose I've created WiFi hotspot and I'm sharing my WiFi with Chromecast, so how can also connect my phone to Chromecast if my phone is busy simulating WiFi router with Chromecast?

At this point my phone is busy being router for Chromecast!! I should use another WiFi in same my phone to connect it to Chromecast! Make sense?

I think one thing you are misunderstanding is that if you use your phone as a "hotspot" -- essentially you are making your phone a modem & router -- then wifi is actually forcefully turned off; therefore using any data connection other than the device's own (connection) is impossible [like another router/modem or data line]. Anyone who has successfully ran the device as a hotspot can attest to this...
I mean, it kinda makes sense... If the device has to receive a wifi signal, process the data throughout the internet, and send the corresponding data through the same wifi signal, then it'd be too busy & impossible for it to also be connecting the same wifi signal to send and receive to another source. As technology is now, it'd be crazy for a smartphone to have and employ more than 1 wifi radio or multiple wifi radios...There's really simply no need for it (right now at least...).
