Ads on XDA?!?! - HTC Wildfire S

Besides the usual numerous (and annoying) ads on XDA, the admins are now going with an ad format that completely butchers the layout of Post #1 of all threads.
Bravo.
If you must run ads, any chance of going back to the old-style format where the layout of Post #1 remains untouched?
Highly annoying.
Thanks,

Answer
use adfree on google chrome

I use Tapatalk. No ads here.

Adblock plus on Chrome or Firefox. I never realize how many ads it blocks until I install one of the browsers on a new computer. Then I'm like, wait... That was never there before And as a plus, Adblock blocks the ads in youtube too (Both the initial one and the on-screen ones). In fact, I didn't even know the initial ads existed until I saw them on a friend's computer. That's how useful it can get.
Sorry for rambling so much

Thanks, to all.
I'll try some combination of the aforementioned solutions.

No problem man . Just keeping making awesome ROMs

Dowload android overclock on the market it has an ad free thing in there.

Or just bust into your hosts file and point all ad servers to localhost

And tbh I use ad block on my computer but I don't get ads anyway since I'm an rc.

Full Screen Pop-Over Ads...

Are full screen pop over ads going forward the new norm on xda? If so i guess we just have to live w/ it, but ads like this are incredibly annoying...
Happened to me the first time I logged in today but thats it.
I've gotten it on my phone and on my computer the last few days...
Are you talking about accessing xda on a laptop or on a phone's browser/app? Its happened to me viewing the web version from my phone. Really annoying.

I have seen this on so many tech sites lately. I am just doing the nasty thing and using ad-block for chrome. I wouldn't use it if the ads weren't as intrusive but these are just silly.
You are using chrome.. is there no AdBlock-Addon??
Never seen that
// this message is nonsense 5/8. I need to get "search in thread".

All the forum sites are using pop up ads, flash, etc. these days, and it freezes the browser momentarily at times.
That's why I use Tapatalk-based Android apps like this one.
Too bad I can't see all the fancy signature blocks, etc. but I can see & reply to messages quickly.

It just annoys me when I am reading xda on my computer, I understand why they do it, I still don't like it.

We are not choosing to put pop-over ads on XDA. If you see them, please screenshot them and send it to "svetius".
Full screen ads on my Gingerbread Nook Color are a total fail! I usually don't mind ads, but this is going too far.

Please read my post above. We hate these too, but we need a screenshot to know what you are seeing. Else how can we get rid of it?

How's this screenshot from my DroidX Dolphin HD browser (flash suppressed)?

Yeah, this totally sucks, and could be a reason for me to not visit XDA. When I'm viewing this on a phone, it's ridiculously tedious to close the damn thing down on a small screen.

Slow or hanging of XDA forums / IE7

It took me a while but I found that it was ads from static.liftdna.com that were causing IE7 to freeze on multiple computers. I added that site to the "restricted" zone on Internet Explorer and the site is usable once again.
Hopefully some of you experiencing the same issue get this far into the site to find this post!
Or use Opera/Chrome/Firefox

i'm using chrome and lately the forums have been achingly slow... keep getting popups saying "XDA has stopped responding, wait or kill tab"...
M
Works fine with my Firefox. No problem with ads

Adfree Android not blocking ads within Dolphin HD

I'm not sure if it's a problem with my phone or the apps themselves. Does anyone know what I can do to remedy this problem?
Also sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.

my experience with adfree is, that this app filters not all ad´s. but a lot of. I think it is important what information is inside the host files which you must download. Maybe it is a good idea that you renew this file every day. Try it.

If you want Ad-free app to block apps, then you must be download n installing the host files regularly...
Everyday, new adds are posted and Ad-free doesn't recognize that automatically...
So, open the app, select BOOT NORMALLY and select "DOWNLOAD & INSTALL HOSTS"
That shud keep those pestering ads away...
I found when using it that it also blocked web sites from loading like mediafire... Think because it its ad heavy.so you may find it causes other issues.

Actually I do update it everyday. It filters everything else except for Dolphin HD.

You might also want to consider AdAway from one of the Dev here on XDA. Available off the market Great host file collection. I usually update once a week.

I love this app, totally recommend it!

I've been using it for quite a while as well. Best one I've seen to far and even speedup some of my apps as they don't have to load ads from other sources. LOVE IT.
I've switched to Adaway. This is much better! I have one complaint, but it's a minute one. The ads are gone but the banners where they were are still there. Instead of an ad it just shows a message saying something about "not able to load." does anyone know how to get rid of that? It's not a huge issue but it'd be nice if it was gone.

That depends entirely on the app.
If there's a placeholder for banners, nothing can remove it, but the developer himself.

In Dolphin HD?? Damn I was hoping it'd be similar to Adblock Plus for GC and FF for the computer.

maybe u can try lucky patcher
or LBE privacy guard available in market

Banner Ads. Really!?

I'm rooted. I run AdFree. Everything is up to date.
My gf installed an app then delete it. Not sure which app. Now every time I restart the phone I get the "Android is updating...." message before it boots. But the part that really gets me......
I'm now getting ad banners even in paid apps. I see ads even in paid versions of ROM Manager. (Yes the ads are turned off in the settings.)
This is really frustrating me. Does anyone have any suggestions other than a factory reset?? The ads all say they are AdMob ads by Google.

Addons detector then look for push ads. Top button after scan. Had a similar issue. Hope that helps

Try adaway it downs multiple host lists and merges them together. Works well for me basically all in game and browser ads are block.

Thanks guys. Neither one of those detected anything. Yet - the problems persists.

Can you reflash the ROM, and restore?

Not at the moment. Won't be home for a few more days.
It's very frustrating. They aren't normal ads.

Do ADD BLOCKERS work

I was wondering if anyone has used any add blockers that work. I have used 2 and they don't seem to work.
I still see adds in apps and specially when I browse thepiratebay.org those are really annoying.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Ad-Free Android is the most popular, yes it works for a majority of ads. It does require root and requires you to reboot your device after applying.

Well for the apps that I use it doesn't work but didn't really checked into it but i install it if it's offers with the roms i flashed and use adaway for the one's that is not blocked with the add blocker.

ADD the pros and cons of the different AD blocker apps. I use AD-free and it works for most apps i have. You're welcome for the spelling lesson too.

I love this thing!
Some ads are server dependant. Meaning the ads are broadcasted from their server. Only way to block them is by editing the apk and removing the code that calls for the add.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Ad-away is a great one works like a charm on mine.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm more interested in removing the ads from websites than from APP's. My friend is using a Gingerbread ROM for his Sprint S2 and it has an ads blocker built into it and it works really good. It's the only reason why he's still on GB.
I've tried adfree Android before and it really wasnt working for me at all but i will give Ad Away a try
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Try and find the source of the ads and add that domain to your hosts file.
Go to mvpshosts.org, I think that's the address, and download and use one of their hosts files.
That's basically all the ad blockers do anyway as far as I understand it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Another way I remove ads from apps that don't need internet to function is by using droid wall and blocking them access. You can also use lucky patcher or another app to edit the apps permissions and deny it internet access. I do this for games
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I use "ad free android" and it works on everything except the programs that have the ads delivered from their own servers as mentioned above. you can also do this to your PC, and i HIGHLY recommend it. No more ads on any website.
edit: also if you're on a not-so-unlimited data plan it will save your high speed date, since you're not downloading ads every 5 seconds.
The simple answer is yes. Most of the time at least, I still get the occasional Ad every now and then, but it's fine with me.
